A whole list of causes spring to mind:
    (1) Clutch plates are worn out.
    (2) Unintentionally fitted knock off Chinese / Taiwanese cork & paper clutch plates that wear out in a week (my son has just done this on his other bike!!). Beware of knock off clone parts on E-Bay,
    (3) Clutch springs need replacing or upgrading to heavier loading rating.
    (4) Clutch pushrod adjuster incorrectly set up (wound smidgeon too far in). You'd be surprised just how many bikers don't even know that this adjuster exists on the engine on all motorcycles. It sets the preload tension of the clutch springs and fine tunes the biting point of the clutch. Requires some experience, skill and the Force to master art of adjusting a clutch's bite point to perfection on some bikes.
    (5) Clutch pushrod adjuster not locked in place properly after setting it up and it's gradually wound itself in during the race. (Unlikely as they normally wind themselves out gradually so the clutch lever won't pull the clutch in).
    (6) Some of the spring pillars have broken off of the base of the clutch basket (I've actually done this when drag racing in the late 1980's. I broke 4 out of the 6 spring pillars clean off of the stock clutch basket due to excessive transmission loading when launching).

      1) - Brand new clutch plates - about 1 hour old
      2) - hmmmmmmm
      3) - Already replaced - also 1 hour old - longer springs about 6mm longer
      4) - Doesn't have one
      5) - n/a
      6) - nope
Great list though - We've sorted it (we hope) - more soon

      a) - Also clutch free-play all over the shop - Isaac's bike has this issue
      b) - incorrect oil - none JASO standard oil
      c) - incorrect stack height - wrong clutch discs, anti-judder spring missing, washer missing or incorrect orientation
      d) - parts missing - like a thrust washer etc
      e) - clutch cable stretched beyond adjustability
      f) - cam arm tang broken/snapped

I'd have gone with adjustment as a first thing to check.

Yeah - Dave knows what he's doing in that department and that was the first thing he did on the race weekend - to no avail.

"Maybe if I just roll the throttle I'll be able to finish the race AND win". Classic reaction to something going wrong while you're racing.

Ha ha ha I love how he keeps nailing the throttle like the problem is going to go away. Within a matter of seconds he went from just needing friction plates to frying the shit out of the steel plates as well

epic edit at the end there,I know a thing or two about clutch slip,I had a ex prodution rd250lc race bike and a 250lc with a 375 stage 4 stan stevens ypvs engine both of them were deadly fast

Probably had its guts thrashed all its life and is probably still on the original clutch. If it isn't then probably not maintained well? interesting to see what it's like inside! My old golf 1.9 gt tdi 130 started slipping the clutch when towing a trailer. Took it to a garage and it was still the original clutch at 160k miles. The 9 previous owners were probably all boy racers lol.

Just a thought, but if something was out of balance enough, would it cause clutch plates to separate from vibration? For example the pressure plate? There was a central pin to line everything up in shown in the previous video and it didn’t seem to be the right size. The fact that the slipping happens high up in the revs is what’s making think that. Although I think the ZX6 engines have their peak torque at about 11k rpm or something ridiculous... so it could just be clutch plates made from the wonder material most tools are made of these days - Chinesium.
From what I could see in the strip down video, everything looked okay. No obvious contamination or wear. If the springs were shot, you’d feel it in the lever, too.

"Just a thought, but if something was out of balance enough, would it cause clutch plates to separate from vibration?"
      - Well you have to define 'what' is out of balance - and probably no.
"There was a central pin to line everything up in shown in the previous video and it didn’t seem to be the right size."
      - This is for alignment - I'll cover that in the next video.
"From what I could see in the strip down video, everything looked okay. No obvious contamination or wear. "
      - This isn't the engine with the slip - he has the engine with the slip - this is the old engine that he donated -

    • @bunnythekid
      @bunnythekid 5 років тому

The Workshop sorry if I wasn’t concise, let me reiterate.
If the alignment piece wasn’t fit for purpose and, as a result, the pressure plate was not concentric with the rest of the rotating assembly, would the centrifugal force and lever moment of the four springs cause a non-axial rotation of the pressure plate and subsequently uneven pressure on the clutch plates?
I must have missed the part where you said about it being a different engine. Then again it’s not hard, I had to look in the comments to figure out if your name was Matt or Mark because you say it so quickly! “Hellomynamesmattwelcometotheshop” 😂

Shit dude, I see what you mean. This is worse than what I experienced with my 02 zx6. It was only real coming out of Graham hill bend than I noticed it. But then I wasnt at racing level back then. adjustment by a professional/someone who knew this bike sorted most of it out...but also switching from fully synth to semi synth and sticking to semi... Didn't have a problem for the next 2 years on the Kwak...
Apparently it was a common issue, but as I say mine was never this bad.
    Good luck to the guy...

That is quite dangerous from a racing and even just track riding POV. Rider slipstreaming behind will go right up your clacker at speed when it slips as you lose drive. Have seen it happen ... not pretty outcome for either rider. A rule I have is as soon as I have a mechanical issue around power delivery or brakes, get off the racing line, slow down, stick a foot out and head for the pits. That is was as unnecessary recovery, it slows the meet down, and creates yet another issue race control has to deal with.
