I keep coming back to this video every once in a while. First saw it back in 2006. Best distortion I ever heard even with the sub-par video quality. Petrucci's current rig doesn't hold a candle to how he sounded here.
I love that this video was shot pre-UA-cam by some rando just as a FanClub extra, because why not? Now fast-forward 15+ years and there is an entire genre on UA-cam of RigRundown videos.
Super nice guy. most guys are secretive about their rigs, JP is as open as can be. met him at a guitar show in Fl years ago and he was cool and very pleasant to everyone. insane talent!!
His main amps recently have been the Mark IV's and the Lonestar. On the TOT tour, it was Roadkings and Lonestars, Chaos in Motion tour was the Mark IV/Lonestar rig, Octavarium tour was the Roadkings for the first half, the second half of the tour was a custom IIC+ preamp through a rectifier poweramp (same rig that he used on Score). Six Degrees was the IIC+ rig. Hope that helps.
yep and the amp switcher also controls the rate of the earths revolution, the board actually is a pedalboard of death and the footstands release killer bees.
I have a IIC+ on the way right now believe it or not. I just bought it this week from a Guitar Center. It was used but looks like it sat under someone's bed for 20 years. Its in perfect condition. I also have a Mark IV, which I demo in my videos. I've also played my friend's Mark IIC++ before.
I played my first EBMM John Petrucci 6 in Graphite. Not a BFR, but doesn't matter. It BLEW ME AWAY. That guitar is better than my '58 Gibson Les Paul by far (and much cheaper as well). One of the best guitars I've ever played.
prolly because it's easier to reach higher frets, and it makes it easier to move your hand along the neck, because it helps take all the weight off of your fretting hand. or at least thats why i think...
@royeeeee I think he used a Randall before and around the 1st DT album. At least, to me, it sounds like a Randall RG100ES. He could also be seen using the Randall 4x12s for some early (1989) DT footage with a Mesa head. And the Road Kings actually are Dual Rectifiers, just a "spin-off" version like the Blue Angel. And I think on Awake, he used the rackmounted (discontinued) Dual Rectifiers.
So there might be a chance where some of the older marks would be back into production when the mark V comes out ?.. anyone know when the mark V might be coming out ?
It's just a really really big midi controller. Pretty cool though. I'm getting one when I get my amp that's just not as big. Behringer GMX212 and a FCB1010. Check 'em out.
+1. The IIC's are awesome, but the IIC+'s just flat out kick ass. If you ever have a chance to play one, I'm sure you'll love it. They sound amazing. By the way, last I heard, the IIC+ upgrade price got jacked up to $400 now.
I agree, i have listened to DT since the mid 90's and i never am disappointed by the new stuff from DT and Petrucci, Yngwie writes and sounds the same every single time.
well as far as affording all that...you either take your whole life to gradually buy it and then you just collect stuff...or in his caase...he is so good and he is in a band that is good so people just give him stuff..its amazing!
i knew he had a harmonizer in fatal tragedy. cus else is a very difficult bend ahhaah that made my day.. im going to play with my pedals a bit see if i could use that.
That sucks... i have never played a 2c or 2c+ but i know all about mesa boogies. I have played a Mark IV though. I have a DC-3 combo and have well had a triple rectifier stack... Do you have a 2c+?
Sometimes he toured with Mark IVs, sometimes ii c+s' he used Road kings other times. I think he's using the Mark V now. Did he ever use Rectifires. ( or anything other then mesa) I saw that dopey majesty vid, looks like he's playing through a Randall stack. He probably got it from his school.
heres the thing i wasnt talking about dream theater, at this point they are one of my favorite bands, someone brought up nu metal bands and european black metal, somehow my comment ended up on the front of the coments list
He has his strap tight with his guitar worn up high because that is right where the guitar would be against his body when he sits down and practice, which he's done alot of, and its more ergonomical
Gojira, Cannibal Corpse, Nile. 1,2,3 real metal bands. I see your point though, it's so much easier now just to get a Mesa, Krank or something to get a high-gain sound without having to OD the amp.
absolutely...he would sound great plugged into a cardboard box. I wosh more people would but lots of pros consider it a trade secret. try searching on here for big time players describing their rigs...very few.
just like KyleAtsWorld said... It was probably custom made for him, and pretty much any pedal company would jump on a chance to make a custom rig for him so he probably didnt have to pay a thing for it.
well technicly if you can see all my coments, you have seen the exact same vids i have because ive been looking at petrucci's rig videos and his tones, i didnt say one bad thing about Dream Theater, they are by far a favorite

