it's so ironic that the legacy of a TV show about a time machine would greatly benefit from having someone in a time machine go back and save all of these classic serials.
Like the remembrance of the Daleks, there is a doctor who episode where after the Tardis dematerialises. There's an episode of the show that read "Marco Polo" and it cuts to the credits
So have I - it usually went out on Saturday evenings, usually between Grandstand and The Generation Game or Rolf Harris - go back in time with a video recorder - although it didn’t work with a 405-line telly - but you could do a workaround that can record only the audio and video output from the telly - a piece of computer software - record it on that, bring it forward to now, colourise it, enhance it for surround sound - hard to believe that you are watching an old show from the 1960s! As to asking parents to keep quiet while recording the audio - no chance of that in my family home - every episode would have an extra unseen character in it, portrayed by my now deceased dad, whose only line would have been “Turn that down!”. Totally forgetting that it needs to be that loud to drown out the roar of traffic! With the ability to go back in time and do that, this series will not have been made - not only would every episode have survived, but it would look and sound fresher and newer than when it was fresh and new - in full colour and surround sound!

thank you and your coworkers for the hard work a show that's survived 55 years is something special and with situations like this owes a lot to that work
Wendy Padbury too? Fantastic! Anyway, I'm probably alone in this, given it's reputation for being duller than dishwater, but I'd love for The Space Pirates to be returned. Regardless, I sincerely hope that more missing episodes are found. Either in forgotten places in deserts or jungles, or tucked away in some private collector's vault, it doesn't matter, I'd just like to see more of them return, and I long for the day when there are no more missing stories, only incomplete ones. It'd be even better if there were no missing or incomplete stories, but wishing for only incomplete ones seems more achievable.
this is without a doubt the most underrated channel on youtube. It is so obvious the work that has been put into each episode and I love it. Thanks you so much for doing this.
Good work, Josh. There's no truth to The Space Pirates #2 "being kept for its cultural significance" though. That's a very old and untrue fan rumour that used to be brought up to try and explain why certain individual episodes survived in the archive and others didn't. :-)
Yeah Josh, I knew that some of the Pertwee episodes were missing. Also, Fact- Tomb of the Cybermen (1967) had all episodes missing from the archives. This remained the case for 25 years until the BBC found all episodes in a Hong Kong BBC Station in 1992.
Another high quality and interesting episode! Brilliant series, and the fact you've had Wendy Padbury and Peter Purvis send videos is brilliant. Well done Josh.
They’ve announced why the Highlanders, Marco Polo, and the Crusade haven’t been animated. They’re historicals that involve too many cast members, backgrounds etc. BBC historicals tended to be higher budget than the sci fi ones
Amazing series, thank you for having made it :) and not that they’ll see it, but thank you to everyone who made it possible to still view the classics, you’ve kept the dream alive
The only nine-episode story in the history of Doctor Who is the best. Well done Josh - solid gold research, brevity without compromising detail, engagement and production values. Thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding viewing. (I missed the gay voice conversation.... Narration was fine and pitched perfectly, your voice and tone worked perfectly with your choice of music and pace.) Satisfied viewer and fan. :)
Congratulations on your outstanding Missing Episodes series! This is one of the best pieces of unofficial Doctor Who content on the entire internet! Well done!
8:21 is where my heart breaks. :( I have adored this series, and personally, I love your voice. Please keep making more videos. Can't wait to see what you come up with next.
Man. What a beautiful series. I can't wait to see what else you've got in store for us. Looking at the Wilderness Years would be great, since I don't know much about it, and I feel it could work with the format we've seen here. Also, clearly Singapore and Africa is the answer, that's where most of the "We Don't Know" prints are, and that's where we'll find them, if they exist. Someone should seriously contact the BBC and say "We will find you these episodes because we love this series, no payment necessary". Of course, the BBC will say "No, thanks."
Oh hey it's me! I'm glad you had such a great time working on this series, I definitely had a blast watching it. The production value's fantastic and I can't wait to see where you go next in regards to Doctor Who history (Whostory?). I'd love to see the invasion make a comeback in its entirety, it's a fantastic serial and if my avatar didn't give it away I'm a huge fan of the Cybermen, I'd love to see all their missing episodes be found.
