I did this same kit on my 86 Toyota 5 years ago and I agree with the other comments posted. The rear springs will soften but it will take a year or more. I never put on the overload springs, my rear springs hit the stops at about 1600 pounds in the bed and that's more than the 22R likes. The whole ride will improve with stacker blocks under the upper ball joints, a front diff drop will save the stress on your CV joints. Once the upper ball joint blocks are in you can lower the torsion bars to mid range again and the IFS has downward travel which makes all the elements of this suspension kit work together. They are awesome trucks, hope you are still enjoying it.
Thanks! That's all good info. Front end is similar to what I did on the 100 Series Land Cruiser. Not sure when this truck will get those blocks and diff drop kit, but they'll definitely improve things like you said. Merry Christmas!
i did the same to my 87 recently, but ended up taking the last overload spring off, and took the 3rd leaf down out and it put me exactly where i wanted. I love these trucks, yours is a beaut.
When you said you removed the last overload spring off, you mean, the first of the spring pack from the bottom ?
@@billythomas4527 yessir, I ended up putting my springs completely back together though as I’ve added a rooftop tent, still pretty stiff even with the weight but just been running it in hopes of settling in future
@zomic5438 Gotcha ! I have bought some CS009R springs, the greasable shackles and all the bushings I need. I mostly drive with almost nothing in the box so I will also be doing this process. The only thing I am missing from the OME stuff is the inner sleeves for the front eye bushings ugh....
Thats exactly my truck😍 same color same bed same color interior same strip but my dont have no rust but crazy how much the value on these 4x4 pick ups going up 🔥
For realz! Peep out my Toyota channel! Adventure Teq!
Just bought a 97 tacoma 4x4 2.7 two weeks back. 20k on the odo and pristine flawless. Collector had it ......along with dozens more! Timmy C Arizona
Toyota outdid themselves with this model. It was extremely popular here n still is... I opted for a lower OME lift on my 2010 Hi-lux d/cab n even that height was high... Have changed shocks x3 times since... Greetings from 🇿🇦 🙏🏾
Greetings! Sure love these little trucks. 🇺🇸
Your rear springs will settle. I had those same springs on 87 4runner. If i had to make a suggestion. Pull the overload spring off each pack. It will ride smoother and flex better. Especially since you don't have weight in the back.
How does that setup w/o overload springs ride compared to stock?
My '94 pickup Xtracab 4x4 (22RE, DLX) rides rough, and I get that it's not gonna ride like a Cadillac, but it'd be nice if it was smoother than it is now.
My setup is stock other than Bilstein replacement shocks (~6 years old), 32" BFG KO2's, and a Total Chaos idler arm. I go offroading occasionally but I don't want a lift as I'm more into motocross, and that'd only make loading dirtbikes more difficult.
Did you have to reuse the inner sleeves for the leaf spring bushings?
looks good. wish i had that terrain in my backyard
Nice truck man! Nothing beats a classic 80s toyota 👌 I'm looking into trying this emu set up for my 87 thanks for sharing 👍

You're not talking to the camera...you're talking to 401 of us!
Nice job man....im enjoying your videos.

Looks awesome! I did the same suspension to my 86 but also added 4Crawler ball joint spacers. The rear of mine settled some and eventually started riding better too but still has a lot of rake. It’s definitely way better than the worn out stock suspension.
Hey, with the ball joint spacers I know OEM factory upper ball joints have the four mounting bolts pressed in. How did you remove them? I bought new ones (OEM) not realizing they have to be four longer bolts.
@@oldowl4290 it’s been so long now I honestly don’t remember. I used either Moog or 555 for all the parts but I believe you can just knock the studs out with a hammer to use the longer bolts.
Looks really good man almost perfect stance. Crank on your front torsion bars if you want to add a half inch to front end eh? Stoked just got a ‘90 SR5 xtracab 4X4 V6 rust free every avail factory option perfect factory paint/graphics/interior.. got super lucky to find it and on price. Awesome trucks yours looks so cool.
Thanks dude! I did crank up the front a bit, sits closer to level now with a tad bit of rake. But they front is quite stiff, and will be until I get some gear mounted up there I’m afraid.
