The letters on crochet hooks were in use way before the mm sizes were used. I have been crocheting for 60+ years and plain numbers were for steel hooks and letters used for aluminum hooks.
I worked on a dog blanket while watching! I agree that some newer crocheters act like they invented the craft, poor dears. I’m also peeved by expensive patterns being poorly written, or expensive items coming apart far too easily. But I love seeing the younger generations getting into yarn craft, and how easy it is to find quality crochet content!
I love how many people are falling in love with crochet. I just don’t like when people act all knowing about crochet. I have been at it for almost 15 years and will still admit there are tons of things I don’t know
I agree on pattern ideas. I want to see actual pattern being made and then have your honest opinion on it instead of just saying "hey try this but I would near do it myself"
For squeaky yarn, I've heard that running it through your hair works. The natural oils in your hair will make the yarn slide over the hook more smoothly, eliminating the squeak
I don't mind videos where they haven't tried it ONLY because I am the WORST with following patterns so for me I need to like look at stuff and then just trial and error it anyways, but definetly for people who are amazing with patterns, I think it is important to know what you're recommending for those who WANT TO FOLLOW. Definetly an odd corchet gray area
Hey, sensory issues and things that aggravate those sensitivities are really important, both for your own comfort and even your own health sometimes! I can't count the amount of times my own sensitivities helped me avoid something that, once I stopped avoiding it, gave me lots of issues, a great example being scented detergents for clothes being overpowering for me and then finding out that my skin does much better with the unscented version
Your gripes are very relatable, so no need for canceling! Lol jk I'm working on a doily for my wedding while watching this and my specific gripe is that it is sooooo hard to find ergonomic solutions for the Itty bitty steel hooks. Everything is for like 2.5mm and up! I've finally just wrapped them in some duct tape for the time being, but these wedding doilies are going to send me! Thanks also for the crochet pain tips video, some of your suggestions are honestly saving me! ❤
I saw elsewhere on UA-cam that a lady used shelf liner cut in an elongated triangle so I plan to use it on some of my grandmother's steel hooks. I'm in my 70s and just starting crochet. Sorry I did not start this when my grand was still alive. She did doilies and tablecloths also. Won't have time until after the holidays to try the shelf liner so sorry.
I’m working on a cardigan while watching. I so understand how you feel about the sensory issues with hooks. I have some with seams and I can crochet with them for about five minutes before I have to switch. I’ve never been a pattern tester but wouldn’t mind trying. If you need a tester, I’m willing!
8:36 I feel you on hook “feel”! I’m an AuDHD crocheter and when I use my one Clover hook I have to crochet knife grip (I’m typically pencil) because I HATE the feeling of their cut labels specifically
I was making a cardigan with Lion Brand's ice cream yarn and every skein had multiple factory knots. One actually came undone while working, giving me an extra couple ends to weave in. I wasn't actually that frustrated though. Nothing compares to the nightmare of trying to get a mess of yarn barf into workable yarn.
I sew with acrylic on all my plushies. A tighter stitch and no problems breaking. Cheaper also. I've never had a problem with eyes. I order all eyes from 6060eyes, or some name similar. I'm working of curls for a Unicorn. Some people that's all there channel is about. Showing ideas without even the pattern. They know that they will get tons of likes. They probably don't even crochet 😂
Working on an elephant lovey. My top pet peeves you mentioned are the factory knots and people suggesting patterns they haven't tried. Love your videos!
Tulip red hooks without question are my absolute favorite. They are so smooth. I work up things 2 to 3 times faster. I don’t work toys very much. I mainly make garments and shawls so the speed can matter, especially when I’m using a really splitting bamboo yarn, the rarely splits with the smooth red hooks.❤
you are SO right about premier chenille yarn!!!! say it louder!!! i absolutely hate working with it, and only have had to because the colors i needed for my spider gwen plushie is only carried by premier.
I have a similar pet peeve with pattern testing except from the tester perspective. I don't use social media, like at all. I don't use Insta, twitter/X, facebook, or reddit. The only "social" media I really use is UA-cam and a bit on Ravelry (but I use Ravelry more for pattern searches than the social aspect). So even though I would love to do pattern testing for people, I basically can't because everyone wants their pattern posts "boosted" by their testers. So not only are the pattern writers getting (usually) free testers, but they are using their testers as free advertising (or I guess it could be thought of as a trade of giving away the pattern in exchange for the advertising, but still). It feels scummy and gross. Now I totally understand that this is **not** an issue with the pattern writers themselves, but rather the "algorithms" that drive everything, but from the perspective of someone who just loves crochet, has years of experience doing it, and would be willing to give polite, tactful feedback on patterns, I basically can't and it's frustrating.
