in porsche's defence, they use quite an aggressive grippy tyre for an ev (ps4 or ps4s can't tell with certainty from the static shots) and as stated by you james the grip is tenacious, most evs use much harder less grippy tyres to get greater efficiency. A few years ago Jason cammisa did a test with his e golf where he fitted ps4s to it, from bridgestone ecopias, and range dropped from 140 miles to under 100, of cource gains to cornering g forces where almost inversed to the range drop (from 0.77g to 1g). Range and efficiency can increase drastically i believe but the trade off would be performance security and driving confidence.
Don't think that's true to such an effect. To some degree, for sure. But 40% is definitely way, way too much. BTW, Tesla delivers its Model 3 with PS4 on the standard 18", and Model Y with PS4 if you go for the optional 20" wheels. No efficiency drawbacks due to PS4 at all.
In the test you quoted, can it be that they went with different wheels and wheel sizes? (Just thinking, because PS4S is not available in all sizes, specifically smaller ones). Now, _that_ can be the difference. But even that can not explain 40% less range, not even near. Even going for winter wheels, which is completely different material, structure and pattern - I suffer mostly a 10% loss, all other values being equal.
@@pqvid Yes, in the e golf test they went from 205 to 225 and an inch increase in wheel diameter (so heavier wheels).
One more think to consider is that OE tyres are very different to off the shelf tyres, ev tuned tyres even when they are performance tyres take efficiency, noise and load much more seriously than other applications, I guess the taycan would benefit from that as well but maybe porsche has different requirements for other parameters (wet performance etc) that might effect range.
Loved the video & your honesty in all content. Part of me thinks we are going backwards with new cars. Too many manufacturers think cars are screens/top speed. Sports cars are meant to feel light, gt cars are should feel comfortable & luxurious. Luxury is wood/artistic design as well as pure refinement and comfort. Evs just feel like smartphones on wheels sadly as good as some are.
I agree. However, I find ICE vehicles, especially newer ones, have just been ruined by the regulations. Years and years of Diesel particulate filter issues and now they're fitting fparticulate filters to Petrol. My sister has a new sportage and constantly having filter issues. Not to mention rev limiters and stuff like that. Granted, my jag runs pretty well but I use premium fuel, with Ecomax in every tank and over-service it. If I could afford a Taycan or something like that, I probably would

It’s embarrassing. You’d have to specify deleting the designation. And it needs to be in bright metal.
When it was first released Porsche explained the brakes this way. Instead of implementing regenerative braking when you get off the accelerator pedal, they implement it when you step on the brakes, and attempt to seamlessly integrate the conventional (friction) brakes as you demand more braking. That car probably has some calibration issues.
James, have you spoken to the MacMaster, the other UA-camr who runs a Taycan as a daily. Loves and hates in equal measures. Lee is a lovely bloke and dead honest in his reviews.

Don't believe everything said, the Taycan is an amazing car and most likely the best all round EV out there to date. The handling makes this car far superior to most and it is a real head turner. Not sure what James is talking about in regards to quality, mine is amazing, although I do have the non-leather option, which I prefer. Yes it is not perfect, name me a car that is, but it gets pretty close using current EV tech available. The range is not amazing compared to a say a Tesla Model S Plaid, however even the Turbo S can achieve 200+ miles with a bit of spirited driving thrown in. Let's face it, how often do most of us travel more than that day to day? If you do, I doubt you would be in the market for a Taycan anyway!

@deanhart8154 yes, but it is a bit like any tech really, laptops, phones, tv's, as soon as you buy one it is out of date and there is always new developments. You have to bite the bullet at some point though and go for it.

Every time I see any EV (Taycan included) on the Danish Motorways or the German Autobahn, is sitting behind a lorry. Makes me smile when I cruise effortlessly by them at 200km/h in my humble 2l Bimmer diesel 😂. If that’s the future of cars, then I don’t want to be a part of it.
Yes at 200kmh will use twice as much electricity than at 100 no gears the motor goes twice as fast
Yes I see that a lot here too. The future (currently) is taking an hour or so longer to get anywhere - and spending more on coffee/ donuts as there's nothing else to do whilst charging..
@@pauldavies6037the Taycan has a 2-speed gearbox where the higher gear kicks in at 120kph at full throttle. That’s why it gets great consumption. Over 60000km I had an average of 19,7kwh/100km, or 3,15mi/kWh

A UK winter isn’t a Canadian winter - with Canadian driving distances. 500-600 Km in -35-40C weather is not something an EV can do - safely - -40 is life-threateningly cold.

