Excellent video, and I love camouflage...especially making my own. The trick is always...ALWAYS...no movement. Even a squirrel with basic greys and browns with no dithering pattern can hide from the eye as long as it's still.
It's fascinating how effective classic m81 is. I like the multicam, but can't beat good old woodland. I watched the Part 2 before this one, and honestly I think woodland is the most effective in autumn but also greatly effective in spring and summer. But I'm from Michigan so that will obviously depend on your environment.
The camo wasn't working because of the lighting. He is super dark on the camera, but irl the colors would pop more and it would be harder to distinguish due to the camera making him darker.
Exactly as you describe. The dynamic range of the camera ruins this camo in certain situations. I was just out at airsoft this weekend. My dad and I use his old Navy BDUs. We were blending in like crazy... I never got hit, he got hit once but it was a fluke, and we took out a few people each game. Most guys wear multicam which is really ineffective in heavy woodland, we could see them coming probably at 3x the distance they could see us, if that makes sense.
That's facts. This is why I say watching a camo video on UA-cam should not decide your go-to camo pattern. The human eye is very different from a camera lens.
This pattern was in use during my time in the Marine Corps (1995 to 1999). It was effective in all the environments in which I trained. I loved the pattern but I know a lot of folk agree with me when I say the design of the utility uniforms of that era were garbage. I'm so glad to see that our warriors of today are being issued high quality field apparel. The utilities our Marines, Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors and Coast Guardsmen are wearing now are just worlds better than the stuff of yesteryear.
Concealment is everything, as well as cover. Good job...I still use a mix of OD green and woodland ....it works in Arizona also. I try to use the shadows as much as possible here.
0:32 Great, didn't see you until you moved. 1:01 Spotted you within the first second, you were too dark compared to the plant in front of you. 1:47 Also spotted you right away. 2:20 Didn't see you 3:03 Spotted you about three seconds before you started moving 3:34 Nice. 3:52 Spotted you right away 4:49 That was probably the sloppiest so far 5:34 Thought you were that shadow on the lower left quarter of the screen. 6:48 Saw you half a second before you moved. 7:06 Nice
if he stays out of the sunlight you can't see him but if he's in a unlighted area it's not so easy to see him but he needs to stay still longer. he makes a move too soon
These videos are not only interesting but it's actually kind of fun, I like trying to pick you out before you move. This time I only spotted you twice before you moved.
have you ever mixed three color desert pants with woodland top, just like in Lone Survivor movie? I feel like this pattern would work well in the environment you are shooting in. Love the videos!
It worked best against the brown of the trees or mud, but was still very effective, it's just that against the light green vegetation, with no wood, it contrasted more. As the sunlight dims, hiding in the shadows will be much easier. I didn't realize how much louder Heel 2 Toe is over Toe 2 Heel walking. Semper Fi Good video.
You must take also in consideration that in spring, fall and winter, there is less green and more brown (dark and light) from leaves on ground and black branches are more visible so i think woodland in even better in that time of the year.
I've got a bunch of woodland camouflage BDUs (hot weather & cold weather) from people I know who were in the Army, as well as other surplus gear from one of my uncles who will occasionally purchase some surplus gear and give some to my dad and my other uncle.
AJ Calacci that's awesome I got the Woodland BDU & Field Jacket & I love it a lot. Like for a Jungle & Woodland Environment M81 Woodland would be my personal favorite.
its a pretty dark pattern. looks like it is best near tree trunks, but when near green vegetation, I can pick you out on those occasions, unless hidden behind a burm or at tree trunks or dark bushes with dark sticks trunks, or dark dirt areas. maybe the pattern should be lightened up some, or with a larger percentage of the tan swatches.
Brent, outstanding videos brother. Very realistic demonstrations both stationary and proper terrain negotiation. I found your channel by accident on a hunting channel and have literally watched probably 30 of your effectiveness videos. When you have a second, was wondering what you think about multicam and woodland for hunting in the north eastern US? I have and use both....woodland in the late spring and multicam in late fall/winter. I feel confident after watching your demonstrations on both. Thanks and stay safe man.
