    I was a truck driver and learned very fast that it's a big time waster. Most of these companies don't care that much about you or your family. You can make more money doing something simple like mowing lawns and make more money in less time than driving a truck. I drove for 10 years and the only benefit I got was weight gain and other health related problems. Make no mistake about it...truck driving is a skilled position and most people could not do it or pass the background screening. I stopped driving because of the low pay, long hours and it ruins your health and well being. I would advise you to stop because their is no glory in it. I have over 2 million miles and 2 gold watches. It would have been better to have 2 million dollars for the effort. Hope this helps.

      +Rich Burnette ....just so you know....in order to drive 2 million miles in 10 yrs...you'd have to be driving 2 hundred thousand miles a year.....for a solo driver, it can't be done!!! In order for a solo driver to do this....they would have to drive 548 miles a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, WITH NO MANDATORY BREAKS OF 34 HRS.....So you might want to correct your log.....just saying....Signed....an actual solo truck driver who has been driving for lot longer than you did.....

    My message to youngsters , A former truck driver from Canada: Please stay out of this business, you can make more money in burger king and McDonald.
    Even immigrants are getting out of it, they are realizing that they cant work for peanuts, Just few months back we have a truck driver strike in greater Toronto Area, the minimum wage for trucker here in Ontario is 16-18 bucks an hour
    Every thing on the grocery shelf become expensive.

      But after seeing this video, I'll stick to my warehouse job.

    The Numbers don't lie. If you are a company driver, and lets say you make 0.43/mile.
    Real world average is, give or take - 3000 miles/70 week per HOS. = $ 1,290/wk - 15%(Ontario payroll tax) = $1096.50 net. divide that by 70 hrs + the extra hours they don't pay you for( waiting,fueling, paperwork etc...) 2 hrs a day x 7 days; 1096.5/ 84 hrs = $13.05 an hour that's what your working for,(Ontario minimum wage is $11.25)
    Economic Servitude- PAY TRUCKERS AN HOURLY WAGE!

    time to eliminate brokers. why cant shippers just post on the load boards

    • @SmartTrucking
      @SmartTrucking  6 років тому +1

      Exactly right! With todays technology, there's no need for load brokers. I could never understand why shippers would give their freight to companies that didn't own any trucks. It's like asking a guy that doesn't own a car, for a ride. Dave

  • @Zeviander
    @Zeviander 9 років тому +20

    The carrier can't pay the driver because the customer won't pay the carrier? They'll pay the carrier whatever the carrier charges. The freight has to move or the customer doesn't make money. They'll pay whatever the carrier charges so long as it's the cheapest.
    This guy must be an "armchair economist". The fact he calls truckers an unskilled labour force means he has a complete disconnect with what goes on in the industry.

      Ed, as someone who worked as a shipper/receiver for almost a year and a half for a huge concession supply company, I can tell you that my manager wanted two things: 1) the shipment to be accurately picked so too avoid reshipping, and 2) the carrier to get it to the customer as fast as possible. Unless we mis-picked something, our customers paid the freight, and they didn't care the cost so long as they got the product in time to sell it.

    • @TractorTrailerWorld
      @TractorTrailerWorld 9 років тому +4

      *****
      Unfortunately the big carriers don't seem to raise their rates with their customers. They would rather cut it to prevent another carrier from getting the freight, regardless of whether they have the capacity. Not having the capacity leads to load brokers who contract with smaller carriers who then give it to a company driver or operator. Of course with every transaction money is taken out but the freight doesn't get moved, until the last. The driver ultimately gets the last piece of (crappy) pie.
      The business model is to blame here and needs to be reinvented. I have spoken to several ride sharing companies and have asked them to develop an app for the trucking industry that cuts out the carrier/broker cycle and allows shippers and drivers to communicate directly without carrier/broker interference. An "Uber" style app that guaranteed payment on delivery and lower freight rates (by cutting the fat) is just what the industry needs I believe.
      That plus a national shutdown during the next federal election.
      BTW try pulling anything over the Rogers or the Coq in chainup conditions, tippy container, empty van, tanker, pups then get out of the cab and call yourself unskilled.

    my local company i work for, ruan. they consider working 4 days a week and over 40 to 60 hours a week, they consider that many hours a week part time and dont' pay benefits. when i am working 60 plus hours a week and 5 days, 12 to 14 hour work days. they consider that full time and not over time.
    so my question is. are they being injust with the pay in that regard? i know of other local companies who claim they pay for overtime over 40 hours.
    also on top of that, they steal money from the driver's checks each week and just tell the driver to fill out a pay descrepancy form if you catch something you did missing off your check. but they steal from all the drivers all the time, and they convolute their pay settlement sheets so it is real hard for the drivers to catch it, or even bother with it.

