According to the behind the scenes video there are three cuts in episode 6. The rest is achieved by having the actors hide in panels built into the walls, the whole set was designed around it, plus the sets being modular, so they could wheel sections up to other sections so as not to break continuity. Film making masterclass. 3 shots, 1 episode . Wonderful. Also they apparently rehearsed episode 6 for 3 months before filming.

First of all, your descriptor as "untriggered landmine" is gorgeously apropos. Well done. I think an answer might be found in Thomas Aquinas, who said that suffering is finally the only truly serious objection to the existence of God. "If two contraries be infinite, one of them would be utterly destroyed. If one had infinite heat, there would be no cold. If God was infinitely good, there would be no evil. However there is evil, so there can be no God." Perhaps the Dudley's faith did inform them of the house's evil. Perhaps they did recognize the suffering that could be brought to others by leaving the house "undetonated". Perhaps they did realize that they were simply feeding themselves to the demon house by, in the end, going there to die. But, in spite of all of that, the PAIN of losing their daughter made them willing to do whatever, WHATEVER it took to be with her again - to see and hold and love her. Yes, they had faith. And then they lost a child, and suddenly all of that stuff just didn't matter anymore.
It is thanks to efap i discovered hill house and loved it, cant wait to rewatch it with my imaginary friends plague doctor, gas mask man, german pepe, dog and anime female with a weirdly not feminine voice
The acting in this is phenomenal. Also, as an editing major, I'm seeing so much about the editing and cinematography in this that are really inspiring. Those cuts are so damn good.
I think the whole "Who's hand was I holding?" line was purely a call back to the original Robert Wise "The Haunting" adaptation, though it's Nell who says it in the film.
Be a time traveler, mother said. There’s job security because not many people can do it, she said. Now every time I try to impart future knowledge there’s some chucklefuck that beat me to it. FIGHT ME!!!
This show has a lot going for it. It features great characters who are complex and well-developed, the time and space threads tied up well, good cuts, excellent acting (from adults to kids), palpable fear and tension, and smart shots. My favourite long shot was at the funeral home. I especially appreciated how the writers explored how different people will cope with childhood trauma. Some people will grow up to be well-functioning adults, others less so. It's all very personal. Theo is def my favourite character. Two threads I thought were especially haunting: (1) Nell's sleep paralysis...it was like she was waking up inside a dead body, with her mouth wired shut and limbs immobile, like she was being told how she would end up. (2) Joey (Luke's addict friend) having grown up in foster care. The little girl who Theo helps in 'Touch', without real help, coul this little girl one day become a drug addict like Joey? It's a terrifying possibility. I did feel let down by how the final episode unfolded. I did like that they didn't go with the cliché of 'the house was built on a native burial ground and therefore evil'. That's been done too much. However, its motviation were just too vague. I prefer to have the supernatural left mostly unexplained, however, what they did with ghosts needed more, especially the house and Nell's ghost. Is she a trapped tortured soul or can she help her living family members? It's not consistent/not well-explained. Again I prefer the mystery and don't want the writers to dump their mythos into the episode, but I argue we needed more.
I think it's consistently shown that Nell is independent of her Mother but can seemingly be controlled by her at times. Such as having Kid Nell in the ghost tea party or when the two of them hug the Father. However I think it's left intentionally vague as to if the house is a sentient force or if it's just a metaphor. I think it's a fair read to say that the House is simply an anchor for ghost and some of the ghost like the Flapper lady like torturing the living. I also think ghost don't grow or change they stay the same. They're dead after all. So while the Mom might have been a sweet nice woman she is permanently trapped at her worse, but maybe with the Dad she will be reigned in.
One thing I didn't mention that really pissed me off about the series was the kitten stuff in Episode 2. I know most people probably wouldn't know this, but Shirley did EVERYTHING wrong with the kittens. I've fostered mutiple litters of orphans, even newborns. They need (1) KMR, kitten milk replacer, NOT cow's milk (2) to be fed every 2 hours for the first two weeks of life (3) to be "pooped" this is a stimulation that encouarges them to poop and pee, something mummy would do and it keeps them clean. (4) to be kept warm, kittens that small cannot regulate their body temperature and can suffer hypothermia with a nest temperature of less than 30-32C. How she was taking care of them they would have died without an evil house to do the deed. Sorry, again most people wouldn't know her actions were wrong, however it ruined that episode for me. It would have been much better if the family was doing everything right and they still died, that would have made it FAR more tragic. Overall, the show's writing is pretty solid. They got the heroine addiction, withdrawal, etc symptoms right along with a lot of other stuff.
