Five years ago, I bought an '03 Ultra from an estate, fully loaded with 36k miles for $6500. It has 65k miles now and has been rock solid, save for a few annoyances. Driver door lock button is loose and sinking into the hole, ash tray won't stay latched, passenger side mirror won't auto adjust on start up (it just wiggles in place). I hesitate to replace the mirror because it works manually and it's the expensive heated one with turn signal display. The most frustrating problem is the heads-up and LED dash display goes on and off at random. It has a mind of its own which I assume is a short or a control module somewhere. Thankfully there is still the analog speed/tach. Wife and I are retired now and traveling - the Park Ave is a comfortable and quiet cruiser for a couple old fatties to drive off into the sunset. We've looked at something newer, but so many sedans and SUVs are hard black plastic interior - which compared to the plush interior of the Park Avenue, are neither comfortable nor quiet. So we're keeping it and will spend the $ to have the annoyances fixed. I think we'll be buried in it when the time comes.
The other part of driving one of these is that image of an old grandparents car works in your favor. I have a friend who drives one and has never gotten pulled over even when he is blatantly speeding and other drivers give him extra room too. Its kinda funny because were younger guys but people expect to see white hair when we pass them lol. And honestly your problems are all so small and insignificant I could learn to live with them, especially the mirror. Manually set it where you want it and forget it. Replacing that whole unit will probably cost a good chunk of the actual value of the car for basically a non problem. The heads up display is the only thing that would annoy me and would look into fixing if its a cheap repair.
@@sergeantbigmac We were pulled over after passing a slow vehicle on the way to the eye doc. Both of us wearing our "granny glaucoma" shades that cover our regular glasses. Cop said I sped during the pass. I pointed out passing a car going 5 under if I can only do the limit, and observing safe following distances, would take 30 seconds and 1/2 mile - while another car is coming at me for 1/2 mile - so 1 mile is needed to pass safely. So there's an implied need to pass quickly for safety sake. He agreed and told us to slow down. With the shades, we probably looked to be agents from MIB. Passing doesn't take long with the turbo. In other news, I had $3k in work done to her with the intent of keeping it for the duration. Brakes, shocks, stabilizer bar ... next day, smacked a deer. Had to track down a base Ultra and arrange it to be transported here for parts to fix. So she's got a hood ornament and base grill now. Insurance wanted to total it for lack of genuine Ultra parts to fix it - book value is still $6k. Fixed it myself for $2k. Rides like a dream after the suspension / brake work - we're in it for the long haul now.
I bought a 1998 Park Avenue last February in the UK with 170k+ miles behind it. Well, it had rust behind the front fenders, and on the bottoms of the doors. So a good friend who earns his living in a paint shop fixed that for me. In fact I had the whole car resprayed. Now I have to fix the passenger side a/c, it blows warm. Found a few videos on youtube that should help me fix that. No issues with the suspension or transmission though. I drive it like a Buick should be driven, my wife and I love the effortless way it takes us from place to place. We rate it at least as comfortable as the Lincoln and 7 series BMW that preceded it. It is plenty quick enough for everyday driving, and surprisingly light on gas too. My 6'4" 250lb son in law is happy to travel long distances in the comfy spacious back seat too.
my AC is also problematic. My Park Ave is in winter storage at the moment so Ill deal with that this summer. Also plan on doing some paint work to my car this summer

Got a 2000 Park Ave with 120k miles on it. It was my grandmas. It's been a pretty good car. I've always been on top of maintenance. I believe I've changed the transmission fluid 3 times now. Tranny is holding up great so far (although, imo, any automatic transmission is technically a ticking timebomb from the moment you start it up). Alternator died on it a month or so ago. Replaced that and the battery. Now the MAF sensor is messed up. That's another $130+tax. Fingers crossed this is it for another 120k miles... otherwise, it's gonna get sold. Oh, and I have a bad pulley causing the belt to squeal once it warms up. Annoying af. I'm a Ford guy, honestly, but I always considered this car to be super reliable until as of lately. I wish she'd have gotten a Crown Vic 20 years ago lol. Edit: Actually, I just "feel" like selling it. It's not worth it to sell it, I don't think. I guess I'd be lucky to get $3k out of it, right? Then what? I don't think there's another 2000 year model car with 120k miles on it that I could find for that amount. And the most important thing is, I don't want to sell it. It was my grandmas. I definitely never intended on selling it... but these little problems that keep popping up have me worried. Fuel gauge is also messed up. Temperature gauge is stuck behind the peg, too, lol. But, I can see temp/volts/etc. on the on board display. Mostly small issues.. or at least "superficial" like the alternator and MAF sensor. Nothing actually engine/transmission related. Either way, it's been $150-$200 a pop so far on these issues with me doing the labor. It better straighten its ass up lol.
Door handles are always breaking, crank seals leaking, wheel bearings humming, seat linkages breaking, front engine mount bushings ripping, sub frames rotting, speakers blowing, control arm bushings crumbling, the list goes on and on and on... But I still love these cars. They are super practical and easy and super cheap to work on so just keep up on the maintenance and it will keep running forever (unless the floor rusts out where the subframe bolts to it).

