The fact that no cgi was used for the transformation was brilliantly done. With flashes, cuts, and great acting really made this transformation "Extrodinary".
it was very mid, though i do appreciate practical effects.
I guess you don't need to use cgi if you can't see shit.
I think it was mainly practical effects with cuts, which I appreciate be nice to see more practical effects
In the DVD commentary they allude to the budget of the Hulk which also came out that year to be around 20 million for the CGI alone. This movie was done on a shoestring. Connery spent his last movie fighting incesently with the director. Its a wonder that it got made at all. For what it's worth I think the effects are charming.
It would be better if it were extraordinary
I love how shaken and exhausted Dr. Jekyll is following the transformation
Imagine the trauma and damage such transformation would actually have on your body
The original hulk, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
imagine dante if he was not dead
@@dallaskoivu502Fun fact, characters Bruce Banner and Hulk were actually inspired by aspects of Jekyll and Hyde.
@@jexelbur6872 correct and true
And the mind...
I know everybody hated this movie, but I absolutely loved it.
Only Moore Puritans hate it. The average moviegoer loves it.
@@Shanethefilmmaker eh, I'm really into Moore's books, but I still enjoyed the heck out of this movie.. I just treat them as entirely separate things in my mind.. Like Reeves' Constantine movie, it works much better if I just forget about the comics while watching..
@@johnbaboso9860 to me they're just interpretations. Good or bad they did things their way. Case in point Batman 1989. They changed it so the Joker killed his parents and Kane's response was "Why didn't we think of that?" In the case of Constantine, they made him an Exorcist rather than a master of magics.
That said I think it's messed up that of all the stories Moore didn't put his name on in the adaptations, the Justice League version of "For the Man Who Has Everything" is the only one he allowed, even though they changed a lot.
Liked it myself
Me too
Bri'ish Hulk😂

@@victorhernandez5013 I appreciate it lol. I love doing accents even in text lol
The sorrow and sad resolve in his voice when he says, "Dr Jekyll...at your service..." is absolutely perfect.
His introduction was the best.
Watch "North and South", the duel-scene. The way Patrick Swayze says "att youur serrrvice" is so bad ass.
Jason Flemyng is great actor
The Avengers: "We have Hulk"
The League: "We have Mr. Hyde"
Who wins in a fight? I'm going with "Hulk"
Deadpool: A carbinadium blade for both!
LotR: "They have a cave troll"
@@benjamintribe4652I'm with you, though it greatly depends on the interpretation Hulk's strenght is always "incredible", as in "it defies what can be understood or believed". Hyde is strong, really strong, but Hulk is so strong he can bend reality and crunch fear into awe (did you know Hulk canonically "grows" new powers as he needs? He got the power to see into the astral plane because he was afraid his father's ghost might come to haunt him, that's why he can see Dr. Strange in astral travel)
Whether Hulk wins or not... he's still inspired by Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
The transformation back to Dr Jekyll looks immensely painful, similar to the transformation into a Werewolf in American Werewolf in London. Horrid but amazing.
Fucking yes...okay? 100% goddamnit. Well stated and referenced. On the fucking money
@@jamespickhardt8367 Do you by any chance have Tourette's? That's about ten times the profanity I use when I'm pissed off 🙃😅😝
nowhere near
1:14 and the ten seconds following it are my favorite ten seconds in the movie. I love the exchange between Sawyer and Hyde, plus Quatermain’s look of respect at Hyde. He recognizes Hyde as someone who understands the hunt, just like him.
The only person in that room that probably didn't 'stink of fear' to Hyde, was Quartermain. What would he fear, when he knows that he will always come back? Even Dorian Grey was nervous, in spite of his immortality. Probably because he still feared experiencing pain, even if it couldn't kill him.
Back when practical effects were allowed to shine
What practical effects. Mr Hyde is so clearly CGI
That’s not true actually. If you watch the special features on the original DVD, they show how Hyde’s painstaking make up and prosthetics are applied before each take. The visual of special effects is most likely the interaction of him slapping around the Nautilus’ grunts. However the stand alone Mr Hyde is actually practical.
@@kyleshalongo1789In certain scenes he is indeed CGI. In this one he isn’t. This film is aging very well considering the shite that Hollywood is pumping out.
@@h.d.5194 prove it

