    One one hand, the animation is excellent, almost at the level of the first movie and it can be very funny when it tries. On the other hand... "Love can cure death".

    It always came off to me that Jumbaa didn't tell anyone out of a bit out of pride. Stitch was his creation and this glitch was a reflection of him and not only that he knew that this might have been a problem, but did nothing about it until Stitch started to fall apart so it seemed like it was his responsibility to fix him. Then again, the not telling just seemed like a writing manipulation for tension. Stitch should have know about this and that could have been the source of the tension, Jumbaa may have focused so much on making the machine he never bothered to tell anyone and Stitch was too ashamed to tell Lilo about the problem because it could have been a reminder he's not 'real' in the sense he was an experiment.

    I think the ending would have been more logical if some experiment (like Sparky, for example) had followed Stitch around, understood his struggle and secretly recharged the fusion chamber to make It work and revive Stitch. If only this movie took place AFTER Stitch the Movie...

    I always figured Jumbaa and Pleklee never told Nani because Nani wouldn't believe that Stitch has a glitch and believe it to be an excuse to get items "toaster" to try and make crop circles or other Alien stuff Nani disapproves on.
    With lilo so focused of the Dance contest to the point that she never really stopped to take a breath of why Stitch is acting the way he is she'd never notice. And with Stitch always being, Stitch I always figured that lilo didn't really notice or it standing out much from Stitch's regular habit. At 7yrs old I wouldn't really recognize a seizure if I saw one for the first time.

    I'm surprised they didn't have Daveigh Chase come back to reprise her role as Lilo for this movie. She voiced Lilo in the two sequels/spin-offs and the TV series, so why not for this movie instead of Dakota Fanning?
    Also, you make an excellent point about the film's "moral" Jambareeqi. I shudder to think of a parent putting this movie on for their child as to help them cope with the loss of a pet or grandparent, only to inadvertently upset them more because Fido or Grandma's not coming back because the child must not love them enough.

    • @Jambareeqi
      @Jambareeqi  8 років тому +19

      +Charles Randolph You can't just move a story forward for the sake of it, a narrative has to progress and function naturally. If the makers wanted to give Jumba a challenge, then maybe the machine could have required an item that was understandably hard to get hold of e.g. a rare alien device from another planet guarded by an intimidating monster. Not their friend's run of the mill toaster.

  • @ultrairrelevantnobody1862
    @ultrairrelevantnobody1862 4 роки тому +2

    Wouldn't you also say that the ending kind of contradicts what the first film stands by? The original makes it clear that Lilo doesn't have parents, and the sequel pushes that to a heavier degree. As a result you could criticise the ending for being confusing and making the film overall being at odds with itself. A kid watching both films can most likely tell that Lilo is an orphan with parents that aren't alive anymore. With this is mind, the ending where Stitch comes back just like that can raise a number of unanswered questions. Shouldn't Lilo have been able to bring her parents back by saying "I will always love you"? Why is the film suddenly contradicting what it was kind of going for from start to finish.
    Because of this I can't exactly say the film gives an unintentional and potentially harmful message to its target audience, especially considering that most who would watch this are those who loved the original, but the ending is still poor regardless. Essentially raising unnecessary questions and being at odds with what its trying to imply, resulting in a poorly written effort overall. What do you think?

  • @silverstarlightproductions1292
    @silverstarlightproductions1292 5 років тому +1

    I disagree about the moral of the story. What I got out of it wasn't "love can bring back the dead" but rather "death cannot end love and love keeps the person alive in your heart."

    • @Jambareeqi
      @Jambareeqi  5 років тому +3

      Seeing as no one actually fully dies in the film, I strongly disagree that overcoming grief through cherished memories was the lesson, because no one is asked to accept the permanent loss of loved one. The story that inspired Lilo's story concludes with Lilo directly saying "The lesson of that tale, was that love conquers death", and the only reason Stitch returns from death is because Lilo said "I love you" - zero others reasons are given. So I stand by what I said.

