  • GitLab is an Open Source project that encourages external contributions from its global community. Contributing to such a project requires a good understanding of GitLab's processes and effective communication with its maintainers to avoid extra review loops and slow development velocity.
In his talk, Gerardo shares his learnings and best practices for contributing to GitLab based on his experience as an external contributor. With the newly contributed feature "protected packages" as an example case study, he applies the contribution best practices in real life, including:
    • Precise communication to avoid extra review loops.
    • Proactively explain implementation decisions.
    • Reference past decisions for more context.
    • Discuss Premium vs Free tier considerations.
    • And much more ...
This presentation aims to provide a better understanding of how to contribute successfully to GitLab that can also be applied to other Open Source projects.
Gerardo is a senior software engineer with 10+ years of experience in different corporations, startups, and industries. With his Open Source mindset and tool belt, he and his team help growing organizations to scale their business, processes, and software services.
At the moment, he is contributing to GitLab on behalf of the sie.ag/4tfttE team.
