Important to note that using Guard Points is that it increases your guard level beyond your invested skill points. Important for some late game fights if you're invested enough.
The GU Guard Points work completely differently from all the other games. So you'll have to re-learn your re-learning...
If you return to World though, you should be right at home with its Charge Blade
What's wrong with Chacha and Kayamba? You used to call them your children 😅

Hey Jay, I posted this guard point tip in your previous video but I'll post it again here just in case you missed it:
All you have to do is press X + R right before a monster attacks. The trick is to *press X a bit earlier than R* in order to get the animation where the hunter puts the shield in front of himself during the axe morph. If you're able to do that, you should be able to guard point consistently.
The biggest benefit of guard points is that they basically give your guarding capabilities less knockback, which then enables you to counteract with an AED/SAED (X + A) right after. You can do this with just a normal guard but guard pointing gives you more assurance that you'll have less knockback and can counterattack right after.
*It's more ideal to learn guard pointing here than in GU since guard pointing in that game doesn't function the same way as all the other games*

Sadly, GU is the worst charge blade in the series, second only to base Rise, which was a mess of terrible hitboxes and bad phial values.

  • @Zaney_

Guard points are valuable because they let you get into The AED( the smaller phial attack) or into the SAED. Its extremely strong but it also requires you to have guard +2 for a lot of fights. And another thing of note, guard points in 4u are kind of weird. the morph guard point from sns to axe only works when you press guard and morph at the same time. Holding guard then morphing doesn't have a guard point window which makes things very hard and this is only a 4u cb quirk, every game after this works the way you think it should.

For me, I've never observed an increase in "guard level" on a guard point compared to just a normal guard. If I'm running Guard+2 with a shield charge then there's almost nothing I can't already block (with no chip damage) and counter, making it a moot point.

guardin with red shield does phial damage back and counts as a sword attack meaning it charges your phials on top of that you can go right into aed or saed.
if you guardpoint a head with impact phials it does stun damage as an example. and its a better guard than normal.
    keeps your weapon out counterattack.

I understand your point in "guard points" being hard to learn after you've played without em so long (pun intended)
Besides, you should start to integrate them slowly, and not immediately in your gameplay.
For example, the most used and practical one, is when you're morphing from sword and shield to axe mode, because it is an instant guard point, the moment you press the button.
That one is easier to get, and to use, because it's almost as if you're trying to guard at last second.
Besides, guard points are much more worth to use in 5th gen, expecially world/Ib because of how consistent they are, and how consistent SAED is in that game.

yeah. like I mentioned in an earlier video. learning to properly integrate gp into your normal playstyle feel kinda like learning a new weapon. where you'd normally reposition you have to stand face first against the attack, it also incentivises getting your red shield as fast as possible for the extra guard and extra damage that a guard point does. It's also something you'd wanna learn during late low rank and early to mid high rank. after that it can be pretty punishing to fail a guard point(and you will be failing them quite oftern)
Heck I made a new character just to learn guard points and it took me a few dozen hours till it became muscle memory. So you are kinda right when you said you want to try learn it when you play a different game. problem is that the game you want to learn it cannot be mhgu. it has arguably the most unfun and clunky flow of any charge blade iteration in the history of monster hunter. it's guard points don't even work how it works in other games.

    I'd say 3-4 or so

    1 Heavy: Hammer, GS

    1 ranged: Bow, HBG, LBG
That's usually how I play (though I add second ranged and "special" weapon on top, along with Lance).

Just found your channel through the whole “4U servers going down” thing, glad to see you got to do everything you wanted ^-^
-I just got into the series through world, so sadly I’m gonna have to wait for someone to reverse engineer the servers to make privs. Is what it is, I’m nowhere close to finishing everything in world and I have GU and the revived 3U to play.
    But, about guard points-
They’re not the core of charge blade, so don’t worry if you don’t implement them for a long time. I’m over 200 hours into world and just now have gotten decent at using guard points.
They’re just supplimentary, so don’t stress if your playstyle doesn’t revolve around it.
You can think of it as two things: a situational counter or just a way to play VERY aggressively and still safely.
-or as a way to get free guard perk. I think. I don’t know how it works in 4U very well but I know in world it grants an additional 2 ranks of guard, and I remember hearing it does something in 4U.
Maybe you’ve already heard this all before though. I know you learned charge blade this game, and given the time investment you are probably on par or better, but I hope I somehow helped regardless ^-^

About GU... that game's charge blade is very different from all the other games in was in, so learning guard point properly in that one might be counterproductive. They got rid of both the triple X+A combo into AED/SAED, and they removed the ability to do go into those moves from Guard Points too. This forces a completely different playstyle that would not work nearly as well in all other games. I dare say your current style of play might be better suited for GU. But if you want to re-learn CB, Wilds is probably going to be a great opportunity! I bet they will keep it mostly the same as it was in World.

In GU if you play adept style charge blade, using guard point becomes super easy, because you also get a guard point during the charge up frames of your charge slash (holding A in sword mode)
Guard point in 4 and world shifts you into the guarding animation, and you have a limited number of ways you can react out of it, but one of the ways is by using the SAED, which lets you access it faster than usual at least vs being in sword mode
In GU using guard point doesn't interrupt your current action, which is great for the charge slash guard point becomes you can charge up during an enemy attack, then finish the charge slash like normal

Genuine question Jason, are you trying to guard point in neutral by going into axe form? If so, that is not possible without pressing the special button. I saw it like 5 times in this video. If you don’t press the special button IN NEUTRAL (standing still without attacking), you won’t get any of the guard frames. Also, Aisha is mine, old man. Custom quests need to be integrated into the series somehow. A lot of goofy shenanigans come from them and great memories as well. Either way, I’m glad you enjoyed 4U! You quit before you got to the worst part, being relic grinding. Relic grinding is what killed the game for me, same with rise and anomaly grinding (albeit I already didn’t like rise gameplay).