I blame the drivers willing to work for 34-36 cents a mile. they need to start holding them selfs to a higher standard and work for companies paying 45-50 cents a mile.

    Absolutely... Trucker's CAN'T WORK FOR FOOD ! So called "corporation" dictates the prices - it's preplanned and manipulated situation just to lower the trucker's pay. On the the top of that we get "so called regulations" to dehumanize trucker's life. I could put dozens of examples here to support what I just said... Any way, if I don't get what I want in the order to support my family and continue my life I just go to another firm and say screw it !!! Nothing to lose anymore... I need to have my life too., as those "dictating, "providing work", "regulating" and so on... If they don't like it, they can have their way - GET ANOTHER RESUME. Fed up with their BS.

    our industry is full of get rich quick companys and company owners.. if they cant buy 2 or 3 or more vacation propertys then they get there panties in a knot.. at the same time they force dispatch, dont pay the owner opps insurance or licence yet they take a $5000.00 hold back from the driver and invest his or her money and make away like a bandit.. why 5000 dollars.. plus they dont pay for 45 days...huh??? so they have at any given time over $50,000.00 of your money...again huh?? will you ever see that ?? not likely.. when you quit or leave ? good luck. the company weasels will come up with some excuse not to pay you your money.. how many of you out there in your car driving to the city day in and day out can afford to give up 20,000 clams when you quit your job.. most companys ive worked for are caniving weasels and you dont have a leg to stand on in court..they lie about freight rates and wont show you the actual invoice from the shipper.. guess what .. your getting screwed.. And you company drivers out there who are making .45 cents a mile?? they could pay you double and still make money.But as long as you get a touque and a pair of gloves or maybe a montanas gift card for $50.00 you think your special.. wake the frig up dumb ass..yet these same companies will call you on a sunday afternoon from there cottage and tell you to get to the yard,an emergency load has just popped up and you have to go.. and you run like lemmings to the yard while they hang up the phone and open another bottle of wine.. they retire years later and wonder" hey. what ever happened to old Bill? he was a good driver..Oh he just left the yard with another emergency load..." . yes we are screwed until something happens in our industry..

    I agree with most of the letter, although I think some of the wording is disrespectful to truck drivers. It's certainly not that truck drivers aren't skilled, it's that the barriers to entry to become a truck driver are fairly low. I see courses that are less than 250 hours to become a truck driver. I'm guessing the training is good enough so that the driver can get from point A to B on dry pavement, which in most carriers' eyes is good enough. If an accident occurs, it's the driver's fault anyway, so the carrier isn't worried too much (someone please correct me if this is incorrect.) The supply of people that can get through a course like this is high, therefore wages will be low. It's not that the carriers can't pay decent wages, it's that they won't because they don't need to. Regarding the shortage of truck drivers, every industry association asserts that their industry needs more people in order to increase the supply of workers in their industry, therefore pushing down wages. If there really was a driver shortage, pay would go up.

    • @SmartTrucking
      @SmartTrucking  9 років тому

      Entertainment Unit I agree the letter was slightly disrespectful and yes, if an accident occurs the truck driver is usually blamed. please note there truly IS a driver shortage, note pay increases now starting to be offered by many carriers including Swift and Kriska

    First thing I asked the recruiter was what a specific trip paid in miles.
    I was on the phone and at the computer checking Google maps.
    I entered the numbers from address to address.
    I was shocked to find out they short their drivers. (Not really shocked)(About 30 miles per day)
    I asked why they short their drivers and the BS began flowing.
    She said it was because that's the contracts they had negotiated with the shippers.
    (Like that was supposed to make it OK)
    No, I did not go to work for PTI. If I had gone to work for PTI getting shorted on my pay would've been my fault.

    I feel the super carriers have finally cut off their nose to spite their face. They undercut the freight rates and put the smaller carriers out of business. Now, the shippers are used to the cheap rates and won't budge when the super carrier needs an increase to keep up with operating costs. So, instead of upsetting their investors the carrier freezes the driver wages trying to squeeze every penny out of the drivers time. I've worked for two super carriers and always (not really) wondered why dispatch was behind bullet proof glass and code locked doors. The dispatch crew knew the drivers were tired of being treated as POS and were afraid of retribution. Immigrant labor is another problem. I applaud legal immigrants but they don't realize the problems they cause. They work cheap because in their home country what we pay is a gold mine. More super carrier economics.

    I agree, I was a truck driver instructor in England, where the standard of driving is high, compared to US and Canada. It has to be as the roads are much smaller and more congested. So the reason I left trucking after 5 years OTR in North America and 20 years in England and Europe was because the hours a driver has to put in to get the load from A to B is not reflected in the pay packet. Cents per mile does not count when you are parked waiting on shippers to get load together, I regularly had to wait hours, both to unload, and reload. This is time the driver donates to his boss. Also after waiting 3, 4, or 5 hours for the load, then to earn a days pay, at cents per mile, you try not to start your log book until you are on the road, then you will be driving tired later in the day. We all know how dangerous that is, and risky, for going to jail to be Bubba's bitch, no thanks.