Hey bud, I think you have a good set up there. Multicam is in my experience more effective during the fall/winter then it is during the spring/summer. Having both those patterns on hand to wear in those respective seasons is the way to go.
Thanks for the response. I served in the 90's, been in LE ever since. Appreciate your continued service to our country and keep making these videos, they're literally the best camo vids on UA-cam.
one of my favorite camo's, works great in the woods from early spring and even up to late fall, with some more effort, burlap or camo netting etc., you can nearly turn invisible even for a very keen observing eye
That Woodland camo is really hard to spot on. I personally use it in my Airsoft games in forest areas and enemies have a hard time trying to spot me when concealed well in thick bushes. What I love about those BDUs is that they are cheap, effective and easy to find/buy. Nice video there!
I have to say that I honor the all time tradition of woodland camo and do remember it as a standard uniform, but lets face it when in the shadows its works great but forget it everywhere else. Woodland is from a time when Nam was just about over and there was a need for a new look but unfortunately its time has passed. Digital is the best at present and I'm sure it will be replaced one day as well. i salute woodland camo and for the many years it serviced us all. Andrew.
Great video man. Woodland is my Favorite for the Jungle & Woods, so effective. I honestly prefer this over some of the newer stuff like Multicam tropic & UCP
Inspired by your videos, I took several camouflage ball caps I have out into the nearby woods, placed them in several locations, the final one being side by side. The results: 5) Army UCP. The main factor for this pattern was that it was too light. If the colors had been a bit darker or richer it would have worked very well. 4) A-TACS AU. Considering that this is not a pattern designed for SC woods in spring, it did very well. While it didn't blend in with the woods that much, because of its pattern, it was hard to discern what it was. Looked more like a rock, which we have lots of. 3)A-TACS FG. The plants around here are a bit darker than FG, which made it stick out just a few feet sooner than the final two. If the plants had been a bit lighter in color (and there are some areas here where that is the case), it may have come out the winner. 2)MARPAT. I really don't know what factor put this in second place. I think maybe it may have been that the colors were just slightly off. As is, it would be very effective and would have one if it wasn't for #1. 1)M-81 Woodland. Because of the vegetation around here, the old analog Woodland blends in very well. The colors match the greens and browns of the area. Even up close, it was the most effective. At the end of it all though, my little experiment showed--at least to me--that camo is dependent on the area you happen to be in. With just minor color changes to either the patterns or foliage, any of the patterns would have worked well, and that includes A-TACS AU.
Scott Smith Cool man, Glad I could inspire. There is no question that camouflage patterns tailored to a specific type of environment will outperform a Multicam type pattern in its respective environment. There is something to be said for the versatility of a pattern like Multicam & MTP though.
***** Funny thing about Multicam, at least for me. In environments with a lot of browns my eyes have a hard time picking it up. In green areas though... it isn't as effective to my eyes. I do think that overall it can work well in a lot of environments, and the Army's new Scorpion W2 is mostly Multicam with a few tweaks. As for M-81 Woodland, as I said, color-wise it matches the environment where I life. Also, nostalgia because it is what I wore many years ago. As noted by another commenter, with some washings and a bit of use, it becomes a bit more effective over time, before it goes to hell and you have to buy new gear. LOL.
Before reading the comments: "I wonder if anyone else was able to spot him every single time" After reading the comments: "Ah, I'll take that as a yes'
never understod me,altough the beautiness of the woodland camo itself, why it is so decently performing in a wood environment (more in a mediterraneanor jjungle ambient, rather than in a nothern emisphere forest )even if has so few area of vivid green, overall
***** The problem with most digital is that the pattern is too small. At anything greater than maybe 75 yds, most just look like one solid color. That's the advantage to older Woodland, and something they tried to implement in Multicam to a limited extent. Problem with Woodland is it can often be too dark. Not to pitch for Kryptek, but the cool thing about their patterns is they blend small and large pattern for effectiveness at any distance with the lighter color palettes of more modern patterns.
