The first is the opening and 1:32 is the easiest, when he gets close, just speeding up will tempt him to attack and miss The other one is more complicated. At medium and long distances, the opponent will turn into a / shape when sprinting. At longer distances, as long as you continue to run away, he will give up. At close range, you need to run diagonally to the opponent's back, creating an angle difference of more than 90 degrees, which will force him to attack and the attack distance will not reach the player due to the steering, just like 01:39. This is like the ultimate horseback fight, and it was funny cause facing Night Cavalry in the base game on horse back also using Adula's Moonblade & some other sorceries I realized they feel so good that way.
FINALLY someone giving Gaius his respect. I love this boss. Once I got his fight locked in and downloaded I came to really enjoy how aggressive and kinetic his fight is. Very little downtime
That's specifically what I hated about this fight. One shot my horse, gets stun locked to death with garbage hitboxes that extends all the way to Caelid. Not a fun fight for me, but my friend did enjoy it. I guess there's really no grey area lol, you either love or hate it
@whoseverslinky0 I love gaius and honestly you hit the nail on the head here. It's not a problem with the boss, it's torrent. Torrent's stun mechanic just ruins horseback because it's impossible to know when you'll get knocked off for certain, and it's pretty much instant death if you do. The game would be way better off if the only way to knock you off torrent was by torrent dying.
It's a fun fight, my only issue is the charge hitbox that is pretty hard to dodge and feels inconsistent because of how precise it has to be and we humans make errors, and the fact some hitbox can hit you twice or even 3 times I had a fun time deflecting each one of his attacks using the deflecting hard tear. Tip for everyone struggling, try to learn to deflect the charge, when you do it correctly it deals no dmg at all, that's how I made the fight slightly more fun because I didn't have to deal with it anymore
This might just be the most spectacular boss fight video yet, just for the effort it must have taken to craft and master a playstyle that got the job done and looked stylish while given the anemic state of horseback mechanics.
Great fight. Your videos have inspired me to fight graciously in my NG+3 run. No matter how long it takes, this is what makes it fun. Currently I fight like a godrick soldier who has learned to roll and mixes and matches different attack types without any flow or choreography. Its a mess and if I saw a hero fight like that in a fantasy world I would burst out laughing lol.
Adula's is easily my favorite mounted combat spell, but I only attempted to do this one or two times before deciding that unmounted combat was going to be easier, lol.
Personally, I mainly hate Gaius because of his charge attack and the fact that originally he would start doing it before you were fully through the fog gate. You’d have very little time to react and still had a chance to get hit by his trampling hitbox when dodging him.

Genuinely one of my favourite bosses in the game-- and that's without using Torrent. Immaculate flow, all angles moveset, ample punishes, generous staggers, super atmospheric at night, neat design. The only prerequisite is that you use Crucible Feather Talisman or Winged Crystal Tear to negate his charge attack.
Defintely gonna try this on a wizard character eventually. I had dodging damn near all his attacks down perfect like this, just i could *never* get a feel for any melee weapons vs him. Then again i didnt use any smithscript weapons either. Id imagine you could some crazy mid air attacks if any of them allow it or are atleast feasible to use. He's growing on me in a weirdly nostalgic way. I remember being just as frustrated with the twilight princess boss he looks like, but when i got it 😂 good fun

Just used torrent to leave The fray whenever I wanted to and not even deal with his annoying attacks. Did not know you could double jump to avoid that one phase 2 charge though!
My first play through DLC on mage Gius punished me. Just got past him yesterday on new character dex build and absolutely mauled him first go. This horse back fighting was amazing friend, I tried it with my mage and it was super hard.

It's why he has all these insane aoe attacks and punishes on-foot encounters. Why he's so hard to tag with melee attacks. As a dex user the fight felt insanely overtuned to me. But now I see it was my approach that was the issue. The fight was _meant_ to be done on torrent.

They didn't just implement mounted combat to have it completely ignored, so they made a fight that could feature it on a grand scale. Much like the open world dragons. I think it's pretty damn cool. YOU are wellcome to fight him however you like, but I'm sticking to my guns here in saying this is how it was meant to be done by the developers. :)

I entered the boss area by mistake after a long run and I had like 200k in runes that I was NOT prepared to lose. I was completely under leveled for this ass**le and it made me mad that I couldn’t just run away from the fight WITH my previously earned runes… I will enjoy any video that shows him SUFFER

I had some great moments fighting Gaius on horseback, but poor torrent just gets repeated stunlocked and dies from some attacks 😢

Torrent is the only reason I can play this game. Almost every field boss I fight mounted. He is my battle buddy.