Brilliant job, mate! I was ecstatic the whole way, from beginning to end! :) I really didn't expect Wendy Padbury to make a cameo but it's well deserved for this documentary. This incredible 9-part documentary should be in official Doctor Who dvds imho. One of the best journeys I've watched for these lost, but well-beloved, stories. Lets hope the future is bright for these classics. We're slowly getting animations for lost stories almost every year, which is a good starting point. P.S: Not related but I also love how almost every part until this video had this bit: "Graham Strong's audio recordings are considered the best and Holman and Landen also have recordings" and I knew the line quite well, so I was preparing myself for this line again... well, I was wrong, but it was a good assumption xD Looking forward to your next projects!
Thank you for all your work on this project. It was very informative, not only about the missing episodes, but also the pieces of Doctor Who history that you put in. Thank you.
Excellent video again. Really enjoyed this series, very informative. Just one thing I would like to mention. Like you say parts of the Ambassadors of Death were restored to colour using the chroma dots technique but the rest of that story that were restored to colour used the same technique as The Daemons, combining the black and white film copy with the US colour off air video recording. The whole story could not be done that way as there were bad rainbow effects on the colour recording.
It's the end!! Thank you Josh so much for the 9 episodes of recap and tribute. I was truly touched by how much love and time you put into this series. And best of all, that tribute at the end to the "wacky" and "crazy" fans who over the years have helped to find and preserve and recreate what's missing. Thank you for highlighting them again. It was sweet, and just so classy! People don't often mention how it was truly the fan-love that preserved all we once thought was gone for good from the BBC. And then ... holy cripes .... at the very very end you even put up one of my wacky comments! Aw man, I laughed so loud I think I woke my kid up! Thank you again, and I look forward to what comes next on your channel. SALUTE!
The Invasion has some of my favourite animation in terms of quality and style. Also one of the very first I ever own on DVD, I will never forget that music by Don Harper.
I'm not a big fan of The Space Pirates, but I would like to see it completed just to help complete Troughton's last season. Five returned episode's will always be better than two. This has been such a wonderful series and you should be very proud of the results, so well researched and put together. Thanks for making an old Doctor who fan very happy.
Fantastic! I'm sad that this series is over. I really enjoyed it. As for which story I'd like to see returned...as much as its a weak story..the Space Pirates gets my vote. Thanks again for the great work.
In fairness, I loved the 1990s, where the series was off-air (bar one) more than most of Series 11! :D Sarcasm aside, I do wish the BBC would use people such as Josh and some of the other great Doctor Who analysts (Richard of Clever Dick Films is another), interview them, take on-board their knowledge and feelings, when producing New Who, instead of just wildly trying to make it so many things for so many people, and getting most of it totally wrong. I think the world of Who would be a far better place for it. :)
Brilliant video series Josh. Such a shame what happened but rather be sad about what’s missing, let’s be thankful for what DOES exist. However, while I think some stories/episodes are gone forever, some are still out there somewhere and will be recovered one day...
It’s a shame so many serials are missing, or lost. Makes me appreciate Classic DW even more. I’m probably alone in this, but the animated serials look very strange to me.
@@JoshSnares The animations of the lost episodes are better than not seeing them at all. If more of the original episodes are found the Doctor Who Adventures which have more missing episodes found can be re-issued in a revised copy.
Brilliant episode and congrats on completing such a tremendous series, Josh. Would love to see The Invasion 1 and 4 returned. Great input from Wendy Padbury - your videos are really a cut above and the fact Peter and Wendy have contributed underlines just how well received this series has been. I look forward to a fresh series in the future describing how all the missing episodes have since been returned... Well I can dream!
And we owe so much to you Josh! Part of the Doctor Who mystique is the history of the show. The work of finding and reconstructing the missing episodes is archaeology of that history. Great work.
I'd love to see Space Pirates returned simply because that story needs visuals to work. That story apparently isn't remembered very well by a lot of the cast or crew. Robert Holmes wrote the thing and he didn't remember much about it.
This has been a great series indeed, Josh. Thank you for producing something that looks so professional, is so well researched and is thoroughly entertaining. Be great to see these compiled together and recognised by the BBC on a future release as a bonus feature.
