The water and paint quality is concerning. If I’m going to spend that much money for a car, the thing shouldn’t have water in it and I shouldn’t have to wrap it because it’s not good paint quality. I still want a Tesla, but things like that do concern me. Also the wind noise getting worse concerns me. 😞
Tesla adjusted my rear hatch on my Y and they chipped the roof glass. Long story short, didn’t get my car back for over a month and the hatch still looks out of line but no longer makes that “click” sound like it was getting caught on the body panel. Good luck.
Brian you never mentioned how much room is in the backseat. I have read there’s quite a lot of room and it’s pretty comfortable back there for two people. However, when the seat is adjusted back, your head can hit the bar that’s up on the roof. I’d like to have you sit back there sometime and show how much room you have and whether your head will hit the bar when you put the seat back.
I truly appreciate you suggesting someone else's referral code who doesn't commonly get to refer someone. Not something you see commonly done, definitely just earned a new subscriber!
What a charming chap! Well done videos, Brian. FYI: Last Saturday's WSJ (6/13/2020) Dan O'Neil agrees with you about it being a great car. He's has some funny lines about big ICE SUV's starting and stopping at stop-lights..."they sound like washing machines starting up!" Made me smile. :)
Old (83) guy plan: Wife drives Model 3. I drive Model X, now out of warranty. Wife won’t drive X, loves 3. X is early 7 seater with nonfolding 2nd seats-lame for SUV. Eventually, we should downsize to 1 car. Trading X = $5K for Y. Some day sell 3. Drives like 3, wife will drive it. More utility and easier to get into than 3. (6’1”). Great road car because of efficiency and charging rate. All the latest processing power and SW features unlike X with Mobileye SW. Thanks for the review. I think you’ve shrunk to 6’4”. :-))
Good information that covers Pros and Cons of the model Y. I have been doing research into EV’s and have found the biggest issue I have with Tesla is Quality. control. I’ve noticed that most owners are willing to put up with the fit and finish issues but this is something that is hard to overlook. If I’m going to spend $50K on a vehicle the QC has to improve and I’m not sure if this a priority for Tesla. My next vehicle will be an EV of some type and Tesla is on the list due to having the most efficient battery with the best range on the market. There are other EV’s coming in the near future that I’m interested in as well. Such as the Polestar 2 and Volvo XC 40 Recharge, I’m looking forward to how these function in the real world.
Frances Gordon -- When considering alternatives to any Tesla, I suggest giving the fast charging infrastructure some serious weight. It will doubtless take years for the non-Tesla charging networks to even come close to what Tesla has already established. I’ve made several cross-country trips in my 2018 Model 3, such as from Florida to Washington state, and enjoyed the accessibility, speed and reliability of the Tesla Supercharger network.
The charging network for Tesla is far superior at this point but road trips are not my thing. My next choice for a vehicle will be my daily driver with a daily commute of 40 miles. Where I currently work there are no super chargers but Charge Point chargers are plentiful and using the J1772 adapter is not a problem. On the other hand there is a Super charger close to my home as well as Charge Point. I plan on doing 95% of my charging at home. It still comes down to what will work best for me. I would like to have to height of an SUV as I am dealing with arthritis in both knees. The model Y is still on the list and I’m still about 1-2 years from making the move to an EV. Good insight
I am in exactly the same boat as you. Teslas are definitely the best EV's under the skin, but that skin is full of defects, inside and out. I am also waiting to see the Polestar 2 this year, but am waiting to see independent reviewers to verify their claims. I want to see someone like Bjorn Nyland to do range testing, etc. I expect the Polestar 2 quality control to be far superior to Tesla and I much prefer the interior. As Donald says, though, the Tesla Supercharging network is far superior to any other and that remains a major advantage that will take years to match.
They should make a minivan. That would add another form factor to the lineup. It's always best to have more options even if you don't use all of them. It would open up many European customers who use vans like we Americans use pickup trucks & to business fleet purchasers (like Geek Squad, Amazon, etc.) That would bring in a lot of money for Tesla, especially since such fleets are bought new & sold with fewer miles on the odometer than vehicles bought by the average consumer. More importantly sliding doors like the ones that vans are known for would be incredibly safe for extracting people out of crashes in the Boring tunnels. The S, 3, X, & Y models all have hinged doors which reduce the amount of space emergency vehicles have to extract people out of crashed vehicles in tunnels.
Brian, What about Tesla carrying over the impractical piano black console as a negative? Sure easy fix but how could they ignore customer feedback on this factory finish which is suitable only for a museum piece.
