Will the kit fit other Stihl saws with front access screws?

    • @TheKrayusKorianis

This upgrade is only for Stihl homeowner saws. MS170-251. I'd have put felling spikes on the 170 in the video. I've done both the tensioner and spikes on my 170.
These upgrade parts are 1123 parts, which are the 210-251 saws. The tensioner, spikes, oil pump, clutch drums are interchangeable on the 1130 (170 & 180) saws.

Dony- Just ordered this for two of my MS170 saws (one found in a field & I fixed up) because of you. Highly recommend THE STIHL OEM UPGRADE (currently $20 in the USA over on the Stihl Amazon). I owe you one, Dony. Those front adjusters drive me crazy.

Thank you so much! I just converted my 180 today and it only took about 30 minutes taking my time. The old toolless adjuster didn't hold tension and was frustrating to use--I'm glad it's gone. The entire upgrade was about $25.

I like my MS170, they come with no gasket between the muffler and cylinder. My saw was getting nasty in that area. I ordered one meant for an MS250, much better now.

I have meant to do this upgrade for some time and while visiting my mom I saw your video and used the part number you gave us and ordered the kit. It’ll be so much easier tightening the chain now. I’ll have to look at the video you have for that hidden grease spot on the clutch so I can grease it before any damage occurs. Enjoy your videos from SS Marie, Ontario

I have recently done this to my little 170. A handy modification but not crucial, just easier to adjust the chain.
Also I’ve added metal dog spikes which are a lot better than the standard plastic fantastics.
With a decent chain I can use the little stihl all day on smaller wood, nice and light.
Otherwise I use one of my bigger chainsaws on the big limbs/trees.
    Like your videos. Cheers

Great video Don, thanks so much. Utterly brilliant no-brainer upgrade - any chain adjustments using the old position are a right pain, you can never quickly find the adjuster when it's covered with sawdust and it's easier to cut your hand on the chain.
Having the side adjuster makes it SO much easier and far more likely that I'll keep the chain adjusted just right, it's so quick and hassle free. Super video, nice and concise and really well shot 👍👌👏.

Inspired, I bought the Stihl OEM part and installed in my 021 purchased in mid 90's. Had replaced sprocket cover years ago - that part had hole in it for side adjuster. Bottom line: works, but not nearly as smooth as Dony's. My metal kit parts fit very tightly in plastic part, not as nice as in video. Hopefully over time it will loosen up? Regardless, a great improvement and THANKS for another great video.

  • @888HUSKERS
    @888HUSKERS 3 роки тому

I would highly recommend as another MS170 MS180 upgrade doing a conversion to 1/4” Picco chain, bar, and sprocket. The narrow kerf and usually shorter chain like a 12” bar similar to those on Stihl pole saws or battery powered saws means less resistance because of a narrow kerf and less teeth to have to drive in the cut. This was a HUGE upgrade for me and I found the MS170 with the side adjuster and narrow kerf chain transforms this saw from feeling underpowered too a limbing/firewood hungry little monster. I also took it up another notch and added an adjustable carburetor but honestly it does fine even with the stock carb. This is my go to saw when I put on waders and have to clear downed branches in the creek/canal that people kayak ever Sprig and Summer and usually Fall/Winter brings a lot of downed branches. I find this saw much more nimble, fast cutting, and less tiring to lug around in the water or up embankments. Stihl is selling similar power to weight ratio saws with similar bar setups which are basically top handle saws converted to be rear handle saws for $200 to $300 more than the cost of this saw. If you own and operate a STIHL pole saw this a very logical upgrade/mod because you’ll already have this bar and chain in use and it always helps running similar chains and bar sizes that are interchangeable for simplicity sake when in the field.

@@j.chrisbeck7492 I agree and it is a nice saw, especially compared to competition.

So, after watching this video and loved what I saw I called my local dealer and told me he couldn’t find the part on the Stihl web site he had(?)!
I then asked for the company phone number and he wouldn’t give me that either! 🤨
So, I called another shop and got it ordered right away! 😃
    Go figure!!!!

I bought my 290 over 12 years ago and it has the side adjuster. The problem I have is keeping the blade tight. And yes, I lift the bar before tightening. No the chain is not stretching, it just cannot maintain the tension for more than about 30 mins. Any ideas?
