Kim, thank you so much for sharing! You make it look so easy. You spoke clearly, your camera angles are perfect and you left nothing to guess. I know have the confidence to tackle my ottoman lol Again, Thank you soooooo much❤
Thanks, Kim! Your steps were so easy to follow. I just finished upholstering my own ottoman -- one I'd bought that required a slip cover to be purchased separately. Since I already had a lot of fabric left from a long ago project, I opted to create my own cover, but wasn't sure how to do it. I found your video and voila! Of course, as an amateur, mine has its share of flaws and errors, but I don't think it's too bad for a first timer. A cording foot on my sewing machine would've probably made it a little easier, but I managed with my zipper foot. I'm now inspired to tackle a few more little projects. Thanks again!
Great Joan Elsenstein. keep it up and soon you will be a pro with people knocking at your door hoping you will upholster for them. That's how it happened to us some 20 years ago. Kim
Thank you so much for your tutorials. I used a few of them to recover my ottoman that I love. The results came out fantastic. They're not professional level, but I'm still so proud.
You are truly and inspiration!!! I am starting on my first upholstery project this weekend... It is also a Pillowtop Ottoman. Thank you for willing to teach and show others such as myself the how to's. Bless you! I aspire to be as good as you!!!
Have you ever covered one before? It looks great. I have to cover one in my family room.. I’ve never covered one before. So all I can do is try. I haven’t really sewn in a long while. It should be interesting 🤔.
Just when I think it can't get any better, you read my mind and tell me the specific details on that sweet sewing machine! Your work is lovely. So neatly done. Even on the inside! Tho now I have not only machine but also air compressor and pneumatic tool envy! I'd be remiss if I didn't also mention how much I appreciate your really wonderfully set up work space. Peg board ( I love peg board, my kitchen is covered in it ) and the custom table around your machine! It's all grand!
KimsUpholstery I'm working on what one might call slip covers of the minimalist variety. Dining room chair covers (ish). I'm reproducing something for a friend and neighbor. The original covers were made by his Great Aunt. Replacing them was preferable to re-upholstering the chairs for sentimental and practical reason. I'll post photos.
I'd like to be an independent housewife. That's why I watch all these sorts of videos. So I can learn to do things on my own. I need a sewing machine LOL
Love your work, I sow curtains , table cloths, do embroideries cross stitching, and use to make my own cloths. Do lots of alterations on cloths to. And baskets covers for books with ribbon embroidery. But I like your upholstery work. Am busy making cushions for just out side and for my pets and the children to play on. Sowing is so creative.... tks for showing how you do upholstery’s....❤️🌹❤️🌹
Too cool. As an ancient sewer I'm always eager to find how things are done. I've made cushions and that's easy but I could never figure out what you just showed. Guess anything's easy when you know how, :) and that's why you sell videos. Thanks, great instruction, you're great teacher. Doubt that I'll do it but know I see the secret of how the two go together.,
this is perfect! A long time customer has a pillow top ottoman and I'd never done one before. It's fairly old and it looks like it was stuffed and then the seam was hand sewn. I love the idea of a zipper so much better. It also has cording along the frame base with fringe. I think I can piece the box part in 2 parts with the cording in the middle and then proceed as you have indicated.
I have been looking on line how to do this, never figured the zipper hidden inside. Now I am going to make the ottoman and use your video to cover it. I really appreciate your videos. I reupholstered my first couch watching your videos over and over. I just did my first chair with loose corded back cushion and seat T cushion. I am not able to "sandwich" the 3 pieces together like you do so I do them in steps. Hope to get better. You make it look so easy!!
i wish i can learn this my couch and ottoman need doing i'm having trouble getting new stuff because i like my couch and ottoman . i love your results!
Love your videos. I've made simple headboards before and I hope to do another using the decorative nail heads. Would love to see your instructions on how to do this type of treatment.
Excelente video ,no entiendo su idioma pero demuestra el paso a paso muy bien gracias por compartir sus conocimientos intentare renovar mis sillones,un saludo desde URUGUAY.
I wish I could tell you how many times I have watched your video but honestly I have lost count. LOL Thank you, thank you, thank you. I loved it, used it and we did recover our pillow-top ottoman. Unfortunately, I don't know how to post a picture of it here. Next...the wingback chair to match the ottoman. :)
Wonderful video but the sound disappears at about 8.27 where you share how to put the marks to line up the cushion and the base miters. Can you tell me how you placed the marks? Thank you.
Really nice, informative, easy to follow video thanks @KimsUpholstery. I do have one question, @ 8:32 on video, you have corner markings on your bottom square. I didn't see you make those markings, can you explain how you got the corner markings so I will know where to start the mitered corners from the next piece that will be attached? Thanks in advance!!
I'm doing this with a fabric that ravels badly. Any recommendations on how to handle that? I love your videos... so clear. It is a relief to have a video that you can really see and understand. Thanks!
I recently bought an ottoman identical to yours at a garage sale. It's in great condition but doesn't match my couch. After watching your video, I think I'm ready! I can already feel that my biggest mistake will be in measuring where the bottom of the pillow attaches to the base. That part feels a little overwhelming. The ottoman does have piping but my couch doesn't. Do I have to use piping? I'm using a thin brown microfiber fabric. Thanks for the terrific video. Just for fun, have you ever posted any out takes?
Hi Kim, This is a great video. Thank you so much! Something I still need help with is figuring out how much fabric I need. Do you have a video for that? I searched and didn't find one. Thank you!
