  • The Royal Ballet's Resident Choreographer Wayne McGregor rehearses Soloist Beatriz Stix-Brunell and First Soloist Ryoichi Hirano in the final pas de deux of his Raven Girl, accompanied by Grant Green on the piano and with assistance from stager and Benesh notator Amanda Eyles. Find out more at www.roh.org.uk/...
    The elegiac Raven Girl (2013) is Royal Ballet Resident Choreographer Wayne McGregor’s seventh work for the main stage at Covent Garden, and his most story-led yet. McGregor collaborated with visual artist and award-winning writer Audrey Niffenegger, author of The Time Traveller’s Wife, to create a fairytale ballet that looked back to classics such as Swan Lake but was told with a distinctly modern sensibility. McGregor explained, ‘I wanted a story that in some way connected with the ballet stories of the past… and that involves something surreal, something that delves into consciousness’. The result is a unique piece of visual theatre. Niffenegger’s accompanying novella with her aquatint illustrations is published by Jonathan Cape.
    McGregor approached acclaimed film composer Gabriel Yared (The English Patient, The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Lives of Others) to create the original score. Yared produced a score for orchestra and electronics that McGregor describes as ‘very filmic but [which] gets right inside your body and really helps with the emotional territory of the work’. Ravi Deepres (Quartett) created the immersive video designs.

    This particular video is such a beautiful highlight of Beatrice's virtuosity and the pure elegance of her technique. It also beautifully highlights Wayne's excitement with movements (he bubbles, almost, when he feels something).
    And Ryo is a gentleman; a very strong support for all of Beatrice's "flying".

    Amazing. The nuances that are brought about through the interaction of all three is incredible. Real makes it look effortless and you can only tell how much work is involved when they stop and he is short of breath. You forget that he’s actually lifting. Beatrice is such an incredible instrument in communicating what Wayne wants. The originality of the choreography is incredible the lifts from the floor two over the shoulder To the different body positions in the air. All of them are fresh and beautifully executed. Always a fan to see how the creative process works and this was an incredible 20 minutes of communication, execution, creativity, I just beautiful beautiful movement. Well done

    When girls are en pointe, are they on releve or are they on their tippy toes while on the box of their shoes?

    • @RoyalBalletAndOpera
      @RoyalBalletAndOpera  8 років тому +12

      +TheGamerGirl1989 When en pointe the toes are pointed, not flexed - so dancers are standing on the tips of their toes.

      I think its because he was a dancer and partner himself, he keeps automatically trying to support her, its an incredibly physically demanding part for both the male and female dancers

      I believe he loves a small waist, the girls have to be very petite because of how many lifts there are in the performance. If you notice every girl who performed Raven Girl has been that skinny with very tiny waists but are very beautiful with clean lines.

      Devan S He touches both of them quite often. A choreographer is much like a painter, and that physical interaction with the tool, such as a brush or dancer, helps give that feeling of control and connection to the piece