Another great video Brian! I've been having some last-minute doubts about the Y vs a 3 so this helps a lot. Utility wise, the Y just seems to much better, on the flip side a Perf 3 would be really nice, but with a family, still leaning on the Y. I'm scheduled to pick up my MSM LR Y from Matthews on Tuesday as well.. Maybe we will cross paths!
@@i1Tesla Ahh alright... Appointment scheduled for 1PM.. maybe we can catch up at some other time though, I think we live fairly close (Davidson for me).
Thanks for another great video. We're hanging onto our LR Rwd Model 3 for now but if the Cybertruck takes too long or for some reason, we change our mind, the Y is on the list.
Went last night to take delivery of my model y only to find after a whole day of “inspection” the window was misaligned and won’t even close properly, guess I’ll have to wait for my car a little bit longer
Brian great video, thanks!!! I ordered the performance but Im in a very big debate if to get the UP or not, I love the looks and the size of the breaks and the rims too but Im concerned about the range and the life of the tires and how delicate might the big rims and tires are, whats your opinion? UP OR NOT? Also red or blue? Thank you so much!!
I don't think they'll have a Track Mode for the Model Y, just like they won't have an Off-road Mode for the Model 3. I think they are deliberately keeping differentiation between the different models. There are a lot of different reasons for that, but it's been their modus operandi until now, and I don't think they will be changing now.
Mountain Pass maybe working on getting a work-a-round for tracks on the Model Y. But I wouldn't count on it for a while since they are still working their version of the Model 3 track mode. Mountain pass does hardware bypass for their track modes.
Thank you 🙏🏻 how is the rear view/ back mirror? You didn’t say that you dislike it, but I hear it occasionally. Would love to hear your opinion about this
You are correct. Tesla people are not very picky. They buy cars that are damaged like mine. The day I picked up my Y all 5 cars that were going out while i was there were damaged and the horrible customer service folks don’t want you to see them and they don’t. Horrible customer service that needs to change soon. I hope
Hi Brian, some reviewers have said the performance version has a harsh ride that’s “always on”. Do you agree? Is it a jittery ride? You have nicer roads down south than we do in the northeast. Thanks for this video. Another good one. I just wish Tesla would give me a realistic estimate for delivery. I’m told my white interior is part of the delay.
Hey Brian, would you mind to measure the front fender, driver window, and trunk window dimensions (Length and width)? Thank you! Waiting for my MY, and meantime plan to order some PPF and tint film to do some DIY when car arrives.
Does the model Y performance have same issue with the slightly different hub center that is stepped up? I.E do you need specific wheels for this one as well (same as M3P?)
Concerning the frunk latch being loud, I had the same problem on the Model 3 at first, and it took some adjustments of the latch and catch to fix it (a lot to do with front to back position rather than side to side) but now my frunk latch is much quieter with some of the loud clunks actually gone. With your experience and persistence in a little time you should be able to get yours quieter and smoother also.
@@i1Tesla Oops... The reason I thought they might be same/similar is because that sound yours made in the video was Exactly how mine was sounding before I realigned it. But you've got experience with both. Good to know ...
Like so many others, I love the Tesla cars. But they are going to have to address these fit and finish issues sooner than later. They can't continue to blame it on being a new company. They have received a tremendous amount of feedback on the fit and finish issues. As the market tightens with other entrants, they can't afford to lose or discourage marginal purchasers with these problems. I waited a year when I got my three for these very reasons (and I have fewer problems than most others reported). Like you, I love my cars and hope that Tesla will get serious about quality and customer service.
I have my performance model Y coming in 3 weeks. Would you choose the 21” turbine wheels and the lower range? Is that upgrade worth the lower range? Or is the range more important?
I heard that there is little rear view when you look in the interior mirror. I that right? Is it better in the model 3? Thanks! I am waiting for Gigafactory Berlin for the model Y. Regards from The Netherlands, Europe. :)
Lucky you-Berlin is supposed to be getting a MUCH improved paint shop. I haven't gotten my MY yet but from all the videos I've seen it looks very narrow. Good thing there is the rearview camera.
Still wind noise? Super dissapointing as that was one of biggest complaints for model 3.... wife's 24k Honda insight cabin is quieter than the 3 and Y.
