Crater Lake (Klamath: giiwas) is a crater lake in south-central Oregon in the western United States. It is the main feature of Crater Lake National Park and is famous for its deep blue color and water clarity. The lake partly fills a nearly 2,148-foot (655 m)-deep caldera that was formed around 7,700 (± 150) years ago by the collapse of the volcano Mount Mazama. There are no rivers flowing into or out of the lake; the evaporation is compensated for by rain and snowfall at a rate such that the total amount of water is replaced every 250 years. With a depth of 1,949 feet (594 m), the lake is the deepest in the United States. In the world, it ranks ninth for maximum depth, and third for mean (average) depth.
Crater Lake features two small islands. Wizard Island, located near the western shore of the lake, is a cinder cone approximately 316 acres (128 ha) in size. Phantom Ship, a natural rock pillar, is located near the southern shore.
Since 2002, one of the state's regular-issue license plate designs has featured Crater Lake and a one-time plate surcharge is used to support the operation of Crater Lake National Park. The commemorative Oregon State Quarter, which was released by the United States Mint in 2005, features an image of Crater Lake on its reverse.
The lake and surrounding park areas offer many recreational activities including hiking, biking, snowshoeing, fishing, and cross-country skiing are available, and during the summer, campgrounds and lodges at Crater Lake are open to visitors.

@@TheFlyingDutchMan8K I've visited maybe a total of 4 times in my youth. Grew up in Eugene Oregon. Most of the trips were in my early teens and with relatives who's idea of sight seeing/vacationing is to be in a cramped car for several hours, get out and look for 5 minutes, then head home. So the most and only memorable trip was the final one in my 20s-a snowmobile tour in the middle of winter. Highly recommend it.

I've been fortunate enough to go to crater lake several times! Hiked down and took the boat ride to wizard island with my husband and 2 small boys. we had to pack them out we were pretty sure it was going to do us in. time well spent memories that will never go away! awesome video it shows some of the amazing beauty of my home state

I've been to Banff/Jasper and that was amazing. I had planned but cancelled a trip this year to Glacier/Tetons/Yellowstone but will probably go next year. So is Crater Lake worth doing and if so anything else to combine it with. I have to fly from Hawaii so I usually take longer vacations and combine several parks since it's expensive and I hate that long flight. Any opinions?
Waterton lakes is a great option ! Crater lake is great !! also visit Silver Falls state park or Smith rock state park thx

We combined Crater Lake with the Washington parks--Mt. Rainier, North Cascades, and Olympic--a few years ago. I highly recommend all 4. It was one of our all-time best trips and we've been to all 50 states and over 35 countries.
@@jonathantitus2629 Wow you get around! I have been to Olympic twice. Once in April or May. Pretty cold (remember I'm from Hawaii lol) but it was so beautiful. I sat on Ruby beach and watched the sun set. Same Pacific ocean but such a different feel vs my home state. If you ever venture back we loved the Cabins at Beaver Creek...just outside of Forks.
Thank you very much for your suggestions as well! I'm still planning a return trip to Banff and then the trip I cancelled but Crater lake was one of those places we have always been interested in but not sure about but if it can be combined its definitely worth a trip.
We hope to return to Crater in the future and combine it with Redwoods and Lassen, so you might consider that. Thanks for the recommendation. We bought gas in Forks on our way to the Hoh Rain Forest section and we too enjoyed Ruby Beach!. BTW we loved your state too--we flew into Honolulu and spent 3 days on Waikiki before the NCL Pride of America 7 day cruise. Hope to return and see more some day.