Effective camouflage is all about colour and shape. A block of colours can merge into a 'blob' effect at range and mark you out as unusual in the environment. Skin on the face and hands tend to do the same. Hard shapes and edges (hat brims, weapons and equipment) stand-out. The British doctrine from WW2 and onward, always used lots of foliage and material to break-up hard edges. I think the British DPM from the 60s on was a very effective camo pattern and with correct 'edge diffusion' (using foliage/material) you really could disappear!
If you can, you should redo these in 4k. Thanks for these, they're great resources. For the record, M81 Woodland is bar none the most effective US Military pattern for stateside woodland environments. As much as I like them both, Multicam is too light and MARPAT is too dark and flat.
I run this particular camouflage in the jungle region of South East Asia. My buddies couldn't identify my shade if we were 30 feet apart. Of course you must include a ski mask or a face paint job.
I also like those woodland camouflage uniforms but I doubt that it would make sense for any US military branch at the moment, considering that they mostly operate in countries like Afghanistan or Iraq where most of the landscape is desert.
I transitioned from Woodland to Marpat when I was at 3/1 and 1/4. Marpat seems to work better in most heavily vegetated environment's. It seems to me the more open patterns like Tiger stripes, Woodland's and Solid's actually work better than the tighter patterns of these newer camo's. OD green is effective and seems the more you wear it the more sage color it turns that works well in desert landscapes. I personally think breaking up the human shape is the key more than anything...But you already know that.
That's a _really_ bright green forest. BDU's are visually, markedly better in say a continental forest woodline like in Kentucky, and not just with darker pine but deciduous woodlines. [I went to Ft. Knox in Summer 2004] Sun sticking through the canopy -- so a medium-ish density -- makes it a PITA. So: conditions of rich but more-varied colors & high contrast.
Just my opinion but out of all the camo going around nowadays woodland is still king as far as I'm concerned. Desert camo I gotta go with the 3 color style that was being issued during the Iraq invasion in 03... Great video Brent....
I wonder if by spray painting the BDU with a very light brown color would improve this camo. Because in a lush bright green setting it sticks out but you do look like a tree stump/ log or the ground. With khaki or maybe a light brown coating can not only brighten the uniform and give it that sun faded look but also make it more brown dominant. I find the green and the black just mesh together and what ends up happening is you become a dark blob at far distance. The good thing about this camo pattern is it’s everywhere in every surplus store making it very easy to modify.
I think this classic style woodland camo is a big hit for its retro appeal of the early Vietnam era and even clothing stores in malls all across the country have similiar replica patternsof this woodland pattern. Its retro, cool,a throw back and young guys and girls like it too.For this reason its very popular.Howevet,in the wood land area I think its alittle too dark to blend in well causing the wearer to move in the shadows slow amd careful.I personally like cadpat pattern the best in a greener envirement(.Canadian.Cadpat )is unfortunetly harder to obtain but is my favorite. Also the woodland is a little too big and blatchy up close and seems to work better at a futher distance..But the classic woodland pattern has that masculine retro appeal to it which everyone loves and looks good with anything.I also like the classic Vietnam Tiger Stripe pattern in a woodsy envirement better too because the pattern blends more subtle and is not as blotchy.Thank you for the videos.Cliff.
ya i would say that that is some of the most effective camo i have seen yet for a forest environment. wouldn't have spotted ya if i wasnt looking and half of the time i wasn't even sure then till you moved.
The uniform works well when in a static position or in front of trees, it stops being functional as soon as you start to move, it is too dark to be concealed effectively
My over 20 years old original woodland BDU is washed out so it looks a little bit brighter but also it works better than the fresh/unwashed in my opinion.