@@c.mcdermo look up how to properly take off the door panels. the front two doors have 5.25in speakers, if they have them the back doors have 3.5inch speakers and the rear deck subwoofers are 6x9inch ones. a month ago i replaced all the stock speakers in my 2003 park ave ultra. if youre will to do the work the door speakers aren't too bad. i can take my door panels off in less than 5 mins now i love it. plastic tools for panel removal go a long way. the after market doors speakers will screw in place just fine but the rear woofers have stupid plastic clips that hold them in place. i pulled mine out to replace the speakers and they sadly were junk after. ended up modifying my rear deck by cutting the plastic grill out of each mouting spot so you could literary see into my trunk from the rear windshield when not mounted. the 6x9 kicker speakers i installed instead of clips i bolted them in and that also let me put the kicker grills on the top side of my rear deck to protect them while also allowing the speakers to be seen from outside the car. honestly should make a video of it. at one point i tested having a ring of leds around them to flash with the bass.

I just bought a pristine 99 Park Avenue Ultra with only 69,000 miles on it. Garage kept, older owner. Everything seems to work just fine. It's easily worth 3 times what I paid for it. Long term, we shall see.
Just picked up a 02 for $1500 124k miles, same thing older owner, garage kept, least amount of rust I've ever seen on a 20 year old car, and their son put a pair of 12 inch pioneer subs in the trunk 😂
I have a 99 Buick park ave, After I turn my car off my lights would flicker on and off, and if I keep the battery connected it will die and need a jump, could it be the fuse box or the automatic light sensor. Every time I get to work and get off work I have to open my hood and disconnect the battery which is pretty embarrassing and inconvenient.
@@samanthamata2017 I had that problem. In my case it turned out to be the ignition switch left in accessories mode when I removed the key. Now I listen for the chime whan I get out. No chime = turned off properly.
@CaptainThirdGen To whomever this may help. If your burning through ICMs on your 3800. Have a good electric guy check the wiring. I kept going through ICMs when finally my shop put their electronics specialist on it. Turns out a bad wire kept shorting them out.
There is a conversion kit for the air bags. The LeSebre has the same issues with air bags. You probably won’t have to deal with the ride quality after ya install the conversion.
They have cabin filters also buy the gas pedal. You may check that. I never had paint problems but it was washed every week and waxed once a month and leather treatment.
I have a 2000 Park Avenue Ultra, but with the tire pressure message on the dash, you can get rid of the message from popping up all the time by simply resting it by pressing the reset button gor like 5 seconds or so and it set it back to "normal" nine of my rims don't even have the sensor valves and this reset method still works to get rid of that annoying message on the dash
What kind of noise was the air shocks making? I'm asking because my vehicle is suddenly making a humming noise but it sounds as if it's coming from the front engine compartment Center the humming noise sounds as if I have very large all terrain truck tires on but I don't my tires are normal and haven't been changed in a while there's no signs of wear only dry rot the car only drives in city so accumulating miles isn't an issue the humming will start roughly about 30 mph and no matter what speed it's consistently sounds the same it's not a relatively loud humming so if you got your windows up and radio off you're going to hear it
shocks would make a clunking sound. humming from engine compartment would likely be an exhaust leak, accessory pulley with bad bearings, etc. something maybe a bad wheel hub? thats where Id start
@@CaptainThirdGen ya all signs are pointing to a bad hub. I replaced the cv axle when I heard the sound start and noticed the axle boot was torn open. For how long is anyone guess. I'm hoping because of that its a hub bearing. I be replacing it tomorrow.