Let me lay down the facts: Haunting of Hill House is a lighthearted romcom Also there are literally no guns in usa These are just my opinions, leave me alone
Critical drinker basically said that about Bly Manor to TSWG when they were talking about Star Treck IV. And this was after the Bly Manor discussion he had with Mewbschlie & co where he conceded that it isn't.
@@juliandamen9804 It has romantic elements sure, but Drinkers claim was that the story was more about romance than horror which is patently false. The story wouldn't even happen if you removed the horror-aspect.
I always find it amusing when I hear a stock sound in media that I've heard from videogames in 1998-2005. Feel like I've heard some door sounds from the game Stonekeep and that's from 1995
I am so thankful to have found this EFAP, for one of my favorite series out there. Hill House is a series I revisit annually. It's like introducing a group of friends to something wonderful. This show is truly top tier and i love and fear it deeply. Even if I'm 4 years too late, Cheers!

Wow. Found out about y'all watching this & I think this is the only time I've not heard anyone talking AT ALL during the show. I've watched this multiple times - one of the best acted & well done mini series I've seen...ever. Just the best!
I heard you guys talking about this one one of the recent EFAP's, I went and watched THOHH over the Halloween festive period! Loved it, so much. It prepared me for this, now I feel like I can discus it with others!

Great job exploiting all the ambience from the EFAP crew's mics through the editing. It kept me a little on edge. About half-way through watching, my neighbor's smoke detector went off and I thought it was happening in the video for a few seconds.
Loved this format, really hoping you gonna make more stuff like this. Praise and critique good shows/films. And yeah this is helpful, none of my friends are interested in them, or gonna watch them in the future, maybe. Really hyped for Bly Manor EFAP, and hoping it gonna came out soon. Completely agree with you guys this was amazing show in every respect, with weaker ending that it deserves. Rewrites kinda explain how we got this. Again thanks for rec. I decided to watch both shows because of it, and love them
I got to the first warning and decided since you gave it such high praise I would check it out. Near 10 hours later I am watching the final episode and have still not un-paused because I just can't stop watching, this show is too good. Can't wait to see what you guys have to say on it.
I love this show and happy to see someone react to this. Gosh this show still brings out the uncomfortable feeling when it's being scary and gosh it still made me cry or tear up.
Love the format; the editing together with the commentary go a long way to support the praises (and criticisms). It was great to notice all the little things i missed on my first viewing. Reaaaaaally looking forward to the Blind Manor one. And for anyone wondering, sleep paralisys doesn’t quite feel like that.
I never really thought about it until now but, It must be horrible being the twins, it's like a feedback loop of negativity and drugs between them. At least Theo can wear gloves, they however are permanently psychically connected. Do they also suffer from guilt? like does Nel or Luke feel like they are the cause of their twins issues? With how much they love each other it would horribly exacerbate their emotional problems.
I love how Theo is introduced to us as an adult whereas we meet all the others as children, kind of showing how she's almost the most mature or all knowing of the bunch
Theo is really immature in a lot of ways, she lives in her sisters outhouse and behaves like a teenager in her relationships (I have only see 5 episodes though).
Technically we first see her as a kid but she says about a single line of dialogue in episode one before returning to her room so I dunno if you'd count that either way
I have a friend who keeps recommending this show but I never got around to watching it. Maybe this’ll be the motivating factor to finally get around to doing it
Episode 9 reminded me of Inception. Di Caprio's wife wanting to kill herself in real life in order to wake up from what she thinks is a dream world and waking up in another real world.
Haunting of hill house is one of those things that’s not a thing I personally like but I enjoyed this video so that says something about the EFAP crew. Keep up the good work and I hope you do more watches of things you enjoy as well as garbage to rip into.
Something compelled me to give this another watch (3rd time thru the series) and then u guys pop up with this gold. Recommend u check into Mike Flanagan's other works (Oculus, Ouija prequel, Hush) lotsa similar actors and cinematography, and he's def one of the best horror/thriller directors of this generation.
Just in the case of the long takes, whenever an actor passes the Frame or we pan close to something specific like a wall or a prop is normally where cuts are hidden
You Guys should watch the 2002 WB Birds of Prey series to fill time until BatWoman comes back. Same premise, batman is out and someone has to fill in for him.
I really am happy for your recommendation of this show. I watched it and I was thoroughly impressed. I mean I suffered through The Mandalorian S2 and after that watched this. I was like: "What's that? Actual characters? That are well-written, too? A bunch of people who I care about? A story that makes sense (until the finale) and has great tension and clear stakes?" Like coming out of a dirty pit I was trapped in for days and then visiting a 5-star luxurious hotel, where I can have a perfectly heated shower, amazing food and a warm, comfy bed. Simply amazing!