As a kid I’d play army at a local trail and of course be wearing m81, I had a guy walk up to my hiding spot and almost pee on me before I made myself known 😂 m81 works
Woodland is simply MUCH too dark in many applications. The only time I ever saw it work effectively was on a full moon night under a canopy of oak brush while on a land nav course in Utah. The guy right in front of me was almost invisible in that lighting condition. I also couldn't stand the heavy weight version, it looked like crap and took too long to dry out. For that reason, I would only wear the rip stop version which pressed much nicer in garrison.
got me at 6:28 you made use of the darker shade of the scrub and leaf litter as well as using soft cover, I would have been toast. Thanks for the video, very interesting :)
So far I've found woodland and tan are the most effective at least to my eye. Multi cam seemed like it stuck out and flat od green was kind of obvious too but not as bad as multi cam.
Impressive work through video clip. This location(north texas?) is quite simillar like summer season in south korea. june ~ august, deep & bright tone green leaves hold moisture with muddy dark brown tone soil and few bright tan color. 2years term for Republic of Korea Army(ROKA-south korea army), woodland pattern is exactly what I used during service. If I have to wear uniform again and able to pick one, 10~2 (A-tacs AU or multicam),3~9(USMC marpat or woodland / multicam for secondary)
The more faded and washed out this pattern gets the better it works, in my experience. Same with the british dpm
Even heavy fading?
Yes it goes more and more as a Multicam
The only problem with fade is that the fabric shows through much sharper and the actual camouflage pattern has little to no effect
Heard it was actually designed to work like that since the colors would fade relatively easily back then
For everyone saying “I saw you in _______seconds” let’s remember we are all LOOKING for him. If you were not actively searching for a person, you’d miss him more than you think

Im not saying it isnt.
You asked what it had to do with 'pride',
so i told you what i think the op had meant.
Still the best in my opinion. 🍻
Most effective in the woodland hands down over any other camo
The M81 works brilliantly for the environment it is made for - the temperate forests of NW Europe and NE North America.
Old school BDU Woodland and it's my favorite!
Where's Waldo, FREEDOM style!
+Chris A
No MERICA style.
2:20 Didn't see you
3:03 Spotted you about three seconds before you started moving
3:34 Nice.
3:52 Spotted you right away
4:49 That was probably the sloppiest so far
5:34 Thought you were that shadow on the lower left quarter of the screen.
6:48 Saw you half a second before you moved.
7:06 Nice
if he stays out of the sunlight you can't see him but if he's in a unlighted area it's not so easy to see him but he needs to stay still longer. he makes a move too soon
I'd like to see him in a ghillie suit
Camo pattern is still in used by MARSOC and some State Defense Force
Daniel527 yep
I know that the Ohio State Military Reserve, Virginia Defense Force and Tennessee State Guard wears them.
South Carolina used them until 2012, then went to UCP and now we use OCP
Gotta love classic Woodland
These videos are not only interesting but it's actually kind of fun, I like trying to pick you out before you move. This time I only spotted you twice before you moved.
This is amazing in the dark. Best night camouflage unless FLIR or night vision is used.
have you ever mixed three color desert pants with woodland top, just like in Lone Survivor movie? I feel like this pattern would work well in the environment you are shooting in. Love the videos!
Too dark. They should have lightened the brown shade and only had specs of black if that.
Semper Fi
Good video.
It has a lot of contrast with the environment
Works amazingly in the darker areas/ ground leaves
You must take also in consideration that in spring, fall and winter, there is less green and more brown (dark and light) from leaves on ground and black branches are more visible so i think woodland in even better in that time of the year.
Its a bit dark for environments that are mostly green. It worked really well in the areas with more earth tones to it.
aaah, a classic, timeless classic camo.. always work
After watching this, I'm re-thinking my use of woodland digital in the fall and woodland in the summer. They seem to perform about the same.
I really like this camouflage, I'm a fan of it
Woodland is badass
Unbelievable, always been against the effectiveness of this pattern, hated it, now after watching your video I became a woodland fan..
Wow great video and very effective. Some of the close up ones were bonkers. Also at 6:48 don't blink
I just found your channel and i love it, also i get to play where is Brent (Waldo) as you test the camo..