I’m in the same boat as you and hoping to be able to plug in a referral code on the day of pick up. I’ve heard from other people that they were able to add a referral code on the day of pick up but that was with model 3 orders. Hoping it should be no different with the y
You sure can! I had my dealer here in Charlotte add a code to mine the other day when they announced the ref program for my Model Y. If you dont have one here is mine : ts.la/jerry24280
I've ordered a Y (last Sept!) but apparently my choice of white interior is holding up the works. I'd love to get the 1000 bonus charge (small compensation for long wait?) but I can't delete my code and replace it with someone else's. So how's it done? Or do I need to wait for a Vin number, or delivery, or the sky to fall??
So owning a 2018 Model 3 the paint and body quality issues are still bad? that is so not acceptable and pretty much ends my idea of moving away from the 3. The wind noise, if not general noise while driving, is a serious weak point in Tesla cars.
Good review. Thanks. I'd be curious to test the wind noise source by stretching a 2" wide piece of painter's tape over the gap between the windshield and roof glass. Does that get rid of most of it? Not a permanent fix, just a test. I like that you want people to use other people's referral code. Cool!
Taking my Model Y into Tesla this morning and one of my biggest problems is the wind noise I am getting. It has a squealing/whistling sound at speeds above 40 MPH. It is almost not drivable with this sound. Are you experiencing this same type of sound. Sure hope Tesla will know how to get rid of this noise.
Ray, every service department is a little different. The two here in NC are great. Not just for me but for most people I talk to. Another reason to leave CA 😄
I also own a 2018 Model 3 and it has wind noise which if it was that same type wind noise I am fine with that, no big deal, but whistling type noise is not acceptable. Brian, do you have only wind type noise or more then that?
Hi Brian I usually watch your videos, they give an honest and clear view of your opinions about Model Y. I think that not having a cover for the cargo area is a very serious security issue. Strong braking can put some load on your neck and cause serious injury. For the price of this car, it is a serious fault that I have not seen anyone talking about this subject. What is your comment on this issue? Thank you.
I dont see it as an issue. Te opening above the seat is so small that not many thing could fit through. Design on and sell it. Im sure there are people that fell the same way
The Tint is so dark in the rear glass that you really cannot see into the rear area. Aslo, if someone has something that you really want away from prying eyes then simple put the item in one of the 2 rear under floor storage areas.
Hey what do you think about the speedometer to the right of you drive ..on that dumb lookiing small iPad ??? Y can't it b on the windshield?? This is my nitpick about this car ...
Recent reports from people picking up their Model Y have not been good. The cars have many issues from poor paint quality, poorly aligned doors and hoods, moisture in lights and smug representatives. I was about to pull the trigger on the purchase of a Model Y - now I'm having second thoughts. I have the majority of my investments in TESLA. I want Tesla to succeed but Elon better get a handle on quality and not quantity! Get your quality down then push quantity. Offering a crap vehicle to someone throwing $60k down is not tolerable or sustainable. Elon get it right; get your painting process fixed and only offer new cars that are flawless not thrown together. Get Tesla out of Commiefornia! Build Giga plants in both TX and OK. When Tesla hits $1000 sell $3 billion in stock to raise cash. Tighten up your ship Elon- slow is smooth and smooth is fast!
Tell that to Brian at i1Tesla he is a lover of Tesla no matter what they do. They are such a poor company from a service and quality control standpoint and that is from most people that you see on the forums. Brian must have his own private tech at Service as he thinks they are great. He is alone, for sure
Thanks for your work in doing these great videos. Now I need you to imagine. Imagine that you don't need the speed of the performance model but that model is being produced first so you could get it earlier. If speed isn't so important (now I did say Imagine), would the smaller gemini wheels with longer range be a better ride (how much better) and have fewer tire/wheel damage issues where the AWD version of the model Y would be better than the performance version. I made two orders and I'll take whichever one comes first but I'm drawn to the AWD one (smaller wheels means longer range, better ride quality?, less prone to road damage?) and the lower price is a plus. However, it seems like most of the reviews are about the Performance model. Can you later buy the gemini wheels and tires and put on the performance model to regain the lost range or is it gone for some other reason?
I personally think the steering in my P3D+ is awful. It feels weird to me and totally different than our LR AWD 3. I don’t know if it’s the massive wheels and tires or something with the steering rack itself, but I personally dislike the way it feels. I feel like I have to make a lot of steering corrections constantly on the interstate. About the paint: the black paint is the worst I’ve ever seen. My car is plagued with rock chips and scratches everywhere even though I don’t drive it on any sort of gravel roads. It’s crazy. I just don’t want to spend the money on PPF. I really wish Tesla would produce a traditional looking SUV. The Y and X wedge shape just doesn’t appeal to me. I also want something that can legitimately go off road and I wouldn’t dare take any current Tesla off road with the crummy paint. I also think the Y should have gotten a larger battery pack, especially considering the fact it has such hugely oversized wheels. I really hope Tesla works on the quality. Some of the problems I’m seeing are completely unacceptable on a Made in Thailand Mitsubishi Mirage, let alone a $39K-$130K Tesla. I think he did it himself, and has a video on it if you search his video list. From what I recall it's a lot of work because you have to take the bumper off and unscrew a lot of things before you can even get to putting the hitch on.
