Coming back to this five years later, I find it funny how: 1) Hardly any games really took any advantage of Nvidia’s PhysX (especially fluid physics). 2) Even in a simulation of milk on a bunny, Dan isn’t safe from spiders.
I have to wonder if at some point all these “incredible realistic graphics” are just becoming diminishing returns. Like when Half Life 2 came out 10 years after Doom, and the change in graphics and physics was absolutely insane. Now here we are almost 20 years after HL2, and do even the most high tech and demanding games feel that much more advanced than it? Sure stuff like Source 2 might be objectively “better”, but it’s nowhere near the huge leaps you’d see in the 90s. All I’m saying is it feels like we’ve hit a point where practicality has overcome stuff looking realistic, and that 1 million polygons doesn’t look much different than 10k polygons.
Physx is used in TONS of games. Still today. From PC, to console, even mobile. A quick search on google I found a list on PC gaming wiki of games that use physx and it has 749 titles in the list. It is the default physics engine in unity, and was for unreal as well until UE 5 when epic replaced it with their own in house physics engine (of course devs can still use physx with UE5 if they want instead). I'm talking about the CPU physx stuff though of course. The GPU accelerated stuff like this did indeed never get used in a meaningful way.
Well hell, look at how much RTX cards are. Their whole selling point thing is "ooh raytracing" and how many games actually take advantage of raytracing? Only a select few.
Suuuuuuuuuure, once everybody submits to the PC master-race, and uber-computers at that. Games like Team Fortress 2 and Battlefield, etc. are fine with people, weapons, and scraps of flaming shrapnel falling towards the ground. I guess the more Arty/Detailed games might do with them (That'd be your "Dear Esters" and your "Witchers").
Artemis Martyn I was thinking more along the lines of Dishonored with dynamic flowing rain in the gutters. The physics engine doesn't necessarily have to be the main focus.
I've dreamed of like bringing it back to the 1700's or like ancient rome or something.... and then realize they would either call me a god, or kill me because im like evil or something.
i remember watching this years back and being like "i gotta check that out" and looking all over the internet for it before eventually giving up and thinking about it ever since and i finally come back to see if i can find it again and there was a link. in the description.
I remember watching this the day before my 17-year-old cat died and I was amazed by it. I loved this video so much. The next day, my cat died and I was feeling down in the dumps. My family wasn't feeling great either so I decided to put this video on the TV. Everybody loved it. They loved the physics and Dan's humor. Thanks, Dan! You made a random person's day better in 2015!
The reason the fluid went weird with 0 cohesion is because it stopped sticking to itself. Water has fairly high cohesion, it kind of combines with surface tension! Science!
if there is no friction you can still touch stuff, gravity does it's job. but if you start moving you will never stop, unless if you can rocket your self in the opposite direction.
+Brian Hanson Your feet would immediately slip off and then you will slide until eternity. Maybe some guys in the future will somehow place your still sliding corpse in a skate park in a museum... I guess that would make much money. xD WTF
The reason you can't touch anything is due to either the strong nuclear force or the Pauli exclusion principle. Neither of those have anything to do with charge.
***** actually its pretty true every atom has an electron cloud that is neg charged so you can not touch any thing even moecules dont exactly touch only the clouds do
Lactose The Intolerant That is mostly true but there is such a thing as fusion :p Also, atoms do not all have the same charge (ions) but I get what you mean :p
Dan. Cohesion isn't stickyness. Adhesion is stickyness. Cohesion is sticking-togetherness. But you're right about viscosity being goopyness, or more specifically resistance-to-flowing-ness.
could I run it on this? 13 TB RAM flux capacitor NASA 1YB optic fibre Internet Death Star reactor core carbonite cooled can run ARMA at 12 frames so should I upgrade?

Yeah its simulated via frame rate so just lock it at 60 or 120 and you're all gucci. Some basic plane game run this way so you can fly a plane at light speed

4:00 yes, i suppose thats true, but to bad it won't stop you from falling to your death. remember, its not the fall that is killing your, or the ground, its the sudden stop at the end!
You can still see there's a clear limitation in water physics to where the particles can still be distinguished and will behave oddly because particles are stacking, but it's still damn impressive. I can't wait to see what they can do when the particles can be rendered efficiently at vastly smaller diameters and larger quantities.
It depends, if you're a drug overlord that they have been looking for for the past 2years than no. If they broke into the wrong house and found an innocent OAP then yes.
Just imagine when your playing a game that uses that tearing feature to create the effect of a bullet going through cloth or someone's clothes or some such
Just coming back to this video after 8 years... 29:20 Those balls flying up in the air is a similar effect the cars in the Carmagedeon mod for GTA IV and V goes through. Makes sense considering both require low/negative friction.
You can never touch anything. It's just a reaction between the atoms and electrons of your finger pushing away from the atoms and electrons in whatever you think youre touching!
Either way life has already turned you into a pathetic little individual whom insults others over the internet. It's very likely you have people giving you shit everyday in the real world, you're too insecure and weak to stop it, so you come on here and try to give it back in anyway you can. =]

@Jvirus2 the things is source 2 actually is a huge leap, just for valve, other studios have just become complacent and aren't willing to innovate