DementeX Glad you enjoyed it.
UCP actually sucks for most enviorments really other then urban, I know, it was my first issue uniform when I enlisted in the army
Inspired by your videos, I took several camouflage ball caps I have out into the nearby woods, placed them in several locations, the final one being side by side. The results:
5) Army UCP.
LOL.
Before reading the comments: "I wonder if anyone else was able to spot him every single time"
After reading the comments: "Ah, I'll take that as a yes'
never understod me,altough the beautiness of the woodland camo itself, why it is so decently performing in a wood environment (more in a mediterraneanor jjungle ambient, rather than in a nothern emisphere forest )even if has so few area of vivid green, overall
I absolutely love your channel keep up this good work!!!!!!!!!!!!
This video confirms my military experience . It’s too dark. Not bad, just dark.
Only upgrade should have been to take black and light grey/light brown?
That’s why you need to fade the shit out of your BDU’s
I just discovered your channel and I appreciate the work you do for this subject. Thanks!
Thanks for watching.
***** It good but it hasnt same results as digital camo has
*****
The problem with most digital is that the pattern is too small.
Who knew Woodland camo would work really good in woodland
If you can, you should redo these in 4k. Thanks for these, they're great resources.
For the record, M81 Woodland is bar none the most effective US Military pattern for stateside woodland environments. As much as I like them both, Multicam is too light and MARPAT is too dark and flat.
I just wish it was easier to find it in more modern fabric. The newer patterns tend to be much more breathable and quick-drying.
I run this particular camouflage in the jungle region of South East Asia. My buddies couldn't identify my shade if we were 30 feet apart. Of course you must include a ski mask or a face paint job.
New utilities always were too dark imo. When they more faded is when they really started to work well..
Bring back woodland camo and pasgt helmets!😭😭😭😭
I also like those woodland camouflage uniforms but I doubt that it would make sense for any US military branch at the moment, considering that they mostly operate in countries like Afghanistan or Iraq where most of the landscape is desert.
It seems to mix well with very dark areas in the greens it is surprising easy to find
go prone.works really well.
Hell yeah, Semper Fi brother another Horno Marine. I was with B 1/4 during the initial push in ’03 and Najaf in ’04.
do you not think the digital pattern is good? i think it is the best for breaking up the human shape
Late to the party, but yet another great review., thanks and keep up the good work.
The most dangerous where's Waldo!
ya i would say that that is some of the most effective camo i have seen yet for a forest environment. wouldn't have spotted ya if i wasnt looking and half of the time i wasn't even sure then till you moved.
Check his Greek lizard video it works pretty well.
The uniform works well when in a static position or in front of trees, it stops being functional as soon as you start to move, it is too dark to be concealed effectively
these types videos are fun to watch and fun to make also... good stuff man.. keep em com in..
Thanks
It also prevents you from being mistaken for a Military unit. I don't think any one uses woodland anymore.
M81 is experiencing a renaissance in 2023 and Im here for it
My over 20 years old original woodland BDU is washed out so it looks a little bit brighter but also it works better than the fresh/unwashed in my opinion.
As a kid I’d play army at a local trail and of course be wearing m81, I had a guy walk up to my hiding spot and almost pee on me before I made myself known 😂 m81 works
Great and informative video. You just gained a subscriber.
7:00 me after eating Taco Bell.
Lol love your videos man keep em coming!
I saw you about 55% before you moved in the green. When in the dead fall is when you blended well
Every service wanted to have the own after the Marines.Fail for the Army,Air force,Navy
woodland is the best camo for almost any forest terrain
My kids wants to test out my faded 1980's M65 jacket in the yard and garden. They turned invisible, it's amazing camo.
Thanks for watching, I have many more like them uploaded.
It's easy to see how this would be useful where the canopy casts more shade like in a jungle.
Yeah a lot of SOF still use woodland camo today the marsoc guys i deployed with all used it over the traditional marine deserts in Afghan.
Badass and good loking camo, my firest pattenr ever within urbans