If only Tesla improves build quality for a 60 thousand dollar car. That won't be a big thing they will do for the customers. Where I come from 60 grand USD equals 7 digits of money and I can buy an average looking 2 bedroom apartment with average furniture. And can complain to the builder about all the marble he didn't fit perfectly and he will happily fix it.
I think he did a video on that. Or at least one where he tested it with and without the roof rack. But it would be nice to see how much more energy he has to use with stuff on top.
My Y has terrible panel fitment issues and the wind noise is getting worse as well. Love the car still, but I have to say the quality level is disappointing.
Was going to get the Y but they took too long and my trade in guarantee lapsed and when they finally have mine available they reduced the trade in value on my 3 by $5,000 even though I put 0 miles on it. Ridiculous. Can't justify an additional $5,000 than a month ago.
Dislike. Rear seat buttons didn't work at delivery. QC of these vehicles are really piss poor. 5400 miles is pretty good. I have 7200 in my 2018 3 😂 Water INSIDE the vehicle is definitely not minor
Tony C you are 100% correct with your comment about QC. its a crime to treat customers as fools and hope they don't see these flaws, I was a new vehicle dealer in CA for 30 years and we would never get away with delivering cars with so many flaws

8:25 you're an awesome dad & guy in general haha we can tell ;)
Cannot wait to get one here in 🇨🇭✌️
How much is the ground clearance lowered on the PUP?
Wind noise is probably from the roof rack
I have my performance model Y coming in 3 weeks. Would you choose the 21” turbine wheels and the lower range? Is that upgrade worth the lower range? Or is the range more important?
And would you choose the model 3 or Y?
I would choose the Y over the 3. And get the 21's. It is the same price
I heard that there is little rear view when you look in the interior mirror. I that right? Is it better in the model 3? Thanks! I am waiting for Gigafactory Berlin for the model Y. Regards from The Netherlands, Europe. :)
Less rear view than the 3
Thanks Travis 👍
Lucky you-Berlin is supposed to be getting a MUCH improved paint shop. I haven't gotten my MY yet but from all the videos I've seen it looks very narrow. Good thing there is the rearview camera.
I’m waiting for mine. How much was the Xpel all the way around. Are there different types of expel PPF? Your car looks like a Matte finish.
Still wind noise? Super dissapointing as that was one of biggest complaints for model 3.... wife's 24k Honda insight cabin is quieter than the 3 and Y.
Is your glass roof ceramic tinted? If not, have you noticed any heat issues during your road trips?
I don't have it tinted yet but I haven't noticed it yet. I'm going to the beach soon and will know if I need it tinted then
I have mine tinted on my M3. On a very hot day you will feel a very little amount of sting on your skin. Not necessarily heat but a stinging.
Does the roof glass radiate a lot of heat?
It's not too bad but I might get mine tinted. I had my 3 tinted
How does the road noise compare to a similar car that size like a CRV or escape?
Can I use a referral code on an existing order? I ordered on launch day and I’m still waiting.
The floor mats is better than weather tech?
Hi Brian, is it worth to change from model 3 to model Y? Worth the money?
It depends on your needs. Family = Yes
Also worth it if you’re tall as Big Bird like Brian.
Brian - What are those accent stickers? Ordering the Model X this week; but it needs some accents.
I made a video on them ua-cam.com/video/AoocGDbuFU0/v-deo.html
Good review. Thanks. I'd be curious to test the wind noise source by stretching a 2" wide piece of painter's tape over the gap between the windshield and roof glass. Does that get rid of most of it? Not a permanent fix, just a test.
I like that you want people to use other people's referral code. Cool!