As an owner of both an Aston Martin and a Tesla model 3, there's nothing to be scared of. EV's are great. The AM is beautiful, engaging, luxurious and feels very special to drive, but the Tesla is quicker and smoother. As a bonus, it needs no maintenance.

There seem to be a load of 60K 3 year old Taycans on Autotrader, which is sort of tempting, but shows the bullet proof residuals of Porsche aren’t wholly out of the massive drop in £ of EV cars overall. (Tempting to try an EV if you like)….but will stick to my Diesel SQ5 at the moment

I’ve got a 4S GT Taycan and despite coming from an F90 M5 it’s a brilliant machine that never disappoints when driving. I drive a lot of miles and charging currently isn’t a problem, sure the mileage is lower in the winter but currently I’m looking at 260 miles on a full charge and I don’t drive slowly! A great review, and I agree as the MK1 EV’s they are great but could do with some improvements.
So EVs are destroying the environment and bankrupting all nations (causing untold human misery and taking away our ability to invest in CO2-reducing projects), and the range of even these most expensive huge-battery environmental disasters is not good! Wow, I wonder how massive the costs of this latest "environmentalist" mistake will be before our course is corrected away from this disaster!
This will go down in history as one of the most terrible mistakes, global scams ever. The anti-nuclear and destruction of oil and natural gas producing capacities like in Germany's "Energiewende" has already been a catastrophic mistake, but this EV scheme will far surpass it in its destructive consequences!
What do you call a lot of miles? I have done 35k this past yr worth my EV, no home charger. Infrastructure is a right headache for me tbh... Driving an eC4 in the winter my range went from 180 in summer to 100 in winter and battery Deg is 6% currently so my range now in summer again is around 165/170

1:00 is that a tach on a taycan 🧐 or wrong footage?
Does that Taycan have a heat pump or resistive heating? That can make a big difference to cold weather range.

Had a Taycan Turbo S on order and had the demonstrator for a weekend. The first few hours playing with acceleration were amazing but i imagine soon wears off. In the end I couldn't justify spend £170k as specified with a winter range showing of 170 miles. Took it back said no thanks and bought a 992 GTS and kept my 4 year old Panamera.
Porsche is my favourite manufacturer, but boy do they know how to charge for things that should come as standard.
I’m currently travelling through Norway, which means that I’ve seen - apart from simply every other EV on the market - more Taycans in the last weeks than I did in my life before. The Sports Turismo really starts to grow on me.
Porsche has sold more Taycans in Norway since it launched than they have sold other models since 2003.

Another enjoyable video James. I had a look at a couple of Approved Used Taycans at my local Porsche dealership. I was looking to change my current 911 for one. In the end I just couldn’t do it; the economy/range being the initial issue for me. I have been subsequently keeping an eye on Porsche’s used car website. Their dealers have a huge glut of these cars. The 2 that I looked at are still available, several months on, and have had price reductions in that time. I would appear to me that Porsche are having a hard time shifting them presently. The very recent news about VW’s woes concerning over-prediction of demand for EVs is unlikely to reassure buyers about EVs generally. I’ll stick with my 911.

Great choice to stick with your 911. As you undoubtedly know, Porsche is in the synthetic fuels business. Over the next few years, we should be able to fill our cars with petrol... made out of thin air!
@@autobahnproven Absolutely. I am in Germany with my 911 at the moment. Yesterday I ended up chatting to a nice guy with a brand new viper green 992 GT3 RS in a car park (haven’t seen one yet in UK). He had several other 911s too, lucky man. The point of all this that he’d had a Taycan Turbo S and was scathing. He’d lost loads of money on it, and he said ‘he couldn’t even get to Hamburg on 1 f***g charge’. That’s around 150 miles from where we were chatting.
@@doctorleitz4795 agree completely. I no longer live in Germany but when I did, owned a few Porsche 928s and used them to travel long distances at then very high speeds - 290 almost daily. Refuelling at a Rasthof in less than 5 minutes including exiting and re-entering the Autobahn. Electric cars just cannot compete. Even Porsche electric cars are limited to 250km/h. Who in their right mind buys a PORSCHE with a speed limiter?
There may be a glut but there are more 911’s, Cayennes etc