    Ronald Reagan deregulated the trucking industry...It still has an impact on it today.. Fuel prices go up,wages stay stagnant.. Carriers of had to go to a fuel surcharge..What about a down time charge.No because it doesn't effect them. Warehouses could careless how long a driver sits. 99% of the time the customer pays for no down time. Because the carrier is scared of loosing the business..It's a catch-22.That doesn't look like it's going to change. City drivers get paid by a time clock.. if over the road truck drivers got paid by the clock they would be millionaires. They need to make more incentive for over the road truck drivers.

    This is all caused by the Federal Reserve, and the banks, Zero interest rates. With Zero interest rates, the largest trucking companies can get trucks for almost nothing, so they get more trucks , and more rookies coming out of schools every day, no experience, equals more wrecks, late deliveries.
    owner operator pays top interest on loan, tough to compete. when interest rates go up, truck driving pay will go up as well.

  • @joshanderson4147
    @joshanderson4147 8 років тому

    I hate to say it but to an extent the letter guy is correct in some ways. if you are in a city where there are more trucks than freight, the shippers have the upper hand to pay less, because the trucks have to fight one another for the freight, however if there are less trucks in that city than freight available, the rates go up because the shippers have to pay what is needed to get their product moved. the bigger issue here is when the trucking companies make substantial profit off of a particular load, they simply pocket the money as where they base the pay to the driver solely on the lowest profit margin load. that's why as a driver percentage pay is better because as the rate increases, so does your pay as the driver. the sad thing is that truck drivers pay has had no increase based on any rate of inflation in 20 plus years. today a standard company driver makes 50k annually, 20 years ago that annual pay could support a family comfortably; today, you scratch by pay check to pay check. where's our fight for $15? I can't tell you how many days I've sat at shippers or receivers that took 6,7,8 hours or more to load/unloaded, bringing the pay for the day or possibly the week to barely over minimum wage.

  • @rcflightseeker3488
    @rcflightseeker3488 7 років тому

    I have to agree with the point made about there being an overabundance of truck drivers and that part of the problem truck drivers do not get paid as good as they should be. Reasons behind this are, because when you first sign on as a truck driver you have to go with a large company making basically minimum wage or less if you do the math because you have low experience. The government gives major tax breaks to these large companies that hire rookie driver straight out of school. And because these large companies are paying these new drivers so little and getting a tax break for hiring them they are able to charge very competitive rates app for hauling Freight. The major reason I believe there is an over abundance of truck drivers is due to the lies recruiters for CDL schools and trucking companies that are used to sucker people in. I got into the trucking industry because I was told my first year I would be making 50K easily and after my second year I could make 100K if I busted my butt. So naturally I took it with a grain of salt and estimated that to be exaggerated slightly. Lo and behold it turns out that was exaggerated majorly I still haven't hit 50K a year after 10 years of driving. I think a good solution to the trucking industry problems would be getting paid an hourly rate like most every job out there or a weekly salary that does not fluctuate.

    Its not shippers or the trucking companys fault.shippers dont raise and lower freight on a daily basis the brokers do.freight brokering should be done away with in this industry and let the trucking company pursue its own contacts.during a down time shippers dont take advantage for the most part but those brokers are more than willing to slice throats.why wouldnt they tho.they dont have a dog in the race.they dont make product,load product or deliver product.if they make a dollar they are still in the black.ive been on both sides of the phone and its crazy how many people in this industry know not one thing about it other than cashing checks

    Poor Ed (writer) knows nothing! I hauled doubles and did dock work for a LTL company, it was the hardest, least paying job, and I left after six weeks! The company was down two injured doubles drivers (workers comp), as well as one driver leaving. The company was so desperate for drivers, they called the 1-800-rent-a-driver. The rental company didn't have any qualified drivers with doubles, tank and hazmat, but we took one driver without endorsements out of desperation! I had to load the rental drivers 53' trailer carefully because of his restrictions, while he napped in the tractor being paid more than me. Then I loaded my two trailers with totes, placed compatible hazmats on each pup, then placarded, hitched, pre tripped, and hauled back.
    Some companies will skirt around trying to pay low wages, but in the end, they will pay out for under qualified, high rental driver wages, because they get so desperate. The qualified, hard working company driver may not exist in our future. In the end, we all maybe scab drivers, and companies will be slaves to rental driver agencies, who may or may not have qualified divers!

