I feel like it's just a losing battle to try to keep the body underneath the clothes, way easier to make the body a separate mesh you can remove when clothes are put on

I got a question: what if I wanted to create a player character for a game that allows different combinations of different clothing items the player can find an choose to wear? would I have to go for the more tedious version?
or maybe I can do something like each clothing item IS its own part of the body, so basically make a base model for head, torso and legs so that I can put cloths onto it and THEN delete the part of the base model that is not showing, so instead of just changing cloths in game, you're literally changing the entire part of the character that the cloths are assigned to.
I think thats a good idea but idk if there would be any problems.
but does this mean I'd STILL have to change a bunch of weight paint?....

Well I've had some clients where they have a base mesh and then each part is separated and then they just create each part on top and delete the base mesh/merge it into the clothing they do like my way.
Another tip is clean up your weight paints on your base mesh, then if you duplicate your base mesh and build your clothing off of which can help improve all of them when you create them.

I'm just wondering, why would you have a second mesh under the clothes, especially in a very low poly model.
Maybe there is a very valid reason, but to me it would make more sense to have the body mesh invisible until it needs to be shown.
For example, visible damage system, or dress-up mechanic.

It depends on what someone wants, some people may create multiple different clothing setups and then change them throughout their game and need to keep the same body mesh, thats why I offered the alternative of deleting the parts underneath and merging later on in the video.
