What is an exit poll?

The exit poll for the UK General Election comes out at around 10pm - but what does this poll actually mean?
The exit poll runs throughout the day at around 144 polling stations across the country.
Tens of thousands of people are asked to privately fill in a replica ballot as they leave their polling stations - to get an idea of how they voted.
