- Welcome to the Soole Garage! This is episode #3 on my 70 Chevelle restoration. In this video I explain and show how I repair frame damage. I hope you enjoy and thanks for watching! Don't forget to subscribe to make sure you don't miss the next episode!
I hopefully be getting a neighbors 454 chevelle(I believe it’s a 70, non ss) that has a bent frame rail from a front end in the late 80’s which is missing its front clip, thanks for the information! You earned yourself a subscriber
Thanks and good luck.....
I’m starting a ‘72 this winter...loving it..🇺🇸
Great video on welding a chevelle frame, thank you for sharing!!!
I had to do the exact same thing, same area. Great work '''' Cant wait to see more progress.
Nice Job. Nice welding. Pretty awesome project.
That’s a pretty impressive weld, I’ll definitely be subscribing!
Thanks I appreciate your feedback
When you repaired the body mount rust issue on the frame with the washer, whats the best way to make sure you have the new drilled hole centered in the right spot? Did you just take measurements off the opposite body mount hole?
that is exactly it, measurements from the drivers side for accuracy.
Also, you do want an accurate body mount location but there is a little wiggle room when installing the mounts and bolts.
Is using the saw to open up the gap where the crack is an absolute must for a proper weld repair ? I'm asking cause my 72 chevelle has a crack on the passenger side that is around the spring pocket and goes up the inside along the cross member.
Not an absolute must you will just end up with a larger bead welding over the top of the crack opening it up, allows better penetration into the metal. Your choice really.
Hi again. I have the same issue with a rusted out body mount that you repaired in this episode. It appears that a washer from a body mount will fit nicely when cut out and welded in. How did you enlarge the joke in the washer to the proper size- a hole saw? And how did you locate the washer in the exact spot centered in the rusty hole in the frame? I’ve been thinking of using a proper size hole saw and the pilot bit could be used to center the bug washer- then mark/trace around the washer onto the frame and cut with a die grinder. Weld in the washer then drill the hole to proper size with the hole saw. How did you do it? Thoughts? Thanks
I have an Aircat pneumatic die grinder with a carbide bit I was able to cut the proper size hole after I welded the washer in place. I took a lot of measurements and made a cardboard pattern of the drivers side so I could get the body mount located correctly.
Mine was cracked in the exact same spot must be a common problem
Hi. I saw your Eastwood SCT brush sander in episode 2 for rust removal on the frame. Could this be used to strip paint from the body instead of media blasting or chemical stripping? If so, what grit brush would be needed?
I have used the SCT tool for paint stripping, It works pretty well. I have a 80 grit drum that I have used. it does fill the room with dust but works pretty fast. I also have a 60 grit drum, but I prefer the 80 its less aggressive and doesn't heat up the metal.
Hey,
Was that a washer used to replace the metal in the bushing area(body mount)?
yes I used it because it was a heavier gauge that the frame material.
@@soolegarage nice, do you remember the size
pretty sure it was a 2" washer. Frame material is approx 10 Ga. so find one that matches that or thicker. I think mine was 3/16 thick.
@@soolegarage awesome, will do… thanks for the info
Don't weld like this guy .
