a few days in utah taking care of some van stuff and then we will be back on the snow full gas for the rest of the season! let me know if you have any questions! edit: i messed up the background music. its too loud. sorry about that!
Background music while you're skiing certainly adds to the video but background music while you're talking and trying to explain something is not necessary and basically is a distraction. Just one person's opinion as others may enjoy it.
Your production is top notch. Some of the best ski content on UA-cam. Appreciate the run down of your gear. Shows your dedication to the art of story telling
Yep, agree with that. Only got a GoPro last year and haven't used it for skiing yet but I was planning on it this season- putting the camera on the front helmet rather than on top was quite interesting- will have to try both and see how it goes.
@@AlanLamb11 I put it on the top of my helmet and when I tried angling it down so you can see my skis, about 1/4 was just my helmet so I would totally recommend the front of the helmet.
As someone who's always looking to improve their own production values on this platform as well... This video was incredibly insightful. Thank you Lucas!! 🙏🏻
Thanks for this video. I started watching your videos this winter and find them beautiful - they really capture your love of the outdoors and your love of sharing your experiences. I was always interested in how you got the shots where it looks like someone is following you or in front of you, but more than a ski-pole-length away. The results of shooting with the long stick and then erasing the stick from the edited film are amazing. Like you said in the video, it gives the effect of being followed by a drone.
Very insightful video, please do a pt 2 on how to shoot ski pov and 360 videos. i got the gopro hero 11 and the insta360 X2. been dying to learn how to shoot and mount them properly.
Wow. You answered so many questions I had. The drone looking shot that you do of your front and back are amazing. I didn’t know you could get that much of yourself in the picture with a selfie stick. Well done. Thanks for all the work you do to take us along on these adventures. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for sharing your equipment setup. Anxious to see how you like the max lens mod. I’ve been playing around with settings trying to get them dialed in for my trip to Breck next month. I’m stoked to see what you’re up to next week!
I would love to see your go pro settings. I go to DU in colorado and just started getting into filming when I ski etc. But if you could give us some insights on your film settings that would be sweet
So stoked you did this video and look forward to one talking about settings. I do a bunch of GoPro stuff trying to get my kids skiing and really looking to improve. So many times I look at the footage of the day and it just doesn’t get what I want. Also loved finally knowing how you do shots that look like drone footage. Mind blown - feel like i finally learned how a cool magic trick works 😂Thanks!!
Thanks for this gear review. Was wondering how you do the shots that look like a drone. Thinking of getting a gopro11 before things kick in for the year. Thanks for all the info and the ski vids...hitting all the same places me and boys like to ski so your vids are really great info for that too. Thanks!
It is obvious how much work you put into your videos and it pays off. Thanks for sharing your talent with us and I'm looking forward to seeing more! :)
Your passion for videography shows and your audience (people like me) appreciate it. Just keep doing what you do Lucas and resist the urge to sell out or make sucky videos like so many other UA-camrs
You get amazing shots the one with side of your skis carving is cool. How do get the shots going down the road in the van ? I guess from the vid the other day is a drone ? Do you just have it follow you ?
Lucas, what kind of mic do you use when you're not using your DSLR? Are you using a Lav mic while riding or is that audio coming straight from the GoPro Max? Thanks!
What's your opinion on the EF vs RF for your main lens there? Was is just because you already had the EF lens or mind expanding on your EF over RF choice here? Thanks for sharing this!
There are two huge snow storms forecasted for northern Utah in the next few days. Hope you could capture some of the winter wonderland in the little cottonwood canyon after the storm, through your lens.
thanks , helpful. I like how you say you consider yourself a videographer first, I have always felt that way. When you have the max on the helmet are you going to action camera mode (non-360) ? you have a drone too from your description/gear list - how do you get shots of your van driving from high up- just put the drone up , hovering, backtrack and get the shot then bring the drone back down? one more question or thought - I was surprised that you take your full size camera with you and use it while on chairs or in gondola...I would have thought those were gopro shots. Taking the full size out there is a commitment for sure.