I put it this way, 70, 34, 30, 14, 11, 10, 8; pick up and delivery- all of these are the clocks that drivers are subject to. What's missing? PAY!! The fact that everything that involves proper compensation is regulated except the amount of time a company can keep a driver at work without compensation! Corporations will ensure that their lobbyists keep the labor exemptions in place so that they can continue with slave labor wages and tactics!!

    I agree with what is said about public traded trucking companies, squeeze the driver so the brass can get their large bonuses. Remember 30+ years ago when rail was through every town...and truckers where busy and made descent money. Trucking companies can charge more for freight and will receive it if they all stick to it and until the drivers stop waiting at shippers and receivers on their own time.

      Do you mind explaining to me what you mean in your statement? Being one who wants to be an owner operator, i hear there is decent/good money in Intermodal, is this true or am i going the wrong route here (future plan wise)

      +Mete I have hauled inter modal out of the various ports. There is indeed issues in this type of hauling. The biggest issue are the rail trailers that you will haul the container on. YOU must look these over very carefully and if you see a problem make the port fix it before you leave or you will be responsible for whatever DOT finds or whatever breakdown occurs. Money is ok but usually the deal for the driver is getting home everyday or most everyday with weekends off. There are companies that just deal with ports and you will get your load but it is just not drop and hook most times....look wisely at the companies you are interested in and actually talk to those drivers who pull for them.....

    🤣🤣🤣🤣 the customers aren’t paying the companies. That’s a good one. I know of a company in Oklahoma that a friend of mine drove with for two weeks. They paid him a 1k to go 1200 miles then told him he was getting 75% of the linehaul. Only when he went into their office someone accidentally gave him a copy of the rate sheet with the confirmation number from customer. Well turns out that load actually paid them 6k. This sort of thing happens regularly

    Maybe the solution is actually the death of trucking companies. Right now (2018), supposedly the best paying trucking company to work for is Wal-Mart. On average, they pay their truckers $88,000/year. Possibly that is the future of trucking. Working for the end user hauling their loads instead of using a middleman (e.g., trucking companies). As for why Wal-Mart pays more, it might be because there is a trucker shortage. They pay more and thus truckers come to them and thus at least they (Wal-Mart) doesn't have a trucker shortage or have to deal with trucking companies who suffer from a trucker shortage. If more big retailers were to go this route, maybe that will start to seriously raise trucker pay. This might not end up increasing the pay paid by trucking companies BUT this might result in them essentially being the trucker trainers for retail giants.
    What you could do is start a quarterly video that just lists the best paying trucking companies and private fleet companies (like Wal-Mart) and that will help push the above. Just a suggestion.

    • @SmartTrucking

    I drove for one year, and I will never do it again. Way too many issues. Drivers are treated like shit in general in America. And the pay sucks. The only way to drive is if you have your own truck and trailer period.. If your an actual company driver then you are allowing yourself to get screwed. I know everyone has to start somewhere, I understand that but after 1 year, you need to be your own driver and just lease out a company. A lot of the drivers that are in the industry is because they have personality issues, namely they don't like being told what to do. So being a truck driver gives you the freedom of not having the boss man constantly looking over your shoulder.

    Touche"! and thank you for that outstanding comeback! I see we are unskilled and should expect pay to stagnate? hum seems that has been a trend for years! So a carrier excepts cheap freight, averages it out, pays drivers the same old same old and its the drivers fault. As Mr. Spock would say to Capt. Kirk, "fascinating"! With that kind of attitude among managers and presidents, there may be glut of class 8s sitting on the side of the road in flocks! I boils down to poor management. BTW do you think fed ex or UPS has "cheap freight Mr. Ed? No sir. Their rates are set by their management and demand. Hence they are mega profit makers. I apologize for the lengthy note.

  • @jefferyz9271
    @jefferyz9271 9 років тому

    Granted, some people make issues appear to be complex, but the larger trucking companies accept low profit bids and then tell their drivers there's no money. From my perspective if truckng companies told these shippers that they can no longer afford to pull their freight at such low margins, then those same companies will change their stance and pay a higher margin to make sure their products are delivered. Regardless, the driver gets stuck in the middle with no voice or leverage.

    TBH this economist is on the button - the freight rates are down and if the company gets low rates then in turn the driver do too... I get that's not the drivers fault but if you work there then it is what it is - there are too many drivers and companies and I don't believe there is a "shortage" if there was a shortage then why wouldn't both freight rates and driver rates go up? As for the low skilled portion... I'll say this truckers have a thankless job and they deserve more respect for their profession -

    One of the main problems out here is too many Cutthroat companies they refuse to work together and set a rate and not under bid. Then the customer will have no choice but to pay. Trucking companies could charge above the agreed rate by the performance of the trucking outfit. I'm not talking about a rate with a customer. I'm talking about every Trucking outfit in America agrees not to bid under a set rate and signs contract problem solved. Everybody including trucking companies will make money. I love that pipe dream don't y'all.
