11 years after you did this video...I on a last ditch effort to save one of my fAvorite punches found your video and saved it from the trash! It took me a long time to get that first stopper out...but once I did it went very smoothly and I have a new punch!! Thanks!

WORKED FOR ME...THANK YOU.....I have a butterfly punch that was not aligning. Of course, I am way past my purchase point to return the item. I tried you method and it WORKED!!! At first, i didn't see anything wrong, so i decided to file all the sharp edges with an emery board. What ever was making my punch stick, it no longer does, thanks to you and this video. So if you still read your messages, I truly appreciate you making this video. Take care

This video is great. I'd bought a discontinued punch in ebay, and it arrived jammed. To get the first button off, I used the tiniest screwdriver in my computer tool set, and it took a little effort, but once it was off, the rest of the repair was fast and easy. Thank you very much for showing how to make the punch useful again.

thank you so much for your tutorial on how to repair punches, i bought mine a month ago and punched 3 circles and trying to use it again all of a sudden it was stuck so i followed all your tips (it did take me a while to take off the caps, very difficult) greased it, but after 40 minutes battling with the punch all turned out just fine. Great tutorial.

Came here because I attempted to punch two thickness cardstock and the metal shifted. Bottom would cut, top would not. I followed Dave’s instructions, along with the following added tips and voila - my punch works again. $20 saved!
To remove the cap: I used my spare metal tipped pokey tool to remove the first cap - it took a number of tries, and I found squeezing the punch closed while prying helped. The pokey tool tip and the cap mangled a bit, but it worked. I wasn’t careful when pushing the pin through, and the second cap flew out just like Dave warned. Found it.
Futzing with the blades: I gently filed the inside of the top blade, and added a small dab of baby oil with a q-tip to the outside (the part that slides against the base metal). I wiped it all down really well with a napkin. I also found two channels on either side of the base where a protruding part on the top slides into when squeezing the punch. I placed the top back on, and gently pushed on the top to make sure the springs were positioned correctly to allow it to slide down and up. I think this was what had moved, and gently shifting the springs clockwise/counterclockwise helped correct the channels before reassembling.
Getting the pin back in: Tough! I squeezed the top of the punch slightly to align the channel and plastic until I could see all the way through it, then got the first part of the pin in. I squeezed the other side of the top to keep the channel open to get the pin in a little further. I ended up locking the punch closed and continued to hold pressure on the top to keep the channel open while I gently tapped the pin into place with a tiny eyeglass screwdriver and a mini hammer. If it’s resisting, the channel isn’t open enough and you need to gently squeeze the top to keep it open while tapping.

Then, I came across this video. Worked like a charm! As warned, the cap did fly across the room. Next time, I'll do this in a smaller room . . . :)

I never thought of it! But I did succeed in the end, albeit I did put a few scratches around the pin. I'm a bit disappointed with punches that open up while in storage (because of change of temperature, I assume) and then you can't close them again unless you pull them apart. Thanks for your help.

@@GWest5068 Thank you so much for this! This comment was as helpful, if not more, than the video. It took me two days to get the first cap off!!! Between this video and another one showing you can put the punch in the freezer to make the metal contract to free whatever material is "stuck", I was able to save my discontinued ribbon punch that I use all the time. So happy right now! I have a swap due this week and really wanted to use that punch. :)
Another tip: Take photos at each stage of taking the punch apart. That way you have a good reference when putting it back together.
