  • Welcome to Atop the Fourth Wall, where bad comics burn. In this episode, Linkara celebrates his 300th episode by looking at Frank Miller's Holy Terror!

    ORIGINAL INFO: The 300th episode is here! What is so horrible to deserve the spot? Well, it’s Miller Time…
    RUMINATIONS: And so begins the 300th episode spectacular! I had originally thought that Holy Terror would be a regular episode that I’d do some time after I finished All-Star Batman and Robin, but the more reviews I read and just how much I skimmed through it, I realized this was going to be something that needed to be big.
    The reaction, for the most part, has been pretty civil, as I had hoped at the beginning. There are still people arguing in the comments every now and then about religion in general being wrong or that Islam is evil or crap like that, but it’s usually pretty isolated incidents and even then they’re not shouting racial slurs or the like. My parents are the kinds of people who would probably rather I not review the book, not because they liked it, but rather they think I don’t know what I’m talking about. And I of course am the first to admit that I only did the bare minimum of research necessary for this book… but then again, that’s also more effort than Frank Miller put into it. We live in an age where it’s so easy to look this stuff up… but Frank is the kind of person who doesn’t WANT to research it. He’s already made up his mind about it and would prefer to embrace his ignorance and hatred.
    One thing I really liked about this one is how long the intro goes for. Some people would just want me to get to the comic and get it over with, but there’s soooo much history for something like that I love to dive deep into it if I have something interesting to share with people. One of SF Debris’ best qualities in his videos is putting forth background information about what went into things - process stories that explain creative choices and I love learning about something like that. As I said in the movie, I love learning about how creators came to the decisions they did - why one thing instead of another. Holy Terror’s history as a Batman book is fascinating to me. And as I said, I was actually in favor of a book like this… as long as it was made in a certain way. At the time of this writing, I recently released a retrospective on the first Blue Beetle. There’s a story where he goes to Germany during World War II and spots Hitler literally transforming into the devil. THAT is the kind of propaganda we want to see - something so utterly ridiculous that you can’t help but laugh. We don’t need propaganda that paints exchange students as potential terrorists - that’s just breeding bigotry. We need something like how I described in the video - terrorists defeated by Hostess Fruit Pies and a movie called “They Saved Osama Bin Laden’s Brain!” We need goofiness, not hatred. In some respects, it’s the way political cartoons work - make the subject into something of laughable ridicule.

If you want a response to this claim, I suggest Aubrey Sitterson's Beef Bros, which reverses the roles of the supers and cops. Instead of cops as allies of the superheroes, they are the supervillains who oppress homeless people and renters who can't pay the bills. Not to mention that the main villain is a landlord who has ice powers. And it's a comedy as well.

    Here's a scary thought: What if Frank Miller was always this insane, bigoted, callous, and mean-spirited, and he just had really good editors when he started out? Like, Daredevil, Year One, and TDKR were so good because there were people coming in after him sanding off the edges to keep the characters from slipping into his lunacy. But as he got older and more famous, fewer people were willing to go against him and tell him no because comic book elitism, and that's why his work only recently reflects the hateful asshat he's always been. And that's why he keeps getting work, because to the people close to him, he hasn't changed. He's just Frank being Frank to them. They're just eerily tolerant of his awfulness.
    Let that unpleasantness stew in your brain for a while.

      well, after having read TDKR and batman year one, i can answer at the first part of your question: Miller was already bigoted, and mean-spirited. it is pretty apparent in his treatment of women, who usually are either prostitutes, fat, fat prostitutes, or the kind of strawman/spoilsport that the new comissionner was. at best, they are in the story because related to a man.
      also, there are scenes that just feel full of contempt for opinions he doesn't share(the tv show with the psychologists, the interventions of the news criticizing batman, ).

You cannot lump everyone who is Muslim into one group and then label them as terrorists. Heck, there are some people who take it to an extreme and claim that everyone from the Middle East is a terrorist. (By that logic, they're calling Jesus a terrorist since he was born in Isreal.) I believe that our society has become scared of anything that is different from our norm, as has happened throughout the centuries.

