Islamabad, Pakistan ➖ When I first arrived in Islamabad, I was amazed to see the lush greenery and huge mountains that surrounded the city. So today, I decided I was going to hike to Monal via Trail 3 and eat a luxurious meal overlooking the city.
Well, after 3 hours of walking I finally made it... Monal. It wasn't long until a storm came by and threw tables, plates and glasses around the restaurant and I had to seek cover inside.
In the end, we got the delicious meal and had to find a way back to ISB. After receiving a price of 500rs (which I should have agreed on) I came up with the bright idea, of hitchhiking in the middle of a storm... stupid idea.

Usually Islamabadi people don’t go to Monal there are mostly outsiders from other cities so there is no chance to get lift by them because they might be with their families and their privacy comes first . But if you find any Islamabadi there they won’t say you No .

Well to understand a bit about Isb n local culture about hitch hiking...
- first thing that majority of locals arent aware of this term hitch hiking. If you plan to do this in Pakistan, better use the term, "taking a lift" or "asking for a lift"
- if you want to ask for a lift you need to be more specific coz its not a common sight in Pakistan that a tourist/foriegner is travelling on foot n asking for a lift, therefore, you need to properly show hand gestures for lift, like 👍🏻 or ✋🏻otherwise they wont assume themselves that if you are standing on road side then you are interested in a lift. They would assume you are waiting for someone.
- isb is a rich city where almost everyone has its own car/transport therefore they arent accustomed to concept of lift. If you are somewhere else, like Karachi or lahore, or near highways, people there are more into lift culture and they would happily give you. Hope this help in your future travellin Pakistan.
You are the bravest of all. I had to turn away and cover my eyes when you walked up then down those black ( maybe cast iron) spiral stairs. Then it just got worse from there. I about had a heart attack when the mountain kept getting steeper and steeper. It was very steep and full of those rocks. The rocks were practically everywhere. It just seems rather unsafe and quiet possible very slippery. Then the wind and lightning ⛈. Glad you enjoyed your meal.
Getting flashbacks to 2019, when I decided to hike up to Monal with a couple of friends despite being someone who can't even walk for more than an hour on a straight path. 😂 I wasn't this adventurous in the face of my miseries, so this was really fun to watch! 😔💜
hey and i'd also just give an advice that you should probably do a poll on instagram and ask for their opinions before actually visiting a place, people will guide you thru it
Agree
My family and i are ALWAYS watching your videos and they make us happy!
We are half Pakistani and Australian :)
Wow😮. That was the No. 1 among your travel vlogs in Pakistan so far. What I like in your vlogging style is that your videos are neither too short, nor boringly long. After watching this video I suggest
1. You speak a little bit fast so some people can't understand you quickly. Speak at ease.
2. Wear your mask at congested places.
3. Here in Pakistan, most Careem riders don't keep an extra helmet despite the direction of the company, so buy your own - a lightweight one that you may keep with your backpack if you intend to take a Careem bike within the city.
Hope these tips will make you feel more comfortable and secure.😊
Thunderstorms like that are very common in Islamabad but to experience them at such scenic view (of course if you are safe) above everyone else is an adventure in itself. U r so lucky with that!
Exactly! what i've been thinking through the last half of the video!
That was very entertaining Luke. It isn’t a good idea to go for a hike without checking the forecast. Glad you made it to Monal before the storm hit. Also, people generally don’t hitchhike in Islamabad especially with cheap options such as Careem. Many would be cautious of letting strangers in their vehicles especially when they are out and about with their families.
Pakistan is so beautiful. It's refreshing contrast to India. Watching your videos from Auckland.
Welcome's love from Pakistan 😍😊😁
Yup yup yup,
It's really great in all aspects.
ALHAMDULLILAH (THANKS TO ALLAH).
Luke your hiking trip in Islamabad was damn adventures ! The thunderstorm at Monal was icing on the cake. A great fun filled trip. BIG thumbs up.
Just a small advice, always bargain to Pakistan's, specially these taxis and rikshaws.
just tell them "other guy is charging less than you" and walk away and see how it goes. I am Pakistani and watching u from Sydney❤
Please make a video on "How to tell a Lie" so he and even i can learn
No one should approach or take a ride in these taxis, they charge too much money Or you should know how to bargain.. Always Use Uber,Careem apps to know what will be the rate from your current location & to your destination - just to determine the rates, this is helpful in case when out of city these apps/services of uber, careem do not work..
Yeah u r right. Probably it would be hard for him because of language barrier.
Yes they charge alot on purpose
You are naïve "u dont always bargain" when u r getting fair price, I live in Islamabad and the first guy offered him ride for 500 which usually cost more than that he refused it, so has to pay double which was still a good deal as it was the only taxi available

I have to say this was so hillarious to watch in a good way. First of all nobody knew exact time of hiking apart from that gentleman who told you that its 3km left. Also generally Pakistani people are kind and famous for their hospitality.
That shop guy asked for 150 rupee for 4 bottles while the uber was like 80 rupees sounds like water is more expensive than bensine. Also you were unlucky/lucky to experience Monal restaurant in rainy weather, otherwise in a good sunny day its a great experience.

I love watching your videos and your adventurous spirit, but you have a lot to learn about other cultures. There is little to no concept of hitchhiking in Pakistan. Perhaps in the 70's when the hippies came by but that is long gone. I gather you are in Egypt right now. Do look up a guy named Brien Feorester he will enlighten you how and what to see in Egypt that no tour guide will tell you about. I greatly admire your spirit and am vicariously living through your experiences which would be so much more fruitful with better knowledge. Keep doing what you are doing and I wish you all the best in all your travels. Your inspire me greatly and I am fit to be your dad :p

That's true never ever hike alone
Most of them take (view point) where people were working as the destination and will say one hour, rest assure it takes more then that to reach Monal. And if you start the walk early morning, you will be lucky to see beautiful forest birds on the track. Have a good stay Luke in Pakistan, I'm sure you will remember it throughout your life.
Ma guy really goes up the mountain, mounts the camera then goes down to climb it up again for the video 😂 Props for the effort mate!
And yeah us Pakistanis don't have any sense of time... if someone tells you they'll reach you in 15 minutes that means he's still at home getting ready for an hour journey to your location 👍