I watched this with my family. It was the first time in a while I was hooked. My father was complaining about how boring it was. But then again he likes the TFA and TLJ a lot so... flashing lights, I guess.
I watched this series back in April which was the perfect time to watch it. Scared the crap outta me and I loved every bit of it. Even watching this truncated version is sending chills down my arms and neck. Also probably not helping myself by watching/listening to this at 1:20am and knowing I need to get to sleep soon...
Man I watched this entire show thinking it had been the one you were praising, instead of Bly Manor, and i was fucing bewildered at the end, expecting something good, lol
Just finished it too and I was relatively fine with the ending but then I watched the Efap and all the issues got presented to me souring the entire ending. I guess we're both going to watch Bly now to compare?
Thanks for doing this ! it's a great way to experience the show again after not having watched it for a year ! I hope you'll do the same for Bly Manor because I've not experienced that for 3 weeks and I already want to rewatch it !
I didn’t expect to get hooked on this show so fast. I started making my sister watch it too cause she loves these kind of shows and the first episode got her hooked too
I loved this series and while I enjoyed the ending, I recognized there were issues with it. I'm happy they decided against everyone dying, but the ending is a bit.. too happy. That said if they were all in an eternal happy "purgatory" together, maybe it wouldn't have been so bad? The note said that they originally had that 2yr clean party for Luke in the red room, so it's interesting to think about. Also I was very confused about Theo ditching the gloves. I don't like that.
The dad revealing to Steven in episode 8 that he was seeing weird stuff but wasn't able to recognize was a cool but the deliver was too fast. Instead of telling him during an emergency that should be a discussion with arguments and counterarguments between the two with a third party that would slowly be convinced of the dad's logic even if Steven refuse to.
I would love it. Watching Buffy & Angel( finished s4, and almost s1). Nobody from my list of friends are interested in them. And the only channel who covers it, that I watch is passion of the nerd( really good stuff). I really want more content/ discussion of them
I love it when we hear that Steve was asleep for most of the night. It makes that short scary scene with Steven and the father seem trivial to what's going to come. And it is.
Man. After listening to them talk to Drinker about Bly Manor, it would be nice to get an addendum to their episode 10. Since a lot of their problems with episode 10 were things they praised in Bly. They are even set in the same universe, so we now know all the rules. Would be nice.
Different house, different rules, and it's not even confirmed if they're even in the same universe Especially since Bly Manor's weirdness isn't because of the house, but because of the ghost itself, so a whole different set of rules apply. The house in Bly Manor is just a building On the topic of episode 10, the ending of Bly isn't "and they lived happily ever after" since Dani essentially sacrifices herself so everyone would live. She doesn't get a happy ending, neither does Jamie by extension which is always waiting for her to come back decades after the fact. The issue with Hill House is that terrible things are pained as being happy like Mom Dad and Nell being happy together when Mom is the one that killed them so they stay with her, that's fucked up. And the rest of the family is basically unscathed with no further explanation where in Bly Manor we have a whole episode dedicated to seeing the characters after Bly Manor, and since the events taking place there are less traumatic than the ones that took place in Hill House (the last night is the only true trauma in Bly Manor since before that the adults didn't know something was wrong, and the kids forgot/blocked what happened, which is common for kids that age). Really, Hill House and Bly Manor's endings are two very different beasts
I've already watched Hill House and didn't really want to do the watch as the video progresses thing but I love the format nonetheless. The section before the discussion is a great way of catching up on what happened in the episode and it's super awesome to hear you guys discuss one of my favorite shows and bring up a lot I might've not even noticed. Absolutely great stuff, keep it up!
That stock squeaking sound you hear everywhere. I know it mostly because it was used in the original Resident Evil game and I heard it a LOT. Then i started noticing it in loads of movies and TV shows
Bly Manor and Hill House are so starkly different from one another. I think that the character work and the dialogue is better in HH, but Bly has slightly tighter writing as far as resolutions go.

At this rate, EFAP Minis will be 12 hours long by 2022.
I am fine with this.
Everyone agrees.
I’m from the future. You called it.
This aged quite well
Be a time traveler, mother said. There’s job security because not many people can do it, she said. Now every time I try to impart future knowledge there’s some chucklefuck that beat me to it. FIGHT ME!!!
Efap minis are now longer than mainline efaps sometimes.