    You know, the whole Dirty Harry comparison that miller pulled is totally insane when you think about the fact that even Harry Callahan would not go so far as The fixer in this comic. I mean, yes there is the thing in the first movie where Harry puts his foot at Scorpios wounded leg to press the info out of him where he hid the girl, but that was only in the first movie and he never did it again and he did get in trouble for it.
    Harry, while bending the law, was still a police officer and he even went after the vigilante cop gang in the second movie nor was he a racist bigot.

      Gee, that's sort of sad, when I think about it. Sure it's miserable for Dirty Harry to be a dick to everyone, but I agree that it's better for a jerk to be a jerk to everyone.
      Just think of it: Would you rather see a jerk keep his ire targeted to only certain people, or would you rather see a jerk be douchey to everyone equally? For me, I think both kinds are terrible people, but the picky-target jerk is worse than the I-hate-everyone jerk.

    • @LtHavoc1983
      @LtHavoc1983 7 років тому +17

      Well, the thing however is, that Harry does evolve as a character throughout the movies, in the first he is that cynical Cop held back by politicans that want to tell him how to do his job and then has to go to extremes to stop Scorpio, while in the second movie he has little sympathy for the Cops that go out and kill criminals because Harry still believes in the law.
      In the third movie he actually warms up to his female partner and changes his mind on that front, while in Sudden Impact he lets the rape victim turned vigilante off the hook because he feels that what she did was justified and he shows empathy towards her (its also the movie where he cynically remarks how he loves to wade through the scum of the city).
      By The Dead Pool, he is sort of a cop celebrity and is first against his Asian partner, but only because his partner often die in the line if duty and he doesnt want to see it happen again, still they become friends and Harry hooks up with the female reporter. While he is still Dirty Harry and still does what he does best, he isnt a cold blooded killer or total jerk.
      Harry would disagree with how the Fixer acts in the comic on principle alone even if they are terrorists because Harry still works within the confines of the law and has a strong morals and ethics he works by, even if he sometimes crosses the line.
      By the Way in the first movie, Harry is shown to be friends with the black doctor that treats him and in Sudden Impact he also has a black buddy that then gets killed, to the horror of Callahan. Just thought I point that out.

    8:56 You know what, I'll even try my hand at that. Let me set the scene;
    The Fixer and Natalie Stack have been captured and are in a cell guarded by one of not al-Qaeda's soldiers. The terrorist is young, maybe 21 at the most, and is more just going along with this because it's all he's been taught. All he knows about the US is what The Leader has told him.
    Natalie, in a moment of hungry frustration, takes a fruit pie out of her pocket, which the terrorist notices. When she explains what the fruit pie is, the terrorist says he has never had a fruit pie, that they are just rumors he hears from other people, a fairy tale of The US if you will. The Fixer takes a gamble and offers the terrorist the fruit pie if he will let them out. The terrorist takes a bite of fruit pie, realizes he loves it, and lets the two free. He offers his help to the heroes, but another terrorist comes in, sees young terrorist as a traitor, and shoots him dead. The Fixer and Natalie KO the other terrorist, and briefly say how monstrous terrorists can be, seeing how fast they can turn on each other, then the story proceeds.
    This way, I feel, is a decent compromise between Miller's seriousness and the doofy way propaganda comics back then were. What do you guys think?

    14:00 I THINK it's supposed to be a Litham, a men's veil used in North Africa (apparently it predates Islam by about 1000 years too). It's basically a men's Niqab, and likewise is taken off during pilgrimage. You see it the most on Tuaregs, who call it the Chech. BUUUUT , I'm pretty sure it's not used in Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, or Iraq, where Al Queda did much of its recruiting. I'm 99% sure that the 9/11 attack was by Saudis, not other nationalities. While I'm not ruling out North Africans as part of Al-Queda (since it started out as a volunteer group acting against "Western" imperialism), I really don't think that's worn by most members of Al-Queda. Afghans usually wear caps and scarfs separately. It COULD be a Shemagh wrapped around the face, but it's not drawn that way.
    I'd just call it a poorly drawn racist stereotype, since that's pretty much what this book is about.

