The best way that I have found to get better mpg was after I installed a K&N cold air intake, a Flowmaster Flow FX dual exhaust, and an Overland Tailor Tune. My 23 TRD Off Road now has more horsepower, torque and mpg. I was getting 18mpg combined mpg and 21mpg on the highway with the cruise set on 75mpg. I’m now getting 20mpg combined and 24mpg on the highway.
I’ve yet to use my ECT wasn’t for sure exactly what it was for since I am new to Tacoma’s. I think I’ll try it the next time I drive the truck. Glad the cop didn’t get ya
I own 2020 SR5. I looked all over the manual couldn’t find what ECT button did and gave up. Thanks for doing this video. I routinely get 18.5 city combo driving. Goosing then v6 for acceleration seems to kill MPG. I use E15 gas when I can find it and occasionally add 100%. My best is 21.5 on a long trip with 100 gas. Tonneau cover helps too I believe. I also have bigger wheels and tires but not lifted.
I just a 2000 mile trip in the mountains of Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. Towing 2000 lbs, 15 mpg. Without the trailer I get 19, same highways. Stock size tires, TRD Offroad, 6 ply ATs Mazma tires 3 peak rated. The lift does not matter until you are at highway speeds. What does matter, tire width, height, and weight. 10 ply, E rated a significantly heavier.
I did the K&N, Air Aid spacer, coil pack from supercharger... The power is REAL MY FREINDS. Mileage improved just a a couple MPG but I can't keep my foot out of it enough to really do a tank test 😂

So for anyone wondering as far as I understand ECT mode is kind of like trailer mode or haul mode so it changes your shift points and with the truck being a little underpowered in its normal gearing the shorter shif points will give it better gas mileage
I have a Tacoma sr5 and I run mine in ETC S and I shift all the gears my self and I average 22 mpg highway and 19mpg city but I don’t have big ole tires on there I just hts grippers all terrain I would say if you try to shift it yourself instead of letting it search for the gear then you’ll get better mpg give that a try ! Stay safe man !
Yep when I'm on road trips and i set the cruise control at 70 it will also sit at that high RPM and not shift, it annoys me. But sometimes i put it at like 73 to make sure it shifts 😂
Rick! Lol 😂 I know you from the DJ stuff. I just traded my 2020 4Runner for a 2023 Tacoma SR5 crew with 5’ bed. So I’ve been looking at vids/mods/etc…. Take care 😊
You should really consider getting an Overland tune check out some videos. I have yet to find one video knocking this tune. I am going to be getting it myself on my 2023.
Should use the exact same gas pump also. Lower pressure on pump could put in more petrol. Also wonder if the Pedal Commander would play into a better fuel mileage.
I have a stock 21 Tacoma TRD Off-Road. I’ve been running ECT for an entire tank and seemed to have gotten worse mileage. I really don’t see how it would be better since it’s in a higher RPM range most of the time.
If you are leaving it in s6, it is no different than in drive. In the s mode you can manually shift through the gears or you can lock out some of your top gears. The reason it shows different mpg is because there are way to many variables to get accurate readings in such short distances.
It's hunting for gears because of the axle gear ratio and the larger tires. The Tacoma with the 3.5L has 3.91 axle gearing. If you go with larger tires, you may want to consider regearing to 4.88 gears and that will eliminate the "hunting" for the right gear on the highway.
YES I know I confused ECT as ETC multiple times. It's hard to remember the order of the letters. LOL. Let me know what you guys are doing to get the best mpg!
Taco Rick I wanted to ask as I’m looking at buying the same Tacoma as you. Why didn’t you go with the manual transmission? That’s what I was looking at so was wanting to know your thoughts. Keep up the great work
HI Rick, at 7:27 when you had that problem with the shifting, it may be due to your gears unable to handle the additional weight of your tires. I have seen a lot of other videos and when you get tires bigger then 31s you are going to need to re-gear your Tacoma, which no lie will be expensive (unless you do it yourself) that should set your transmission back to shifting after 2000 rpms like it usually does and give you back a good highway drive. Not to mention its should give you more low end torque for off-roading.
Great video! Thank you. For estimation purposes only, if you multiple the distance, gallons and total cost X 10, the cost difference traveling 200miles and spending $23.8 to $25.0 isn't much difference. Per tank, it's only couple bucks or so difference.
Best mpg is listed on you window sticker. Stock is rock. Avoid air intake gimicks, throttle gimmicks, ect. Lift kits, big tires are mpg killers. Elect. Control trans button is tow/haul mode. 5th and 6th are overdrive gears. Only avail. on flat hwy without headwinds. Just fill it up when empty. Don't be obsessed with mpg.
Hey Taco Rick! My name is Tony and I just came across your channel earlier this week! I enjoy your videos so far and what you’ve done to your Tacoma 😎. I just recently bought a new 2020 Tacoma off road. Not the limited though. So two questions for you. First off can I still start my truck with the key fob to warm or cool it off before I get in? Second question when I look at the gator cover for my truck bed on Amazon it says it doesn’t fit the 2020 Tacoma? Does it for sure fit?
It will always get worse gas mileage with the ECT on because it changes the shift pattern to a more aggressive shift pattern keeping it a higher RPM. I have a shift controller in my truck which makes it even worse gas mileage.
Hey just found your channel and it’s very awesome! Have a question tho. Looking to get a Tacoma but don’t know which to get. I love to ski and go to mountains but it’s a seasonal thing. I live in the desert (Vegas) we’re it gets 110 all the time. So not sure what to get. Trd sport or off-road
I did a 120 mile round trip, mostly flat, going 90 mpg I got 11.6 mpg, on our way back doing 80 mpg it was 12.4 mpg. Both disappointing, not traffic and with cruise control.
Umm do I not understand how the Tacoma works? Or what? But isn’t the “sport mode” meant to be a sort of manual form of shifting gears? My mans really went all the way to 6th gear but the truck was still driving in automatic Im so confused
The sport mode is just a different form of auto. It widens the shift points. It does allow you to shift manually to some degree but the truck will shift if you don't so it doesn't break.
I just installed 285 75 16 toyo at3's with no lift on my 2020 trd pro. I went into my gps and used the recalibration for changing tire size. It said it was recalibrating but speedo is still 1-2mph slower than actual speed. Looks like I lost approximately 2mpg on the computer. But did I. Worth the look.

