    Clutch start cancel is only available on 4WD models. It’s for off-road use in case you stall while climbing in terrain.

    My grandfather has a 2006 Tacoma, the SR5 extended cab model with the 4 cylinder, 2wd, and the automatic. He has had it for probably over 10 years at this point, and I can't think of a time when he's told me it was in the shop for something serious. He's a mechanic so he does most stuff on it himself, and I can't ever think of a time when I've seen the hood up, except when he's checking the oil. Same for my grandma's 2006 Saturn Vue with the Honda V6. Plus, he drives 100-200 miles all though Detroit, every day, for work, and it never lets him down. He did have the frame replaced a few years ago, and it was out for probably 4 or 5 months. He had a Silverado loaner (I think a 2019) and he said it was such junk that he requested a new loaner half way through. He got switched to an F-150, and said it was a night and day difference. This would make his 4th Toyota, after a 97 Tacoma, 87 SR5 (which I was told is still on the road in northern MI with upwards of 500k miles on it), and a 90 SR5. He loves those Toyotas, and I can see why. I think his probably has 260k miles or higher on it at this point. I can attest to the ride quality though, it's terrible, especially on our Michigan roads with all kinds of potholes. His has a much nicer center console, a full length one at that, which is probably because it's an automatic and that it is the SR5. It has very nice full bucket seats, as well as 2 FORWARD facing foldable rear seats, unlike the American small trucks with the sideways jump seats. They are tiny, but much more usable than the sideways jump seats. I also LOVE the startup sound of the 2.7, it sounds so raspy.
    I will give Toyota serious credit for pouring money into decade old trucks for the frames. I'm not a Toyota fan, and I much prefer domestic trucks and cars, but that is not something that most companies are willing to do. It shows their understanding for quality vehicles.

    Also beware if you’re looking at the 03 to 09 4Runners and gx470s, they were not included in the frame recall but also had severe frame rot issues, specifically under the front passenger door. It’s not as public knowledge, so be careful if you’re considering them and make sure to check!

    My mom owns a 2011 and I've driven it as a rental when I come home to visit occasionally. It is an amazing little truck! The manual is surprisingly good and while yes that 2.7 motor is like an asthmatic panda, it just keeps going. In the last 13 years with the car, she's had no issues whatsoever.

    An extended or crew cab might be nice but this is all the truck most truck people really need. Maybe a V6 if they tow a small trailer or jet skis. The bed is plenty big enough for the hardware store run but it's small enough to drive easily.

    I have this same truck (2008), same color and everything. Nearly 200k rock solid miles of getting me and my gear to the mountains every weekend. Some light offroad duty. Lots of winter snow driving. I've hauled over 2000lbs of rock in it---twice. I had the valve cover gasket and the water pump replaced last year at about 180k....and that's about it.

    Those regular cabs look so good. I’ve got a first gen regular cab but I have a 2nd gen access cab. I’m still jealous of every regular cab 2nd gen owner, especially if it’s the Boomer special 2wd

      My dad has a 2nd gen regular cab 2wd 5-speed manual. He hasn't driven it much only like 80k miles.
      I actually prefer 2wd trucks because they are essentially bulletproof without the complexity of 4wd, less weight and better mpgs and acceleration.

    I prefer the 2nd gen Tacomas over the 3rd gens. I have a 2015, and the only real thing they changed throughout the 2nd generation from 2005-2015 was a slightly updated front end and a touchscreen. However thankfully the touchscreen doesn’t dominate the interior, and all important actions are buttons/knobs, which is great. That’s what I like about my truck gives everything you need, not much you don’t.

      They definitely have the better engine. Have you had to worry about frame rust at all?

