Hi Everyone! I filmed this repair a couple weeks ago, incase your wondering why the shelves are back behind me! I get asked about the Stihl MS170 chain tensioner all the time - so here is a little video about it! I hope you enjoy! Please Subscribe, it really helps me out!
I just ordered this upgrade kit for my MS170. Thanks for this detailed installation video. I love my MS170 for working around the yard. I also find all your videos to be very helpful. Watching from Novea scotia. Thanks again!
Did that to my MS170 about a year after I got it...best mod in my opinion. Odd they don't list that as an option in the parts list for that saw but do for the MS250 that comes with it out of the box. lol. Cheers from NB
A very clear demo of this upgrade. Showing how each piece of the new tensioner fits with the others and how the completed assembly sits when it’s properly pushed home in the saw was particularly useful. That tensioner with its two exquisite little helical gears is a work of art, it has to be said. Then again, your videos are too.
Too bad all the chain saws you work on were that easy to fix. Love Scotts UA-cam channel too. The greasy shop rag name always makes me laugh when I see it!😄👍
That's for showing us that upgrade. You have convinced me my next saw will be a Stihl . Looking at a 600 level. If you have time what options are available and what size bar I am thinking about 28-32 inch range . I know everyone will put their two cents in but I hope I can hear from Erica
Thanks for sharing all the information in a way that is easy to understand and educate us. Look forward to seeing the carb stands in use on your channel in future videos and seeing if you prefer one over the other - colour, adjustability, size of the support pins, etc.
I love my 170's but i would like to have a "yellow" chain instead of the "green" homeowner chain. Great job, this has inspired me to convert my 170's to side tensioning.
It‘s been my experience with Stihl dealers that they are very apprehensive selling yellow chain for anything under a 70cc saw. Kickback is a much greater risk on smaller saws.
Agree with your comments about Greasy Shop Rag. Your channel is great too! Nice that you guys recommend and follow each other's content. Subscribed to both of you, now totally covered for all Husky and Stihl saw assistance plus others. Thanks a lot.
Hi Erica, thanks for the video. Timing couldn’t have been better as I’m just about to do the side tensioner mod to my MS180. Btw I think the technical term for the ‘thrust pad’ can be changed to ‘dangle berry’ 😂
Good video! You make the hair on the back of my neck bristle up whenever you run that chain backwards w/ your bare hand, rag or not…a slip off going forwards is fine, back will give you sutures! No need to do that.
Well now this is an interesting video and a much better Way too tighten your chain. I did not know that some Stihl chainsaws tightened from the end. I just thought that all Stihl chainsaws had the side chain tightener.
I heard there was a guy on youtube who opened his fan mail boxes with a chainsaw. Would you suggest a sharp or dull chain for that purpose? Also, which model saw would be best suited for that task?
I just serviced my chainsaws and i was thinking if Erica can do it.? Why not me.? Besides Ontario is 1100 miles away. Do you pick up and delivery ????????
Easy to install and cheap. No body knows why it didnt came so from factory? Why didnt you greased the screws, i would do it? But thanks for the quick Video.

I also found a new channel for more saw content ty very much.
Both you guys are really great, Master class of Stihl and Master class of Husqvarna.
😊.
You had me as soon as you said the word “upgrade”! Who doesn’t want to upgrade their equipment?
Proper repair. I have four of these. Two with 12 bars and two with 16 bars. Well done.
I ran a new 12 inch chain today through maple and felled hickory.
Those side mount chain saw tension devices are The Best way to tighten the chain saw chain
Thanks! Coffee time.

Thx for the video. I have a MS170. Just ordered the side tensioner. Looks dirt simple!
Top, vielen Dank für das zeigen 👍🏻
Good to see the 036 moving up in the queue
I just got a kit and changed over my MS180 as well, also added a spike kit too👍

I’m definitely going to do that upgrade to my 170 soon! 👍
Nice work .

Greasy rag is a great guy and I love his content!

I'm here!! Sorry was too bussy for photo session. I'll do it as soon as I catch some free time.
Thanks for being here!
@@marriedwithsmallengines Any time!!
A nice easy repair for a change!
Need to do that to my 170
A basket case yes but a bucket case is a new one lol.
I am subscribed to greasy shop rag. Great.....
Well now this is an interesting video and a much better Way too tighten your chain. I did not know that some Stihl chainsaws tightened from the end. I just thought that all Stihl chainsaws had the side chain tightener.
👍👍👍
The first thing I did to my 170 is change the tensioner to the side and added a metal dog.
Great content interesting upgrade,I may have to try it.cheers
Maybe that tab on the tensioner is like a compressive bearing sleeve this tab compresses to give the correct hold down torque?
Keep the bucket!
I heard there was a guy on youtube who opened his fan mail boxes with a chainsaw. Would you suggest a sharp or dull chain for that purpose? Also, which model saw would be best suited for that task?
A Stihl GTA26 would likely work well.
HI Erica.
What engines do you run in the racing 🏁 tractor 🚜. Thanks for another great video.
Maybe you can set up a Fan mail video and they will support you!
I am waiting to see the 170 that hit something should be interesting
The original cover that came with the saw, does it have the adjusting hole already or do you need to change or drill a new whole to side adjuster?
Do ms170 s come without a chain catcher? Thats why it has that empty hole below the tensioner or maybe it was made of plastic and broke off?
The chain catcher on a Ms170 is plastic and is built into the clutch cover
@@marriedwithsmallenginesThat makes sense now. I didnt think about the cover. Thank you and love your videos.
Hi Erica 👋
Hi! :)
What engine are those guys running ? Thank you Bruce.
I just serviced my chainsaws and i was thinking if Erica can do it.? Why not me.? Besides Ontario is 1100 miles away. Do you pick up and delivery ????????
Will that side tensioner work on a 024 with a one nut chain cover ?
Did you do the 262 ?
I wonder if there is side tensioner conversion kit for my 024?
Maybe that sharp piece is left over when they break long printed strips of those things apart as they come off the line
Easy to install and cheap. No body knows why it didnt came so from factory? Why didnt you greased the screws, i would do it?
But thanks for the quick Video.
Know of any Stihl articles decals? Obsolete except for NOS.
It's funny that you can tear the saw down with just T27, flat head screwdriver, 13 and 19mm socket....
Ford should learn from Stihl...
HAHAHA
Cheers!!
My chainsaw caught fire? What's the cause?
I changed 4 MS170's to side chain adjust and don't think the front adjuster is safe. Too easy to make contact with the chain.
As a Stihl dealer, you have a source for your parts. Where does the homeowner buy genuine Stihl parts.
You can get parts from any Stihl dealer
That front tensioner system just feels way to awkward and unnatural to me!
Every saw, no matter the manufacturer, came with front tensioner years ago. Yes, could be a PITA.