Actually if they continued to improve upon them and use the drivetrain in more cars, I think would have improved their business - evidence Lexus LS and ES. While I like this car, having a prestine 97 lesabre again and my Lexus, it actually doesn't compare. My back is very bad and was surprised to find 99 ES be more comfortable, mainly bc the lesabre seat is too short and pushes on my shoulder blades. At any rate, I think GM made big mistake, not doing what Toyota did with their 3.0 now 3.5 V6, with the 3.8 V6 that thing could probably also turn 300hp today like the latest 3.5 2gr-fse, with the same reliability in both sporty and comfy cars. The 3.6 and such they make today burns many and they never return for another. I got a Lexus by accident 22 year old with 225k miles and only had to replace radiator and a coil pack - i kid you not, with regular fluid changes of course. *for the life of the car. It did need a new power steering hose before it got wrecked.
How do you turn on the lights. I cant find how to cut them on. Please help. I have to hold the stick to the wheel just to see at night and it gets annoying
My 2004 Buick Park Avenue Ultra has the famous fender port holes. I thought the Ultra came with the 17 inch chrome wheels port holes in fender. I'm wondering if the port holes were just on the 2004-2005 Ultra?
JUNE 2022 EDIT: i did get the keyless entry working. Turns out I was jumping the wrong pins to program the fobs. Pin 8 is on the bottom left. Was very easy once I figured that out thanks to those who convinced me the car had keyless entry Since it did not have the AU0 RPO code I was convinced my car just didnt have it from the factory. But all is well now. Thanks guys!
I bought a 2000 Park Ave in 2002. To me it was used than. I think it had 40k miles. I always did dealer service mostly Simpson Buick in Socal. The biggest problem I had was brakes all the time rears. I had about every option but the moon roof. The trans was going at 100k miles later it wouldn't pass smog due to the fuel gage that was another 900 and something. I was like whatever so that was fixed and it passed CA smog. I went to start it one morning and had a bad rod knock at 130k miles. I had a offer of 2k. I took it and ran. I remember seeing them at the LA Auto Show on the stands. It was that or the WS6 Trans AM I wanted. The cars weren't cheap new but Buicks never are. It was always very high maintenance. I sold it in 2010.
I own a 1998 Buick Park Avenue plain not ultra and it consistently shuts off while I'm on the road even did the carberator cleaner when I'm low on Gas and it continues to shut off while driving and it's annoying I did what is needed to be done yet it shuts off 5 times on me a day. What's the problem 😡?
Motor mounts are also something you need to be mindful of. You might think the slamming into gear is a transmission issue, when it is only the motor mounts.
@@CaptainThirdGen I have owned several Buicks starting with my 1970 skylark convertible. Then an 89 park ave electra, 90 park ave, 98 Le Sabre, 2004 Le Sabre. On my 2004 Le Sabre, GM got rid of the brace that spanned across the top of the upper struts. I swear it rolls more than all my other Buicks. I wonder why they stopped using that brace. I have always wanted the Park Ave Ultra just to see the difference. How many miles do you have on that old girl? What is double what it is worth?
i can visibly see the trans mount is bad so thatll be what I start with. motor mounts look good though. The car is currently around 75k miles on the dash I believe. Maybe 76, cant remember. The dash was swapped for a 03-05 Ultra cluster at some point, but the milage seems accurate according to the carfax/autocheck records over the years. The underside is also totally spotless, so the milage seems more believable than I originally thought when I bought the car. Id say the cars realidtically worth about 4 or 5k as it sits. Id like to paint the car properly so it looks nicely finished. At that point id value it closer to 6 or 7. Im not sure if the blue interior hurts or helps value at this point, everyone that sees it seems to love it lol To let go of it id probably be looking for about 8k once I paint the hood nicely. Definitely like the car though, and currently have no plans of getting rid of it. Ill make a video announcement if I do decide to put it up for sale though
You forgot a MAJOR issue with these cars being the front subframe rusts very easily. and if either the subframe or the bushings fail you lose both power and steering, and a very common place for them to fail is when you’re driving on the highway
One area I've noticed on the G Platform that does seem prone to rust is underneath the fuel door. Seems more common on the LeSabre and Bonneville than the Park Avenue or Seville/Deville.
@@CaptainThirdGen I lucked out, my 02 LeSabre was fine by the fuel door, but had the front pannel rot you mentioned on the Park Avenue. Looked ok on the outside, but was rotted from the inside. Still one of the best cars I've owned. If I find a decent shape 2003/2004 LeSabre Limited with the Celebration package, I will be very tempted to buy it.
all that and you have to pull the fender liners out occasionally and cleean out the collected crap or your fenders and rocker panels WILL rot out. In particular if it is a Lucerne.
That air isn't the blend doors you have other problems. I had the same issue with my 2000. After the air was charged the compressor had a leak. I had water poor from the vents also that was a clogged drain. The gas gage was the worst and it had to be done before smog and to get CA tags 900 bucks was a few pennies in 2002 and it wasn't paid off yet. I think my payments were almost 400 a month on it. Today that's nothing but was normal then.
You also need to track down the air leak so you don't blow that air ride compressor. I had a schrader valve leaking in my Envoy for years. Then it bit the dust. It was only after I replaced the rear air bags that I found it. Let me know if you want to sell me that park ave. I will be buy it from you! I am a Michigander as well.
this particular car holds air pretty well. My previous lesabre definitely had a leak though i wouldnt be opposed to selling the car, but my price would likely be double what the car is worth

