    I’m 51 years old, I coach, and i STILL play competitive ball… An old school tip I had a problem with is; “KEEP THAT BACK ELBOW UP!!” When I played little league, almost every coach I played for told me to incorporate that into my batting stance, as a perfect starting point to a perfect swing… As a young ball player, I subconsciously used to think or KNOW that was wrong, (for me!)… You can make a GREAT case that it works for Bryce Harper, now with regard to teaching that to each and every young ball player, for me, that would go under the category of; “old school batting tips that do more harm than good”… I would like to respectfully ask Coach Justin: Can the, “BACK ELBOW UP” be number 6 on this list?? OR, at least a dishonourable mention!?

    I played High School and college baseball back in the early 70s. My coach was a big Ted Williams guy. I totally agree with all your hitting tips. Keep up the great instruction

    Very good advise about squashing the bug. I preach to my FP girls that a solid heal plant drives the hips into motion and that pulls the back foot.
    The same thing I saw a local college coach having his girls do a drill that focused on their front elbow coming up. The elbow is a result of leveling the hands quickly. Same as bug drill focusing on the effect and not the cause.

    I was always confused because I read Ted William’s book and while he does say a slight up swing is best, he also says you need to stay on top of the ball. What he really means is that your HANDS should stay above the ball while the bat’s path comes slightly up. I’ve tried both “staying on top” and trying to hit the bottom of the ball with a slight upswing and I can tell you that in a game “staying on top” has brought me more success. I know it’s “real vs. feel” but for me, I can only control my hands, and my hands come down to start the swing and the bat follows that path, then you finish high with your hands so that bat finishes with that slight upswing. Again, it’s a cue thing, trying that slight upswing approach only lead to weak grounders and pop ups for me in game.

      Home runs will come! There’s nothing wrong with consistently hitting doubles and triples. Keep squaring it up and hitting the ball hard… I promise, good things will happen! 👍🏼

    This is kinda a weird question but I’m currently going into my sophomore year of high school and I haven’t played baseball since I was in 5th grade and recently have been wanting to play again so would you have any tips? Also don’t even know if it would be realistic to even play after that long but I’m just curious lol

      I wouldn’t recommend that…the first pitch is often a fast ball in the zone.

    • @thesaroscycle_archive
      @thesaroscycle_archive 3 роки тому +1

      @@mr.johnson9252 But the pitch being a fastball in the zone doesn't mean anything if I won't hit it well, which I often don't when I have not seen a pitcher before. In fact, a fastball in the zone serves as a good look at the pitcher's tendency, which makes it important to watch (at least for me).