Hi Kim. My name is Meg and first off thanks for the great videos. I am in the process of recovering a pillow top ottoman and on my 2nd attempt (1st with your video). I'm stuck though. I have my ottoman frame piece done and ready to attach to right side of bottom cushion piece. You are lining up miters with some box marks located on the bottom cushion piece. Where did those markings come from? I did not have a pattern to follow so I am going off measurements. I hope you can help. Thanks!!
emerson brantley lovesron Here goes.... I would put the bottom piece for the frame over the frame right side up. Now place the cushion bottom which will be sewn ontop of it right side down. Making sure it is layed ontop so it is even all around, corners match up and such pin it to the frame portion of your fabric very securely. Now take it to the sewing machine and sew it on. You can also use measurements from the corner of your frame fabric into where the seam will be and use this same measurement on your cushion bottom plus the seam allowance (the 1/2" around the cushion edge). Either way will work. Its hard to explain with out a visual to show you, but hope this helps. If you are on FB please share your project pictures on our Kim's Upholstery page. I would love to see them, Kim
u are truly amazing lol!!! I have an Ottaman that I want to reupholster but I don't know how to sew!! Do u have video to show beginners how to even use a sewing machine??? I am so completely lost on what u just did!! However I want to learn so badly..
Hi Diane, I don't have a basic sewing video at this time. Check online as I am sure there must be something. Some sellers will have classes too. Good luck, Kim
Great Video! I'm going to tackle my ottoman; quick question; the pillow top on my ottoman was attached separately from the frame; I was planning on hand tacking it to the base ; any ideas?
marking the cushion bottom for attachment you have marks but audio cuts at that point, about 8:17? How did you measure to mark cushion bottom for attachment of side?
Thanks for this video, Kim. I watched this years ago but totally forgot the techniques involved until something pointed me back in the right direction. How much do you normally charge for for fabricating such a cushion? I have to do one for a client (including trim on three sections) but haven't got the slightest idea of how much to charge. Many thanks!
Thanks Kim. I did exactly that, and the customer was very pleased with the outcome. Many thanks once again for sharing your talents with us .... Kudos to you!
Kim, my ottoman looks like the one in this tutorial, but the two pieces are attached. Also, it is a tailored look, no skirt. Any suggestions on how to upholster that? Thanks!
It's so hard to find good craftsmen/women such as yourself. What city are you in? I'd be willing to take a road trip so that you could do my reupholstery!
Hi Kim, Your great videos will be included in my gratitude lists for tomorrow's Thanksgiving. I have a question about interfacing I hope you'll answer. I apologize for the length! My old cover has interfacing that was used to hold the pillow to the frame. It was sewn to the base component so that it also provided a double row of stitching attaching the base to the pillow top. Then, I suppose with the base component inside out over the pillow, the interfacing was stapled to the frame. Next the edge roll and cotton batting were applied. There was also a strip (approx 2" wide) of a layered paper product stapled on top of the interfacing at the lower edge of the frame under the cotton batting (and the skirting which isn't being replaced). Then the base component must have been pulled down, turning right side out over all of that. Not until I was writing this, did I come up with the theory that the interfacing was used to provide protection against lateral movement of the pillowtop and any stresses would be at least partially absorbed by the IF rather than just the base component. If that's not why they did it, what was the reason? I'm wondering if that wasn't overkill? Was the one you've redone here attached to the frame in the same order? Presuming you say that using the interfacing at the very bottom is the old way of doing it and it isn't necessary to reconstruct it in the same way, would you change your answer if I tell you that my dog runs and jumps up on the furniture with way more force than you'd think a 25# dog could muster and that the cover fabric is a faux leather (polyurethane not PVC)? Many thanks for all the videos that you have put out to help all of us amateurs.
Hi Lorraine. I am able to visualize what your describing but it sounds like your analyzation is right. I haven't seen one with the interfacing before but hope. Do at some point. Thanks for watching the videos Kim
Hi my aunt is asking me to upholster our ottoman i think its the same size as the one in your video. Is it possible for you to give me the exact measurements of the cloth cut already?
+Delfin Masamayor Hello, I wouldn't do that. You really need to measure the piece yourself. How you pad and how you work will make a difference. Thanks for watching, Kim
Hi Mike Yates . No I don't, my machines don't seem to like it and I usually try to match the color of the thread to the fabric I am working with. Thanks for watching. Kim

I’m having a problem with my attached pillow cushion. The part where you marked the bottom cushion to the sides. You didn’t explain how you got that mark. Can you explain?

How you marked the mitered corner. Mine looks bad because of that.
Kim, The step where you connect the bottom of pillow top and the bottom ottoman cover is not clear to me. How did you come up with the points to intersect both pieces?
Hello, you need to find the center of each fabric piece and match them up. Hope this helps,
Kim
I have now watched 3 of your videos, I'm quitting my job, too soon? :-)
That day will come! Thanks for watching. Kim
Can I add a picture?

This is the ottoman i want to redo. I don’t have these skills. Or a sewing machine.
I wish this video had captions so I could read what you are saying
Simply Rip all of the seams and use them as a pattern.
I have an ottoman in this style... maybe I can reupholster it. 3.5 yds....
Hi Rebecca, that sounds about right for yardage. I hope you will share your finished project with me. Kim