Tony C me too
After 17 years I came back and have to admit: Still my favorite tone and rig of Petrucci and still my favorite Album of DT. The great decade :)
I love that this video was shot pre-UA-cam by some rando just as a FanClub extra, because why not? Now fast-forward 15+ years and there is an entire genre on UA-cam of RigRundown videos.
Love that effect! I watch this video every now and then, mostly for that part.
i love that crunch sound
IMO the best Petrucci tone ever! The thickest clean i've ever heard!
omg the echo of the Eventide is amazing! i can't belive it.

Good for you.
Wow nice set overthere!
awesome
yep and the amp switcher also controls the rate of the earths revolution, the board actually is a pedalboard of death and the footstands release killer bees.
Yeah, without a doubt his best tone.
I love this man _!
A Gear Heads Dream!!! Very cool

They usually play venues that are mind bogglingly huge. And still sell it out in a matter of a few days/weeks.
I played my first EBMM John Petrucci 6 in Graphite. Not a BFR, but doesn't matter. It BLEW ME AWAY.

He wears it high because it gives him better access to all the notes.
Thanks!
Omfg!! I want his setup!
I don't know too much, just seen the pictures on his homepage of the gear he was using on this album
john petrucci has the best rig ever
Blind Faith from Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (Disk 1). Love that jam!
@royeeeee

He's only using the AxeFX's for practice/warm-up backstage.
OMG, the tracklist is the tracklist of my dreams, a few songs from awake and will be perfect..... O.o
what kind of volume pedal douse he use? the ernie ball stereo?
So there might be a chance where some of the older marks would be back into production when the mark V comes out ?.. anyone know when the mark V might be coming out ?
Did they take the Mark series amps off production? Will it be back or anything? i was looking into getting a Mark w/e. but yeahh .. any ideas?
when he plays the intro the great debate with that angel echoes effect...fuck...incredible :)
his new rig consists of 4 Mark V's and a few Fractal AxeFX Ultra Model pre amp FX moddeling systems
have fun fitting it in your room, lol
but i def agree with you, this is an amazing setup
It's just a really really big midi controller. Pretty cool though. I'm getting one when I get my amp that's just not as big. Behringer GMX212 and a FCB1010. Check 'em out.
the best!
DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN GET A ROAD CASE LIKE THAT!
+1. The IIC's are awesome, but the IIC+'s just flat out kick ass. If you ever have a chance to play one, I'm sure you'll love it. They sound amazing. By the way, last I heard, the IIC+ upgrade price got jacked up to $400 now.
think he uses keeley modified Boss DS-1 pedals for boosting
nice!
have any idea how to get that?.. I looked and even the eventide doesn't come up with that..
"Angel Echoes" is a pretty cool sound!
holy shit, i want to know how to get some of these kick ass effects... they kick major ass
I agree, i have listened to DT since the mid 90's and i never am disappointed by the new stuff from DT and Petrucci, Yngwie writes and sounds the same every single time.