Thank you Josh for your great work! I have enjoyed the series. I want to share with Doctor Who community another site that has talked about this in detail. SF Debris has a lot of information though it is older and has a slightly more opinionated take on the missing episodes. Thanks again for all your hard work!
The Invasion was definitely I prefer it over the Space Pirates, the location work is stunning. Also it's sad to see this series end but hopefully one day you can make more if more stories are animated, found or being recreated (like mission to the unknown).
I have absolutely loved watching this series. I’m sad that it’s over but I’m glad that there are no more missing episodes 😂 well done on making these videos and all the research that you must have done! ❤️
I started watching the Classic Series this year and this video series couldn't be available at a better time. Every time I finished episodes of some part of the series, I would come watch to learn more about the arcs and production. Having this exceptionally produced additional content for free on UA-cam is surreal. Thank you so much, Josh. You made my experience with the Classic Series so much more wonderful. This series of videos was the main reason I didn't give up on the recons and go all the way. If I'm now watching "The War Games" without having skipped an arc, it's all your fault!
Fantastic work, Josh. Please do more. I’m fascinated by how each production team arrived at their choices for the next Doctor for instance, along with the actors who nearly got the part. That would make a great series. You could examine Doctor Who stage productions such as Seven Keys to Doomsday, Curse of the Daleks and the Ultimate Adventure or scripts that never made it to screen like Douglas Adam’s ‘Doctor Who and the Crikkit Men’. The possibilities are endless! Keep up the great work and I can’t wait for a new series of videos.
Loved the quote at the end. It seems like a lot of the Singapore imports are unaccounted for. Wouldn't it be great finding a cache of them in Singapore?
Thoroughly enjoyed this series, excellent work Josh :) Sad it's all over and even sadder because every day that goes by these wonderful episodes feel more and more like they're not coming back. As much as I pray (and I really do, out of desperation) that by some miracle they all just reappear (along with the 4 part version of Planet of Giants) the idea that I'll go the rest of my life and never get to see these stories is so heart-breaking I can't stand it. Reality is a bitch, if only the collective will of fandom was enough to magic them all back I'd be snuggled up watching The Smugglers right now. :( A man can dream.
I loved learning about what happened to and the future of the lost episodes, it was sad to see the end dedication to Graham Strong considering how much we owe of these lost oldies to him because of a lot of them only have the original audio left, thank you to all of the dedicated fans are responsible for giving us what was possible with so many missing.
Again, well done to your last part of the Missing Episodes and I hope like all Dr. Who fans that one day more episodes will come back and show themselves to us.... Fury from the Deep ...… where are you?
Really enjoyed this series of videos - thanks for taking the time to put them together! Looking forward to whatever you do next... P.S. I walked by the church where they "allegedly" found the Dalek Masterplan episodes the other day. Unfortunately, despite a quick search of the surrounding area, I couldn't find any more - LOL :)
Don't know why I didn't think of this. Thought about doing a video or two on the particulars of the stories that WERE lost and then subsequently recovered (in full)?
Thank you. I really enjoyed this series. It just shows you how much material that has been recovered, restored and remade over the years. Impressive stuff. Thanks again.
Kinda sad we've come to the end of this series of videos. For the final time, well done Josh on putting this together, it's been really entertaining and informative 🙂 I look forward to see what you do next.
I really enjoyed your series of videos! Nicely done with great photos and graphics. The BBC could ask for votes of future animated episodes on their website. Let all Whovians vote world wide. I am sure some of us would donate to help crowdfund. Looking forward to seeing your other future videos about classic Who! There is nothing wrong with your voice fyi.
I agree with a number of the comments below in that the animation on the Invasion is by far the best of the lot. I love this story and Kevin Stoney as Tobias Vaughn is the best human villain in the history of Doctor Who. When he goads Professor Watkins into shooting him and then laughs when Watkins realized that Vaughn has already been partially cybertized is a great piece of acting and then of course, there is his useless henchman Packer! When you add that this is the story in which Benton becomes part of the UNIT family and you have a classic. And Josh, while I know that your series must sadly come to an end soon, I have thoroughly enjoyed these videos and I would really recommend that you pitch them to the BBC for inclusion in an upcoming DVD release as the quality is definitely worthy of consideration.
