The housing blocks you saw are actually used to be subsidized housing for low income residents. When it was firstly built in the 1980s, when it was still looking pretty fancy. Many Indonesian movies and TV series were shot in that neighborhood. You can check Movie "Mengejar Matahari" or music video Numata - Raja Jatuh Cinta. They were shot in that neighborhood. We also have tons of Indonesian TV commercial shot in that neighborhood. And nope, that blocks are not the first skyscrapers in Jakarta. The first skyscraper blocks in Jakarta actually is in Thamrin, Bundaran HI region. But, they might be the first multistorey public housing in Indonesia.. cannot confirm though.
Later the local area will definitely be demolished for a multi-storey building with billions of rupiah in compensation, the local area is very expensive.

On sabang Street you should continue to kebon sirih and eat the Famouse Nasi Goreng Kambing kebin sirih. the area you live called Kebon (garden) Kacang (peanut), its part of Tanah Abang (Brother Land) district. the building you see is one of oldest goverment project in Jakarta for Rusun (Rumah Susun) or Flat aroung 40 years . There is 2 Rusun ,one area one is near with thamrin street and the other is near with tanah abang market. They are the places in countries where you can truly live.