I totally get that. I don’t give a flip if people who test for me have social media. Maybe I should do a call out here on UA-cam on my community tab? Keep an eye out because I am always looking for quality testers.
9:47 THANK YOU! When I first started crocheting I was looking for easy recommendations and kept coming across videos telling me what I could make, but not how beginner friendly it was, because they hadn't made the thing either. It got sort of discouraging after awhile. I was working on dinner, but I'm going to go upstairs and work on a Bumble plush for a friend. I've never seen the movie it's from and I have no clue what the character is like, which is a stumbling block for me. Everything I crochet is an idea out of my head (character wise, NOT pattern wise. I need those) and has a pretty detailed story behind it. So making something I have no connection to is hard to start.
I was working on a beer cozy for my dad. For the squeaky yarn, I would switch the type of hook. If you are using a smooth metal hook, a brushed metal or wooden hook might stop the squeak.
For the hooks with ridges and bumps on the handles... you can use sandpaper if you have it (or a nail file if you don't) to smooth them off. I've done it several times to save a hooks I really like but were a sensory nightmare. I would recommend sanding it with a rougher grit to remove the bumps and then a finer grit to smooth everything out. It works on most materials and saves you from wasting a perfectly good hook!
There used to be a great pattern testing community on Ravelry, but closed it down a few years ago. It was posted that they weren't sure if it was permanent or not, but so far hasn't reopened.
Working on a shawl while watching. My biggest pet peeve is suggesting a pattern they haven't tried themselves. It goes into the issue of crochet terms not being uniform. Another pet peeve is improper tutorials. Sometimes I'm more focused on my work and the person forgets to mention a change, increase or decrease.
I think the most successful pattern testing calls are when you have people sign up on a mailing list specifically for pattern testing calls. Several of the people I've tested for and that I follow and apply for testing do it this way. They post about it on Instagram and whatnot, but they have a link where you can sign up to be notified of future tests as well. I also used to find tests on Ravelry and Facebook groups seem to go well, and even when the testers were found elsewhere the designer has a group specifically for that test on one of those platforms. And one of my pet peeves are designers using the exact same body pattern, changing the ears and color of yarn, and charging $7 or $8 for the pattern. When I was a new crocheter, I didnt understand thats how it worked, nd then once I did figure it out I felt kind of exploited by the woman I was buying tons of patterns from. I dont know if there's really a good solution for this, but I guess I just expect a little more work on the part of the designer that just a new pair of ears or something, you know?
I was working on starting a knit sweater while watching this video. My biggest crochet pet peeve right now is when I am trying to find patterns for fingering or sport weight yarn. It's not that that difficult but it's a bit harder when I am looking for items that are like the things that are trendy right now like tops and shirts
I am SHOCKED by how few people talk about the big twist super plush chenille because of how incredibly strong it is. I only just recently started using it but in all the plushies with all the sewing I've done, I've never had it break and it doesn't even shed at the ends so I don't have to melt the ends. It's also super fluffy and soft! Also I'm pretty cheap, but I tend to buy all my bulk safety eyes from aliexpress; they're cheap, you can get bulk of one color, and I personally haven't gotten any scratched ones in yet
pleasseee do a video on the pattern testing drama; people on r/craftsnark talk about it all the time because the demands for pattern testers seem to be getting weirder and weirder every day
I would love to see on video on chenille yarns. I bought some at Dollar Tree that was so pretty and soft, and then I started making a little Dino with it and wanted to throw it in the garbage. Sewing the pieces was maddening!
Yeah the dollar tree stuff is not for the faint of heart lol. I do work with it but I know I’m gonna be attaching another yarn to sew with. I might make a video soon. I do have a few other chenille yarns I want to try first
Not sure what I’m working on. I got pretty rainbow yarn, made a large granny square and then started making the sides longer than the height. I think maybe a shlanket? Who knows, I’m a process crocheter rather than a product one, so as long as my fingers are moving I’m happy.
I appreciate your integrity especially when you’re sacrificing views. I saw a crochet video where the creator was frustrated that they use the pattern recommended by “a prominent” crochet influencer and the actual pattern was very poor. Those videos are also not for me because when I watch them I go straight into overwhelm. Like you, I already have soooo many ideas, adding more is hard for my brain.
@@LennyLefebvre-qb6qx yeah I feel like a lot of times they just see a cute design and recommend it but there’s so much more to a pattern than just a cute design.