    I actually looked up Leviticus 24. Apparently that quote is about a fight that broke out between an Israelite and an Egyptian. It also goes onto say that anyone who injures someone else is to be injured the same way, and that if you kill an animal you must make restitution -- life for life, but if you kill another human being you are to be put to death. Leviticus was basically a set of laws from what I gather. It also mentions the nature of the covenant Aaron had with the Lord and ritual guidelines.

I re-watch this review in its entirety. I want to thank you, Linkara. You helped remind me that fear is what they want and to not give in to that. We should all remember that. Now more than ever. I'm not gonna get political, just going to say that we shouldn't be afraid of others and if we turn our back on those that need our help out of fear, then we are no longer America, at least not the country I knew nor the one my family has served for 4 generations in the armed forces.

      Lord Tzeentch I didn't want to get drawn into a debate but you peaked my interest. I agree that they should be veted, our system is the most stringent in the world here in the U.S. Also how can you tell? How can you truly weed out terrorists from non. Simply holding those views isn't enough, as we of course have many Americans that hold similar views. Not a majority, but enough to cause trouble. Also once they're in, they're in and getting in via plane or some other means is beyond easy. "Coming for business or pleasure sir?"
      "Oh a lil of both... heh heh heh..."
      "Right. Enjoy your stay."
      That was a REAL conversation with a real customs agent and a Muslim passenger. He said to me "I just joke with them to see if they'll ever do anything. They never do! If I put on a sombrero and talk "like this" (a la Speedy Gonzales) they think I'm a Mexican!" My point is unless we're gonna be vetting people by just denying entry we are kinda screwed. And we literally can't do that, even if we wanted. Because Saudi Arabia is where allot of this comes from. And we're tied to them by a belt made of gasoline hoses and money.

    • @ghosty918
      @ghosty918 7 років тому +3

      Well, for one thing actually making sure people staying temporarily, leaving when they are supposed too.
      Second, keep track more of the radicalizing training camps and known terrorist sympathizers who recently took trips in the general area (there was actually a terror group down here in Oz that had left the country, to go to a known terrorist training camp, came back with a 'temporary' guy and plotted to blow up essentially Australian Superbowl)
      Vetting is an actual process, by checking backstories, making sure their reason for coming here check out and they aren't on any watch lists. We should also follow up on immigration of any kind, similar to how the US follows up on Marriage green cards. Especially from places with high terror or dictatorship places, such as the Middle East, Indonesia and South America.
      There should also be more integration. It may be too late for Australia, and possibly Europe, but Europe can TRY to avoid the self-segregation it is currently facing, with vast reaches becoming defacto Muslim and Middle Eastern. You cannot import massive amounts of people without helping them settle in among the entire population. If you do not, they will form communities.
      Little Italy is charming. It is also a TERRIBLE failure of importation and was the nexus of a criminal hub when Italians were imported en masse. Why do people think Arabic peoples wouldn't do the same thing, congregate together, maintain their culture and form a micronation without diffusing amongst the population like a Melting Pot is supposed too.

    • @MetaSynForYourSoul
      @MetaSynForYourSoul 7 років тому

      Lord Tzeentch But they don't generally do such things unless there's a reason. And even then we'd havta allow it. I'm not sure what you say is the scenario for all of us I mean we can still turn the place into glass. But the majority of these folks aren't terrorist. They care about their religion about as much as Christians do, which is not much. IDK what the answer is, but fear ain't it.

    • @ghosty918
      @ghosty918 7 років тому +2

      Well no, Muslims are generally more religious than Christians, but that's not really relevant. I also don't think Fear is the answer and never advocated for it. I advocate for wariness. There is a difference.
      What we need is more Post-Immigration Vetting, which works for more than just terror.
      We also need to recognize that it is EASIER, MORE EFFECTIVE and NOT ILLEGAL to put refugees in the closest safe place, like the vast camps still in the middle east but a safe part, that are empty and not being filled with immigrants. Apparently, this may be hyperbole, you can help 10 Refugees in the Closest Safe Nation (aka the place refugees are supposed to go, not wherever the hell they want) for the cost of 1 refugee in Europe

    The book size reminds me of some of the books that are used to collect newspaper comics. The last four collections of Calvin and Hobbes were printed like that, but those were in paperback, not hard cover. Also, they were collections of a full year of newspaper comics and were printed that way because of Bill Watterson's new Sunday strip structure, with some of the Sunday strips having 30 panels of varying sizes that used cinematic visuals and told massive abstract stories that needed the size increase so that people could read them. There are more ridiculous book sizes for comics (I own the second and fourth volume collects of Popeye), but even then they can be explained by they being older comics that had an entire news page dedicated to one Sunday strip. Holy Terror doesn't have that excuse.

