Flash Flood in Nevada Desert!! Scary Driving Through Flooded Roads & Monsoon Rains - USA Travel

  • Flash flood and monsoon rain encountered driving to Palm Springs California from Las Vegas September (2012) on one of our "back road trick routes". We ran smack into a monster storm. Pounding rain, rocks and debris washing onto the road. Had to drive through fast flowing rivers streaming across in front of us. About 20 of us formed a caravan of vehicles led by a California Highways worker. He asked us to go last because we were driving a large extended GMC Yukon SUV. I was amazed the small car in front of us didn't get washed away at times! Fortunately, we all made it out safely. Crazy afternoon! ~Kenneth King Bear

    It's never a good idea to drive through flooded roads like that. Doesn't matter if you're driving a full size SUV or not. Ever heard the phrase "turn around don't drown?"

      Typical Californian drivers, drive head on into any road or weather related hazard.

    “Glad we’re in a full size SUV” when the Altima in front of you has no issues.

    Wow, pretty wild! That Altima in front of you was extremely lucky.

      For sure he was super lucky! We were being led outta there by a Cal Highways Truck, He put me at the end...in my big Yukon XL...just in case we had to rescue some of the smaller vehicles ahead of us. Talk about a long and wild ride! We were in it over an hour! Thanks. ~Kenneth

    This is a great example of what you should not do in a flash flood. Particularly the car in front of them. That was very close to the amount of water needed to push a car like that off the road, and only about 6 inches more could have pushed your SUV off. Flash floods kill more people in the US than tornadoes, lightning, and hurricanes. They don't kill people who intentionally drive their cars off bridges, they kill people who do what YOU did in this video..and were sure they'd be just fine.

    Nevada weather: *Literally on fire (The smell of burning sage brush, headaches, & red eyes).
    *Hot, dry, wobbly, & fainty. (Swamp coolers, sprinklers, & bikinis).
    *Warm outdoor shower. (Bring the shampoo).
    *Filthy flood of filth. (Bring the jet skiis).
    *Hail the size of dice. (Oddly enough, on warm days).
    *Orange sky, white snow, brown slush.

    Hey Tony! We were in a big GMC Yukon XL...4x4. That's why they put us at the back of the caravan comin' out....they figured I might be able to save the people in front of us if they got stranded. I don't know though...it was a freaky ride. Take care. ~Kenneth

    I live in Arizona and we get really bad flash flooding during the monsoon.. But it isn't very wise to drive thru it cause that can be very dangerous.

    That was nothing a foot of water those small washes. I have crossed rivers that were 4 feet deep out 4 wheeling. Even got washed down river a few times just keep the gas on and my tires hit rocks and start pulling. My jeep is lifted and has a snorkel. With cars you always have the risk of sucking water into the intake and bending a few rods in the motor. Do a youtube search on 4 wheeling river crossing.

    it IS very hot in this area! I think that day it started at about 45 Celsius (113 Fahrenheit) but then what happens is...these "cold fronts" come through...resulting in massive rain, winds, thunder and lightning! Then...after the front passes....it clears right up again and goes back to screechin' hot! It comes on suddenly...and that's why they call them "flash" floods. Very scary! ~K

    I've been through something like this. But it wasn't in the desert or anything, it was in a small town in Georgia but nothing like going through a river!

    Hi William! Not so much me....as I had the big clearance in my Yukon XL. Engine was up higher than the flow. I was amazed at the little Nissan in front of me though. I mean..it really was getting deep in some spots. We all managed to get through though. ~Kenneth

    Actually...once you get over bein freaked a bit by the pounding rain and driving through rivers goin' across the road....you DO start thinkin of that. You see the vast quantity of water and you realize how important these monsoons are to the desert! ~Kenneth

  • @DesertKingTravel

    Ya for sure! The California Hwy Dept guy that was leading us out made me go last (in my huge EXT Yukon) "in case the Nissan gets into trouble". Man...that little Nissan handled it amazingly. Mind you...hahaha...afterwards the Nissan driver said he was "just too scared to stop". I thought that car did an incredible job! ~Kenneth

    It may rain only once or twice a year in these arid areas but when it does WATCH OUT! It can even be totally dry where you are and flood a low lying area quickly. Take weather alerts seriously. Don't travel in bad weather if you don't have to.

    Well....I'm pretty sure we have some "audio reactions" ....you know...."HOLY SH*T"...type of thing. Other than that....for me it was full on concentrate on driving...and I let my wife shoot video. We were just all happy to get out of there before the road became totally impassable! ~Kenneth

    I had to drive through water like that once not as deep but it went on for about 500m. The only reason I didn't turn back was a road worker standing in the middle waving cars through.

    Reminds me when I had to drive home through a snowstorm after a theatrical rehearsal during my college days. However, you, sir, are a braver man than I for doing that. I got caught in a small dust storm out there last year and nearly pissed myself when someone passed me doing 70 mph!

    This seems like a poor job on the drainage ditch to me.... This seems the time to make a ditch alongside the road for better drainage.

    • @DesertKingTravel
      @DesertKingTravel  10 років тому

      Ya TSide...there really aren't what you'd call drainage ditches here. I think the resources required to construct proper drainage out in the desert would be too exhaustive. So much vast area...so little rain most of the year....they just have to "let it fly" when the monsoon rains hit. Makes for one heck of an adventure though I can tell ya! Take care and thanks. ~KJ

    • @TSideWes805
      @TSideWes805 10 років тому

      I know for sure that the I-15 from L.A. to Las Vegas has some of those man-made "Arroyos", or ditches. If you look from google maps, you can see the V-shape arroyos that is designed specifically for "rare" flash floods. I guess its because its a high traffic route and the state can't risk having closure on it :/

    • @DesertKingTravel
      @DesertKingTravel  10 років тому

      ***** Ya you are totally right there TSide...the road we went on is very seldom used....so for sure they couldn't justify the expense of "Arroyos". I-15?....For sure!! You got it bang on! Take care! ~KJ