I worked on putting away laundry and pulling my dragon out that I started yesterday. One of my biggest pet peeves is how drastically differently patterns can word their stitches. I have multiple books and they all have 2 or 3 different ways of stating the exact same stitch. For me it's super annoying and makes me second guess myself a little bit that I'm doing the right stitch when I know for a fact that I am
Some people do recommend things they’ve tried but some don’t and I just could never. I like actually making the patterns and talking about the process.
I'm in a decent sized crochet group on facebook and recently saw someone asking for the amount of instagram followers to qualify for their pattern testing. Like what? They said they wanted people with 1000 followers minimum!! I have pattern tested before for a lot of different types of crochet artists and they never asked about follower count so I was kind of shocked to see that. I was finishing a character from a new crochet book I got, and honestly don't have many crochet pet peeves except maybe closing a magic circle with chenille yarn
I am new to crocheting, less than a year, and I would love to pattern test, especially for new crocheters. I don't have instagram though. I agree with you that limiting pattern testers to one platform seems to be counterproductive.
I have one Tulip hook, the 3mm size, and it immediately rubbed me wrong with that embossing so you are not the only one! The Clover Amours also have embossing but it’s not on the sides so it doesn’t rub me at all. I’m just gonna stick with the Clover amours cus I have had no issues with them.
I was working on knitted socks for my niece for Christmas. OMG my biggest petpeeve is factory knots. Other than that my controversial one is how people price their handmade items. If you can charge $100 for a scarf in your area I'm happy for you, but where I live they won't sell if they're over $30. Then people blame me and say that I'm reason they can't charge more! Can we all just agree that pricing varies depending on where we live? I'm so happy for people who live in rich areas and charge high amounts, but I live in a middle class area and I can only go so high before it's too expensive for the people in my area.
Rolling some yarn in to a ball and my biggest one is..when people don't know the worth or what it takes to do this .. and also that no one gets excited about what I do or like what I have made them ..
Safety eyes in general are a huge pet peeve of mine. The washers never fit right, I have to spend extra time stuffing around them, and they end up looking terrible on everything I put them on. Everyone else's amigurumi looks great with safety eyes so I'm sure its user error on my part, but I am content to just embroider eyes.
I come from a mainly knitting background, but I've dabbled in crochet just enough. I figure if I can understand a crochet pattern it is written well. I enjoy making amigurumi because the patterns are usually easy enough for me to follow and the plushes can be quick to make. Funnily enough I don't think I've encountered squeaky acrylic yarn yet. IG Algorithms ... I appreciate that people are getting more vocal about how busted it is. I found you on IG before I found out you have a channel. I wish I remembered how you showed up on my feed over there. I clicked subscribe because I enjoy seeing all the adorable pieces you craft.
I'm currently making a seven pointed star blanket in autumn leaf colors for my younger daughter. I already made one for my older girl, in pinks, purples and blues. I inherited my husband's aunt's yarn stash, because her arthritis keeps her from crocheting, and I'm having fun coming up with projects I can use her old yarn for.
I’m working on a knit cardigan for my 6 year old right now. My biggest crochet pet peeve is when a pattern goes viral and I finally care and decide to make it, only to find a terribly written pattern 😂 Oh and about the pattern testing, it’s been a while but I remember ravelry used to have some groups for matching designers with testers.
For squeaky yarn I keep a small bar of soap next to me and rub it on the needle lightly for a second and it stops the squeak and makes it smell nice! I havent noticed it leaving any kind of residue and I’ve been doing it for over a year now!
I was working on Frosty The Snowman (a pattern from Hobbii). The pattern itself is super simple however it's my first time using ribbon yarn and it's such hard work! But I've got to plough on with it as I brought lots of yarn to make them as Christmas presents. Oh well I might end up with sore fingers at the end but it's working my muscles so I might have buff arms 😄 I also had an issue with the seams on the Boye Ergonomic hooks, had to send them back as they were making my hand go numb. If you want any pattern testers in the new year I can help you out. I don't have Instagram though, so unless it's on here, I won't see a request. Well done for not recommending any patterns you haven't tried yourself 👍
I’m working on a mosaic blanket. My pet peeve is designers that are all too glad to sell you their pattern but when you need help, they are no where to be found. I only buy patterns from well established designers. AND I’ve learned that most of the “free” patterns are shit. Too bad, cuz if their free pattern is that bad I’m certainly not going to buy their patterns!
I don't mind pattern roundups since I am always looking for inspiration. What I DO NOT like is the ones where the UA-camr leads you to believe that they've tested it when they really haven't. I called out a big UA-camr for this and, would you believe it, I got no response! I had specifically chosen that video because of its deceptive title. Normally I don't watch this person because I find her personality to be too saccharine and fake. Lesson learned. I was working on a 'Trunk the Turtle' for upcoming markets while watching your video. I also don't like sponsored yarn (and other merchandise) review videos. They just feel like ads to me.