    Just like the T-800, Stitch has an alternate power source. There is a lot of heat left over in Stitch’s body after his final glitch fried his circuits. Stitch can use heat energy to recharge his circuits, but Stitch initially chooses not to use his alternate power source because he believes that he’s a danger to the Pelekai family. Fortunately, Stitch realizes that he doesn't want to die when he hears Lilo reassure him that she will continue to love him and consider him a member of his ohana despite his unstable mental state. Now that Stitch’s spirit has been metaphorically brought back to life by Lilo’s powerful words, Stitch's body is able to come back to life by transferring all of the heat energy in his body to his circuits. Here's the scene where the reprogrammed T-800 uses his alternate power source to wake up after his main power source is taken out by the T-1000: ua-cam.com/video/yokGq0yKdUc/v-deo.html

    To be honest. When I used to watch this movie a lot as a kid. I never thought it had a harmful message like that. I simply thought the fusion chamber was working yet the bar wasn't increasing right from the get go. Looking back, it was practically an assumption as why would anyone build a recharge machine that doesn't start as soon as the power is on? Interesting looking back at my past.
    As an adult. Lilo and Stitch 2 is my least favourite of the Lilo and Stitch movies. It had the potential to be on par with the original as the magic and charm is there but as you said, the bad storytelling that's filled with stupid scenes and annoying padding really hurts the film big time. I haven't watched this movie in a long time, and only once, so I don't remember how the message is portrayed, but often in a film, a message can apply to this circumstance, but not others. The love conquers death could apply in Lilo and Stitch's case, but not others. But the question is, does the film frame it that way, or does it frame it as love being your go to cure for all death. I don't remember. I don't have a problem with a moral of a story being This-Situation-Specific, as long as it frames it that way.
    Like with VeggieTales: The League of Incredible Vegetables, just because you trust in God does NOT mean nothing can harm you. God may be there with you, even at the hardest times, but that doesn't mean he won't allow those hard thing to happen. Sure, the machine being run on your worst fears and using them against you makes it ineffective if you have no fears, so it worked in that circumstance, but if the machine was equipped with a veggie shredder or something, it could have sliced you down right there. Maybe God would be there to take you to Heaven, maybe in that you can feel confident, but your trusting in God is not a guarantee way to prevent you from getting sliced and diced into a veggie platter.

    I think the idea that the message at the end, while not very good, would actually convince people that you have to love someone enough to bring them back from the dead is one, a little too harsh on the movie, and two, not giving kids enough credit. I was a kid when I watched this movie, and I never thought I could just love someone back to life. I took the movie as it was: fiction. I think the idea that this message could actually fool someone is giving the said message too much credit while not giving the intelligence of children enough credit. Give me one example of someone who was fooled by this lesson instead of taking it as a piece of fiction, and maybe your argument will hold some water, but even then the amount of people who wouldn't fall for it would be overwhelming. Just looking at the comments on this video, while I see a lot of comments criticizing the "lesson", I don't see anyone say they were outright fooled by this "lesson". And to be fair on the movie, I don't think it was trying to teach anything. It was just an excuse for the ending. And yes, it was a cop out, but a dangerous lesson for kids? I don't think so.

    Lilo and Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch is the animated kid friendly version of Terminator 3: Rise of Machines. The budget is high, the action is great, and the opening and climax is dark and highly emotional, but the actor of the main character is replaced, the highly important badass mother figure that fans of the franchise love is lazily written out of the movie, there's an unnecessary cheesy romantic side plot, some of the jokes are extremely cringey, the themes clash with each other in an awkward and jarring way, the pacing sucks, and the plot makes no sense!

    Granted, if kids are so smart, wouldn't they see the problem with this message anyway and go "Yeah, life doesn't work like that...It's Disney magic." I mean, they got away with that sorta thing back in the old times because parents jobs were to tell kids it's just a movie and not to take anything too literal in it. Not saying movies for kids should be stupid but I'm just saying, I think some stupid shit can be gotten away with because kids know things aren't to be taken so literal in a film. When I was a kid, I didn't believe everything shown to be in cartoons, especially when a character was brought back to life via magic! I just knew life didn't work that way and my family made sure I did. It's the parents job to guide their kid, not a movie and kids should be encourage to ask their parents questions.
    Shoot, you can argue, Beauty and the Beast did that too. Beast dies, Belle says "I love you" all of a sudden the spell is broken and that somehow brings Beast back to life, despite the curse never said "Oh and if you die in this state, you get brought back to life". Media for kids should be smarter and better in writing, but I think it can get away with some stupid stuff, if the rest of the movie is decent to watch.

