Love the additions of album of week, acquisition of the week and photography show info & rec! All feeding the appreciation of the arts. Totally fitting additions. 👍
Don’t beat yourself up my man, we all have our reading slumps! Also, as an American, thanks for highlighting ole Jimmy. We’re not all Trumpy people lol I swear. My dad met Jimmy Carter on a commercial plane one time. Said he was very kind and took the time to meet every passenger
Reading slumps are the wooooooorst! When I get into one, I tend to do what you’re doing - go back to a genre I love or an author I am familiar with to “reset” so to speak. I’m with you on series reads - I don’t do well with binging them, I usually try to space them out so I don’t get overwhelmed. Good luck, and sick shirt!
Hey man! Always excited to see a new video. If you're looking for a short horror story. Annihilation got me out of a reading slump. Reads like a journal entry from a person that enters this area X. And stuff gets real weird. Loved it, and took 2-3 sittings to finish. Hope the slump ends soon!
I love the shirley jackson t-shirt. Hill house and the lottery are some of my favourite reads of all time and ive got we have always lived in the castle on my shelf waiting to be read! I think i'll make it my next read!
I also love the idea of ‘album of the week’! The T-shirt is ace! I can recommend Alice Ravenwood and the Tomb of St George for getting out of a reading slump. It’s a light-hearted adventure with a touch of comedy.
Yeah I picked up on the same thing about Britney’s book. She has a lot Of grace for everyone including her father. It takes a strong person to do that.
Wow! Nice to see some love for Towell's THE MENNONITES. I love Larry Towell's work. (I teach photography at a university in the UK and am constantly pushing Towell's photobooks into the hands of students.) Josef Koudelka is another favourite of mine.
From another corner of UA-cam, one of my favorite curly hair UA-camrs, Curly Susie (she doesn't post regularly anymore, but I still love her), always says, "if you liked this please give it a thumbs up, if you didn't like it, give it a thumbs down." Or something to that ilk. I love it because it's framed as feedback rather than just praise, and probably everyone who hated it was already going to give it a thumbs down anyway. Love your videos and how psyched you are about things!
I’m new here too - already have a big list to read in the making. And I too loved the Holdovers! I’m thinking it’s an annual holiday rewatch at this point. Just incredible. Thanks, Nick!
Beartown. Ok exactly. I read them years apart and appreciated it. And I can totally see it being like UGH if I read them back to back. Definitely good idea to wait!
Shirley Jackson is a sure cure for any reading slump - I keep copies of "Dark Tales" and "The Lottery and Other Stories" unshelved and ready for slump-clearing action at all times and start with some of her shortest short stories, which I find to be her sickest. Early Stephen King novels also help in this regard. Thanks for the photography recommendation - his work reminds me of Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans, two long-time favorites.
Thats a good way to get out of a slump, going back to a favored genre. Or, not. I kinda go into a mini slump after each book ( about a day) What a writer Shirley Jackson is! And that 1st sentence ...or whole 1st paragraph...of Hill House! Gem, amazing! 🤫🤫🤫🤫 ( i subscribed) ( love your videos)
I've definitely been in a reading slump myself. Glad your video popped up today! I hope libby comes back up for you soon... I dont know what I'd do without the scrolling of the books!! 😢 Keep being sick Nick ✌️📚
My trick is to stick to a minimum number of pages read a day. I usually recommend 15-25 pages to most people. Even when you're in a slump. You commit to those pages like your daily vitamin. This destroys slumps.
I can always tell when the slump is coming. Lately I have just embraced it, focused on other things for a few days/weeks and then my brain is like yeah, let’s read some books.
I can totally relate. Also, the final Bear Town book... I enjoyed the first half, but the second half I couldn't put down. I've never cried like that while reading a book.
Love the idea of album of the week! If you are looking for more folk bands to discover maybe try The Longest Johns or Sean Dagher if you haven't already! I was really lucky and got to see them both live last week and they're all incredibly talented and great people
I've gone through long periods when I didn't read ... Just didn't have the patience for it for some reason. But, when I get back into reading, I'm like a kid rediscovering this great hobby. Just take a break or read some really light entertaining short books and you'll get over the hump. Keep on doing what you do. I really enjoy your videos.
Okay but you saying to like and subscribe made me realize I've yet to subscribe to you but always search and watch your new videos soo thanks for the reminder 😂
I had similar feelings with Us Against You so I decided to take a break before The Winners so I was giving it a 'fresh start'. Excited for you to get inro more Backman. Anxious People is very different from Beartown. Highly recommend to see more of his creative/tone range.
I'm in the same boat as you, reading slumps are no the year so well and I've been struggling to find the motivation to start it up again. Hopefully March will be better!!
Randon comments: Love the shirt. I just ordered the Ottessa one. I think you've mentioned your wife was the one who got you into reading. It would be cool to have her on a video. Love your channel!
It's reassuring to hear other folks are hitting reading slumps. It's actually a push to get out of the slump knowing others are knees-deep in self motivation. Read on, fellow readers, read on!
Don't be too hard on yourself, motivation comes and goes :-) I would like to say, though, that sometimes the best cure is to just pick up a new book, something that you're really drawn to, and just ignore the ones you're in the middle of. At least for a moment. I think life is too short for wasting time with books that don't spark joy, and you can always pick them up the next week or the next month. Your content is amazing, I also enjoy the branching out to other interests of yours!