Oh no. I try not to be too click baity with my thumbnails and titles but sometimes it’s the only way to get people to click! I was thinking of doing a recent favorites video next. I hope it doesn’t feel too much like an ad 😬
@@Tfwcrochet I like learning about favourites that are not sponsored by a company. The Temu hauls, thermal printers, etc. are the ones that I don't care for. The Temu hauls are the worst because the person hasn't even tried them out and it advertising for them. A video entitled "10 Summer Crochet Best Sellers that ACTUALLY sell when it’s HOT!" led me to believe that the suggested patterns are tried and true. Not true at all. This was a lie, as far as I was concerned. Your titles and thumbnails are accurate and fun.
@ I totally see where you’re coming from. here’s a secret: those companies reach out to us smaller creators and offer free product in exchange for a video. I did one for a kit but found it wasn’t worth it so I deny all those now. It’s not worth sacrificing the trust I’ve built with my audience to recommend products I don’t really like.
Working on a mosaic technique square from tl yarn crafts. I would like to be a pattern tester. I seen them. and I love review of different yarns. it makes me learn more. I also would consider a Facebook group or an app catered to pattern testers and designers.
oh im so happy to just freehand everything because patterns, especially free ones, can be so tricky, you trust it, you read it through you work along, and it just doesn't work out, and you search for your mistake and find a mistake in a pattern, but your negative comment is overflown by comments like "pattern seems easy to understand!!"
I guess on the knots i understand because i worked in a carpet factory where we wound up the yarn for the carpet. If you knew the process, you would understand.
I was working on making a makeshift granny square blocking board and my biggest pet peeve in crochet is the tutorial videos people make that either go too fast, block what their doing, or dont explain when the video is marked beginner friendly! I was scared to start crochet for the longest time because these videos were so confusing
That’s part of why I mostly stay away from making tutorials. You need to not only be able to explain what you’re doing but also film well. I have gotten better over this last year I think but it’s a skill unto itself
I really dislike the squeaky acrylic yarns as well, and I found a solution that works each time for me :) is using Furls ebony hooks ahah wooden hook that slides good enough for a wooden hook and acrylic doesn't squeak on a wooden hook, it still makes some noise but not the squeaky noise ahaha you should try. My go to hooks are the clovers but sadly even clovers make plastic hooks from 6.5mm and up ant the plastic hook squads on acrylic.
I might just be biased as parfait chunky is one of my most used yarns, (along with big twist posh) but I haven't really had issues with it breaking when putting stuff together, because I just don't sew with it. I got acrylic yarn for that and it blends in to the yarn anyways. a while ago they had a few months where the quality control failed or something so it was falling apart much more often than it should have, but that has been fixed now.
I know attaching another yarn is always an option but I don’t want to have to do that every time and sometimes don’t have a color to match. I just wish it was a stronger yarn.
I’m so early!! The factory knots is so real, my last project I was working with vintage yarn from the 90s and of all the skeins I used they didn’t have any knots! (except one I did myself lol) meanwhile with newer yarns I’m used to find knots per 2 skeins, maybe it’s because the demand is larger and also the product itself much more in less space? that’s my theory
Yes! I've worked with yarn for years. Lately I've come across 2 or 3 factory knits per skein! I don't mind one here or there. I get it they happen. But I'm running into one knot per skein of yarn lately it seems like. I used to go months without running into one.
I agree that companies that make crochet hooks should offer all sizes like 2.5 mm, simply because gauge varies from person to person. Another thing that bugs me is when creators design a basic pattern and then accuse others of copying. I saw where someone in the US accused a designer in Europe of copying, and they hadn't heard of them or their pattern. I think it was for attention.
@Tfwcrochet no, these aren't brushed metal. Mine have a slightly cushioned gray grip and the hook itself is gold metal, shiny. All I can say is I like them enough I have 3 sets of them just in case I misplace one. I've tried other hooks but these just feel right in my hand. I hope you give them a try because I can imagine squeaky yarn would be VERY irritating after awhile.
i hate when chenille yarn falls apart or snaps half way through a project it's such a pain to try and frog back broken chenille and tying too ends together always leaves a bump. This rant is inspired by what im working on right now which is a plushie tapeworm
I'm currently working on a pair of Shakti socks, so that I can finally get rid of my sad grey ball of cotton. I'm sensing another game of yarn chicken coming my way.. Different terminology foe different countries is also a problem (not that big as the "double crochet" situation, though) in Spanish. My personal pet peeve is the lack of variety in my country. For example, there's no way I can get an x.25 or an x.75 mm hook that it isn't basically a wire without paying a king's ransom. I had to cut a toothbrush and duct tape it to my 2.75 mm because there's no way you can get one of those without paying predatory custom fees.