Regarding the dumbwaiter: I think the house just didn't let anyone go down. Just like the house selectively let people into the red room.

@Corvo@AZ Well he's right, so I have trouble seeing him lose ;D
I don’t know what I find more unsettling... this show or EFAP being silent during something
Two threads I thought were especially haunting:
(1) Nell's sleep paralysis...it was like she was waking up inside a dead body, with her mouth wired shut and limbs immobile, like she was being told how she would end up.
Let me lay down the facts:
Haunting of Hill House is a lighthearted romcom
Also there are literally no guns in usa
These are just my opinions, leave me alone
@Adolfthejewbaka _ It's just my opinion and opinions can't be wrong, I heard it in a tismic video, leave me alone q.q
Critical drinker basically said that about Bly Manor to TSWG when they were talking about Star Treck IV.
And this was after the Bly Manor discussion he had with Mewbschlie & co where he conceded that it isn't.
@@lordofthepizzapie9319 i mean drinker is right, hill house isnt but bly manor the argument can be made for sure
@@juliandamen9804 It has romantic elements sure, but Drinkers claim was that the story was more about romance than horror which is patently false. The story wouldn't even happen if you removed the horror-aspect.
A perfect demonstration of the "just my opinion" """*ARGUMENT*"""
Rewatched this just last week, such a great show
Watched it for the third time with my mother because she was curious. She loved it, and wants to watch it again.
Are you ok there buddy? You seem a little confused xD . - Little Hope
@@marywilcox3102 Same. My parents liked it and they don't even like horror
@@jaceyyyyyyyy Same with my mother. She's not a horror fan, but like your parents, she loved this show.
This is awesome MauLer!! A fine addition to our EFAP collection, can’t wait for more like it!!
I wanna talk about Haunting of Hill House, but I have no friends!
This makes three.
Me too, you guys wanna be friends?

I'm here for you bro.
How about how Shirley touches dead people for a living and Theo only touches living people.
There's so many neat picks in Hill House.
Having friends is the big gay
Wow. Found out about y'all watching this & I think this is the only time I've not heard anyone talking AT ALL during the show.
I've watched this multiple times - one of the best acted & well done mini series I've seen...ever. Just the best!
Not even halfway through, good format Mrs Mooper, more of this please
2 hours in! This is great! GIVE ME THE BLY MANOR VIDEO!!!
I want them to cover "The Haunting of Bly Manor" soon.
Give now
@Luiz Roberto they seem to think so from what I've heard, but I haven't seen it myself
Its great, but check for yourself
I heard you guys talking about this one one of the recent EFAP's, I went and watched THOHH over the Halloween festive period! Loved it, so much. It prepared me for this, now I feel like I can discus it with others!
The most terrifying thing on screen is still Jays profile picture.
You mean Jaysette ?
@@therealfakecaptain7978 No?
@@555happydude Yes ?
@@therealfakecaptain7978 I'm confused, are you making some kind of bowsette reference?
@@555happydude Not really but you could think of it that way. I'm just using a first name that sounds more feminine than Jays since his profile picture is a bit feminine.
"Whose hand was I holding?" Is taken straight from the original Haunting of Hill House so that's why it's there. It's a homage.
Great job exploiting all the ambience from the EFAP crew's mics through the editing. It kept me a little on edge. About half-way through watching, my neighbor's smoke detector went off and I thought it was happening in the video for a few seconds.
I don't think that people are ready for Wombo yet.
We're all still recovering from the Spuart incident.
I decided to watch both shows because of it, and love them
I don't want to think about Netflix and child actors...
Im 5 minutes in and ive never seen you guys so invested and quiet since the Luke Fox plot sniper scene.
Even from the chopped up footage, this show looks really great. I'm definitely gonna check it out.
I got to the first warning and decided since you gave it such high praise I would check it out. Near 10 hours later I am watching the final episode and have still not un-paused because I just can't stop watching, this show is too good. Can't wait to see what you guys have to say on it.
Got to agree with Mauler. Theo speech on Episode 8 is so chilling and put death in a whole new level of a scary perspective.
Now is the time to look back at the 'ah, a 4 hour mini' jokes from a year ago.
I love this show and happy to see someone react to this.
Gosh this show still brings out the uncomfortable feeling when it's being scary and gosh it still made me cry or tear up.
The child predator part always gives me horrified feelings and nightmares
Man, this is everything I wanted and more. Thank you
Love the format; the editing together with the commentary go a long way to support the praises (and criticisms).
Teenagers look at her as mature because they also aren't mature and think everything edgy is adult

PLEASE, please do something like this with DARK. I love this format so much!