As in no thank you. I respect the tech, but it leaves me cold. And that's before watching this well crafted review.
Jay , I am a self confessed petrol head with two thirsty petrol cars which I love and would not part with. Earlier this year I added a Taycan Turbo for daily use, including several long journeys up the M1 of over 300 miles each way. Having a home charger (just a 7kw) is a must if you want to run an EV as a daily, especially if, like me you don’t have a charger at work. I take your point on the Porsche charge card and I agree, depending on where you live and the journeys you want to take, this is only useful some of the time. However, personally I have not had a problem so far in the 17,000 miles I have driven in the Taycan this year , primarily due to home charging giving me a full (85%) charge each evening. Where I do disagree is with your assessment of the efficiency, I regularly get 2.9-3.3 miler per KWH out of mine in the summer and that has dropped to 2.5 milers per kWh in the colder months. Setting the car’s timer prepares the battery for a journey and warms it up sufficiently to improve the efficiency I think, in the same way it does before a planned charging stop. The brakes also take a bit of getting used to the ceramics do need warming up a bit after a long wet motorway journey. Keep up the good work, love the Chanel.

The I5 is amazing as a family run-about (shops, school run, odd day out), charged at home and offers amazing value for money. It actually replaced a Macan S (priced about the same without options) and as a "family work horse" the I5, for us, wins easy and our running costs have been massively reduced.
The manual 911 on the other hand is my fun exciting car for hunting B roads and the odd "driving" day trip.
Would I have an EV as my only car OR replace both cars with a Taycan? No, never, for every reason you highlighted. But I'd also struggle with a 911 as our only car. But that's why cars like the RS6, M3 touring, GTC4 Lusso, and EVEN the Panamera (which I tried and really didnt like) exist and are not EVs.

@@georgeholloway3981 Maybe see what happens to E-fuel or Hydrogen. I don't like the idea of needing an EV to get somewhere in an emergency and find its on 15%. While I find EVs very relaxing to drive, like many new cars they miss the theater of a performance ICE car that makes you want to drive for the sake of driving.

you're such a great and eloquent presenter, it's a joy to consume your content. now if only you could speak german, too. our presenters are rubbish, both on tv and yt, and i've been wondering for years as to why that is ... also i'm 29 and have never sat in an ev, let alone driven one. nobody among my family or acquaintances owns an ev. i reckon the acceleration would blow my mind. i'm shocked to see the state of the taycan's interior though. even if i had the money ... no ...

@@EvoraGT430it’s an SUV, I’d buy it for the practicality, height, luxury and it’s also the best handling of all suvs. But if I could afford one I’d have other cars for the driving experience. Like a 991.2 GT3
I owned a Taycan briefly but got rid of it as it failed and at the time Porsche didn't know how to fix it. There were no end of issues with early Taycans, but I think those have all been ironed out now (ignoring the heater issues that prevailed a few months ago). It is the best EV available today and this review gives a very good idea of what ownership is like. I might buy another now that they're more reliable, but there's no getting away from the fact they're very large and don't fit many UK parking spaces (true of Panameras and Bentleys etc too). I have a 992 version of the 911 currently and it suits me perfectly. The Taycan will probably depreciate less than the e-tron GT and who'd choose an Audi badge over a Porsche?
Apparently the Taycan's depreciation is not good at all. I've debated buying one (a cross turismo) a few years ago but couldn't get one, i did test drive one and i found the ride and feel very impressive. I went with the combination of a Ford F150 and a 911GT3 so you won't hear me complaining lol
@@milootje007 I've heard reports of people losing 50% of the car's value in less than a year, and apparently dealers are refusing to take any EV in part exchange as used examples just don't sell. This is pretty scary, no wonder people are so reluctant to buy into the whole EV thing.
When I had the Tesla Model Y it was costing me about £25 a time to charge for about 180 miles of range and the time was a joke at every point!