This is way late, but I was working on knitting a sweater while watching. I love crocheting and knitting! I also hate factory knots, but I feel like they're easiest to hide in amigurumi. I can't stand the plastic tapestry needles you get when buying any type of crochet or knitting kit. They bend too much, and they always seem to have sharp bits that snag the yarn.
I'm currently working on ear warmers for an upcoming market while watching this. I'm experiencing a crochet pet peeve at this moment actually. That all patterns aren't created equal. The ear warmers for example, different thicknesses in yarn mean I have to adjust the pattern with how many stitches & rows I do to achieve the same size. It's annoying lol.
I am working on a round blanket right now ❤. As a German I am ofc used to the german terms for the stitches and it gets absolutely confusing. Your US double crochet is called a "Stäbchen" - a chopstick or little rod?- while our double chopstick 😅"Doppelstäbchen" is your US treble crochet. Actually it's rather cute at times; your"chain one" is translated to "build an air stitch" and your US single crochet would be a"solid stitch/mesh". When I use an US or UK pattern, I will write down the German abbrevations into my printout of it bc no matter how often I hear the term or read and translate them I will be very confused at one point sooner or later. Pet peave: tangled up yarn barf.
In the Ravelry forums, there is a board for Amigurumi testers. Designers post a testing call, and those interested comment on the post. I have gotten testers from there.
Just started on the Gargoyle from A Crochet World of Creepy Creatures and Cryptids with some really cute Shadow Marle yarn from Make (Australian brand maybe?) for a friend... I was balling the yarn last night and got to the end of the skein only to find a knot about 1m from the end of a 255m skein... Why even bother at that point??? I know this is what I get for buying cheap-ish yarn but it seems like more work on their behalf than it'd be worth to add that tiny extra bit of length with a giant messy knot :/
I just finished my 4th opossum bag holder, my friend me to make them, they look like road kill! My pet peeve is that when a commercial starts while I’m watching UA-cam videos, it minimizes the video on my iPad, so annoying 😊
I did a granny square while I watched this video. I love your work, maybe more so since I am so bad at amigurumi! lol I guess I don't really have any pet peeves about crochet, except maybe I just can't have all the yarn all the time, but that's a me problem! 🤣
I've wondered about the crochet terms too. I also wonder why all countries can't have the same outlets in walls? I hate visiting another country and needing to have an adapter. I've only done it once, but still! That's why I like Canada. They are the same as US, even with their crochet terms
The outlet thing is annoying. And now nothing comes with wall plug ins. They only come with usb so they can me sold in every country. That’s fine and all but then I have to buy the part that plugs in the wall separately and it’s just annoying.
I’ve tried two Chenille yarns so far and I don’t like either one of them. I find them very difficult to work with one of them is so horribly cheap. It breaks apart when I frog a row or two.😢
I recently started crocheting and came across your your channel. I love your content. It's very honest and whole some. Please keep doing what you are doing. Also I know you try kits but refuse to do the wobbles kits. Amazon has some kits that are similar but cuter. They are called cookie box crochet kits. I've tried two and that was my entry drug lol. Also, is there a yarn you would recommend for babies? Any favorites? And lastly you remind me of Bell from beauty and the Beast. That was the first thing I noticed. I know on one of your videos someone called you Fiona. Yea I see the similarities, BUT you give more Bell vibes, especially with your love of books! Okay I'm done. Love your stuff! Keep up the great work!
Your comment just made my day! I have actually gotten belle from beauty and the beast a few times! The one from once upon a time. I’m so flattered by that
I cannot STAND when yarn squeaks, but I haven't had a single issue with it since I started using furls streamline metal hooks. They're pricey for sure, but they've been a lifesaver for my hands and sensory issues
Working on a dog stuffie order. My biggest pet peeve is people judging how others crochet. Like hold their yarn or hook. Also, making it seem like you can’t crochet and knit. It’s only one or the other.
I know this might sound gross, but it works every time, if your hook is squeaking, run it through your hair for a bit. The oils from your scalp will keep it from squeaking and it will gild better too.
I'm going to sound like a snob when I say this and it's not just crochet related but...I CANNOT stand folk who have just started to crochet, don't know much about it besides the stitches, and then act like they have been crocheting since the stone age. Then on top of that, going to craft shows and seeing these cheaply made amigurumi that they're charging an arm and a leg for that have legit I've had apart before I get them home. I'm all for supporting everyone who wants to learn and sell, I have a side business myself, but I've been crocheting since I was 6, that's 30 years and I'm still learning new things everyday.