First I want to say I love you videos. Sorry to hear about Libby. I just hosted a Literacy night at the elementary school I work at and hooked parents up with like 8 library cards and Libby, Endless free books! Hope it is up and working for you soon! Take care of yourself!
I love how awkward you are about liking and subscribing. It's become my favorite part of your videos. When you don't say it I tsk tsk you!! Lol! I have subscribed and often like your videos...even if I don't click the button.
My whole January was a slump and it kinda always is. Next year I'm going to remember and get a bunch of graphic novels and manga so I don't beat myself up about it again.
Curse of the mood reader. I am halfway through Wool (Silo series #1) and was loving it but then life got busy so I decided today put it down for a fluffier romantasy that my Libby hold came up on. It happens, I think going back to a genre that is your staple will help!
Slumps are the worst! I'm a mood reader and when i hit a slump, no amount of switchig books or genres helps. Just do other things that bring you joy until you find that want to read agin. But also like you said, sometimes going back to a fave might help. I didn't read at all n January, but I'm back in full force now.
Please read Lonesome Dove!! Its a western so folks can write it off…dont. Im a huge Stephen King fan…and still this is one of the best books Ive ever read!
Purchased Lonesome Dove and Swan Song yesterday. Not sure which one to start. Finished Death's End yesterday (last of 3 Body Problem trilogy). Halfway through The Institute too by King. Album of the week: Cult of Luna/Julie Christmas: Mariner (2016) ((Patrick, Galway, Ireland))
I've always broken up series as i think I'd feel the same. Read Jade City couple of weeks ago and i really wanna start Jade War but I'm gonna give it another month or 2.
I had a DNF book I couldn't get into 30 pages in. It wasn't for me. I tried another that a friend recommended and I'm intrigued with it 30 pages in. Some books just don't hit right.
I'm in the worst reading slump right now. I'm studying for the Nclex and work has been over the top stressful. So I switched to all audiobooks for now. The best idea is to go back to you what you love. I have thought I'd reading Stephen King, but a little hesitant to jump in. Thoughts on a good starter book?
Do you ever read short stories? I wonder if that can help with a reading slump? Normally I prefer novels, but lately I've been loving Carys Davies's book The Redemption of Galen Pike, Kate Atkinson's Normal Rules Don't Apply, and Roald Dahl's The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More.
I had this exact feeling when I attempted to read the Raymond Chandler Marlowe books in order one after the other.. I enjoyed them all but I was stuck between "am I not enjoying the sequels as much because they aren't as good or because I'm growing tired of the repetitive themes"
I loved Beartown and hated Us against you... to me it felt like a 400page long recap of the first book (which should have stayed a stand alone) and i had to skip some parts to get to the end. I keep Beartown close to my heart but the other 2 dont exist in my head canon 😂
That was my experience with the Beartown trilogy exactly (and I crushed the trilogy this February as well)! The Winners was my least favorite of the three…it’s also a little more bloated than it needs to be. It could’ve easily been the same length as the first two. To me it gets bogged down in Peter Anderson’s relatively uninteresting problem (relative to Benji and the rest of the kids, at least).
Like & subscribe is definitely an ick, but I accept that it’s a part of the biz. However, what got me to subscribe was actually just the name of your channel. Haha books are so sick!
Slumps: I always just pick up an old favorite since I know I’ll love it. But it won’t have shocking new fav vibes making the next book I read feel terrible in comparison. If that makes sense. My apologies for using vibes. 👀👉🏻👈🏻
Love the additions of album of week, acquisition of the week and photography show info & rec! All feeding the appreciation of the arts. Totally fitting additions. 👍
Thank you my dude! Just wanted to add some weekly staples - haha :)
Don’t beat yourself up my man, we all have our reading slumps!
Also, as an American, thanks for highlighting ole Jimmy. We’re not all Trumpy people lol I swear. My dad met Jimmy Carter on a commercial plane one time. Said he was very kind and took the time to meet every passenger
short stories and novellas help me get out of reading slumps
Your phone pinging in each video is like an Easter egg and I really enjoy that lol
Reading slumps are the wooooooorst! When I get into one, I tend to do what you’re doing - go back to a genre I love or an author I am familiar with to “reset” so to speak. Currently reading Lonesome Dove because of you. LOVING it, character building is awesome as of now
I've been wanting to read it to after Nick's review.
So stoked to hear that! What a book!
Yeah I LOVE the mini series but never planned to read the book because I already loved that so much, but he's got me reading it too 😁
Hey man! Always excited to see a new video. If you're looking for a short horror story. Annihilation got me out of a reading slump. Reads like a journal entry from a person that enters this area X. And stuff gets real weird. Loved it, and took 2-3 sittings to finish. Hope the slump ends soon!
Hey man! Great call!! I actually just recently picked that one up for a few bucks thrifting. I’ll check it out!!!
I love the shirley jackson t-shirt. Hill house and the lottery are some of my favourite reads of all time and ive got we have always lived in the castle on my shelf waiting to be read! I think i'll make it my next read!
Hope you do more like this, very enjoyable.
I also love the idea of ‘album of the week’! The T-shirt is ace! I can recommend Alice Ravenwood and the Tomb of St George for getting out of a reading slump. It’s a light-hearted adventure with a touch of comedy.