    • @77ford20
      @77ford20 7 місяців тому +1

      @@dawsongranger4940 Nope, I have not had to worry about frame rust in the 8 months I've had it. The previous owner took very good care of it, by the time it reached me it had only around 58,000 miles. The frame is pretty much spotless. In general, the newer you go the less you have to worry about the frame issues. Of course you should be diligent and check the frame of any vehicle you buy, but I wasn't worried. By 2015, which was the last year of the 2nd gen, Toyota had ironed out most issues, especially since they had just had a huge recall on the earlier 2nd gens. I still try to keep on top of rust protection, however I do not live in a state that uses salt on roads in the winter. If I was looking at a truck from the midwest, I'd be more concerned about rust. Hope this helps!

    Bought mine in 2017 for 12K.. 124K miles, Metallic Grey. It's been a horse...though the bench seat is awful. Low-end torque good but I only use 4th & 5th (which are virtually the same) on level or downhill. Transmission shifts like a '39 Ford w/o synchromesh.
    Lots of offers to buy it, notes left on the windshield, etc. I've never found any serious rust on any part of the frame, neither did Toyota though they did undercoat it.

    Nice video! I didn't realize how many little interior differences were in the standard cab to my own extended cab, even down to the cupholders (mine easily fit 40 oz hydroflasks even). One big issue is that a lot of people didn't get their frames replaced, even if it was eligible like my truck's previous owner (according to my vin). I made friends with a local welder as a result and he told me some horror stories about these and their predecessors so I'm glad you spent some time on the problem as so many people don't bat an eye on it!

  • @reallyrandomrides1296

    I love this truck! First of all it's a Toyota truck and I'm a Toyota fan boy (I currently own a Tundra and a Corolla). Secondly, it's regular cab, short box, which is quite rare. I also like the proportions. And it's a base model, from 2010, so just the right amount of basic technology to make it comfortable and reliable as a work truck. Today's trucks are overloaded with gadgets and technology, some of it good, some of it is debatable. Fourth, it's a 4x4 which increases its usefulness and gives it a nice stance. Fifth, it's got a manual transmission (also a rarity in today's trucks). I test drove a manual Tacoma a few years ago and loved it! But I needed more towing capacity so I got the Tundra. As for the engine, the good thing about the 4 cylinder is that it's reliable and fuel efficient, but definitely not fast or outrageously powerful. A V6 with the 5 speed manual transmission would make it so much more fun to drive and more powerful for towing and work but at the expense of worse fuel economy. This would be a cool and fun truck to own, and it looks great painted in black. Booyah!

      @@legion1630 I've currently got a 2009 Tundra CrewMax SR5 Off-Road. Previously had a 2011 Tundra DoubleCab Limited. There are a few years (I think 2007 and 2008) that had some potential issues with the 5.7 if you drove through very deep water, I believe it was fixed by 2009. I kind of like the newer look 2014-2021. The newer it is, the more modern features it will have, but is still a nice blend of old school V8 pickups and relibility.

    I had one of these in the extended cab version, it was slow but damn reliable and never let me down. If I had kept it, would have dropped a supercharger in it. Upgraged to a 4 door V6 instead but do miss that old 4 cyl at times. Mainly the manual transmission. Tacomas have a nasty habit of hunting gears on the highway with the auto, really annoying. Going up a small incline that it doesn't even need to downshift for causes it to slam down into the passing gear, rev out, then upshift again. It'll do this over and over, especially in a strong headwind so it makes the CC useless for most highway applications unfortunately. No doubt it will eventually kill the auto trans if you let it go like this unabated all the time. The manual trans is the way to go with a Tacoma. All generations of Tacoma so far have this problem.

    • @jamiewilliamson9687
      @jamiewilliamson9687 21 день тому

      I'm curious, how do you think the 4cyl manual does on hilly terrain? Do you have to downshift for hills on the highway with cruise control on or does it generally do just fine? Interested in a 4cyl manual but curious about how slow it really feels. Might need to just drive one to find out.

And they're easier to live with especially in areas with a lot of stop and go traffic. So except it's going to be a weekend car, I'd rather have an automatic.
