Randy Orton's push in 2004 fizzled out. He was still a top guy but lacked that little push. The Undertaker helped him get to the next level. Orton's feud with The Undertaker elevated him to heights like never before and if he never screwed up before WM 22, he would've won the title. What did you think of this feud?

This feud is an absolute classic that helped both Orton and Taker in a huge way. For Orton, he reestablished himself as one of WWE's top heels at the time while getting more credibility as an top guy and main eventer while for Taker, after an lackluster year 2004, he went on amazing run full of big matches thanks to this feud. With classic matches, segments and amazing storytelling, this feud was excellent.

They hotshotted Randy into the top babyface role because he was stealing Triple H’s thunder. Triple H was supposed to be the top heel, but Randy was slowly being accepted by the fans as the biggest star of Evolution. It got to the point where they were cheering him against Edge and Benoit, all as a result of the Foley feud, his cool factor and his ability to put on amazing matches on a weekly basis.
The problem was that Triple H still wanted that top heel role, and Vince didn’t want to take it from him. There was still the Batista feud to come, so it was obvious that there was no room at the top for Randy to be the heel champion in Vince’s eyes.
Unfortunately, they threw Randy into the deep end in a shark infested pool. Randy wasn’t ready to be a face and the fans didn’t like his character change one bit. The guy went from insulting the fans and being an arrogant ass, to high fiving the fans and sucking up to the other faces. It didn’t suit Randy’s personality at all, and the fans saw right through that.
But even worse, they made sure Triple H always came out on top in the end. Outside of the title loss at Unforgiven, they would constantly put Randy in a weakened state. For example, he beats Flair at Taboo Tuesday 2004, only for Flair to beat him on the next RAW and prevent him from challenging for the title while Triple H is champion. 50-50 booking for your top face is a terrible idea. The only significant win Randy had was at Survivor Series for his team to control RAW for a month, and that ended up becoming a waste because Triple H ended up with another title reign without having lost it to anybody else.
And to top it all off, they had Triple H come out prior to WrestleMania and claim that Randy was grovelling for the scraps of WrestleMania by challenging Undertaker. He not only buried Randy, but he put himself over Undertaker as well. Absolutely pathetic.

Orton joining Evolution was probably the most important thing that happened in his career. His feud with Foley was equally important because it put Orton on the map as an individual separate from HHH's coattails and a guy to be taken seriously. This feud with Taker was also critical because it kept him afloat at a tough time in his career where Batista and Cena were passing him by. It kept him doing something compelling and important on TV every week, which he needed.. and he went back to being a heel, which was always going to be his natural role and the thing he was best at.