Great idea
Taking my Model Y into Tesla this morning and one of my biggest problems is the wind noise I am getting. It has a squealing/whistling sound at speeds above 40 MPH. It is almost not drivable with this sound. Are you experiencing this same type of sound. Sure hope Tesla will know how to get rid of this noise.
they won't, they will say its within tolerance, that's there pat answer
Ray, every service department is a little different. The two here in NC are great. Not just for me but for most people I talk to. Another reason to leave CA 😄
I also own a 2018 Model 3 and it has wind noise which if it was that same type wind noise I am fine with that, no big deal, but whistling type noise is not acceptable. Brian, do you have only wind type noise or more then that?
i1Tesla it has nothing to do with Ca. It is well known that their QC is horrible compared to other brands. NC is no box of chocolates either
Calling water leakage inside your NEW 70K car a minor issue....I think you are to nice, i would find it totally unacceptable.
It is not that much water and it is just on the seals. They will fix it
How much for your UBERTUBINE WHEELS .?
What rims are those?
Does model Y have air suspension? It would be great for off road.
No, it doesn’t
Not yet but is prepared for. You may have to wait a while for production.
@@mirkonaumann1417 It likely won't, because it would add a lot of weight/cost, and Tesla would want the Y differentiated more from the X.

Brian how much did it cost to wrap your entire car? Love your videos.
It depends on the shop you fo to but a full PPF wrap normally starts at 5K and goes up
How much did your PPF wrap cost?
It depends on the show but it normally starts at 5K for the whole car. But most people get just the front done in clear and it is much less.
5600 in 3 months? Dayyyyum son!
1000 more very soon
Hi Brian
I usually watch your videos, they give an honest and clear view of your opinions about Model Y.
@@i1Tesla thanks for your answer.
The model Y did not arrive Europe / Portugal yet.
@@michaelholliday100 thanks for your explain and suggest.
I did not see a model Y yet. It did not arrive Europe/Portugal.
Elon stated that EU countries would not get the Model Y until the new Berlin factory starts to ship.
Floaty steering?; probably could use stiffer rack bushings
Did you tint your roof? What product?
I didn't yet. I would use XPEL ceramic tint. Sun Stoppers here in Charlotte NC
i1Tesla thx. Went to an XPEL installer is Seattle area. He said he wouldn’t tint. OEM is sufficient he said.
Did you tint the roof glass?
Not yet
First time I've seen David Mitchell in a Tesla video.
could the roof rack be causing the wind noise?
No because the roof rack doen't touch the glass. The rack does make noise but when it is off I still hear some
Thanks for your work in doing these great videos.
Glazed over that water is getting into your car from the rear... ugh not a small deal.
It is just in the rubber seal not the floor. Small amount

Tesla should make a van so I can buy to transport my 6 kids, wife and myself. ;)
Who installed your tow hitch? I'm in the tri cities TN area and would appreciate a good referral for a shop that won't screw it up!
I think he did it himself, and has a video on it if you search his video list. From what I recall it's a lot of work because you have to take the bumper off and unscrew a lot of things before you can even get to putting the hitch on.
I did. It wasn't very hard at all. ua-cam.com/video/QtK9gngCM5Y/v-deo.html
My model Y trunk alignment is worse than urs.
How expensive was the wrap?
*_ok, after months and months of subscription I need to CONFESS something......_*
I like the Rivian too 😭😭😭
A lot of people do. I like the design but I don't like the push to get it to the people. Or the price
ikr
Brian, can you tell us the highway speed Wh/mile without the roof rack, with the roof rack, and with the surfboards attached?
I think he did a video on that. Or at least one where he tested it with and without the roof rack. But it would be nice to see how much more energy he has to use with stuff on top.
My Y has terrible panel fitment issues and the wind noise is getting worse as well. Love the car still, but I have to say the quality level is disappointing.
Funny how’s there’s a few websites now that say they will get the MAXpiders in first.
Well Teslarati is the first. I talked to the editor yesterday about it.
Was going to get the Y but they took too long and my trade in guarantee lapsed and when they finally have mine available they reduced the trade in value on my 3 by $5,000 even though I put 0 miles on it.
Ridiculous. Can't justify an additional $5,000 than a month ago.

5600 miles already...:O

Hi Brian, I think you should blur your vin number ...
Why. It is on the outside of the car too
@@i1Tesla I think its awesome you don't blur the VIN. Keep it up!
Dislike. Rear seat buttons didn't work at delivery. QC of these vehicles are really piss poor.
5400 miles is pretty good. I have 7200 in my 2018 3 😂
Water INSIDE the vehicle is definitely not minor
Tony C you are 100% correct with your comment about QC. its a crime to treat customers as fools and hope they don't see these flaws, I was a new vehicle dealer in CA for 30 years and we would never get away with delivering cars with so many flaws