Glad you see the truck’s good for what it is. I don’t plan on putting much into cosmetics of this old rusty rig. And if she ever gets fully built out I will proudly drive here rusted holiness on every trail around! LOL
Good luck with your gem! 💎
A lot of rust for a Utah truck. I can see that happening here in Michigan due to road salt in the winter. Nice suspension upgrade.
Right! We use salt here too. And live next to the Great Salt Lake! This is what happens to practically any vehicle here over time when owners never go to car washes after winter storms, all winter they just leave the salt brine soaking all over their car, storm after storm. It’s a shame.
Glad to see this video, currently have my dads 86' Gas Turbo truck after he past away. I'd like to do a restoration on it with also adding some upgrades. I have a set of 33x12.5x15 that i will use left over from my 4Runner. Wonder if this kit will provide enough clearance to run them .
Looking forward to seeing more videos.
I believe this kit will do just fine. A lot of lifted trucks have a little rubbing at full turn or full stuff when off roading. But I’m sure it would be just fine. The forum at ih8mud.com will be able to give you a lot of info, don’t take my opinion as facts.
Sounds awesome!
Nice truck and good work.
Thanks.
Did you go with the rear HD springs? If so, just remove the bottom arched add-a-leaf. That will take 1.5" out and make it less stiff
I did. Mainly for heavy hauling and in case I ever hunt a big animal. I’ll keep that in mind, but don’t anticipate moving things around on there. Thanks for the reminder!
@@CaptMaxADV I just did the AAL removal out of my '85 4R. It made the ride way more tolerable and lost only an inch of lift
👌🏻 Thanks!
Good job, you rock!
Thanks! 🙌🏻
Big big big fan of your truck !!!!💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
GREAT Video Brother!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Damn dude that a nice truck, love it.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, I’m not very knowledgeable about cars but I’m trying to get more into them.
I recently inherited an 86 Toyota Pickup and I’ve been wanting to replace the suspension, and I’ve considered a 2in lift as well (but I don’t want to do a body lift).
You mentioned this is a lift kit, but you didn’t use any coils and I don’t think you added any body spacers (at least I didn’t see any or see that process). So my question is, where does the added height come from?
Thanks in advance for your time!
No problem. And congrats!
There are no coils on this type of vehicle. It uses regular old leaf springs in the back and what is called a Torsion Bar for the fronts. T-Bar.
The rear height increase is from more arched springs, and there are other means to add to this if necessary, and this both overcomes probably 1-2 inches of sag in the rear on these old trucks, but also lifts it all the 2” above original factory height. So you’ll notice a pretty large difference.
The front T Bars are replaced on this system with thicker diameter rods, which support heavier weight up front. Things like a winch, heavier bumper, off road lights, all the heavy stuff. And the height is set by dialing in the adjuster at the rear, where the T bar is attached to the chassis.
It is possible to simply adjust the old factory T bars to a higher setting to attain some lift. And some folks do that. But the new replacement ones have a higher ride height on the spline indexing, and can be adjusted to support all that additional weight.
The shocks up front on a T bar suspension have nothing to do with the suspending of the cars weight. Unlike more modern vehicles where the shock is surrounded by a coil spring and the unit handles all damping AND suspending of the weight. 🤓
@@CaptMaxADV thank you so much for your response! This makes a ton of sense and clears up my confusion. I’ve been learning a lot about suspension but didn’t know you could replace T Bars with thicker options and I didn’t know they were height adjustable.
I seriously appreciate content creators like you who are willing to share your knowledge with newbies like myself. 🙌🏼
I own 2 Yotes
Looks awesome 👏 what’s size of rims and tires you put it on !!?
Thanks! 33/10.50/15 tires. 15x8" wheels I'm pretty sure.
Hey sweet content thanks! What type of wheel and tire setup? Nice setup
Thanks! Most all of my Toyota and off road content is on my other channel. Adventure Teq.
The wheels are American Racing Outlaw II’s. With 32” Toyo M/T’s.
Nice truck 🤙🏽
Thanks!
After the lift and bigger tires, were you able to use 5th gear? I have an 86 I purchased new. I have a 3" body lift on it and at one time put 33" Mud Kings on it. For the most part, I was not really able to use 5th gear anymore. I had no problem with 32" BFGs before that. I'm soon going to put new tires on mine and from past experience, will stay with 32" at the highest. My truck was not old at all when I had the Mud Kings on it so there was no power loss due to age, etc. It's still stock today.