Currently looking to get solar installed on my house with a powerwall and an EV charger and without doing my research thought i could just have a 22kw charger and not have the issues you discussed
But not many houses if any have the 3 phase required for a 22kw charger
So 7kw is realistically the best home charging will be 😢
But every cloud and that could be the excuse i need to keep hold of my old 911 and use the EV ( still undecided wether it will be a taycan or a tesla) for the daily kid slugger etc

I think you probably have not spent enough time in this car James. They are amazing day to day. A few points, the Bose system, did you adjust any of the settings and equaliser? A few changes make all the difference. Journalists always rave about the Tesla sound system, which to be fair is pretty good, but the Bose isn't far behind at all and will be fine for most people (if you want quality, you go aftermarket and customise with far superior equipment than Bose or Burmeister). The interior is great, I am not sure if you just had a very poorly optioned one (if it had the GTS interior, it should be pretty good). I am lucky to have owned quite a few quality EV's or borrowed them and the Taycan is up there with the best of them in terms of quality. A few of the luxury EVs may be a bit higher quality Merc EQS etc, however they are aimed at a different market. Admittedly, you definitely need the panoramic roof and yes that lower screen is just useless. Not noticed many quality issues, the main thing I found is the headlights seem prone to small chips or a sandblasting look and driver seat has a squeak if fully lowered to floor. As a car though, I have not driven a better EV to date, the handling makes the Taycan stand out even if the tech is a little outdated compared to a Tesla.
A couple of years ago James, you did a review of a Lexus LS430. Based on this review I bought a 2005 model, which I love. The more I see reviews of these EV’s the more I prefer my old analog car. Simple, cheap to run and lovely. To me, EV’s are just Tatt.

My Cayenne Diesel S is so much cheaper to run. Easy to get in and out. Best interior on any Porsche and a range of 700+ miles. EVs are a lousy con, unless they’re very small and you travel 10 miles to work & back. Madness!
And let’s see how these perform, if they ever reach 140,000 miles. Which is what my faultless Cayenne has done. Good for the planet my posterior!

👏 Well done. First time I've heard the efficiency of EV's discussed in real terms and the issue of the 7kW wall charger limit.
It makes the point of a 90kwh battery less useful as anything over 42kW means it takes over 6hrs to charge and you'll be using expensive electricity.
This is one of the reasons I love my i3S REX that will genuinely do 4.5mi/kwh summer and 3.5-3.8mi/kwh winter. Without making any effort to drive efficiently beyond looking ahead and using regeneration rather than braking.. which I would anyway.
It can charge its 33kWh battery easily at night and at 7.5p it works out about 2p per mile or 1/5th the cost of running a diesel. I do less than 100miles daily so I run fully electric 99% of the time. If I have to drive 250miles in a day I run the on-board range extender and I generally get the equivalent to about a 70mpg petrol car by leaving 25% in the battery for comfort and doing the rest on petrol power.
It's also if anything MORE fun to drive than a Taycan even if I do love the power and grip in the Porsche. Generally I've been disappointed by them do far. BMW are way ahead
Too bad EVs are massively more expensive through all its secondary costs, and your tax bill as well as electricity prices as well as all price hikes due to the inflation EVs cause will cost you many times more than the difference in direct operating costs. EVs will basically bankrupt the nation...so your slightly cheaper electricity (because it's not taxed like fuels are) won't help you.
@pistonburner6448 I think of the many factors causing inflation, tax breaks on EV's are small and worthwhile part. Plus, inflation affects everyone equally, so I might as well lower my living costs.
Due to it being a primary sales driver, EV's are also manufactured with far greater consideration to lifecycle energy costs. There is fundamentally nothing stopping the manufacture of ICE cars being made a lot greener, but the motivation isn't there. So EV cars are actually making a much larger positive impact than their lack of tailpipe emissions.
However, you cannot escape the fact that in operation ICE cars are far less thermally efficient than EV's, the waste heat, lubricants such as oil and increased wear on mechanical components mean the cost to global resources for running ICE vehicles are unfortunately and enviably higher. Being untethered from a single energy source also means there is far more future opportunity to improve the efficiency of the energy used to power the vehicles.
I'm a petrol head, I love ICE cars and I own a Lotus I love and enjoy, but it's no hardship to do my dull, rush hour commute, in an EV and that's 9/10ths of the miles I do in a year. There are millions and millions of people who aren't petrol heads and still enjoy the luxury and freedom a vehicle provides. If we can reduce the energy it takes for us all to enjoy this luxury then we don't have to live in grass huts like hippies to be more in tune with our planet.