    Good lord, this artwork is awful! I'm personally not a fan of Frank Miller's art style, but at least when I read "The Dark Knight Returns", the artwork was coherent and had a sense of effort and passion behind it. With this crap, I feel like I'm looking at a comic that hasn't even been finished. As in, it barely got started at all. Btw, I like how the title card for this episode parodies the comic's cover, but looks more plausible than the cover itself. XD

    Here's my new story for Frank Miller's Holy Terror (btw, instead of propaganda this is more of a social-political drama): After the same quote (instead with Osama Bin Laden's name), we have an establishing shot of Empire City. Then, one the ground, there's a young Arab couple (Ameena and some guy) walking to a bar, they enter, dance blah blah blah, but then it's revealed the guy has something beneath his coat, Ameena is angry and ducks, calling him a traitor to their faith and BANG! Title page. Transition to a News Channel, when it's the next week, and Ameena is on the News having survived but being crippled, and is giving a speech about how Al Quaeda aren't Muslims, they're terrorists, and that if we focus on racism against Islamic groups, then we leave ourselves open to terrorists. We transition to a man in front of his TV in the dark, we see in flashbacks that he has severe PTSD from the Iraq war, and that he'd lost his family at 9/11. He's a broken man, and could snap and go on a murder rampage at any moment. He goes to his closet where there's a jumpsuit acting as vigilante garb. An hour later, he's on the Police Station with Dan Donegal (fight me), and they're discussing the current situation. Dan says "Hey, I've been asked by the President to assign protection for the girl Ameena while she's still here, was hoping you could be of help." The Fighter (new name) goes over to her safe house with Ms Stack who owes him after something. They're talking when suddenly there's a knock at the door, we see The Fighter has gun behind his back, and suddenly, instead of answering the door, he shoots an adjacent window, figuring out it was a trap and looks through the peep hole, seeing a man in black garb to hide his identity, shoots through the door, and interrogates him before he kills himself. The three of them realise they need to move so they get into a car, Fighter driving as they constantly cross the street to be sure they're not being followed. They arrive at the train station where a man in a trench coat pulls a gun and a little fight ensues, suddenly multiple of them begin firing indiscriminately at civilians and they throw a smoke grenade, this is where we see they're fighting, however Fighter has a flashback just at the wrong moment and a terrorist stabs him, Ameena shooting him in the leg and Natalie trying to get the civilians to safety. The train is cancelled and they find a secluded spot to rest, where the Fighter fully divulges his backstory, and Ameena confronting them about murdering those men. Telling them that they need to prove they're better than the terrorists. Suddenly the Fighter gets a call from the police chief saying that they've found an Al Queada safe house and could use his help, having assigned someone else to take care of Ameena. We cut to Natalie and Fighter at the safe house which is being stormed by SWAT teams, along this we also see that Ameena is contending with her new protector who's actually about to kill her before she fends him off despite her wheelchair. After another action scene, Fighter is with the head of this Al Quaeda division, who he punches right in the face, when he's about to kill him, he thinks about what Ameena said at the station and decides to arrest him. *The end I guess?*

    "The Fixer is much closer to Dirty Harry than Batman." Uh, no. No, no, no and no. The Fixer is NOTHING like Dirty Harry! Why? Because even Dirty Harry has humanity. Remember the first time he did the "Do you feel lucky?" routine in the first movie. Yes, I know all the P.C. jackasses out there are gonna bitch and moan about it, but here's the thing - the addressee in that movie was just some punk kid who had fallen in with the wrong crowd and Harry knew that. It was his way of telling the guy to get his shit together. Also, the way that Harry delivers the speech is laid back, suave and downright jokey. Scorpio, however, is a monster who shows zero regret for his actions. And when Harry does the "Do you feel lucky?" routine with him, there is nothing but hatred in his voice. Harry is a good judge of character. The Fixer and, by extension, Frank Miller, are not.

