  • In this video I give a full in depth tour of the very rare and quite unique 1960 Rolls Royce Phantom Limousine James Young Series. I take viewers on a close look through the interior and exterior of this car while showing details, over viewing of features, and noting unique styling cues to the vehicle itself. I also show the engine and the details of it, start it up and see how it sounds under acceleration. A thorough tour/review of this car designed to give others a greater overall appreciation of the vehicle.

    I actually drove a similar one...James Young LWB S1. It gave me new respect for the chauffeurs who had to pilot them in city traffic. It was a real handful and no power steering. Being relatively narrow, it wallowed in even gentle turns. Mechanically, they were antiques the day were made. Even the transmission, which was one of the more up-to-date things about them, was an old GM version.

    To me, this body style epitomizes what RR is all about. Classic flowing lines which definately turns heads wherever this baby goes. In years past I used to see these floating around Beverly Hills and in the S. CA area. They were so well put together- and of such high grade materials, this is a lifetime car.
    In years past(don't know if it's still true) the hoods of these cars were sealed for the first 100,000 miles, where only a certified RR mechanic could touch the engine until that milestone.

    Why don't they build cars like these now, besides limos? All these storage units, foldout picnic tables, front and rear separation, front and rear radio controls, extra foldout seats and etc are great features!

    • @gaelenski_
      @gaelenski_ 10 років тому +10

      If by limos you mean most luxury vehicles, is because it's a premium, like this car was back then too. Nothing changed since this car was made and now, darling.

      Limosines are useles today, Because they are too long. In urban areas parking and maneuvering are torture. So that limos replaced by wide and relatively long luxury sedans.

      I think this car is called a limousine because it has enormous rear seat room, perfect for being chauffeur driven. Most people think of the stretch limousines like the Lincoln Town Car for example. On the other hand, this vintage Rolls-Royce Phantom limousine is really equivalent to the current generation Rolls-Royce Phanjtom EWB (extended wheelbase), at least in size.

    • @Spac8
      @Spac8 7 років тому +8

      Tacoma 55 He is serious, judging by the the look of his UA-cam, he's a Brit like me. Whilst auto transmissions, power steering, windows etc were all common place in the US by the 60's, our cars were a lot more basic! Even mid-luxury cars like Jaguars etc all has wind up windows until the early 70's, and right up until the mid 60's, heaters and a radio were actually dealer fitted cost options on most everyday cars. (My 1973 Mini didn't come with a radio from factory, and my Friends 1986 Ford Escort Popular had no cassette, player, cigarette lighter or a rear washer and wiper). My uncle worked for a local Triumph dealer, and had to fit heaters, radios and overdrives all the time. Power steering was a novelty, and most of the used cars my dad had when I was growing up in the 90's didn't have it. In fact, my neighbours 2001 Peugeot 106 doesn't have it, and that has hand crank windows and no central locking too! Same goes for auto's, only things I saw them on as a kid was BMW's and Jag's, they were considered slow, heavy and thirsty on fuel in smaller cars, and you only saw them on small cars if a person had a disability and couldn't use a clutch. My dad flat out refused to drive auto's until they became better over here in the 2000's he hated them that much. Even air con was a novelty until recently!

    • @Lincolntowncoupe
      @Lincolntowncoupe 6 років тому +7

      Actually in luxury car brands even as low as Cadillac, Lincoln, Chrysler (low in comparison to RR) even in some Chevy's and Ford's and cars of that stature, power windows were quite common even in the 60's. And automatic transmissions were extremely common in the 60's.

    Very nice and high quality machinery. 44 year master mechanic here. My experienced ears were right again when I made the assumption the lifters were rattling badly in that engine and clicked pause 3 times before I could see the oil pressure gauge that was reflecting light and it showed NO OIL pressure at all. That engine either has no oil or the oil pump has failed and it also has a miss. BUT...this only needs to be fixed because the car is worth it! The 380 and 415 rolls Royce V8s are lifetime engines and it is the previous owner or other neglect that is not the fault of the car quality. In other words a PERSON caused the at hand problem

    • @Brookside975

      suomenpresidentti He also failed to mention the amp gauge bouncing around and while showing how nice the interior is he forgot to mention or show the wear on the drivers door pull. Along with the engine sounding not quite up to par, to address these things and the privacy glass I'd bet this Rolls will need over well over $10,000 in repairs right off the bat. Nice car indeed but not to mention these things while talking it up would make me leary about what else is needed after all it is a 1960.

      That's because the design of the Sweptail was inspired by the classic Rolls Royce models.

    It always pains me to hear him rev the shit out of expensive cars right after he starts them up. Its about the worst possible thing to do to an engine.

    • @JackpodyDK
      @JackpodyDK 8 років тому +28

      +Matt Shoe Looking at the temperature of most of the cars when he revs it, it's either full up to temperature or close to. Not disagreeing with it being very bad to rev a cold engine, however.

      Driving it out of a garage is not enough time for it to get up to operating temperature, so stop calling people idiots. However, it's clear that he let the engine idle until it was hot enough to rev it a bit. Jeeze you guys.

      I let my old car run for a few minutes every morning before going to town. In the winter, I let it run on choke to help it warm up quicker, and rev the engine lightly once the idle stabilizes to disable the choke (electronic choke).

      If anyone watches closely, he usually cuts to the part where the car is warm enough.