You even managed to add in that identifier of someone who has absolutely no clue about this subject, science, engineering, physics, chemistry, nothing: that mention of "efficiency" which is a nonsense false term only used by the ignorant. "Efficiency" is *_totally irrelevant_* , it's a totally unintelligent thing to even look at since there are *_only two factors_* which matter:
1. The overall CO2 emitted. This includes everything in energy production, manufacture of the car, all the surrounding infrastructure needed, use of the car, and end-of-life recycling.
2. Cost. This includes all the costs of subsidies, infrastructure, power plants, changes in tax revenue (ICE are cheap *_and_* generate massive tax revenue while EVs are the opposite: they require *_massive_* amounts of taxpayer money to aid them and despite that they're still massively more expensive)...
Those two factors are the *_only_* things that matter, and everything else is irrelevant. Well, the weight of EVs causes added road deaths and injuries, as well as road wear too, but let's keep to the basics and the core of the subject.

The economics for me are much better. I'm driving a BMW i4 in southern Europe, in hilly country. It's summer so temperatures are on the warm side (25-35c). I get 5.5km/kWh on a mix of town, country and motorway driving, and with charging at home at €0.14 per kWh, that works out to around €23 per 1000km. I'll soon have a solar PV and battery setup so the charging cost should drop to next to nothing for everyday driving. It's a lot cheaper than my diesel BMW 5. But I do drive with economy in mind.
You could get an LC500 for the same money. Actually the LC is cheaper.
Porsche have some cheek not to include half of those things as standards! No Folding dimming mirrors, no Bose. , jeeez.
Also at 2.3 tons with huge wide tyres, it's not surprising it has good traction.

So how much does the batteries cost to replace, after 8 years this car’s resale value are rubbish because you have to replace the batteries.
The power figures now are just silly especially when you consider how linear the delivery is too. Imo for me it’s way too much for the road to use it all safely and I o doubt many owners will take them on track.
They need to focus on range over performance, no one needs supercar acceleration in a daily EV, 200-220 miles is pathetic for such an expensive car. The Mercedes EQE/ S and obviously Eqxx are much much better.
@@ahemgee9542 yes there are better options in terms of range. However a lot of people don’t do many motorway trips and the ones I know of that do a few and can afford a taycan also have a few other cars. So the range thing to the majority of pope actually buying them isn’t an issue. For me I’ve tried EVs the quickest so far a Tesla model 3 dual motor and for me personally it was fun for ten minutes and then was just boring I couldn’t get over not having a proper V8 or similar soundtrack. Also the lack of gears and the build of tourqe as you rev the engine out is completely missing I just can’t gel with it in terms of a fun car. As stupid as it sounds I’d rather a Renault twizzy or similar to nip about town in and have my e46 328i and my x5 4.6is as my distance and fun cars
I had Bose in my MK1 TT and it was excellent. The speakers being made by…Bose. Apparently the latest ‘Bose’ setups don’t actually use Bose speakers! It’s just a Bose sticker on a cheap speaker. Take a grille off and have a look.

Don't, you will absolutely love it. The Taycan is probably the best all round EV out there and ticks almost every box. Hopefully you ticked the rear wheel steering though, as it really transforms the car (you will still think it is good without it though if you haven't driven one with it 🙂). Honestly, I have driven a number of EV's and this is the best so far that I have experienced.