awesome! and i shoot everything on the max in 360 mode. that way i can reframe it to get the shot i want and yup - i have a drone that i use to get the shots of my van driving. i just dont take it with me out on the hill. i actually just fly and drive manually. typically make sure im on a clear part of the road, and just do a simple flight path with the sticks and then find a safe spot to bring the drone back down. and yeah - im always taking my full size camera out there. gives me a bit more versatility to get some cinematic shots! thanks for watching!!
Great video Lucas as always. Do you ever see a circumstance where you would shoot in 4K 60fps? I know that the 24fps is more cinematic in effect, but it would be curious to see a pow day in that higher frame rate and resolution.
i actually shoot all my cinematic broll at 60fps and then conform to 24fps in post and everything i shoot with my hero10 on my pole is in 2.7k 120 so i can get super slo motion :) hope this helps. TLDR - i use varying frame rates all day, i just dont see a huge need for 4k and it slows down my workflow ultimately with the bigger files
Lucas, Can you make a video called "Sprinter Van Conversion: 2023 Update" or something along those lines where you cover what you've liked and disliked and what you've changed about Luna since you built her a few years ago? And also tips for people looking to get into vandwelling? I know you have plenty of content on this subject but I think next time you have a down day from skiing it'd be good to get a yearly update on your perspective towards this. Lovin' the vids keep up the great work!!!
From one photographer / cinematographer first to a rider second; great insight! Let’s try and link once you make your way to the PNW! Show you around Crystal 🤘🏼
First off, love the videos, keep ‘em coming. Secondly, would love to see another video on the settings and the more technical side of what you do. Lastly, how do you pack your camera in the bag so it doesn’t get accidentally damaged if you crash and burn? Cheers
thanks chris! im gonna put together a settings video here to follow up to this! and honestly, i put a shirt/towel in the bag and just put it in there. i take the mic off it but other than that, just gotta hope i dont crash too hard haha
I am getting my kit ready for February, so your video was timely and useful. I am someone who would be interested to know about what software you use, as a layperson.
I just barely discovered your channel and have been binging a bunch of your episodes! I'm a photographer/videographer in Utah as well, we should go shred sometime! I have an Ikon Pass.
What do you use to edit your videos? Curious what your workflow is with the 360 footage. I’ve found that Premiere Pro with the FX Reframe plugin works best for me.
Hey Lucas, love the videos. If you had to choose just one go pro, what would your choice be? Is there a big difference in the capabilities between the MAX and Hero 10?
if i had to choose one, i would go with the max for my purposes. there is big difference in what the cameras can do. for some people the hero 10 might be the better option, but i can really get a ton of angles with the max.
You look pretty comfortable skiing with the extended selfie pole. Do you feel confident with it on more difficult terrain? The 'floating camera' effect it produces is really cool. Those are always some of my favorite videos. Are you open to a more behind the camera role someday? Where you film pros on big backcountry terrain? I'm looking forward to your videos this year. Have fun and stay safe. Edit: Great thumbnail photo for this video. You look like a total dork! 🤣
yeah i definitely feel comfortable with the selfie stick on most terrain. once pitches start to get over 40 degrees then its safer if i put it away and just do headcam. i love the shot it produces. and yeah i would absolutely love to create more professional and high end films one day. thats always been the dream but i also love the creativity and stimulation in youtube vlogs. and yup - thumbnail is totally wack haha
I thought you for sure had a drone, too. How do you get those videos of your van going down the highway? Like the beginning of this one. Do you just wait for a random white sprinter to go by? One more question non tech related. Apres ski is a close second to actually skiing for most of us sub 50 ski day folks. Why don't we ever see you out partying with locals? You're almost celebrity on the hill.
hey ian! i do have a drone! i should have clarified more but this is just the gear i take up with me on the hill.i dont take the drone with me on the mountain - but yes i have a drone that i use to capture myself driving haha and thats a good question i dont really have an answer for. i am pretty introverted to be honest and i dont really drink. im not against it or anything just never really comes up i guess!
a few days in utah taking care of some van stuff and then we will be back on the snow full gas for the rest of the season! let me know if you have any questions!
edit: i messed up the background music. its too loud. sorry about that!