You should read Billy Summers by Stephen King. It’s one of my personal favourites, definitely a very underrated King book.
I love Shirley Jackson! Her memoir Life Among the Savages is so good!
From another corner of UA-cam, one of my favorite curly hair UA-camrs, Curly Susie (she doesn't post regularly anymore, but I still love her), always says, "if you liked this please give it a thumbs up, if you didn't like it, give it a thumbs down." Awesome content man. Binged watched all your videos and really like your content. Thanks for the awesome stuff
Thanks Ryan!! Stoked
Oh YAAAAAAA, Joel Plaskett is the damn BEST. Not sure if you know Hey Rosetta/Tim Baker but I highly recommend them for more east coast beauties!!
Beartown. Ok exactly. I read them years apart and appreciated it. And I can totally see it being like UGH if I read them back to back. Definitely good idea to wait!

Hahaha the ol’ switcheroo reverse psychology subscribe method

I picked up Anxious People by Fredrik Backman at the library yesterday. It only jumped out at me because of how much you love the Beartown books.
Randon comments: Love the shirt. I just ordered the Ottessa one. I think you've mentioned your wife was the one who got you into reading. It would be cool to have her on a video. Love your channel!
Joel Plaskett supremacy!
That's a sick shirt ^_^

Why do you always look at my left ear when you talk? Love the channel btw criminally underrated
I want a "you know what mean" tshirt 😅 it's my favorite thing
Seeing your tastes in books, of course I want to hear what music you are listing to !😊
The pringles!! Great idea to include the album of the week!
Sour cream and onion pringles are my existence
My whole January was a slump and it kinda always is. Next year I'm going to remember and get a bunch of graphic novels and manga so I don't beat myself up about it again.
Whoa, what? Your Canadian? You have perfected the American accent. Totally nailed it.
Would love to hear about albums/movies and things you’re currently into in addition to the books! Gives me some interesting new media to check out.
Curse of the mood reader. I am halfway through Wool (Silo series #1) and was loving it but then life got busy so I decided today put it down for a fluffier romantasy that my Libby hold came up on.

I really like your style. I also act out scary stories
We don’t mind you saying like and subscribe also super pumped to get my shirt in! 🐸
I'm also in a reading slump, atm. Which makes me sad, because I've only finished one book in February 😭
I liked and I subscribed 😉
Please read Lonesome Dove!! Its a western so folks can write it off…dont. Im a huge Stephen King fan…and still this is one of the best books Ive ever read!

I am reading Bill Brysons The body and when that gets too much dip into collected short stories by Somerset Maugham. That keeps it interesting
👍👍👍
Yo! So happy to have discovered you, our book tastes align so well! Are you open to dropping your Goodreads?
I've always broken up series as i think I'd feel the same. Read Jade City couple of weeks ago and i really wanna start Jade War but I'm gonna give it another month or 2.
I'm reading The Stand and I've gone right into a slump 😭
It's okay to take a break from reading.

May flys, you could read that and Maeve fly for a weird book duo. lol

Have you tried Hoopla for audiobooks?
Slumps: I always just pick up an old favorite since I know I’ll love it. But it won’t have shocking new fav vibes making the next book I read feel terrible in comparison. If that makes sense. My apologies for using vibes. 👀👉🏻👈🏻
Reading slumps are THE worst!!!
Did you ever finish Cujo?
Do you have a goodreads?
Books are sick
Books is sick
😂😂😂
Libby outtage outrage!
You could probably just add a like and subscribe little moving icon to your screen while you are talking.
Do Americans look as crazy to Canadians as we feel?
Read The Running Man, 1000x times better than the movie!
There's no shame in DNFing books you aren't enjoying. Life is too short to suffer through bad books.