It has an automatic trans. And unless it’s flat with no head wind it struggles in overdrive. I’ll regear and lock the rear eventually.
@@CaptMaxADV , thanks for the reply man, much appreciated. Mine is the standard 5 speed and I had changed it to a 4 speed. Lol. I'm actually planning to have mine as an everyday driver soon. My Dad had it for quite a while so I'm doing quite a few repairs to it. New carb, AC, etc. I know I'll stick with 31-32" tires for now. I have a side by side for hunting so I'm not really in need of the truck having huge tires.
That looks great... what is the tyre size? how much lift did you gain?
Thanks. I think it was 4.5-5" or more of lift overall, depending on where you measure from. MASSIVELY larger in comparison for sure!
Nice! Did you buy the 2.5” lift kit? Got any new video of the truck after the suspension settled?
I’d give it another 6 months or more before it’s really settled. Yes it’s the 2.5” kit. Future content for this and my other Toyota’s will be on my other channel. Adventure Teq.
Unreal, un-freaking believable, jam nut? Or known in Japan as a sushi nut...
Is this a 4WD model? Looks so badass
Thanks! Yes, 4WD. 👍🏻
I think i like the 32's better than the 33's. Do you still feel the need to gear down though?
I’d be okay with 32’s, but with this much lift I find the 33’s to be perfect. Yes, I’ll plan to regear and lock the rear at some point. The 33’s aren’t bad around town, just up highway hills. Off road in 4 Low it’s fine.
Narly looking Yota… I would treat the rust and leave it as is… Character
Great Vid! I just picked up a 87 4runner and looking on putting the OME kit on it. Did you go with the HD shocks and rear springs or is it the Medium? Thx!
Great news! And I went with the heavy springs. No regrets. And if you don’t like the stiffness then just haul around some heavy stuff in the back for a while!
anyone on here have this setup but with 5100 im trying to decide if the arb rear shocks are worth it.
Nice ! So how does it feel now off road? I’m thinking about adding this kit to my 2020 FX4 Ranger.
I’m primarily looking for off-road benefits.
I mean, for a thirty year old truck it's night and day, I mean it supports whatever gear I can load it up with and comfortably gives a nice ride while providing ample clearance for the larger tires that give you the ground clearance you need to tackle most any trail. OME has proven to be a good balance of comfortable performance on and off road on the three trucks I've installed OME suspensions on. I would not hesitate to install it on any truck you've got sir! Would certainly opt for OME over practically any USA made suspension because I'd suspect that most of them are made and sold to give lift without so much for great performance on and off road. I could be wrong, don't have any real experience, but just from what I've observed. OME is dialed! My large Land Cruiser wagons (100 & 80 series) have the HEAVY OME springs and I have never felt like they were overkill when empty but perfect when fully loaded or trailering. The Pickup suspension here I went with the normal setup/non heavy springs. Generally you can just add the sing leaf to the rear pack later if you find that your setup warrants larger load carrying capacity, but I was told by Desk To Glory that the HEAVY set on the pickup is pretty rigid on a lightweight (empty and free of rooftop tent/overlanding outfitting) pickup.
If ya get one on our Ranger come on back and let us know how you like it!
Jeremy Adventures this is so encouraging! I really appreciate your time in responding. I contacted the companies who sell suspension and they both said to go with Fox, but it is a business too. I think OME is honestly the best bet as well. Thank you so much and I will definitely come back and let you know!
Nice, how did you manage a farm truck plate? Asking because I need to get one on my 86 because I know it won't pass emissions now
All vehicles in Utah older than 30 years qualify as a “Vintage Vehicle”. I’m pretty sure you have to state that it’s not your main transportation. However, in Utah right now, there is a total BS bill going through to eliminate that, or at least drastically change those rules. So stay tuned for that!
Did it come with the shackles and replacement bolts?
My kit from Cruiser Outfitters didn’t come with the leaf bolts to the frame, but he gave me them. And yes, the kit includes the greasable shackles. But confirm with him when ordering.
Just bought a nearly identical setup for my 89, which shackles are you using?
I do believe these are the ARB greasable shackles. Good luck with it! I’m about to do an engine swap on this old rig. Just another 22RE. Follow along at the new Toyota channel! Adventure Teq.
