- In this lesson from Nancy Zhou's course on Dounis exercises, she discusses the technique of collé, meaning “glued.” Here she provides introductory exercises that lead up to those from the Dounis collection. The first is what Zhou calls chopping and she suggests you be mindful of the pinky when trying this.

Je n'ai pas tout saisi car je ne parle pas l'anglais, mais je sais que Nancy Zhou est une virtuose du violon !!! J'aime beaucoup son jeu 👍
I was so scared because I thought you would put pressure on the string and play lol. Thank goodness. I already have to hear that terrible noise during orchestra rehearsals
With enough bow speed it doesnt really matter, and if you hear those noises during rehearsal i dont know what to tell you but to join a better orchestra
Very helpful
Thank you Mr Mustapha and Casablanca moroco.
Good technical analysis. Now time to practice.
There's a whole wide World beyond classical music. Chop with a violin is used like mandolin chop in bluegrass. Listen to a little John Showman on fiddle in New Country Rehab and expand your horizons. John has a BA in violin performance btw.
Awesomeness
This is a technique commonly used for violin repretoire by Khachaturian, but rarely used anywhere else besides some contemporary composers today
ok which contemporary composer made this technique
LOL
shy to say, because less contemporary composer uses this tech… so I would like to share here. I did it in my string quartet piece “¿YES?”. I love chop so much! check it out.
Some unknown genius who people probably hated for it........ Now, folks who would have thought themselves better are trying to learn his thing :)
Me? I'm a beginner who knows nothing, but I do like the sound :)
This is just my got response to the question of who invented it :)
I do suspect the technique has been around longer than some think, but like I said, I don't really know much at this point.

Very useful, especially the pinky thing. Thx 🙏
Thank you Princess 🌹🌹
A shorter pinky nail would also help keep the pinky in place, flexible. Not sure why this is so rarely discussed but is it not obvious that if the nail is longer than the flesh it will be in the way?
Collé can be considered part of martelé stroke. The articulated beginning ..also practice for good bow control… with fingers, the pulling pushing of the detaché..
thnks for this
Bruh blending in be like 😔 until you come across this video & see other people out there with the same interest
Interesting that many people in the comments think it comes from contemporary composers… I thought it came from bluegrass and funky jazz violinists but I am not shure as well. Are there some good contemporary composition with explicit use of the chop out there?
Very insightful
You must do ✨ col legno ✨
Thank you!!! I am a beginner of cello. It is same for cello too.
❤❤
Check out Casey Drissen school of chop
Oooh tiene algo de uñasss me gusta
matur suksma
There’s a whole dissertation on the evolution of the chop. Did you write it?
It's not easy keeping pinky there 😶🌫️ my frog jumped backwards 🤣
Play it
🤔
:)
Its a old violin
the bass is easier
Hehe are you a Davie504 fan?
Dude
Just play. This is why music is being ruined. Just freakin play. If you can play, play. No need for chop chop bs
