  • Monemvasia is a spectacular 'Island' town and castle, connected to the Greek mainland by a causeway.
Located in Laconia county, in the Peloponnese, Greece, Monemvasia is about 4 hours drive from Athens, and 1.5 hours from Kalamata.

It is one of the top tourist destinations in the Peloponnese, famed for its rugged beauty, boutique hotels, restaurants and sunsets.
The island is a monosyllabic rock rising about 100m from the sea and connected to the mainland via a roadway across a man made causeway. On the top is a Byzantine Castle, and ruined medieval town, though the site itself once had an Acropolis dating back 2500 years to the Minoan Civilisation.
Subsequently settled by the Spartans in the 7th Century AD, it was then subject to many sieges and changed hands several times between the Byzantines, Venetians, Ottomans and Greeks.
Below the ruined upper town and castle sits the lower town, rebuilt after the Greek revolution of 1821 and catering for tourists. Surrounded by walls, and defensive fortifications Monemvasia offers a unique experience for the visitor, and is highly recommended as a 2 day, 1 night stop during a tour of the Peloponnese in Greece.

Great video as always. We live in Kalamata and have visited Monemvasia but due to cronky knees didn't attempt the upward path, so it was great to virtually follow you up there, see the amazing views and listen to the history of this wonderful place. Thanks and Yiammas!🍺

Thank you so much for commenting. I am glad you found the video enjoyable, it was very windy when I went! I love Kalamata, one of my favourite places in Greece. I am a frequent visitor with the wife. Even thinking of maybe moving there in the future.

@@GreeceExplored It was very windy when we were there too! It was also August so the wind made the heat bearable. We have lived near Kalamata for 12 years and love it. 😊

It is a good town, with a nice vibe and winter life - plus good shops.@@joysherriff8461

Thanks for all the historic facts, we hope to get here one day! Can you believe it's been on my list for 30 years since my very first trip to the Peloponnese! Fingers crossed for this year!

I hope you enjoy. Being honest I found it to be a little underwhelming after all the hype. It is lovely, but very small too. Great place to explore though too, and do go to the top if you have a chance.

@@GreeceExplored Hmm! Thanks for that little extra tip, we will probably go another time as we are going to be there in August this year - hot I know but it's the only time we can go!

What an amazing story behind this little piece of land.
And yet another amazing video of yours, full of accurate & interesting historical events to match the breathtaking views!
A good lavalier mic with wind protection from Amazon would be a great match for that iphone 12, Andrew.
I'll be in Chalandri in the beginning of June. Let me know if I can help with that....

I will have a look at the Mic, thank you, and glad you enjoyed the video. I would happily meet, but am going to the UK at the end of May for a couple of months, see family, avoid the heat etc. I will be doing some vids from there before I return to Greece after the summer.... mad I know... I hope you will keep watching, and I will be back doing more videos in Greece!

I think it was continuously inhabited and many homes were still inhabited before the tourism-era restorations. Not as in good of a shape as they are now, but I'm pretty sure many homes in the old town were still intact and inhabited. I'm pretty sure but not 100%.

I am sure there were some residents too, though it was basically rebuilt for the tourists, there is nothing negative about that, great that areas of Greece can benefit so much from the visitors!

I always worry a bit, but it was cold up there when I filmed, the summer may be a different matter
