I rarely plan my first pair because it's still hard to plan the whole cross (sub 25 dual CN), but I do when I get a really easy cross, and it makes a MASSIVE difference even at my level. The rest of the solve flows so much better, and is guaranteed to be faster than my average no matter what follows.
Thank you for tough love of telling how it is. I have been a lazy cuber, but now recently have learned more about planning first pair than I have in my one year+ of being a cuber.
If the cross and first F2L pair is too complicated I can't plan it in 15 seconds. Sometimes I get lucky with a cross thats fast and preserves an F2L pair, but most of the time I get screwed with having to just plan only cross, then use look ahead with a 50% success rate to track the first pair. When I do plan cross +1 my odds of a sub15 solve are higher than if I dont. I just find it super mentally exhausting to plan cross + 1 if its not a really easy one. I am color neutral too.

The issue I have with the last 2 pairs is that they are often less ideal since I've taken care of the easy pairs. Also, I've practiced quite a bit of first pair, but it seems that if I have over 15 seconds I'm good most of the time, but a lot of the time I can't figure it out well enough in 12 seconds. What video do you suggest to improve this technique, because it seems that I don't have enough strategies and I'm relying on my visuospatial skills too much.
I struggle at planning ahead in inspection, it's too much information. I guess it's a matter of mental fortitude to keep practicing until you get it, idk.
If you're really struggling with it, you can use easy crosses to help you WANT to practice looking ahead to first pair. csTimer and qqTimer have easy cross options. But you always want to push your comfort zone, so don't rely on easy crosses for too long.

It's definitely possible to predict a decent first pair with one cross. When I was practicing hard I could do it 90% of the time
