When I was growing up, my Dads friend, a crop duster, was a former Marine Aviator, WWII, who flew the bent wing bastard. He told me the four props were Korean War era.

The -4 had four props and saw service late in WW2 from Okinawa on. This is a -5 you can tell by the two air scoops on either side of the nose. The -4 has a single scoop under the nose. The -5 did not see service in WW2.

The cowling was lowered two degrees to help with forward visibility, but perhaps most striking as the first variant to feature all-metal wings (223 units produced).[109]
F4U-5N: Radar equipped version (214 units produced)

Oh my, as the plaque says, as is obvious, this is an F4U-5N Korean War era Corsair in the markings of Lt. Guy Bordelon who was the only Navy ace, only night fighter ace and only prop-driven ace of the Korean War.
Looks to be a very nice example indeed!

Any Corsair is beautiful however that -5 version, there is something about it with those twin air intakes and 20mm's is as if it is as good as any piston/prop fighter plane can be. Please keep preserving all of these aircraft.

F4U-5: A 1945 design modification of the F4U-4, first flown on 21 December 1945, was intended to increase the F4U-4 Corsair's overall performance and incorporate many Corsair pilots' suggestions. It featured a more powerful Pratt and Whitney R-2800-32(E) engine with a two stage supercharger,

I think he’s talking about the Hellcat, the Corsair prototype first flew in like 1940 or 1941. The hellcat was a result of the Zero’s superiority over the wildcat.

This is the Korean War variant with the 4 props. The gentlemen in the video sounds convincing, but doesn't know what he's talking about. The hellcat was the one that was specifically built to combat the zero.

F4U corsair listed on Wikipedia as being built before WWII (1940s). With the video narrator saying: plane was built to "answer" the Japanese Zero .... Why'd we have Pearl Harbor .....?
The Grumman Hellcat F6F , however looked like a Grumman Wildcat, but, had it's engine power as it's surprise and
more. ~This~ was the answer to the Zero. As much as I adore the Corsair, the Hellcat dropped Zero's like flies.

Other improvements included automatic blower controls, cowl flaps, intercooler doors and oil cooler for the engine, spring tabs for the elevators and rudder, a completely modernized cockpit, a completely retractable tail wheel, and heated cannon bays and pitot head.

The Corsair was a great fighter BUT it could NOT out turn an aircraft half it's weight. You oversell a magnificent plane. What the Akutan Zero showed is that it could not dive well and was slow in a starboard turn. What US fighters did trailing a Zero in a turn that they couldn't match is go into the vertical.

when ignorant people portray themselves as experts...
The contract for the prototype was signed in June 1938 so how captured Zeroes figured in the design...
also notice the 4x 20mm cannon instead of the 6x .50 cal. The 20mm was available in WWII but very rare. Since this is the -5N, it was a night fighter.

No disrespect to the poster but the "Wildcats" were F4F, not F4U and this particular model was not in service during WWII. The -5N models saw action during the Korean conflict and many were in service long after.

I think this guy is confusing the F4F Wildcats by calling them F4Us. The story he told of the crashed Zero benefited the development of the F6F Hellcat mainly. That F4U-5N was a later production Corsair identified by the 4x20mm cannon in place of the 6x.50 cal Brownings.

  • @Daniel-os9tb
    @Daniel-os9tb 3 роки тому

    Not f4u wildcat. It’s f4f and f6f hellcat
. The f4u Corsair replaced. That’s cite is wrong. That was not a 42 Corsair. The cowling is different. That is the last model Corsair served in 44-45. That’s when they started the four prop role out. Before the super Corsair was finished. Corsair production began in dec 42 and those had the razor back cockpit which half way through the first run. The replaced with the semi bulb cockpit. Eventually going to a more bubble style sliding cockpit which led to the super corsairs large p-51 style canopy.

This guy does not know what he's talking about. Both the zero and this plane were vertically in development at the same time and almost entered the services at the same time. Improvements on both planes happened though out the war. Matter of fact, what he's probably referring too is the two captured zeros in 1941. When the dod evaluated them and determined that yes the zero was a good plane. But lightly armed, armored and not setup for long duration flights. Technically they didn't really address the duration flights in the American aircrafts. But in that assessment they realized our planes despite having a deficiencies could out last in a dog fight. War of attrition. The fist zeros carried light ammo too. Not sure. But they might have started with 10mm then went to 30 then 50 and finally settling on the 20 mm auto cannon that everyone remembers. The reason was because the Americans had heavily armored planes. Well, hard plates anyhow. So they needed something to knock some holes. Both aircraft are listed in wiki. I think he is confusing the bearcat with the corsair. Maybe.