    I don't trust frank to know or show this, but fragmentation type explosions have a much wider kill radius with shrapnel than with heat and concussive force. It also makes sense to maximize lethality for people who don't care about collateral damage. Mind you I'm not an expert on this, aside from having a comfy armchair.

    You know, I could actually see some potential in re-imagining someone like The Claw. Like say, have him originally be the head of an undergound, Japanese crime syndicate, who was so ruthless and inhumane, that at some point, through some kind of supernatural/sci-fi mumbo-jumbo, he ended up being physically twisted into some kind of yellow-skinned oni demon of sorts.
    I guess sort of almost like a modern day Shuten dōji of sorts.

    I am still thoroughly convinced that the dimensions of the book were designed that way so they would stick out & deliberately trip people up cuz it's the only way to get buyers' attention. Because ole' Frankie-poo has all the maturity of those annoying tween snots who have nothing better to do than harass & bully girls that they supposedly "like."
    I also speak from experience as someone who used to shelve library books. Ours had a copy of this piece of crap (that was no doubt donated by someone who didn't want it in their house anymore), & I had to watch my step when shelving stuff in that aisle. Same goes for a copy of "300" they had.

    Honestly I think a far bigger problem with the idea of a war on terror propaganda comics is that the war on terror is a lot harder to justify than the second world war.
    In Iraq alone more than half a million civilians have been killed and as a consequence of an illegal war.
    While civilian deaths were also high during the WWII the conflict was much more justified the Axis powers were the clear aggressors in the war and the allies were attempting to defend their own borders and the borders of their allies from invasion. And the Nazi invasion was accompanied by genocidal mass slaughters of those they deemed inferior.
    Iraq was invaded on false pretenses so that Bush could finish what his father had started and the occupation of Afghanistan has failed. As soon ad the United States pulls put the Taliban will reassert itself and so we’ve been stuck in that quagmire for close to 20 years. There are people who were born on 9/11 who are now old enough to fight in Afghanistan.
    You can’t really make propaganda for the war on terror that doesn’t endorse the war on terror. And well the general consensus on that is that it’s a pointless forever war that exists only so the military industrial complex can line its pockets with the tax payers dollars while expanding the American police state.

    • @badbeardbill9956
      @badbeardbill9956 3 роки тому +1

      Exactly. Thus the idea of satirizing such propaganda. Taking the propaganda to such an extreme that it's not only obvious but overtly facetious, as a form of ironic entertainment and condemnation of the war on terror. Now... still not the greatest idea... but not the worst.
      As for the comparison...yeah. WWII had issues too in a good number of ways. But that said, the Iraq War was basically Imperialism. WWII was a war between the leading Imperialist powers against upstart Imperialist powers. War between Imperialist powers vs just Imperialism...

    "The sixth century barbarism they represent. I'm speaking into a microphone that never could have been a part of their culture."
    To Frank Miller, and all the other islamophobes out there, the Islamic World preserved much of the classical knowledge from ancient Greece, things that we revere as being the basis for western civilization, when the rest of Europe was plunged into the Dark Ages and the vast majority of that knowledge was lost to them, aside from a few scattered places here and there, like in Ireland.
    Also, while religious minorities in muslim societies like the Umayyad caliphate were required to pay an additional tax and weren't allowed to hold positions of power, they were pretty much guaranteed freedom of speech and freedom of religion. Compare that to European societies at the time, who persecuted, jews and pagans, forced them off their lands and stole their property, and even tortured people, all in an attempt to convert them to christianity.
    Both sides have done great things and terrible things, and we need to acknowledge that, rather than applying a childish black and white morality system to two entire religions. History is NEVER that simple.

    Yes, because DC has ALWAYS been so original with their comic names, like Crisis on Infinite Earths, Infinite Crisis, Final Crisis, IDENTITY Crisis, Countdown to Infinite Crisis, and Countdown/Countdown to Final Crisis. And the title is totally the worst part of the comic, as we'll see in this review!