Nice 👌
Nah it was 🗑️
Did you guys notice the steam (heat) coming out of Hyde's body as he transform back to Jekyl (from 1:30 to 2:13)? That's simple but very effective method of special effect without the use of CGI.
And the a moment of silence of the crew after witnessing the transformation. Showcasing their disbelief and shock of why someone could be willing to undergo such transformation in name of Science.
It also scientifically makes sense, as mass mitosis produces heat.
Reminds me a bit of that one lore line in dead space that says the bodies smoke as they change due to the blood becoming so hot inside their veins that it practically flash boils.
If you read "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" by Robert Louis Stevenson (who also wrote "Treasure Island, if you're interested), you'd understand why someone would undergo such a transformation.
When a vampire is so horrified, it's speechless 😂
The transformation is so grotesque, he kinda looks like the elephant man in-between stages of the transformation. It shows the pain he endures changing back.
I don't understand why so many people hate this movie. I've loved watching it for most of my life. I wanna watch it right now.
The film is so bad Connery retired from acting. I own the film. I enjoyed it well enough as a teenager. As an adult? I definitely understand why it was and is reviled.
Jason Flemyng is a very underrated actor.
He was Azazel in Xmen a major franchise
That’s not being underrated
i love the pride Nemo shows when he flexs the nautilus
He can be damn proud. This vessel is a wonder.
I still remember reading about him in the book, "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" by Jules Verne. Great character and great book. 💯👌
"Stay back if you value your life!"
Everyone around him proceeds to be knocked down.
when even the Vampire is mortified, you know youre scary AF..
Dr. Jekyll at your service
Dr. Sneckell more like, am I right?
Just goes to show that practical effects stand the test of time. Two decades old and it still looks phenomenal and lifelike. Not like the CGI- garbage that's vomited on every single movie today.
not sure we watched the same movie then, this movie is filled with CGI -garbage and also the dreaded shaky cam
What practical effects. This is clearly CGI. You will find any reason to praise old stuff and criticize the new
they have like 400 asian technical artists in a bunker somewhere and they just work them to death, mostly on the Marvel crap.

Loved this movie when I was younger. And I love the graphic novel it was based on.
Seriously underrated film ❤
Someday this actor will get the recognition he deserves. I always like seeing him in films.
This movie needed to be its own franchise now and deserves a reboot.
A tv series would better suit the franchise. Slow it down and allow the audience time to experience the characters more intimately. Aside from readers of classic literature, most of the modern audience don’t know these characters within fiction.
the best thing to honor this movie... is to NOT give it a reboot... -.-
It doesn't just deserve a reboot, it deserves the _perfect_ one. Just like Watchmen.
@@WestLegend03What was wrong with Zach Synder’s Watchmen? I loved that movie.
@@WestLegend03 yes, leave it alone Hollywood
i love how grotesque and painful the transformation looked wish theyd do that with the hulk ang lee came close to showing how painful and scary transforming would be
I like how Connery's native accent slightly shows itself when he raises his voice
This was a greatly under appreciated movie. Could have been a really good series of movies based on characters from British novels.
Why'd people hate on this movie? It's an absolute gem
This movie was ahead of it's time
Nice to see I'm not the only one who loved this movie, yes it was almost universally panned including Sean Connery and Alan Moore but I thought it was great.
Jason Flemyng and practical effects made this an amazing scene.
Mr Hyde must’ve never heard of leg day.
geniunely such a good effect.
2:25 I've read the book and this Jekyll is different from the original source material, of course. But I still gotta wonder why the hell he would continue to use the formula if it put him through that kind of hell?
Because he's an addict. The very same thing could be said for many other forms of addiction.
Did you read the comics on which this movie was based? Quite different but I wasn't disappointed on seeing this film, either...except perhaps making Mina Harker a vampire and not the leader as she is in the comics
@@BimfirestarterI think he is talking about the original Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde novel.
in which Mr Hyde was a little evil dude
with no super powers and was more a way for Jekyll to indulge in his "urges"
The part where he says “YOU STINK OF FEAR” just hits so hard for me, it’s like he’s saying he can see right through his calmness and he can tell he’s scared. And I got to admit, I was pretty stinky with fear when I first saw that transformation.😱
yeah...the movie kind of skips over how Hyde is actually dominant and the potion to turn him back is only temporary. that was the whole PROBLEM in the book you see...Hyde started to come out on his own.
In the movie, it's the other way around. The potion releases Hyde.
@@johnnyd1824 the movie takes a LOT of liberties with the lore in comparison to the original literary sources in general and the comic in particular. having Dorian Grey killed by just LOOKING at his painting. absolute hogwash? it was explicitly stated in the book that DESTROYING the painting was what broke the enchantment. and don't get me started on what they did with Mina harker and the Invisible Man. Then again, i can't exactly see a modern filmmaker having the stones to have Hyde rape the invisible man to death for daring to hurt the very human Mina. "the one person in all the earth that was genuinely not afraid of him" (becasue she had encountered far WORSE than hyde)
He's also smaller than Jekyll
@@shawnbass-ig2bv that's actually mentioned in the comic version..Hyde says tha tonce, he was smaller..but he got BIGGER over time. he admits that Jekyll "likely kiled us both" as by the end, Jekyll is far to tremulous and weak to even manifest anymore.
@@alexsolomon8127 the book took liberties as well, the original story of Dorian was that looking at the picture would break the enchantment because it shows his true age and it horrifies him. The enchantment breaks and ages Dorian instantly to death just like the movie.
Looks far realistic than recent Hulk renders in movies. 😅
How tho? Even davy jones looks better than hulk renders! Is it effects team relying too much on cgi?
@@alceusrydan6237 They relied more upon practical effects than CGI. CGI wasn't great at that time neither. And practical effects will always look better than cgi.

