When I lived in Louisiana, I used 3 and 5 frame nucs for swarm traps. Then when I brought them to the yard, I would just add a 5 frame nuc on top. After these were full and thriving, I would transfer to a 10 frame box setup. Putting a full frame of brood in a 3 frame nuc box and feeding heavily would quickly become a strong hive.
Great content, looking forward to seeing how you like to split with queen cells. It always helps to see how others have their hives setup and run there operation.
@@Lazybfarmsllc if I can keep them atleast a box width apart, I prefer to run them in one direction so I can work the boxes from the back. They don’t particularly care for me standing in front of their entrance as I tear their home apart;) If I’m really squeezing boxes in with only inches between, then I’ll alternate the entrance. The colored entrance dials really help with orientation and let’s me get by with running them so close.
GREAT Video my friend! This video is just filled with information . Thanks again for a day of learning at your apiary! Your son does an amazing job with the videos give him a high five from us! Made up about 50 frames of the Premier today and will begin introducing it tomorrow.
Thanks for watching Hope! We enjoyed having you out for some hands on learning! You’re gonna love that Premiere Foundation!! Just went thru a bunch of hives today and blown away with how well it does. Keep us in the loop:)
Good video...one trick on nectar bound cells. I dont put in drawn comb frames as they will continue to fill cells with nectar. I put a frame of heavy waxed foundation right next to the brood wall. Ive found this technique tricks them into revealing they have room and wont swarm....it works very well.
I have been watching some of your videos and I enjoy them. Thanks for sharing. I am wondering are you the Greg that Brian at Castle hives buys his queen bees form? My name is Larry and I am a backyard bee keeper.
Thanks for watching! Yep, I’m that Greg. Brian’s great, visits the farm a lot. Here’s a video of his from a visit at The Learning Yard: ua-cam.com/video/RcsGYM7lVrA/v-deo.html
Tough times out here in California trying to get queens mated has been a struggle and very very frustrating. Has lots of Nuc orders to fill. Just been very hard.
Great content. Question, how far away do you move your splits away from where they were. I’ve been told I need to move my splits a few miles away or the forager bees will go back to the old location.
You mentioned the color of the drones a couple times. Is that significant to qualify or race of the drone. Also do raccoons tear into your bucket feeders.
What I keep seeing is that the darker bees are doing better here. I cant really explain my infatuation with dark color bees but im just drawn to them and love seeing the contrast. Once we started incorporating New Worls Carni and Caucasian genetics, are bees just got way darker. I love it. Every now again coons can knock a bucker or 2 off but it really not a big deal for us.

@@wadebarnes6720 wow!! Way to go! Our Queens are local pickup only for the rest of this year. We’re a small family apiary and the shipping loss got too high with current events. We can get you on the 2022 or 2023 list for sure.
Hey JP! I haven’t had one that I’ve had to clip. Honestly if I had a real flighty queen, I’m not sure I’d want to keep perpetuating those genetics. You ever had to clip?
@@NaturesImageFarmGregBurns Hi Greg - I tried clipping all of my queens ( 6-8 queens ) just in case this year and it prevented 1 queen from getting away. All the others never tried leaving so I guess I managed them better lol. I wasn't sure if it would make a difference or not so I gave it a try, I couldn't tell either way.

I wonder why Bob re-Queens every year? The Queen’s best year is her second I believe……I’m totally new to this, so not criticizing, just trying to learn why?
Good. Very clear and well spoken English.
Great informative video, thanks so much. Beautiful part of the countryside you are in. Have a good Spring!

I wanted to ask, is there any particular reason you have your nucs pointed in the same direction and not alternating?

Nice job Greg.
Thanks Al! How’s the bees in your neck of the woods?
She was on the third frame. You can see her starting around 7:55 about 2 inches up from the drone.
Bob is great . Thanks for your video’s
Really enjoy working with Bob. He’s a one of a kind. Thanks for watching!

Super HOT temps and earthquakes today. Don’t mind the quakes, just need to make bigger vent holes in my boxes!

My girls are working the Premier also, great foundation.
Great example of always staying open minded. I was opposed to plastic for so long…it’s been a real game changer. I can easily cut cells from it too.

What do dark drones indicate? I sometimes find them too.
While color isn’t necessarily an indicator of genetics, I have a preference for darker bees often associated with Carniolan and Caucasian genetics.