Are you sure this didn’t have keyless entry standard? I ask because I’ve owned nine Park Avenues in 25 years- a 1980, 1984, 1988, 1990, 1991. The latter, I’m almost positive, had standard keyless entry even in 1991. I then had a 1997, 2000, 2002, and 2004. All of these, I’m certain, had standard keyless entry as well. I’m sure I have at least one original window sticker somewhere. It just doesn’t seem logical.
yep, it was an option. No idea why mine was specced without it given it has every other option. Theres diagrams online that will show you, but when you look at your OBD2 port there has to be a pin in one of the specified locations, and if there isnt, that means the car was optioned without keyless entry. mine has no pin not having keyless entry is one of my biggest gripes with the car
@@CaptainThirdGen Hey man. Just an update on the keyless entry thing we discussed a few weeks ago. So as I mentioned, having owned nine Park Avenues in 25 years, I was sure I kept some original window stickers, brochures, or both. One of mine was a 97 Ultra and my factory window sticker says keyless entry is in fact standard. I also have here a brochure for the 1998 models (which I picked up because I bought my 97 as a new, unsold model in January 98)-the 97 I bought was thousands less because of that so I went with it over the 98’s, but I digress. Bottom line-the 1998 Park Avenue brochure I’m looking at now shows keyless entry as standard equipment in both the Park Avenue and the Ultra. I can’t imagine someone doing a very special (bizarre) factory order to delete that equipment on yours. So here’s a theory-from what I see, you have a mostly 90’s Ultra with a lot of interesting mods-you have a trunk lid from 2005, a console from 03-05, a steering wheel from from 97-00, wood trim that was only available 97-99, a 97-02 grille, and gauges from 03-05. It’s intriguing to me that someone took the time to make all of those unusual mods, but is it possible you don’t have the correct OBDII under your dash? If a window sticker and a brochure from that year show keyless entry as standard, then it is. I don’t know if it’s worth your time, but you might even confirm with a dealer. Sort of off topic, but of all my Park Avenues I’ve kept my 2000 ultra, I take it to the dealer twice a year for regular service to keep it showroom new, and it’s amazing how knowledgeable even the young technicians are over such an old car-great resources for information.
good eye, yes my car is kind of a hodge podge of several Park Aves. I will have to look into the keyless entry thing more because it does drive me nuts how my car does not have it. Thanks for the tip Ill have to keep digging.
My 2002 Buick Park Avenue has a problem. At times the driver side switch did not lock doors, windows would not go up or down on the driver side. After (2), two, or (3) three months it started working then, it quit. Now, the passenger side door locks or window no longer goes up or down? Where is the fuse for the door locks, mirror, and windows at? I subscribed.
You forgot the most common problem with both 3800 engines is the UIM and LIM gaskets go on them. To get rid of tire montering system hold the Eng./Metric button down until it goes to the features option at least on my 2004 i can change the TPM system from tire pressure it had two settings where it would show each tire pressure or you can slect normal/low feature I changed mine to the normal.
the intake gasket issue is a 3800 issue, not just limited to park avenues. Ill have to look at the tpms later on this summer when I pull the car out of storage
My tpms has "????" Told tire shop and he said your airbag light is on and cruise control don't work huh.. Tried running a scan and I think I have a ground issue with my abs system?
Forgot 2 issues I think. Door handles failing so you can't open your door. Window arm failure so your window keeps rolling forward when you put it up. You'll never get a good seal so get use to road noise. Oh. And they don't make it carry the arm anymore if u did want to spend the money
The coolest thing about these is it is considered an old mans car. Which means few people really desire them. This translates directly into CHEAP. It also means the previous owner was an old man.
bad hvac door actuator. I believe the one that controls top/middle/bottom is a big job to replace. I did the left/right one on my car (removed it, couldnt install new one) and it was still a big job
On aluminum you need zinc chromate primer or paint will not stick I used to work on nuclear weapons and most are aluminum and you have to paint them ,zinc chromate primer is only way to get paint to stay on aluminum
my experiences do not agree with your report at all. Most common problem is ignition coils. They go wonky and they don't run well at all and cause all kinds of seemingly ignition misfire shift failures throttle failures poor acceleration vibration problems. Rattling exhaust train, vibration, misfire, bad plugs and wiring indications transmission problems exhaust gas recirculation obds all traceable to faulty ignition coils.
That's not true I've had mines for almost six years and my transmission is pretty immaculate I never had any transmission problems I serviced it probably once a year I think I've even went two years one time between services and I've never had a transmission problem at all. No leaks or anyting my transmission fluid doesn't even burn up when I serviced it it wasn't Blac it was still pretty normal and the level is always exactly the same

