  • Repairing the clutch pedal on a Volkswagen mk 4 golf. To be honest I found access hard but managed to get the job done. Compressing the clutch pedal return spring with a zip / cable tie helped a lot.
    You can definitely save some money on this repair by doing it your self. Being flexible will help which I am not l😜
    Cheers

    Thank you for this great video, it certainly deserves a lot more than 110 comments or at least words of gratitude, That pedal was a deliberate money spinner for VW AUDI they knew what they were doing just like their emissions scandals, and refusing to give you print offs after diagnosing stating that it has 'Privileged' information on it, ye like hell, privileged for whom, who owns the car ?esp when keys or immobolizers go awol and main dealers are a total bankruptcy agenda! These VW's and Audis are a total money pit, designed to keep you broke! that was an awesome by-pass to weld and shorten that stupid spring, i struggled with it for hours, and i'm a mechanic.🙂👍

    I this is the only video on this problem. Mine has just broke in the same way. Interestingly in the Haynes manual it says to make a spring retaining tool which they even picture but not the dimensions. You'd need a metal fabrication place to make it but I feel the zip tie technique makes more sense.
    I took one from a scrap one today and even though I didn't have to be too careful it was quite difficult to remove so not looking forward to fitting it 😂.
    Thank you for this video

But put 2 mini zip ties round socket either side of rod to secure.Absolute ballix but you helped me out immensely with both your know how and your cheery demeanor. No matter whats broke it can be fixed. Cheers bro.

    So hopefully this comment can also help a little on top of this awesome video.
    Probably best to get a pedal from a scrap car with the black plastic clip.
    When putting back together.
    Put white pushrod clip on first. This isn't easy . I used circlip pliers to separate ends whilst pushing on very hard.
    Have good pedal ready and put into place and push onto white clip that is now on the pushrod. Make sure pedal is roughly in place before pushing onto white clip. It should click into place.
    Now put bolt in but the time put bolt in from left IE console side as access from near steering column is restricted. Push bolt through once pedal is lined up. Don't put nut on yet or just loosely.
    Take zip tied spring. You could also have this off the scrap car. I zip tied either side to compress equally. Don't need a vice. You can press on something with a small gap with zip ties in place and tighten as you compress.
    Make sure spring rear black part is correct in position.
    Fully depress pedal and position white end of spring on black prong on rear of pedal.
    Release pedal gently making sure it is fully engaged.
    So up bolt to somewhat done up.
    Cut cable ties
    Use snips , wire cutters or similar
    Fully do up bolts. Spanner on steering rack side and ratchet on center column side.
    Then put on black clip on rear of pedal which the clutch switch actuator
    Hope this helps

    Great video Gerry. Helped immensely when fixing the same pedal in my Audi TT. I found using a cable tie through 7 coils on the spring made it easier than on the 6 I had first. Also when popping the white end of the spring into place I initially only engaged the pedal on the outer section of the white bit, had to pop it a second time to get it in the middle. Thanks again. My 2000 X reg 1.9 TDi Mk4 clutch pedal is a bit squeaky when releasing it back out. I can now see a few areas I can try and use a bit of WD40 or similar to smooth the pedal out. The pedal was replaced about 5 or 6 years ago for the exact reason you show here - broken metal tab.

    Did u put the plastic clip back on the rod before fitting the pedal?

    • @GerrysDiy
      @GerrysDiy  3 роки тому

      Hi Darren. The hard part for me was the spring but yes you set up the white clip on the rod and into the socket once you have repaired the socket. Then setup the spring. Hope this helps and good luck Cheers Gerry 👍

    Did you not have to adjust the pedal?

    • @GerrysDiy
      @GerrysDiy  3 роки тому +1

      No. Once I fixed the metal that broke off the pedal it was good as new and no adjustment necessary. Hope this helps cheers Gerry 👍

      @@GerrysDiy I just replaced my clutch in my golf and the engagement is right after i left my foot off the clutch. Do you think that is normal? It drives okay for the most part. Thats why i was asking about the adjustment lol

    What was it doing did it just stick to the floor and lost all clutch that’s what happened to me

    • @GerrysDiy
      @GerrysDiy  3 роки тому

      Hi Everyday Car. This is a common fault with the mk4 golfs. There is a metal part on the clutch pedal that holds the clutch cable. The back of the metal retaining socket eventually flexes and snaps off allowing the clutch cable to disenguage. The pedal goes to the floor and you have no action on the clutch. Helps if you are more bendy than me 😜 when trying to get at the pedal. The pedal needs to come out for repair. Thanks for commenting Cheers Gerry
