that snake level seems like something that Nintendo would actually put as a special level at the end of a mario game.
Serpentine is genuinely one of the best levels I’ve seen from this game, and it’s extra impressive considering it uses one of the most hated assets (snake blocks). Difficult but fair while remaining fun and clever.

The Answer to your Question:
It was the coin box in the end. If you hit it once and stop as the time passes by it reduces the coins it will produce. That was the reason why you were getting different amount of coins when you hitted the coin box and collecting the coins from the pipes. Only by the end when you groundpounded you got all the money the coin box had to offer. Check the video back and you will see what I am talking about.

Wouldn’t the spike have a bigger hit box so you needed to jump?
I think flag would have won at the end of that jungle level, ive seen some dumb tech levels that show its hitbox stretches farther right than you think, and ryu himself once demonstrated how far left over a spike block you can go before death. Although that might have been mm1.