Do you have experience with replacing the speakers in a 01 era park ave? Most of mine are blown
@@c.mcdermo When I got my 2003 park ave I had to replace the rear subwoofers. It was a couple hundred dollars to install professionally I think the subwoofers themselves were a little bit over 100$. Getting new speakers installed and then I’m getting a 12 inch sub for the back.
Ive had most of these issues, and replaced all those parts. If needed, Ill do it again. I love this car. 1997 230k miles, just had the driver seat recovered and restuffed. Worth every penny.

Do the doors become frozen? I unlock the doors but still can't open them.
Yes! when I got mine both driver's side doors would not open. I had to replace the door handles, now they are black plastic, so they don't match the paint but all doors open!
Door handles breaking piss me off the most
they are a pretty weak design. i always pull up on the handle, then open the door by pulling the doorframe

Just picked up a 02 for $1500 124k miles, same thing older owner, garage kept, least amount of rust I've ever seen on a 20 year old car, and their son put a pair of 12 inch pioneer subs in the trunk 😂
What do you do when the instrument gauges stop working
What is the solution for getting the heated seats to work? I were thinking it was a fuse but I have not seen where the fuses are blown.
Did u ever figure it out that's the problem I'm having
@@samanthamata2017 I had that problem. In my case it turned out to be the ignition switch left in accessories mode when I removed the key. Now I listen for the chime whan I get out. No chime = turned off properly.
Another common issue is the ignition control modules. I have a 2005 Lesabre , the twin of the Park Avenue and I’ve been through two ignition modules
good one, ICM is common on many aging 3800s. Especially those that have high miles and/or get wet frequently
GM changed their paint in 1999. Being a 98, mine has the older lower quality paint
Love the interior on your Buick

Can you show or do you have video replacing handles, actuator door blend, window track and motor to start with
i removed the blend door. I have a short portion of video about it in my AC compressor replacement video
Having an electronic issue with lights flickering uncontrollably; if turn on parking lights it stops , the passenger side light is broken and loose . Is it ground issue ? Plus now my brake lights work infrequently 🤷🏾♂️
Im having that same issue.. What should we do
I had the same issue, what I did was cleaned the fuse for the lights and they stopped doing it. It should be a big 30 Amp fuse inside the engine
Once again. Truly a Park Avenue moment.
I have a 99 and my trunk keeps popping open on its own randomly and I can’t figure out why and nobody online is speaking about it, I can’t figure out why, if anybody who’s sees this, please help me, I don’t have a key fob so Iknow it’s not that
You forgot the ignition tower coils going bad, the ECM going bad, the brake lines rusting out, the fuel gauge going bad.
Yeah fuel guage wnt out in my '99 a couple of years ago.
Fuel gauge just needs a magnet dragged across it?
does the supercharger ever need an oil change or new gears?
Only one of those ive dealt with is the fuel gauge
@@nickabel8279I can confirm that works!
I got a 2007 Lexus with the 2gr-fse as well and I was thinking the exact same thing!