It’s just now hitting me how frequently the parents blame Theo when things happen to the other kids in the house.
MauLer tried to gaslight us into liking it until the final episode so we feel the pain that he felt at the end.
You Guys should watch the 2002 WB Birds of Prey series to fill time until BatWoman comes back.
Same premise, batman is out and someone has to fill in for him.
Tbh though, that show isn’t even funny-bad, it’s just bad lol
Yes, they could blow up 5 planets... but did they kinda forget about the Iron Fleet? 🤔
Somehow, the Iron Fleet returned and blew up 5 planets.
I've binge watched all episodes with guys, love your format. Thanks.
I was super expecting a "What'd ya bring me?" Meme at the end there lol. Loved this, really made me appreciate the show in ways I couldn't articulate.
Gotta love how this EFAP Mini is as long as the first EFAP.
I'm surprised you didn't do Darkness Falls. Guess that'll have to be for next year.
I sent once a superchat asking Mauler about Darkness Falls and if it holds up. I lost track of when he answered it, but it's a good suggestion.
Is it more toward good or bad? 8% or something on RT
@@onnixcarmichele3911 I've seen, i thought it was kinda garbage, however the opening is great
That was great ! More please! - seriously though, I would miss out on this show and good writing if efap didn't highlight them. I love this format.
This is the quietest video I've ever heard from you guys
I watched this with my family. It was the first time in a while I was hooked. My father was complaining about how boring it was. But then again he likes the TFA and TLJ a lot so... flashing lights, I guess.
I watched this series back in April which was the perfect time to watch it. Scared the crap outta me and I loved every bit of it. Even watching this truncated version is sending chills down my arms and neck. Also probably not helping myself by watching/listening to this at 1:20am and knowing I need to get to sleep soon...
I just finished watching this yesterday and I was shocked at how much I enjoyed it. This show was spectacular.
@@jojo_n_dat7325 yeah watching it now
Also, when I saw bowler hat guy with the cane I said, oh, there's Mauler, the longman.
Thanks for doing this !
it's a great way to experience the show again after not having watched it for a year !
I hope you'll do the same for Bly Manor because I've not experienced that for 3 weeks and I already want to rewatch it !
"Mini series" c'mon now LOL
the entire ‘mini series’ is contained within the four and a half hours tho, so it works
I didn’t expect to get hooked on this show so fast. I started making my sister watch it too cause she loves these kind of shows and the first episode got her hooked too
Yes, more of this, great perspectives and I also hope either of you do a full rewrite for Ep 10
Cause she longer feels troubled by the fact that she can connect with others she doesn't feel closed off.
I want to thank you guys for introducing me to this awesome series. I just watched the first episode and I was instantly hooked
As I suspected, yall truly appreciated the genius of episode 6.
Haunting of Millhouse, anybody? Everything's coming up Hill House!
This format is neat. You should do it with other shows like Buffy.
Different house, different rules, and it's not even confirmed if they're even in the same universe
Especially since Bly Manor's weirdness isn't because of the house, but because of the ghost itself, so a whole different set of rules apply.
The house in Bly Manor is just a building
On the topic of episode 10, the ending of Bly isn't "and they lived happily ever after" since Dani essentially sacrifices herself so everyone would live.
Really, Hill House and Bly Manor's endings are two very different beasts
this was really good, longman
Hill House, episode 10:
*"What'd ya bring me?"*
This was such an excellent series!
I know it hasn’t been long but I’ve missed you guys
I've already watched Hill House and didn't really want to do the watch as the video progresses thing but I love the format nonetheless. The section before the discussion is a great way of catching up on what happened in the episode and it's super awesome to hear you guys discuss one of my favorite shows and bring up a lot I might've not even noticed. Absolutely great stuff, keep it up!
This format seems like a lot of work, but thank you for the delicious content
Nell's death scene/final revelation is still terrifying and traumatizing...
Every time they mention detective wumbo, I wait for them to remember Columbo.
That stock squeaking sound you hear everywhere. I know it mostly because it was used in the original Resident Evil game and I heard it a LOT. Then i started noticing it in loads of movies and TV shows
So an EFAP mini or 1917. I’d love to see how immersed they get and how many times they’ll try to “catch” a cut.
This show is GOATed. I can’t wait to see what Bly Manor has in store (and the EFAP to come on it)
Don't go in with high horror expectations. It's more romance-horror and sequenced in a different format.
Bly Manor and Hill House are so starkly different from one another. I think that the character work and the dialogue is better in HH, but Bly has slightly tighter writing as far as resolutions go.