thank you brother! hope that helped out a little!
The trailer is sick
working on a new one now!
Congrats on your dmv success! Can't wait to see the upgrades for Luna and all the new ski gear for the year. Great video as always Brother
thanks brother! excited stuff coming up!
What is luna? the van?
Thanks for this video. I started watching your videos this winter and find them beautiful - they really capture your love of the outdoors and your love of sharing your experiences. Very cool Lucas! Have a good weekend.
thanks zach! you too man!
Thanks for sharing your different camera setups. Very informative! Keep putting out the kick ass videos you do!
will do man thank you for the support!

Another killer video man!🤙🏻💪🏻 Keep up the grind and the growth will continue to come my man! 🙏🏻🫵🏻
aye thank you nick! i know its not skiing but i appreciate you watching!
Thanks for sharing!!!
It would be good to check out what settings you use while filming.
Awesome thank you Morgan!
Canon R6 is a dope ass camera! Ive had mine for almost 2 years and couldn’t be happier. The RF glass is amazing as well.
yes dude i feel like its honestly the perfect camera!
Wow. You answered so many questions I had. The drone looking shot that you do of your front and back are amazing. I didn’t know you could get that much of yourself in the picture with a selfie stick. Well done. Thanks for all the work you do to take us along on these adventures. Keep up the great work.
thanks so much dave! that shot is my favorite to get haha always so cool!
Thanks for sharing your equipment setup. Anxious to see how you like the max lens mod. I’ve been playing around with settings trying to get them dialed in for my trip to Breck next month. I’m stoked to see what you’re up to next week!
thanks jeff! just got the max lens mod so im stoked to see how it performs. didnt know you were going to breck! that is awesome!
I would love to see your go pro settings. I go to DU in colorado and just started getting into filming when I ski etc. But if you could give us some insights on your film settings that would be sweet

Thanks so much for doing this video! I know I asked you about doing something like this last week... and here it is! Love it! keep up the great vlogs!
Awesome man enjoy!!
Very cool insight. Always neat seeing the behind the magic stuff 😊
thanks shawn! stoked you enjoyed it!
Great stuff dude, would love to hear more about the settings! Cheers
Hell yea brother thanks for watching!
You get amazing shots the one with side of your skis carving is cool. How do get the shots going down the road in the van ? I guess from the vid the other day is a drone ? Do you just have it follow you ?
thanks bon! the one of the van down the road is with a drone! and nope im flying it manually actually haha

Glad you did a video on this, I had so many questions in your live stream 😂 I’d be interested in some camera settings for shoots and gigs
I have a video on my settings too
There are two huge snow storms forecasted for northern Utah in the next few days. Hope you could capture some of the winter wonderland in the little cottonwood canyon after the storm, through your lens.

hell yeah dude love it!! ill be there in january!
Definitely do a pt 2 on the settings and software please! Maybe even a video where you go through the process of editing.
gotcha will do man!
A question, Lucas. When you hold Gopro pole with 360 MAX. The Lens are supposed to look up (1st Lenz) and down (2nd Lenz)? Or it doesn't matter?
I am curious as to what video editing software you use the most? Also, where do you get your background music? Thanks,
Pat
i use adobe premiere pro and i get my music from epidemic sound!
First off, love the videos, keep ‘em coming. Secondly, would love to see another video on the settings and the more technical side of what you do. Lastly, how do you pack your camera in the bag so it doesn’t get accidentally damaged if you crash and burn? Cheers

Congratulations on passing the DMV exam 😅 🤘 Interesting information on recording equipment. Can’t wait to see your new skiing gears 😎
haha thanks breaux! more ski videos soon
What do you use to edit your videos? Curious what your workflow is with the 360 footage. I’ve found that Premiere Pro with the FX Reframe plugin works best for me.
i use adobe premiere and use the same fx reframe plugin for all my 360 work!
How do you record your voice when skiing? The quality is crazy nice.
What GoPro Hero 10 settings do you use?
So much work goes into these video, keep it up bro!
Thank you homie!!
Let's rock it....
yewwww
This video was a huge help! thanks for making this!!
awesome glad it was helpful!
Thanks for this video, it further solidified my R6 purchase. I love that camera!
yup r6 is great!!
Thanks very informative
awesome!!
hey just wondering have you had any problems with he gopros battery life failing while in cold weather
yeah for sure i wouldnt call it problems but the cold definitely drains the batteries a bit quicker!
Love your videos man! Keep it up
The 360 max has to be straight up and down on the stick to delete the pole correct? If it is tilted then the pole would show up on the shot?
Yes correct. And the pole width has to be less than the width of the max
im such a camera nerd so this was insanely interesting!! thanks for sharing
awesome! glad you liked it!
I'm watching this in a Starbucks in Bozeman lol, but I made it out here from Jersey hopefully I'll catch you at Big Sky man, stay safe!!
Hell yea man Bozeman is awesome!!
Do you have any problems with elevation sickness?
not usually, no! if i do, i drink a gatorade ASAP

and yup - thumbnail is totally wack haha
yes there is a clear difference between cameras! hope that helps
haha dope brother
You have to take an actual test when you renew your license in UT?
maybe its because i was going from a colorado license to a utah license, but yup - 25 multiple choice.
Good job man 👍
thanks dude!

I am glad you passed the exam, or else we won't be able to see luna anymore😅
hahaha i know right! we're all good!
How is the audio in this video so good
i didnt think it was that great but maybe because i was wearing a lav mic!