Petrucci is my God.
i know someone who used to have a badass MIDI rig like that, but he decided it wasnt worth it so now he just has pedalboard into his amp
i knew he had a harmonizer in fatal tragedy. cus else is a very difficult bend ahhaah that made my day.. im going to play with my pedals a bit see if i could use that.
5:37 to 5:50 is awesome
This rig sounds better than his modern one. JP2C is a fine amp but it's not a C+.
He uses a surprising amount of delay on that.
What pedal does he use? I've been meaning to find out for ages :(
2:37
I wish I had this gear :D
what's that riff at 3:06?
watching petrucci play is like crack to me
is he using a boss pedal?
is this guy for real? OMG do you really need all of this...
That sucks... i have never played a 2c or 2c+ but i know all about mesa boogies. I have played a Mark IV though. I have a DC-3 combo and have well had a triple rectifier stack... Do you have a 2c+?
thats a small venue?
very true, i play around that high as well, and as a result i am less likely to hurt myself. I don't expect to look cool anyway :)
Sometimes he toured with Mark IVs, sometimes ii c+s' he used Road kings other times. I think he's using the Mark V now. Did he ever use Rectifires. ( or anything other then mesa) I saw that dopey majesty vid, looks like he's playing through a Randall stack. He probably got it from his school.
hot damn
heres the thing i wasnt talking about dream theater, at this point they are one of my favorite bands, someone brought up nu metal bands and european black metal, somehow my comment ended up on the front of the coments list
WHY DOES HE NOT USE THIS RIG NOW ??!!
come on john just give me the rig please
petrucci is the fucking king ! the best tone for the greatest guitar player
Bugger off. Let us appreciate the music we like. IF you gave it a chance, you might like it.
He has his strap tight with his guitar worn up high because that is right where the guitar would be against his body when he sits down and practice, which he's done alot of, and its more ergonomical
it also controls the temperature of the sun, but he never uses it.
damn right stevies right
Also we were talking about "webbtje", his comment was. "Gojira, Cannibal Corpse, Nile. 1,2,3 real metal bands." which i think are aweful
most likely, yes.. but it's damn fun!
His good but his lead sound has to much delay but I dig his rhythm tone and his amps Mesa/Boogie MackII C+ i'd give anything to get my hands on one.
They are just working on the Mark V
if you get a IIC and dont like it you can send it into mesa boogie and they can change it to a IIC+ for like 200 bucks.
holy shit
Dont know why... I've always liked his Mark IIC tones the best. his triple rec and road king tones sound a little too compressed.
yeah, lol.. thanks 4 the tip dude.
capton kirk was
Gojira, Cannibal Corpse, Nile. 1,2,3 real metal bands. I see your point though, it's so much easier now just to get a Mesa, Krank or something to get a high-gain sound without having to OD the amp.
What year is this?
2002
That made me laugh for some reason.
absolutely...he would sound great plugged into a cardboard box.
I wosh more people would but lots of pros consider it a trade secret. try searching on here for big time players describing their rigs...very few.
some people say november.
just like KyleAtsWorld said... It was probably custom made for him, and pretty much any pedal company would jump on a chance to make a custom rig for him so he probably didnt have to pay a thing for it.
Angel Echoes = Not meant to be heard by mortal ears.
The JP6 Mystic Dream is gorgeous than the BFR..for me
yeah, his rig at the mo is incredible, although i way WAY prefer the mkIIc+ to the road kings. Never liked the sound of rectifiers.
Virtuoso*
Hu its that sound in the minute 2:37
Haha Hear mike portnoy zipping around on an electric scooter.
Petrucci's tone is godly.
Really? Well, that's news to me. Thanks.
what kind of shoes are those mr. petrucci? haha=)
so do I!!
dry and agressive!!
well technicly if you can see all my coments, you have seen the exact same vids i have because ive been looking at petrucci's rig videos and his tones, i didnt say one bad thing about Dream Theater, they are by far a favorite
cough-stalker-cough!
excuse me.
is he.. on a scooter?
No hes not over-rated. Hes rated just fine. I consider himself right at the top as a vituoso
Ha...he's wearing bowling shoes...that rules.