I wouldn't own the auto, when I first tested a tacoma I knew instantly I was buying a manual.. if you put it in so it should be in 6th unless its just not possible, it shouldn't think its smarter than the driver.
Manual is the way to go especially with a lift and bigger tires. It doesn't affect the mpg as much as the auto. Must be from gear ratio Auto 3:90 Manual 4:30 if I'm not mistaken?
Did you have your computer recalibrated after you did went with the larger tires & wheels? If so your on board fuel economy calculator will give you an accurate estimate on your fuel mileage and the ect is ment for towing trailers not to improve your mpg
So the 14-15 mpg you’ve been getting on your 100 mile round trip commute is what the truck says? Or is it the true mileage calculated manually with the larger tires?
Wheels - 1500ish Tires -1200ish Ring and pinion regearing average 3k-ish Give or take a few hundred depending on regearing kit and shop labor. It would be about half or even less than what you suggested
I have a 2016 tacoma trd off road. I have 285/75/16 thunderer ranger a/t-r no lift no trimming no rubbing. I average 18 mpg in RI. But I pull a trailer alot. I now average 17.5 since I went from stock to the 285s. Instagram is Josephp1986 if you want to see tires. But the best way to improve mileage is re-gearing I hear.

On 265/75/16 MT I got 19.3 to 19.7
And On a 2.5 lift
With 285/75/16 KO2s I get 18.7 to 19.2
I have 2019 trdpro mt btw
Was your speedometer off on your truck? How did you fix and My is 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD with 2.5 lift and 1.25 rear on 285/75/16 toyo
AT3
@@michaelfloyd1302 my speedometer is off by -3 mph. 88 rotors did my my lift on my trdpro tacoma
BDevi0us ok about same here. I may need get programmer from rough country then to fix.
BDevi0us my gas was At 20.1 mpg this morning yesterday was 13 mpg
I wouldnt worry about it. Most people don't mess with the speedo unless they go 35s.
Must be from gear ratio
Auto 3:90
Manual 4:30 if I'm not mistaken?
@@BDevi0us yes 4 30, not sure if it makes a difference bc trans is different. Its definitely geared to low, especially in reverse
Did you have your computer recalibrated after you did went with the larger tires & wheels? If so your on board fuel economy calculator will give you an accurate estimate on your fuel mileage and the ect is ment for towing trailers not to improve your mpg
Recalibrate your speedometer if you change tire size. Its easy enough and a great feature for the tacoma.
So the 14-15 mpg you’ve been getting on your 100 mile round trip commute is what the truck says? Or is it the true mileage calculated manually with the larger tires?
Never calculated it. 14 to 15 is what it says. And guessing on these calculations thats around 16 to 18 actual.
Bigger tires = Regearing so be prepared to spend that extra 15-20k on your customization easy!
15-20k on regearing explain that?
Find a different shop. That's way over.
Wheels - 1500ish
Tires -1200ish
Ring and pinion regearing average 3k-ish
Give or take a few hundred depending on regearing kit and shop labor. It would be about half or even less than what you suggested
Don’t buy a truck for mpg , simple answer . Lmao
Yep
I have a 2016 tacoma trd off road. I have 285/75/16 thunderer ranger a/t-r no lift no trimming no rubbing. I average 18 mpg in RI. But I pull a trailer alot. I now average 17.5 since I went from stock to the 285s. Instagram is Josephp1986 if you want to see tires. But the best way to improve mileage is re-gearing I hear.
People with short coming feel a need to lift there trucks
Best way is not to drive it at all and ride a Bike!
Lol true that 🤣
The best way to save money is get a manual six speed Tacoma. You be in control not that shitty automatic.