Love this movie!!!
One of my favorite movies
This, along with Ghost Rider 2007 have 2 of the most painful, epic and violent looking transformations Ive seen in a movie...
"If I am Chief of Sinners than I'm the chief of Sufferers also" i don't know if anyone has read these classics but i actually find it more appealing and interesting to know those times and the creations of that era. By far I've read 20000 leagues under the sea and Strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde so I don't think this movie will be less familiar to me. People might've didn't liked because they didn't knew the hidden meanings, but i quite the fancy of the idea of putting together the most famous classic characters into one canvas. And I can't thank them more for casting Nasiruddin Shah one of the versatile legendary Bollywood actors as Captain Nemo...
Naseeruddeen Shah ❤
One of my favorites
It's fair to say this is one of the best special effects scenes in the industry.
Dr Jekyll can't not control his other half Mr Hyde
Jason Flemyng is such a great and versatile actor
i love this show!

To think that people spend hours on practical effect for a few seconds of transformation shows how much dedication they had for the movie

The Tank from Left4Dead finally got himself a movie.
Jeckyl & Hyde was a tragic character in the book version. Dr. Henry Jeckyl sought to chemically separate the "Light Side" of Human Nature, his Nature, from the "Dark Side", believing that by getting rid of the Dark what was left would be virtually Angelic. And what was the "dark side" of his nature? He sometimes masturbated, and frequently thought of other men while doing it, and that was about it, he was as Hyde described him a self-conscious puritan afraid of his own erections. According to the comic book when Jeckyl first turned into Hyde Jeckyl was a tall, strapping man while Hyde was a viscous little Dwarf, but in very short time Jeckyl began to shrink while Hyde grew into an Ogre. Classic Yin/Yang: both sides needed each other to survive, separating them was slowly destroying them both, without the Dark Jeckyl had no drive, and without the Light Hyde had no limitations, eventually Jeckyl would fade from existence and Hyde would become a mindless animal.
Its funny how his upper body grows a hundred times BIGGER, while his legs and feet stay the same. 2:14 He doesnt even grow out of his shoes or pants like the HULK. Its like he missed leg days in the gym all his life. You gotta admit he is funny looking.
behind the scenes featurette was interesting on how they fitted the prosthetics for the actor, who plays both Jekyll and Hyde. I think it's Jason Flemyng?
Yes 👀🔥🔥👀
I’ve read the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde book recently. It’s good.

I love the idea that Tom Sawyer grew up and became a Secret Service agent , even if the timeline doesn't quite add up. I read that Alan Moore hated his addition to the movie , but audience polls showed Tom was one of the favorite characters.

This movie so underrated would be cool if they did a second part nowadays or a remake 🔥🔥
The tank from Left 4 Dead right here
My brain always made me think that this dr hyde and the one from Van Helsing were the same for some reason, like it was a continuation of the same character
Knowing who Mr Hyde is up to this date. I think they should have left Mr Hyde. more hideous, Instead of trying to make Mr Hyde like the Hulk
I actually enjoyed this movie.
This movie was a damn good movie
I liked this movie.

Hyde does a lot worse to Griffin in Volume II of the Graphic Novel. So Dorian’s return quip “Better me then him,” got a good laugh outta me.

Mr. Hyde isn't suppose to be a hulking monster; he is supposed to be smaller than Dr. Jekyl.
