@@jonathang1700 Since we've seen them as they are now, I guess we'll never know whether I'd recognize them. But none of their pictures made me think, "Wow, she looks like THAT now?!!" and that, too, is OK.
I agree. When you go from 15 to over 30 or more, you’re going to have changes in your face but I recognize all of them when I see them in various appearances
the insightful commentary on this video seems to suggest that there's a connection between age and appearance. hopefully they do a follow-up to pin down some more details on this remarkable discovery.
She inspired me to read the book, 7 Habits of Highly Successful People”, since she was my city-mate in 2008, when I lived in West Des Moines at the time. Her gymnastics schoolmates were at P.F. Chang watching her perform on TV and I watched with them. Later when she had her homecoming celebration the stadium was completely packed. At least 1000 people were packed in that building.
Incredible ... Dominique Dawes looks pretty much like she did when she was competing ... still cute as a button ..( good genes..clean living...). We need her kind of "go get em" spirit in this years Olympics 2021!!!
A few years ago when I was 30, I had my small son with me and I was trying to carry a huge take out order from a Mexican restaurant. A man called out to me , “ Lisa, let me help you carry that”. I didn’t recognize him and asked how he knew my name. He told me I was in his 4th grade class and I looked exactly the same. I guess some of us don’t change that much, or at least he didn’t think so .
@@peanutoreo8052 I can beat that! Went back to visit my home country a couple of years ago, I was 57 at the time. Standing next to a lady in a bus queue she looked at me,I looked at her we had been besties in the first year of school, we had lived next door for that year and were inseparable. Then my family moved and we had not seen,or heard of each other each other for 52 years. It was so cool! We have been in regular contact ever since and have rapidly become as close ( over the seas) as we were at 5 years old!
I remember Betty Okino. Beautiful then and now. Graceful and fluid. I believe she was underrated scored higher that the grades she received at the Olympics. Never received the the attention she deserved.
Well all these ladies achieve and accomplish their goals with gymnastics they have done really well, their stories will inspire the next generation of gymnastics. God bless!!
My jaw dropped by the revelation that young Kate on "This is Us" is Julianne McNamara's daughter. I love that show and Julianne's gymnastics - especially her uneven bars.
I think Kim Zmeskal was my favorite, I'm roughly the same age. When you are young and have an amazing talent, it is something you can channel all of your energy into and goal setting around. Life as a grown up is so complicated. So many distractions and obligations. I think the challenge is holding onto something personal to drive towards and have an identity with.
I was hoping she would make this list too. She is in the picture with Betty Okino, but they didn't include her even thought she did make history as the first American all around champion in the World's Championship. Rough Olympics in 92 though.
@trace9657 nice to meet ya through the ether. I would like to go back to the early 90's for a bit. This current reality isn't doing it for me. Not sure that the rate our species is expanding in technological capabilities is healthy for us. Our ability to know what is healthy for us or limit our consumption seems to be lagging way behind.
I remember watching all of these gymnasts growing up, except for Julieanne McNamara. But I learned who she was after. Shannon Miller is one of my all time favorite American female gymnasts. I remember in Barcelona 92 everyone thought Kim Zmeskal would do great but the pressure got to her and Shannon was solid. That team also had, along with Miller and Zmeskal, Dominque Dawes, Kerri Strug and Betty Okino. 💪
In defense of Kim Zmeskal(and not being argumentative, just sharing info)- yes, there was IMMENSE pressure, media hype and overexposure on her, that wasn't what hurt her. She was struggling to compete on a leg with a major stress fracture. Furthermore, the Karolyis (her coaches at the time) were abusive and pretty bluntly caused eating disorders in their gymnasts, going so far as to not let them use the restroom alone, "for fear they would sneak water". The sheer insanity of that statement isn't lost on me. Not allowing proper nutrition or hydration is a surefire way to guarantee your gymnasts stay exhausted, hungry, and far more susceptible to injury. After researching it and the history of the USA Team, my theory is she was broken down by Barcelona. Shannon Miller trained under Steve Nunno at Dynamo Gymnastics in Edmund, OK, allowing her to sidestep A LOT of those pitfalls.
I lived in West Des Moines at the time and had just completed 3 months of online art school. So I drew 2 charcoal drawings of her. 1 on the balance beam and another wearing her medal standing next to her coach. I gave the drawings to her studio. Then later on somebody else made a statue of her out of butter, so I got upstaged.
They matured that's how life works. They were very successful and for most it has continued in their adult life. Sounds like for the few that had a rough road it seems they have turned things around and we wish them well and continued success.
If a person is a diehard fan of the sport and not a fair weather every four year fan then they are certainly recognizable. They’ve all grown up beautifully.
Nastia has some sort of health or eating disorder. Seeing her chronically skinny when she has had a healthy weight in the past is very concerning. Someone needs to reach out to her. It is very scary to see how skeleton like she is now. She looks much more healthy and of proper weight in the past.
None of us look the same when we grow up! There are people that do, but a very small percentage! Shawn Johnson is my favorite, but Mary Lou Rettin? There are so many great female gymnasts from America and the World!
I loved Dominique Moceanu since the first time I seen her, (I was 11), then it was Sasha Cohen, Shawn Johnson was stunningly beauty to me. I’m shocked she had body image issues. Makayla Maroney was also just so beautiful. Dominique will always be the best all around to me.
@@michellewhiteley79 I’ve heard that but come on. It’s Shawn Johnson, she was & still is so gorgeous. I remember when Moceanu in an interview said “I feel so alone.”. That too broke my heart because I get it, they live such sheltered lives & then they don’t know who they can trust.
I'm not sure if she's on the channel yet but if anybody should be it would be Shannon Miller. I know her brother. It was through a mutual friend who has since passed away. She looks absolutely nothing like she did in 96 I believe it was. Edit: She was the next person on the video after I posted that comment. It's been a few years since I've spoken with her brother so I am just now learning about the cancer diagnosis I'm glad she beat

Who do you think is the best Olympic gymnast of all time?
What happened? blm?
Spiderman
Shawn Johnson
but the cutest is MM
In Atlanta 1996 US team lost. They received the Gold Medal because Bill Clinton was there. Russian team was much BETTER.