My 2004 Buick Park Avenue Ultra has the famous fender port holes. I thought the Ultra came with the 17 inch chrome wheels port holes in fender. I'm wondering if the port holes were just on the 2004-2005 Ultra?
03-05 i believe. the 97-02 had basic 16in wheels and no fender vents
Radio fuse which one is it
How does an Ultra not have keyless entry? That is wild. I was surprised I didn't blow the transmission on my '02 GTP.
@@reintgenrc it did. i had to go through a few different key fobs until i found some that would eventually pair with the car. Took quite a while
JUNE 2022 EDIT: i did get the keyless entry working. Turns out I was jumping the wrong pins to program the fobs. Pin 8 is on the bottom left. Was very easy once I figured that out
thanks to those who convinced me the car had keyless entry
Since it did not have the AU0 RPO code I was convinced my car just didnt have it from the factory.
I have the same car, going into 300k in the very near future. It just runs and runs. This sounds like a possible electrical issue.
Sounds like a crank position sensor.
Could be a bad fuel pump as well
Motor mounts are also something you need to be mindful of. You might think the slamming into gear is a transmission issue, when it is only the motor mounts.
the car currently has a worn trans mount. thats one of the 1st things on the list to fix when the cars out of winter storage this spring
@@CaptainThirdGen That is a great looking car by the way. If I were you, I would replace all 4 mounts if you can. If one is bad, then........
i can visibly see the trans mount is bad so thatll be what I start with. motor mounts look good though.
Im not sure if the blue interior hurts or helps value at this point, everyone that sees it seems to love it lol
To let go of it id probably be looking for about 8k once I paint the hood nicely. Definitely like the car though, and currently have no plans of getting rid of it. Ill make a video announcement if I do decide to put it up for sale though
You forgot a MAJOR issue with these cars being the front subframe rusts very easily. and if either the subframe or the bushings fail you lose both power and steering, and a very common place for them to fail is when you’re driving on the highway
good addition, Jacob. subframes on a lot of the fwd cars of this era are a corrosion hotspot.
One area I've noticed on the G Platform that does seem prone to rust is underneath the fuel door. Seems more common on the LeSabre and Bonneville than the Park Avenue or Seville/Deville.
extremely common on lesabres. my 01 lesabre was completely rotted in that area
I have a 2002 Buick Park Avenue and I have power seats that go back and fourth but won't raise and lowee
same issue on my 2000 model
If you can hear the motors engage under the seat, the gear teeth have probably stripped off
The rear panel shelf rusts put completely.
If you're over heating for no reason, check your thermostat housing. Buick never made a gasket for where the thermostat housing and block meet.
all that and you have to pull the fender liners out occasionally and cleean out the collected crap or your fenders and rocker panels WILL rot out.
Today that's nothing but was normal then.
it was indeed the blend door. Fixed it easy. Works fine now. I replaced the compressor to keep it from leaking, but the blend door was the main issue
My previous lesabre definitely had a leak though

@@CT_Taylor i got mine to work yesterday, turns out I was jumping the wrong pins on the OBD2 port
@@CaptainThirdGen oh nice lol.
Theres diagrams online that will show you, but when you look at your OBD2 port there has to be a pin in one of the specified locations, and if there isnt, that means the car was optioned without keyless entry. mine has no pin
not having keyless entry is one of my biggest gripes with the car
@@CaptainThirdGen Geez. That is just plain weird. I can’t even imagine why. Seems out of character for a Buick let alone the flagship model.
yep, its an oddity

The Lesabre reas suspension should fit under your car's rear
The coolest thing about these is it is considered an old mans car. Which means few people really desire them. This translates directly into CHEAP. It also means the previous owner was an old man.
The transmission in the 06 Impala SS willw9rk well here