This is tricky and I hear you. I’ve been crocheting almost 15 years so I do sometimes side eye newbies. But I was that girl 15 years ago haha. I sold my stuff before I should have I think. It’s advice I would give new people is to hone your skill before selling.
i wanted to add that maybe it's a pressure thing? I've only been crocheting since January and I'd like to think I've made serious progress. every time I show people my stuff they immediately jump to "oh you should totally sell these" or "if I give you a pattern will you make it for money?" I still refuse to do it but maybe some of those people end up listening? I tend to give away whatever people want/like bc I don't think I'm at that point to be charging lol
I agree on newbies acting all-knowing! Am primarily a beader but love amigurumi, have crocheted off and on for 40 years -- I absolutely hate poorly made items by minimally knowledgeable people who act arrogantly and overprice/overvalue their work. I still learn new things all the time, make mistakes, have complete failures -- that is part of life lol.
Not a snob at all! I started crocheting at 5 and it has been 51 years. 😮😂. I can't stand the attitude that everything should be made pattern and tutorial wise for a beginner. Or whining that no one will buy there 90 dollar lovey at a craft fair. No one is buying it because you are a slow beginner, everyone starts at the beginning! Uhg!! They have the world at their fingertips, but still not enough for them! They would never have crocheted in the 70's 😂
This doesn't always apply, but it happened recently so it's now an annoyance. I brought my project with me to work so during my break I could get another row in (I'm kinda on a time crunch). But people kept asking (in the nicest way) to see my project/ to talk about different hobbies. It's the best "problem" to have, but any suggestions for me when I'm in "project mode?" Maybe headphones are the universal sign for "do not disturb."
I only pay attention to the letter if I am using a vintage pattern. Because 1. That is all the hook info the pattern gives you. 2. The letter doesn't match the modern measurements today. They changed over time.
Apparently if your hook is squeaking you can rub it through your hair and the oils on your hair stops it from squeaking. 🤷♀ Also is anyone else washing your hooks? I am not sure if this is a good thing or how often.
OMG…. I think we were separated at birth! I agree with every single one of your pet peeves. I’m assuming the squeak is from your brand of hook? I’ve had that before, but the wax fix is a good idea 😀
I wasn't working on anything... just making sure I was following you on ainstagram. Lol, I don't know if this is considered a pet peeve, but I love clover hooks and hate that the larger sizes aren't metal. I don't like working with plastic hooks because my tension is so tight. I've tried loosening my tension but can never do it.
@@Gigis_Enchanted_Creations I have never actually tried that one. I don’t have a Michaels close by so I just haven’t gotten as into their yarns. Is it a 4 or 5 weight?
The letters on crochet hooks were in use way before the mm sizes were used. I have been crocheting for 60+ years and plain numbers were for steel hooks and letters used for aluminum hooks.
So interesting! Thanks for sharing. I do have some old hooks from my great grandma and they do have the letter only.
I've been crocheting a long time, but not no clue. I figured the letters were ones made in usa, since we don't use mm.
I worked on a dog blanket while watching! I agree that some newer crocheters act like they invented the craft, poor dears. I’m also peeved by expensive patterns being poorly written, or expensive items coming apart far too easily. Yes on patterns. I had a customer want something, she bought the pattern for 12$. The pattern was cral. I pretty much redid it as it went.
I do this. It definitely helps
I don't mind videos where they haven't tried it ONLY because I am the WORST with following patterns so for me I need to like look at stuff and then just trial and error it anyways, but definetly for people who are amazing with patterns, I think it is important to know what you're recommending for those who WANT TO FOLLOW. i am in the middle. i love to freehand and also follow patterns for new techniques. i agree about your last point def.
I sooo agree about people recommending patterns they haven’t tried! Drives me a lil bonkers haha
I’m not the only one! I was afraid I’d ruffle some feathers on that one.
Lol jk
I'm working on a doily for my wedding while watching this and my specific gripe is that it is sooooo hard to find ergonomic solutions for the Itty bitty steel hooks. Everything is for like 2.5mm and up! I've finally just wrapped them in some duct tape for the time being, but these wedding doilies are going to send me! Thanks also for the crochet pain tips video, some of your suggestions are honestly saving me! ❤
I'm glad my tips are helpful for you! Good luck with the doilies and your wedding1
Oh really? The clovers are my favorite in terms of comfort but I know everyone is different.
I retie all those knot by cutting them out & putting in a tailors knot
I sew with acrylic on all my plushies. A tighter stitch and no problems breaking. Cheaper also.
I've never had a problem with eyes. I order all eyes from 6060eyes, or some name similar.
