Cottage Garden Reborn after Destruction

  • This video is about a cottage garden in Newark, Delaware, USA zone 6b, that was redesigned and rebuilt after it was destroyed to modernize the septic drainage field. A tree was lost as well as rose bushes and some small evergreens and a pond was damaged. Trees are not supposed to be planted in a drainage field nor is it supposed to be heavily mulched. Because of its casual nature, a cottage garden is a good type of garden to plant on a drainage field.

One of the best garden videos ever because of adding the names! Wonderful music and no mindless chatter👍

Agree. What I like in a garden video is no talk, and plant names. The music in this video is a bonus!

The music helps my coronavirus nerves and I love to see so many of what my mom grew. She passed in '91 and my dad tried for a while to keep up her gardens. When I moved home after my divorce I tried too, but if we are green-ish thumbs, she was a deep green thumb. I mostly have success in the woodland garden but with the regular garden I seem to have success with penstemon and verbena bonariensas (spelling) but otherwise things won't really come back-except weeds. For ex sweet woodruff comes back but doesn't bloom anymore. We let the roses go, shade garden go, most of herb garden and I shrunk the perennial garden in half. I don't know how she did it all with her active social life, volunteer work, a gourmet meal every night and 4 kids. I am not super talented like that, but at least I am thankful every day! I'm glad to get ideas here to try again in a small way to keep her garden going. Thank you, take care, Fran.

I'm just reading your post now, Fran, a year late and hope you read it and haven't given up. Starting small sounds wise. I began with a small strip of annuals. Actually when I first began when our kids were little I thought green bean plants had to be started in little pots, that's how little I knew. Do what you can so you can enjoy it and not feel crushed by the work. Put good effort into fixing the soil to make weeding easier . Mulch well if the plant can tolerate it. I've had many failures over the years and now tend to grow what likes to grow. So no delphiniums for me though I'd love to have them. Then I try one (or maybe two) new ones to see if they'll be happy. If they work well you can feel like it is a successful season. I moved to Oxford, Pennsylvania two years ago and had to leave those gardens. Last year 2021 I began a completely new garden here with mixed results. Penstemons and verbena bonariensis were great successes! Bad soil is a challenge again plus critters since I cannot have a fence. I'll post a video at the end of 2022 if it looks like anything! Meanwhile, my best wishes to you and your gardening. Enjoy improvising and what you've grown!