    • @Jambareeqi
      @Jambareeqi  6 років тому +6

      There's a difference between cartoon logic or little story hiccups, and glaring plot holes or messages that insult the audience. These aren't minor problems, they are big and noticeable, ones that truly underestimate the audience's intelligence and ruin the story on the surface. There's only so far you can take suspension of disbelief or draw a line for what's acceptable for a kid's movie.
      Yes, kids are clever enough to not believe in magic and know what death is when they reach a certain age, but not all of them have made that epiphany yet. Children are smart, and can even spot things that go unnoticed by adults, but they can also be impressionable when learning new things, because they trust their peers to teach them.
      Yes, parents have the job to help guide their kids in life, but Adult filmmakers do hold a responsibility too, they are still communicating with children on a public platform, and that's a VERY mature and heavy responsibility. I mean, you wouldn't say school teachers can get away with screwing up lessons or being insensitive about complex topics, because their parents will fix their mistakes when they go home, would you?
      All children vary in personality and understanding, and some of them take films more seriously than others. Sometimes, kids won't ask questions, as they trust a film enough to think it's already been answered for them, because they know this was a product made by older mature adults who know better. So with this in mind, it's best that films take the opportunity teach them important truths about life, while also telling them an engaging fantastical story. This is why the best children's movies handle their final lesson with care and sensitivity, but still retain a sense of fun imagination for storytelling value.
      When making a movie for kids, adult filmmakers have the amazing opportunity to shape the world for them, paint a bigger picture for how things work, comfort them through hard times at a young age, and help them learn about important things. It's not exactly harmless to leave behind the implied message "Your loved one isn't coming back, because you didn't love them like Lilo loves Stitch", especially when a child is feeling sensitive about a losing a loved one and doesn't fully comprehend the concept of death yet.
      It's the principles, a "fuck it, their parents will fix our damage" attitude isn't tasteful or wise when teaching the end of life to children (Heck, you could argue it's unfair to the parents too, who have to clean up the mess). The best kid's movies are smart and thoughtful enough to speak on parent's behalf, who won't always be by their child's side for every film they see.
      Fair enough if you can shrug off this kind of bad writing from children's filmmakers, but I expect a higher standard from them, as someone who sees children's film as a chance to comfort, teach, assure, and grow young generations.
      It's my job to call children's film writers out as a critic, when they write something insultingly dumb, or approach a sensitive topic without care or concern about their potentially offensive implications. If I looked the other way everytime a children's film did something patronising or harmful, then i'd be encouraging filmmakers to try less and not be careful when making movies for kids.
      And yes, Beauty and the beast can also be criticised for sugarcoating death, but L&S 2 is way more outspoken about the message "Love cures death". Lilo literally says that the story that inspires her dance has the message "Love is more powerful than death", she says this out loud to the audience.
      It's naive to not make the connection between that story's message and the movie's conclusion, especially when the film clearly used that story's message to justify Stitch's resurrection, just to cop out of finding a way to resolve Stitch's death. So the audience is left with nothing valuable to apply to their real lives, and the film ends up guilt tripping kids who have lost loved ones.
      The makers of L & S 2 actively chose to explore the heavy and complex topic of death, which can't be simply watered down with whimsy when addressed to kids, because it can lead to offensive or insensitive connotations, and they must take responsibility for this as grown ups who volunteered to teach death to kids.

    10:06 Cartoon Characters I don't notice obvious things. We all know that when Bugs Bunny dresses up that he isn't a woman but Elmer Fudd doesn't know that.

      Lilo and Elmer Fudd are drastically different characters, plus this movie isn't supposed to be set in the Looney Tunes universe. At the end of the day, it's just bad writing to help force dramatic tension between Lilo & Stitch's friendship

      @@Jambareeqi That was just an example. It seems to be a general unspoken law for all cartoon characters. Like How Ash and his buddies even Brock the smartest one falls for Team Rocket's disguises. Cartoon Characters don't notice stuff that is obvious to the audience no matter how smart they are.

      @@Jambareeqi Also I think the reason why they kept Stich's glitch a secret is because they didn't want the family to be sad and be distressed. They probably should have outright said that. It's still silly to keep it a secret but that was probably their reason.