ARB/OME Old Man Emu greasable shackles that is...
Badass...just curious, why did you have to replace torsion bars? Do the new ones allow for more adjustment? Thanks
Thanks dude. They are part of the kit for a full suspension replacement. Yes you can just opt for new leafs if you want, but i intend to add weight up front and was already tearing it all apart. Winch and lights and heavier stuff. The 30 year old T bars were pretty tired anyway.
Add a upper ball joint spacer 1"1/2"
My name is Darby, too ;)
Nice! She’s a favorite of mine for sure!!
Do they make a Toyota T100 4x4 lift I can’t see them on there website , are the same as yours ?
And what do you thing of lift master life kit??
Thank
Amazing transformation bro ! :D could you tell me the offset of your wheels ? :D
Thanks! I’m sorry but I don’t know it. Next time I have the wheels off I can measure it. You can keep an eye on my Toyotas at the other channel: ua-cam.com/video/fBwSXjvMRZI/v-deo.html
Can hear that timing chain slapping around... did you fix the guides on it yet?
This engine is going through a rebuild right now. Here’s the link to my Toyota channel: ua-cam.com/video/fBwSXjvMRZI/v-deo.html
@Whisky J1 ADV I just finished an overhaul on an 87 22r it's a peppy little motor with a cam and stroker upgrade.
Translate to English please.
@@CaptMaxADV in my case I had to cut the adjusters off the torsion bar, they were super nailed. It looks like you changed the torsion bars to give more height. Or you just regulated more height with the regulators. to take into account that the entire front end is required. case semi-shafts, kneecaps. very good work. congratulations.
Thank you for translating!
My torsion bars fortunately were not seized. Well greased still from factory after 34 years. Boots were intact, which made that possible I’m sure.
I did replace those old factory ones with new stronger ones. They will support heavier weight up front for winch and light bar.
Thanks for watching!
@@CaptMaxADV thank you for sharing your work on the toyota. I own a 2.8 diesel double cab sr5. 3L year 1997 engine. Restore little by little. not with 31 wheels but with 265.75.16 mud. good truck. just satisfactions. I am from Argentina, here they entered from 81 to 97, entirely Japanese and then they began to assemble with some Argentine things but with control of Toyota Japan. we will continue learning.
How stiff were the rear shocks when you got them? I just got some of the same ones, but they're pretty easy to move and I can hear the oil sloshing around when I shake them. I'm thinking they sent me a dud?
All shocks I’ve ever installed new are “charged”. Meaning pressurized. The valving usually restricts the flow to a slow rate. When you take off the “retention/shipping” band they always extend. At least from my experience. If ya call and talk to the experts at Cruiser Outfitters in Utah they’d be able to set you straight without any question. Good luck!
Hows the ride quality?
Primo. Even unloaded in the bed it’s not like rock hard or anything. Keep a few things in there any it’s just fine.
new torsion bars are longer than originals?
Same length.
What rims are those? I have an 83 model, they look sweet
I think American Racing Outlaw 2’s.
@@CaptMaxADV yeah they look very similar cheers👍🏻
What made you pick old man emu over the other suspension ?
Which other suspension? Other lift kits? Or the stock suspension?
I’ve run Old Man Emu on my trucks for years. They’re a super solid product with excellent customer service and local support through my friend’s distribution and install shop. Cruiser Outfitters in Salt Lake City Utah is my go to supplier for 98% of my Toyota fleet’s needs.
I wouldn’t bother with any junk you can buy from 4 Wheel Parts. Unless it’s OME or Dobinson, or Icon Suspension.
But I’m not an expert. Just my opinions. 👍🏻
Jeremy Adventures any thought on dobinsons? Is it as soft/ smooth as old man emu?
Roveir Datu I’ve never seen a set of Dobinson’s in person. But I’d give them a shot with full confidence. If ya do, come back and let us know!
Jeremy Adventures I actually have the dobs IMS. I’m thinking of debating if I should change or uprgrade or what not, but first I’ll upgrade the tires first. I’m currently running on load E, which is contributing to the firmness of the ride and which I’m trying to fix.

does the emu kit also fit a 2wd standard cab?
Sorry but I do not know. Contact the good folks at Cruiser Outfitters in Utah and they’ll have your answers!