I hope you make more series like this, they're so good! You could do one discussing the unmade episodes of each Doctor (If you have no idea what I'm on about then look up AllofWho's blogs about the unmade ideas)
When I was a teenager in the 1980s, I read 3 of the 4 encounters the Second Doctor had with the Cybermen in novelization form. Tomb of the Cybermen was more interesting to read in book form than it was to watch it on DVD. That story as a TV serial was a serious disappointment when compared to the book. However, The Invasion was just as good of a story on DVD as the book was. The animated reconstructions of missing episodes 1 and 4 are pretty good and are not distracting to the overall story when watching them. If only VHS tape recorders for home use existed at that time could we have seen what was lost. Of all the missing Patrick Troughton stories I’d like to see available in the BBC archives, I’d love to see The Power of the Daleks just to see what Patrick Troughton did at the very beginning to develop his own separate persona from William Hartnell’s characterization of the Doctor. If I had a second choice, I’d choose The Highlanders just to see Fraser Hines first story as Jamie McCrimmon.
I'll most like to see The Invasion returned because I've never really cared for The Space Pirates. Also, Invasion part 4 has some cool parts that I want to see non-animated. Thank you so much for making this series.
The five missing Space Pirates were among the latest surviving missing episodes. They got transmitted in 1976 in IIRC Gambia. The only other currently missing episodes known 100% to have been in existence somewhere in the world beyond this point are the three missing Galaxy 4 episodes until 1977 and The Web of Fear pt3 until 2012.
It's the end, but the moment has been prepared for.

The last video.amazing work Josh.
Excellent work done here. Good luck with future research on the subject of the missing Doctor Who episodes and everything related to it.
Superb work! I’ve loved these 9 videos
This series has been absolutely amazing thank You so much I hope You do more videos on Doctor Who's incredible history :)
Heaps more planned!
Thoroughly enjoyed the series...keep up the great work...🐎
This long-time Whovian thanks you ever so much for an excellent series, Josh!
Well done! It’s not easy getting through those recons early on haha
R.I.P Graham Strong. Your job is considered the highest quality. Always.
Except for this episode.
😍😍
A wonderful series! I can't wait to see what you investigate next!
Thank you 😍😍
Fantastic work, Josh.
Great ideas!
Cosgrove Hall animated Danger Mouse.
An Jon Pertwee voiced Spotty.
This has been a great series. You've done a brilliant job!
Thanks :)
8:03 I accept that grey outfit of Pertwee to be canon, just saying. It looks nice.
Thank God for hard core film and Doctor Who fans for restoring these episodes.
Great job. Looking forward to your future uploads. Congratulations.
Thank you!
Ahhh. This is so sad. I will miss this series. Incidentally, anyone up for a treasure hunt in Singapore?
*Grabs Psychic Paper and a shovel*
Yup!
Tune in next week, that’s exactly what I’m doing! 😂
Excellent series! Loved it.... thanks Josh...
Again I always say this but you really do well with these videos! I was just wandering if you were going to talk about the missing colour episodes.
I'll most like to see The Invasion returned because I've never really cared for The Space Pirates. Also, Invasion part 4 has some cool parts that I want to see non-animated.
Thank you so much for making this series.
This has been a fantastic series! Thank you!
Space Pirates! We need to find it!
But Josh, I *dont* have all the Pertwee dvds, The Final Game wasn’t made 😢
That doesn’t count, and you know it! 😂
I do tho
I only have the three doctors.
Fantastic series! Hopefully the future holds more missing episode finds! Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
The Invasion is one of my favourite Cybermen stories even know the Cybermen don’t appear much in it.
they dont appear until like end of part 4. Its been a while.
Would love for the crusade to be animated.
People should make gofundme pages to raise funds to animate lost serials
The five missing Space Pirates were among the latest surviving missing episodes. They got transmitted in 1976 in IIRC Gambia. The only other currently missing episodes known 100% to have been in existence somewhere in the world beyond this point are the three missing Galaxy 4 episodes until 1977 and The Web of Fear pt3 until 2012.
I’m in the comments section! Wow! thank you Josh
