    I was always impressed by their seamless transitions from one song to the next one.
    I bought my first record (Tangram) in 1980 and have been a fan since then.
    In my opinion the Froese, Franke, Schmoelling era was their by far strongest time.

    • @theodorrand
      @theodorrand  2 місяці тому

      Yes, Johannes Schmoelling brought a lot of new impulses and musical ideas with him, which also changed TD's music in a very positive way compared to the seventies. The year 1980 was particularly strong in my eyes. With the concert in the then “Palast der Republik”, the film music “Thief” and the 1980 fall tour, there were some very strong pieces. I mean improvised long versions of Silver Scale, Choronzon, Calymba Caly, Kiev Mission, Undulation and Force Majeure with The Price and so on were played. Even before the release of the LP “Exit” in 1981, not to mention the many film scores. The three of them, Franke, Froese and Schmoelling, were probably the best Tangerine Dream line-up. But I also liked the music of the short period Franke, Froese and Haslinger and the accompanying European and US tour in 1986.

    From the albums Exit, Force Majeure and Hyperborea, some of my favorites. Timeless!

    • @theodorrand
      @theodorrand  2 роки тому +1

      Yes mainly from the LP Exit. Force Majeure extract associated with The Price, played with the instruments from the period. Everything sounds very good, but unfortunately the guy who made the recordings, intentionally or whatever the music with the image has not syncronized properly. Also, the video effects I find disturbing, in addition to the unfortunately existing image and sound dropouts. But I can tell you this video material is very rare, believe me.

    Any chance to hear something from Force Majeure is a real treat. The rest is nice but...Force Majeure is TD's best album which curiously, included neither Baumann or Schmoelling, who I regard as icons of the era. It was the unexpected "bridge" between the more popular ages they were progressing into. It still moves me to this day.

      The video is unfortunately not suitable to use the female voice at Kiev Mission as an example. Because if you look closely, everything is out of sync, which was probably due to the editing and a lot of post-production by videographer Mike Steiner. But I know what you mean. Near the end of the concert I got right up front and I remember there was a crowd of us packed together screaming and shouting at them. Thanks Theodor for to upload this concert in color and very acceptable quality. I have uploaded it in 2009 with worst quality and black & white, so it is a pleasure to see it in this condition.
    I think the original audio and video editing is inconsistent, so you never are seeing exactly what you are hearing at almost any time.
    As I said on my upload "if anyone can upload this concert in better quality, I will delete mine", well, it is time to fulfill my promise. I will delete my four parts in b&w.

      Thank you for your comment. Yes sure the video is not synchronically with the sound most of the time. But that can't be helped. This recording has several additional video effects and is added subsequently by the producers, maybe is that the reason. Anyway it is interesting to see Chris Franke at the age 28, Johannes Schmoelling 30 and Edgar Froese 36 on stage after the passed years. I have also uploaded Choronzon from the same day, one of the encores from this "concert". You can find it on my channel too. Best regards!

      @@theodorrand Absolutely agree. Loved the groundbreaking albums with Peter Baumann, but the early '80s with JS saw some wonderfully varied music. I also agree about the band post Chris Franke - it seems he was not only the backbone but also the glue. It fell apart after he left.

      @@andrewgenner2613 Yes Chris Franke was always in the centre of the stage for instance and called the soul of Tangerine Dream by some longtime fans like the guys who published the book "Voices in the Dunes" in the year 1991 plus the Fan Magazine "Dream Collector". But after Franke has left the band, I think some TD productions are interesting too. The CD "220 Volt Live", "Quinoa" and "The Dream Mixes"-CD's are really good and different in my opinion.

