      So true. We did the same for the roofers when they were at our house for the week, which they loved. It's horrible that some people can be so snooty; not even allowing the tradesmen to use the bathroom, never mind not making them so much as a hot cup of tea on a cold day.

      If I was working for all kinds of people who I didn’t know, I would prefer to bring my own lunch, as I wouldn’t know how these people’s kitchens are, if they were clean etc. I mean, not everybody keep their kitchens like Becky’s… 😉🤗☺️

    Great update. Side note: If you build the walkway up to meet the porch you will create an acessibility feature for friends and family for years to come. Likewise with the stairs at the back. A sloped ramp makes bringing produce to the house easier too. Universal design works for everyone. :)

    You could always use all of those rocks you’re keeping to make a rockery herb garden. My grandparents had one the large rocks have a great way of naturally separating the herbs, giving them their own individual space. During the day, the large rocks take on the sun and heat up and release that heat at night to protect the plants a little from the cold. The large rocks also stop the sun from drying out the soil and a lot of insects and earth worms love being under large rocks most of these little critters are good for the garden. My grandmother also used to step on them to get to all the different herbs. And it’s done correctly, It can be very aesthetically, pleasing and natural, looking to the eye.

You are such an inspiration to so many people In the simple ways of living and growing your own food and it almost takes me back to the times when my mother and my grandmother were home cooks and Home gardeners and they would grow flowers and we always have beautiful flowers within our home and in our yard to enjoy. •  Рік тому +6

    Agree with you about locating your chickens close to the garden... not only do the chickens get all the garden scraps, but they're also producing rich compost & manure for the garden. It's a matter of logistics of cycling from seed to chicken poo all these materials used to produce food for your table and also supplementing the chicken feed. The aim is to produce a near-closed loop which builds a living farm soil.
    Becky, Michigan Pasties can be frozen (your worker guys might like that). You don't have to use the lard-boiling water recipe for pasty crust, regular flaky pie crust works just as well. I wish more people knew about pasties, they're so good!

    •  Рік тому +1

      @@kristenevans4557 I've made them with ground beef, ground beef & pork mixed, cubed beef steak, ground bison, ground venison... my favorite is bison, but you need to add pats of butter into each pasty when you use lean meat. I don't use precooked meat, it cooks in the pasty for 45-60 minutes.
      In college there was a place in town (Marquette, MI) that made many varieties of very unconventional pasties... some were like pizza, others were like tacos, some were vegetarian, etc. I prefer the regular kind. 😁

    I’m so glad that you’re giving yourself a break when it comes to projects having a perfect home is great but unrealistic they are always a work in progress. It’s nice for your friends and family to see that you are comfortable enough to share your journey w the house and garden it decreases the expectations when you come to visit them that everything doesn’t need to be perfect.
    Soon you’ll have a toddler and they are like a whirling dervish making messes in there wake so get ready for the new adventure.💞

    I think your idea of having the chickens closer to your garden would benefit you the most and I agree, planting the herbs closer to the house will give you easier access and your son can bring in herbs, when he grows up, to help mommy cook.

      @suzanneosio7596 Рік тому +1

      I look at it this way, not only can you go from house to greenhouse and not go out in nasty weather to tend to the plants, but it’s easier to carry down flats of plants ready to plant than lugging bales of soil, larger pots to replant in, and other things down needed to start seedlings and keep them growing until planting. And you can add electricity in case there’s a cold spell and you need to heat the greenhouse.

    You are so lucky to be able to afford professionals doing your landscaping. In Australia such a large landscaping job would cost around $50,000. Took us years to complete our landscaping without professionals, sadly we could not afford extending our home loan.

    WOW!!! What an amazing transformation. I'm sure it's costing a fortune to do all of that, but you're laying the foundation for your entire homestead with all this work. It's going to be incredibly beautiful AND functional. Would you mind sharing the landscape architect you used? Incredible progress...and I bet those guys are REALLY appreciating all those fabulous treats!
    Nothing wrong with all those stacked stones. Hope they were recycled/reused by someone vs ending up in a landfill.