I'm working of curls for a Unicorn.
Some people that's all there channel is about. Showing ideas without even the pattern. They know that they will get tons of likes. They probably don't even crochet 😂
Tip for the squeaky yarn, rub a piece of broken candle over your hook. The wax coating the hook helps alot!
Ooo interesting tip!
That’s interesting to note! When I used a bamboo it split like crazy. Maybe I should try again with my tulip red hook and a looser stitch
you are SO right about premier chenille yarn!!!! say it louder!!! i absolutely hate working with it, and only have had to because the colors i needed for my spider gwen plushie is only carried by premier.
I was working on an Emmett otter amigurumi. Factory knots are my pet peeve for sure. Oh and yard with numbers as colors.
Awh I love that you make backstories for your plushies. That’s so sweet.
I might have to have my husband do it for me! Sandpaper makes me want to crawl into a hole (more sensory issues!) but that sounds like a great idea
6:25 i recently bought a set of clovers that has a 2.5!! I didn't know it was that uncommon since ive seen many 2.5mm hooks
That totally makes sense. And yes that annoys me too when people charge the same for what are basically add ons
Also I'm pretty cheap, but I tend to buy all my bulk safety eyes from aliexpress; they're cheap, you can get bulk of one color, and I personally haven't gotten any scratched ones in yet
pleasseee do a video on the pattern testing drama; people on r/craftsnark talk about it all the time because the demands for pattern testers seem to be getting weirder and weirder every day
I love big twist plush! I definitely need to make a video on chenille yarns that are good.
That is such a cool way to do it!
That’s so funny about the pattern round up videos! I just watched one recently and the thought in my head was, “why didn’t you make it?!” 🤣
Also, I was working on a snowman. ⛄️
Oh now that is taking it way too far
A review of chenille yarns would be great, particularly for beginners like me x
I think I’ll make that one soon!
Letters were used for crochet hooks before the mm sizes came into general use.
My knitted blanket ^.^ just finished some crochet slipper socks today. There's alot 😅 um def agree with factory knots!!! 110%
Working on crochet slippers socks - my pet peeve is it is hard to find cotton only boxes from anybody!!!
Sounds so cute! I also have two daughters!
What @JeanneMetcalf-e5d said + the european one are in mm, so the name tells directly what size "4.0 mm" "2.50 mm" and so on.
Im making Christmas ornaments 😂 and working on some deers to give out at work!
Had a knot show up so fast it made me give up on a project
I’m working on a knit cardigan for my 6 year old right now. My biggest crochet pet peeve is when a pattern goes viral and I finally care and decide to make it, only to find a terribly written pattern 😂
Oh and about the pattern testing, it’s been a while but I remember ravelry used to have some groups for matching designers with testers.
For squeaky yarn I keep a small bar of soap next to me and rub it on the needle lightly for a second and it stops the squeak and makes it smell nice! I havent noticed it leaving any kind of residue and I’ve been doing it for over a year now!
Interesting!
I was working on Frosty The Snowman (a pattern from Hobbii). The pattern itself is super simple however it's my first time using ribbon yarn and it's such hard work! But I've got to plough on with it as I brought lots of yarn to make them as Christmas presents. Oh well I might end up with sore fingers at the end but it's working my muscles so I might have buff arms 😄
I also had an issue with the seams on the Boye Ergonomic hooks, had to send them back as they were making my hand go numb.
If you want any pattern testers in the new year I can help you out. I don't have Instagram though, so unless it's on here, I won't see a request.
Well done for not recommending any patterns you haven't tried yourself 👍
I hate it when I go to the store and they have a full shelf of the yarn type and color I want; but every skein has a different lot number.
Oh no that’s bad!
I get my safety eyes from Temu. They also do same colors like your looking for. Never had an issue with them.
I’m working on star Christmas ornaments….really hate knots from the yarn manufacturer & sewing with chenille yarn!
@@Tfwcrochet This is why I like your channel so much. I know that I can trust what you say, and have a giggle, too!
You can use the gear icon on UA-cam videos to slow them down. I find that extremely helpful when learning a new stitch.
I to am peeved by expensive patterns. I was working on a miniature Christmas tree!
My top pet peeve is the factory knots
Would there be a market for color sorted safety eyes? What quantity would people find most useful?
I’m not really sure? I get why they do it. I just get annoyed personally.
I worked on hand printing christmas cards for my art pop up in 6 days
I feel like I never used to find them when I first started. I actually just had one in one of my favorite yarns just last night. So frustrating.
I am planning on making a copying video at some point. It is a big topic to talk about though so I want to be delicate.