If you really needong term reviews of the taycan Macmaster channel. He loves his milk float🤣 and does longer journeys. Also with your final to thought about it being a first attempt it seems like with all technology the best time to get into it is as late as possible. Used EV also sounds like it's not going to well either. Thankfully it's something I'll never need.
I have a Taycan Turbo and don't agree with your assesment of the car in general but I do agree that the brakes are weird. It feels like it's something to do with the point the braking it flips from regenarative to friction brakes. I had a Tesla before and they were far more progressive even though they were ultimately not as powerful.

My friend has a gts without the gts stitching, full black leather and I hate it. It’s like climbing into a coffin. Specially the back. They have the 2+2 which is worse than this one feels like two coffins side by side in the rear

I'm the owner of a GTS Sport Turismo in Norway. My summer consumption hovers around 3 miles per kWh with 21" wheels, winter (normally mild, 20" wheels around 2.5 miles. Probably less motorways than you did, that may make the difference,
Never mind calculating VED by engine size or emissions. Anything in the UK that is as wide as a Taycan (that isn't a bus or a lorry) should be punitively taxed.
So a Mk 3 Taycan in about 10 years time would be what to have then 👍

I think Porsche should replicate what they did in the Macan lineup for the Taycan and make the GTS the flagship (with the turbo s powertrain) it’s one of the cars where having so many trims doesn’t make sense . Taycan , 4 , 4s and GTS is enough especially as there aren’t really any major mechanical changes

Compare to the proprietary technology, packaging and economy in the Lucid Air. How much they offer a driver of a car of similar size and price, in term of everyday practicality (van levels of cargo space, leaving all wagons behind), rarely needing a charge, getting really far on the motorway, etc. But of course, start up company, so crappy software.

If I spent that much money on an interior which frankly looks like a £30-50k car I'd be seriously disappointed. What does it say that some people seem to care more about showing off a fancy electric Porsche than giving themselves a nice place to sit.
My results have been slightly different. "Lifetime" average of the 4S Cross Turismo is 2.9 miles per kW. I typically charge for free at work or at a Electrify America, but if I only charged at home, I pay $0.15 a kWh, so lets say I pay roughly $ .06/mile for fuel. With gas between $3.50 and $4.00 a gallon, I'd have to get 50-70mpg to spend the same as a gas car. I prefer my Taycan to any car that makes 50-70mpg.... and besides, I don't think anyone is paying $130k for a car to save money. Also, my brakes have no issues.
26:10 You mention 26 quid for 200 miles of range. What would the same mileage cost you in premium fuel for your Ferrari F12? Taycan GTS will _probably_ out accelerate your F12, and you can carry 4 people in it. Look, I understand that charging can be expensive, but people seem to overlook the performance of (high end) EVs.

At 110,000 miles on our 440 hp 2014 Tesla P85 performance, our ownership experience has been excellent, mainly because there are over 100 Tesla Super charging stations across the UK with over 1000 stalls, mostly charging at 150Kw and, because Supercharging is free for life on pre 2017 Teslas, it has been a zero cost for fuel. We have had to wait for a stall no more than half a dozen times, they always work and there is almost always a cafe for a cuppa. I reccon thats something like a £35,000 saving on petrol for a similaly sized car. Off to Rome next week...

Taycan is literally half the efficiency in terms of mi/KWh of a Model 3 due to (among other reasons) Porsche's inclusion of a 2 speed transmission in the rear drive unit. Taycan isn't intended to be a range champion. If you want that, drive a Lucid. EVs are really great for people who have chargers at home and work, but for city dwellers or people who can't modify their homes it's a much tougher proposition.
In terms of charging cost- this seems to be a UK specific problem because charging my Model 3 costs 10x less (normalizing for miles driven) than my gas vehicles.
The biggest problem, is that they made the car a 4/5 door. Had it been a 2 door, everyone would accept compromises like they do on say a Ferrari because that's a sports car. With the extra doors, everyone assumes you should be able to daily drive it, but that's not what it was built for, IMO.
Do you have any idea what percentage of the electricity you used to charge the car came from green sources?

The external trim is….absent. Look, I know I cannot have chrome, but polished stainless trims around the windows.
The range is half what I want. I do local plus cross country.
In cold conditions, range is down. In hot weather, battery life is reduced. Chemistry is a tough taskmaster. You do not argue with it.