#1 TIP for starting to use guard points! Helped me a lot to focus at first on the one you can do from a normal guard - the R2+Triangle one! You can translate that back to 3DS buttons, I forgot them!
There's pretty much no gap between your normal guard and the guard point! This means you basically have a just guard! Be holding the guard button, and press the triangle button right before you get hit! The timing is not especially tight! If you're too late you just guard! If your timing was decent, you get a guard point! If you're way too early, maybe you whiff a transition into axe mode! It's easy enough and rewarding enough to be worth the risk! This lets you turn any situation where you'd normally block into a super amped elemental discharge or various other axe mode transitions!
The next one to practice is the R2 from axe mode - the transition from axe back into sword and shield! It's another single-move guard point! It basically lets you guard out of axe, just with a delay! And it gets those amazing SAED options too! If you wiff this one, you can just keep holding guard and be perfectly safe!
There! That's the #1 tip AND the #2 tip for you! The details are a little different depending on which Monster Hunter you're playing, but these tips should hold true in any game with the charge blade! Guard points are how you really unlock that thing's incredible potential! Go get 'em, hunter!!!

Might not be the first one to say this but input a regular guard before inputting the attack button to initiate the GP. I think you haven't understand the concept of guard point is. While it is true that learning guard point can ruin your muscle memory because you already have your own playstyle it is a skill issue that you can't do the timing and rhythm perfectly because you haven't practiced it yet, furthermore having a understanding about a monster's movement and their distance of their attacks plays a major role since it gives you an indication on what specific attacks they're going to do and when will you going to use guard point at the exact moment because if you do it early or to late your going to pay the consequences (just like you experienced). Another very important thing is that having a great reaction time also plays a major role to using guard point since there are other monster who attack immediately without indication (like yian garuga for example)
And pls do remember this tho, guard point is not just about guarding an incoming attack immediately it is also about giving that monster a counter attack after you GP that said attack ( basically pressing the Analog down + B button after using guard point to use AED).
Unfortunately you may not be able to use guard point in MHGU because that game kinda remove that feature so... yeah bummer.
    Hope this helps!!

You actually can use Guard Points like that in GU, since they keep you doing the morph, you just have to Guard Point when it's not a multihit move. After morphing, you can do AED as normal, or even swing the Axe II part.
and GPs are easier in GU, since they have an indication.

@@TGHunter you can yes but both in mhgen and gu they remove a certain function on charge blade than when you guard point an attack instead of giving you a blocking animation which gives u a choice whether you do AED/SAED as a counter attack or just dodge sideways to reposition, when u do guard point in mhgen/gu it doesn't gives you a blocking animation but instead only a invisible frame which automatically transforms into axe mode which sucks as a charge blade user (its really hard to explain this part but i hope you get what i mean).
This is also the reason why some modders created a mod in mhxx (in citra) that allows you to give that block animation when you GP an attack although its not as flawless as the mh4u

They do stun in 4U tho? actually GPs had more value IN 4U. Later games always nerfed Guard points power since they were making them easier to hit as well.
And in Rise, they added multiple easier and better GPs for new players, while nerfing the basic GP.

4U was a game my bro hyped up to me like this big, awesome entry in MonHun after I took a break from XX. (first MonHun, btw.)
I went in expecting cool stuff... And I got cool stuff!
It was a great game for what the base game portion of the content had to offer + HR Caravan.
    Then... G-Rank happened.
And it dropped the ball down the infinite abyss that is Gaismagorm's lair.
I could see what made it so great for people, what 4U bringed to the table in terms of mechanics but...
It just wasn't good. I saw the cracks on the pretty painted wall and the things I saw and experienced first hand within those cracks ruined the experience overall for me.
To the point that it made me think Freedom Unite is a much better balanced game than 4U.
I told this to my bro and called me a spoon fed player.
To which I responded- After playing FU Up to Whitalis, F1 up to Crimson Fatty, P3rd after having filled up my armor set slots, Tri Up to Alatreon and 3U solo in its entirety up to Abyssal that:
"Monster Hunter isn't Dark Souls nor anything Souls-like. It's Monster Hunter! And 4U isn't Monster Hunter to me."
It ended up a disappointment of a game. And that made me really sad.

Weird, cuz 4U g-rank is incredible... It has so much in common with older games as well...
even XX was a weird one, cuz G-rank there had the really bloated HP for multiplayer, those insane and terrible requirements for armor upgrades as well... Hypers being demanded and Deviants being grindy af...
Gaismagorm is easy af as well, its just a big Gore... you sure it wasn't a skill issue at the time bro?
Also, blaming the whole thing on that monster is kinda too much, saying that "I can see the cracks" when the game literally does most of its pacing, content, gameplay, charm and progression almost perfectly for a old world MH...

As a CB main myself, I agree: Guard Point is a neat little party trick to know, but it's far from vital to the (really, any) CB playstyle. Personally, I've never observed a _single_ situation where attempting a Guard Point is preferable if just blocking the attack normally is also available. Across four MH games, never.
Now MHGU does have new options to switch up _when_ a Guard Point occurs in your moveset and some of them are amazing (e.g. Guard Point with the _draw attack?_ yes, that exists), but you can still do a lot of damage without using/knowing them.

@@Stratelier guard +2 with red shield isn't going to block a brachydios's heavy ground punches without knockback.
If you guard point with guard +2 red cb shield you can then counter that with a free AED.
Also there are other examples where guard pointing(even without guard skill) gives you a free AED or SAED where it wouldn't happen without a gp.
Guard pointing can turn some fights from hard to very manageable and also give you so many more counter opportunities to use AED and SAED.