I use acrylic all the time and I've never had my yarn squeak. I use the gray Tulip Etimo hooks so maybe that's why?
Are those ones also more of a brushed metal? I think that helps
A tapeworm. So cute 😍
Oh man. I do think I take the variety here for granted.
Haha I get that one.
Thank you for letting me know! I’ll have to try that. I find Ravelry in general a little hard to navigate but I’ll try it.
Spot on for parfait but I absolutely hate hate bernat blanket
Have you ever tried ravelry for finding testers for your patterns? Years ago when I knitted a lot I did some test knitting for shawls through ravelry.
I will have to look into it!
That sounds so cute! That may be a setting thing on your iPad? I know nothing about that stuff because my IT husband fixes everything for me lol
I did a granny square while I watched this video. I love your work, maybe more so since I am so bad at amigurumi! lol I guess I don't really have any pet peeves about crochet, except maybe I just can't have all the yarn all the time, but that's a me problem! 🤣
Oh man ain’t that the truth 😅
I've wondered about the crochet terms too. I also wonder why all countries can't have the same outlets in walls? I hate visiting another country and needing to have an adapter. I've only done it once, but still! That's why I like Canada. They are the same as US, even with their crochet terms
The outlet thing is annoying. And now nothing comes with wall plug ins. They only come with usb so they can me sold in every country. That’s fine and all but then I have to buy the part that plugs in the wall separately and it’s just annoying.
For squeaky yarn, I've heard washing your hook will get rid of the squeak. Waiting to come across my next squeaky skein to test this out.
The Ribbler community has a special area where you can test patterns and call for testers. This might help.
I’ve tried two Chenille yarns so far and I don’t like either one of them. I find them very difficult to work with one of them is so horribly cheap. It breaks apart when I frog a row or two.😢
There are better chenille yarns out there I swear!
I have one of those! I like it but not for amigurumi for some reason.
2:19 crochet me Zaddy made a good point on a short the other day! Why don't you sew the plushies in acrylic yarn? You welcome!
I know you can. I just don’t want to have to do that. I just wish the yarn itself was better 🤷♀️
Working on a dog stuffie order. My biggest pet peeve is people judging how others crochet. Like hold their yarn or hook. Also, making it seem like you can’t crochet and knit. It’s only one or the other.
I’ve never understood this one either.
I know this might sound gross, but it works every time, if your hook is squeaking, run it through your hair for a bit. The oils from your scalp will keep it from squeaking and it will gild better too.
Thanks for the tip! I’ll try it
New sub here. I keep wax paper with my hooks. When the yarn starts to squeak, I rub wax paper on the hook. It tends to work for me.
@@AliP1970 I might try that since I have wax paper on hand.
I bought a bobby pillow last week. I feel that it’s too short around my body.
Oh no! I’m so sorry.
I understand what you mean. I've been crocheting and knitting for 34 years and still learning too
This is tricky and I hear you.
Headphones for sure! I wear them in public. The only time I get bothered while I crochet in public is when I’m not wearing them.
I'm Australian, so we typically use British terms, but I prefer the American terms, they make more sense to me. 😅
Same boat here in South Africa, I cannot work in UK terms 😅😂
I only pay attention to the letter if I am using a vintage pattern.
Because
1. That is all the hook info the pattern gives you.
2. The letter doesn't match the modern measurements today. They changed over time.
Please make a video on the yarn I need to know that yarn drives me nuts
I have a recent favorites video coming out tomorrow where I talk about a couple I like but I might do a dedicated video to chenille yarns that I like.
@Tfwcrochet I would love that thank you!!!
I was crocheting a beanie for my mum
Apparently if your hook is squeaking you can rub it through your hair and the oils on your hair stops it from squeaking. 🤷♀
Also is anyone else washing your hooks? I am not sure if this is a good thing or how often.
OMG…. I think we were separated at birth! I agree with every single one of your pet peeves.
I’m assuming the squeak is from your brand of hook? I’ve had that before, but the wax fix is a good idea 😀
People are saying it’s my hook. I feel like it does it with any metal hook I use. I don’t like wood or plastic so I feel like I’m up a creek!
I hate that too! I use their plastic ones when I have to and they are better than other plastic hooks but I wish they were metal
@Tfwcrochet amy sentiments exactly! Oh, I also wish sweet snuggles light had more colors. Do you know of any yarns that are comparable in size?
@@Gigis_Enchanted_Creations I have never actually tried that one. I don’t have a Michaels close by so I just haven’t gotten as into their yarns. Is it a 4 or 5 weight?
@Tfwcrochet It is a weight 6.
I am making dice bags 😁
Bulk safety eyes in one color from aliexpress is usually decent.