Does anyone know where you can get the 1986 style torsion bar adjustment bolts like the ones in this video? I have only ever been able to find the newer style without the jam nut. Thanks
I have a 94 pickup 2wd, do you believe this kit will fit I was reading online and they say from 86-95 just not sure
I’m not totally sure. Best bet is to call Cruiser Outfitters in Utah on the phone and ask. They’ll know 100%!
What size rims and tyres you running? Looks good.
Thanks a lot! These are 33/10.5/15’s.
What kind of rims
Just some aluminum wheels from the 80’s. I have a video showing how I polished them up. They used to look terrible!
@@CaptMaxADV ok thank you
Is the lift kit is the same with ln166?
Sorry, don't know!
Hey, i know this video is a few months old, but i'm about to rip the rods out of my 86 4Runner, any tips (other than those witnessed with the jamb-nut)? Also, what were you grinding on your new rod? I got the sway-away rods from LCE Performance. Thanks in advance.
Yo. Good luck. Fortunately my front end T Bar splines were well greased with intact original boots, so they slid out easy. If yours aren’t then you should definitely soak them for a few days (and all other bolts) with penetrating oil.
Don’t bother unthreading U Bolts, just cut them. If you do the rear axle.
What I was grinding where the rear splines on one of the T Bars. I believe that OME mistakenly marked and shipped me two R/H bars. I had to grind out one spline out to line up with the tensioner properly. You’ll see what I mean when you get into it.
LMK how it goes. 👍🏻
@@CaptMaxADV Just got done with the T Bars, they slid out just like yours. Intact boots with a little bit of grease left over. Thanks for the video!
@@coastiekid88 That's great! I ended up cranking mine up pretty stiff just to get her sitting more level. It's definitely firm up front but has less rake and should tame down over time, particularly when I finally get a winch and bar up front. Thanks for stopping by the channel!
Geez you know if you spray the dirty oil on to the underside at every oil change the rust would stop.
LOL!!
How tall is the lift?
It says 2-2.5” on the website
PROTECT THAT FRAME MATE!
Uhhhh, more likely to replace that frame! 😆
Does the length come in different size or one size fits most?
I have a 85 with an existing lift from origiowner and idk how many inch lift it is
I’m not totally sure. Are you sure it’s an Old Man Emu system? I’m sure there are varieties of lift heights from all sorts of manufacturers. I don’t know if OME makes anything higher than a 2.5”. Call Cruiser Outfitters and they’ll know for sure!
What part number are the u bolts you ordered? Arb suggests one and 4wp website suggests another.
Sorry but I looked through all my invoices and must be missing that one. Give Cruiser Outfitters a call and they’ll set you straight. 👊🏻
Man, i love the wheels, can you please tell me what brand they are and size? Thank you
I believe they are a generic “Centerline Wheels” type of wheel. They’re 15 inches. And I think they’re 8 inches wide.

I would believe that it does. But whoever you order it from will tell ya for sure.

How tall is this lift kit? 4in?
2-2.5 inches. Feels huge though, especially with new 33” tires.
are you in utah? noticed the cruiser outfitters hat. used to pick up all sorts of goodies when i worked at a Landcruiser shop nearby
what did you pay for this? great video loved to do this on my t100
Thanks. I am in Utah. I must have paid somewhere around $1K for the suspension. It sure brought this truck back to life! I definitely recommend it!
@@CaptMaxADV ill have too look into getting those leafs!! found the torsion bars on yotatech for around 200 bucks. working on my steering just replaced the steering box pitman arm carrier arm and steering dampener about to do the inner and outer tie rods along with an alignment and 33s for this winter!
Niiiice! I have all the front end parts to replace here pretty soon. Hope to in the next couple weeks before winter sets in.
how is so rusty out in the desert like that?
The Great Salt Lake in Utah, where it’s been it’s whole life, gets things pretty salty. But they treat the roads here in winter with salt for ice. This is the result of almost any car when someone isn’t diligent in washing off that salt after storms. And the Toyota pickups are known for being exceptionally prone to corrosion in these parts of the car, here it’s worse!

It’s an OME not an OEM. Old Man Emu. It is indeed high. It’ll settle down over time.
As in Catalytic Converter cat? I have no idea. It had a new muffler when I bought it 5 years ago. So maybe... 🤷🏼♂️