      Hallo und danke für deinen Kommentar! Die am 29.8.1981 vor dem Reichstagsgebäude stattgefundene Veranstaltung wurde als Friedenskonzert deklariert, wo über 50 Bands vor über 60000 Zuschauern aufgetreten sind. Soweit ich weiß wurde dieses Video mit Video-Effekten durch den damals mit Edgar Froese befreundeten Videokünstler Mike Steiner bearbeitet, welcher auch gefilmt haben soll. Ob es jemals für eine Ausstrahlung im TV vorgesehen war, weiß ich nicht und kann ich mir auch nicht vorstellen. Im Jahr 1988 wurden die "Elektronischen Musik-Tage Berlin" kurz EMUT abgehalten. Ein großer Teil wurde extra der Berliner Gruppe Tangerine Dream gewidmet. Dort wurde auch der Inhalt dieses Videos gezeigt. Der Initiator der Veranstaltung soll wo wiederum mit Christoph Franke befreundet gewesen sein. Das sind die Informationen die ich habe, ob es stimmt will ich nicht garantieren.

      I usually take the truth of any video's audio/video connections from this era with a grain of salt.. maybe because their studio/live work could easily be overdubbed and it isnt always easy to tell... it's the same concept when watching a dj nowadays with all their equipment turning knobs in live videos and changes arent always perceived as synced in the way your brain wants to perceive them.. its merely just a though.. I realized some time after I uploaded the video that the music is different from what was actually played that day. But my video shows what it was like at the concert at the end of August 1981. That means how Froese, Franke and Schmoelling played or pretended to play on stage. I only know that Mike Steiner filmed this event but only the 2nd half of the concert was published. You can see it here. Steiner probably used sound recordings of TD from the studio when editing the video material and not from the concert. That is why the picture and music are not in sync. The video is called THE ALPHA BABOON - CONCERT IN FOUR CYCLES produced by Steiner/Froese.

      Hello Rob, nice to hear that you like Tangerine Dream and my uploaded videos. The quality you see in the uploaded video on UA-cam is not so bad as you think. I mean there is almost no difference between my "original" and the one on my channel. I don't know the origin source of my video VHS tape form the year 1988. I bought my copy in the early ninetees from a guy from Berlin. I've recorded it on a DVD with an external DVD-Recorder more than 10 years ago. The quality was after the transformation on DVD a little bit better than the video tape because of the progressive scan function from the recorder. What you see here on UA-cam is the best quality I can offer. The content on my DVD or better said a copy of it, is not for sale. Sorry!

      Hello! As I said in the description, the quality is that what you see. Sorry! I've only tried to reduce the noise in the picture, because this footage is from a VHS-tape from a source dated 1988. HD or 720p resolution is impossible I think, because in the eighties there was no such camera available. All videos in 720p or higher are interpolated resolution and not true quality.

    Love all the tracks from this line-up, the best of the band. But most of the music played so-called "live" here is obviously originating from a playback tape, apart from some rare synth solos. It's quite embarrassing to see this woman reciting the lyrics of Kiew Mission with the same intonations as on the album. Not to mention Chris Franke pressing buttons in a totally random way, and Edgar Froese frantically tapping his keyboard without any audible consequences !

      This video was created by Mike Steiner, a video artist and friend of Edgar Froese. I think I remember that he also accompanied and filmed the Australian tour in 1982. This Mike Steiner has as you can see the footage of the video heavily edited and thus the sound is probably deliberately not syncron to the video image together. Nevertheless, one should be happy that these rare video documents from the time of Tangerine Dream with the very popular composition Franke, Froese and Schmoelling exist. Even though much of the music was not "live", i.e. every sequence and melody was played by hand there at the concert, it was still a performance which was presented live to an audience on a public stage.

      Das Konzert war am 29.8.1981 auf dem Platz der Republik. Der Platz der Republik liegt im Berliner Ortsteil Tiergarten des Bezirks Mitte im Regierungsviertel direkt vor dem Reichstagsgebäude. Das ist das was mir bekannt ist.

      The track is called Thermal Inversion, which is how it is listed on bootlegs everywhere. This piece was usually part of the concerts from the end of 1980 to 1982.
