I thought allowing my hair to go natural would make it more low maintenance but boy was I wrong! I have no regrets but it's definitely not what I expected. Especially the texture change. That is the most challenging for me.

    I’m 70 next year and have definitely noticed changes in my skin and hair in the last five years. I have natural blonde hair, but as it’s darkened overtime, I added some highlights. I’ve done this myself for nearly 28 years. My hair is down to my hips and wavy. A couple of years ago I added a couple layers myself… I’ve cut my own hair nearly all my life. I finally got sick of scraggly ends and funky color and went to a stylist in April. She added a few low lights and cut about a foot of length off and cut two long layers. My hair went completely curly! She said I had a ton of hair! I do like the look of the shorter length (my bestie said I look like a model ha ha) but it is more challenging to put up. The shortest layer falls just below my shoulders, mid layer, just below the collarbone and the longest layer just above the bra strap. I wear my hair up 90% of the time because I work from home. I use low suds shampoo and only wash two days a week. I have never used conditioner on my scalp. Even with hip length hair, I have never had tangles. Most of my life I had very oily hair and skin… No more. I use argon oil on the very ends after I wash. When my hair is dry, I use about a dime size of squalene oil and very lightly run it through the mid and ends of my hair. I now use a diffuser for my curls. I put my hair up in a silk scrunchie at night. The day after I wash my hair it goes from bouncy curls to soft curls which I love. I think it takes some trial and error to figure out what works. I learned that a good stylist can bring out the best in your hair. Finding the right stylist is key. It’s expensive so not everyone can afford to go regularly. Finding a stylist who will work with you and give you tips for the interim is helpful. Watching videos with people you trust and respect like the both of you is also very helpful. I appreciate the conversations and the professional information you give us Justin❤❤

    Thank you for addressing aging hair! You are so articulate in your explanation. I love watching both of you converse. There are a lot of channels with young people, which we all were at one time😃, one person in particular that doesn’t have any hair that’s telling you what you should do for your hair, but it’s geared towards young people. I love that you address all ages but that you’re going to mid age and older because that’s a huge problem. I am on a routine and trimmed off a few inches and don’t wash it every other day but every three days it’s starting to look better. I use Color fanatic leave in conditioner and Redken acidic bonding concentrate is a game changer for me. My hair is definitely looking better and I’m taking spironolactone and minoxidil orally and I see a lot of hair growing in it consistently just like when you work out it takes time.

    A Teacher, his Teacher Assistant and the many students listening intently. I loved this conversational format 👍🏻 I can't stand to go more than 2 days without shampooing even using dry/texturizing shampoo. I have used a silk pillowcase for years. You know what I hate about it ?? Seeing spots on it in the morning from my skincare since I'm a side sleeper. With 90% of what you listed as a cause of texture change, I nodded my head, that's my problem! I believe my 2 biggest problems are age (74) and color treating every 12 weeks. It used to be every 6 but since my grey is now blending in more with the blonde, I am able to extend the time between those appts.

    Hi Justin and Deanna. Greetings from the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand. I am coming up 72 with greying blond hair. I have fine curly hair but I have lot of it. I started to shed a lot of hair about 6 months ago and was quite concerned as I don’t colour my hair, use blow dryers and only wash my hair twice a week and it’s always air dried. I watched your video a couple ago and was interested in your comments about leave in conditioner. Wow what a game changer! I wash my hair, lightly condition and then apply the leave in conditioner, a very small bit of curl cream and then let it air dry. The leave in conditioner keeps the curl in until the next wash, my hair doesn’t feel dry and doesn’t go into the frizz for the next couple of days. Just within a very short period of time my hair shedding has dropped considerably and stays curly and soft until the next wash. Thanks so much! Love your hiking videos but think about coming down to NZ, views that don’t suck are around every corner. Best wishes. Diane.

    Hi Justin! I'm a dark natural blonde who quit lightening her hair during the pandemic. Blonde hair is SO DELICATE and I now baby my hair. It's thinner in diameter and I have lost some through menopause and started Minoxidil about 6 months ago. I also use New Wash and combine that with a purple shampoo to get the oil out for about half my shampoos. Dr Mary Claire put in words everything I've been going through in my 40's and early 50's. I'll be 55 in about 2 weeks and I'm starting to feel great again. Also, your addressing the topic of the menopausal woman and how this affects everything about her hair, and consequently, her entire outlook is SO APPRECIATED. Product lines like Boom Beauty and Jones Road are finally focusing on the older woman. We are NOT aging like our mothers, thank goodness. 60 is the new 40, or something like that!

    I have always enjoyed your videos! Your wife is beautiful. As I hit 40, I gradually noticed a lot these types of changes you mentioned. I have a new probelm now though because 6 months ago, I was diagnosed with breast cancer (Im 48). I went through 4 months of chemo, and finished 3 months ago. I have been growing from a bald head, ugh!..and I thought I had problems before. Lol..I always had long straight blond hair and now it is growing back thick/coarse, curly, and white/gray. I rub rosemary, cocnut oil, and castor oils on my head, take biotin, and eat healthy which seems to be working. The sleep you mentioned, not so much! The castor oil really helped my eyelashes and eyebrows grow, btw which I learned from others who went through chemo regrowth. I am still watching your videos and taking any advice I can use to help my current hair situation. I have never had a picie cut or very short hair, I am trying to figure out these styles. Hi there, I love this video, but I still need advice pls. My hair is thick and curly. I always air dry - it takes about 3 hours and I do not touch it, i add a curly styling cream and an oil on the scalp. I wash it just over a week as it's very dry. My scalp is dry. I can use moracin oil straight on the scalp to massage. I can oil ends and mids later on when dry. I use mouse the day after to help eliminate frizz which it does very well and I can either continue to mouse or use moracan oil the following days after which my hair feels nice and soft and shiney and combs easily through which a wide tomb come. my hair can feel like a haystack without anything! 8 years ago I had 15 sessions of radiotherapy which made my hair and skin oily - that was hard to work out. Now my hair is still but length but is turning whiter, dryer and the fringe area is breaker off - i have a mallen streak here where the most breakage is and don't know what to do for the best. I sleep in a bonnet! please help, I'm sure I am not the only one! :) thanking you in advance.

Also, when you mention how important it is to moisturize your hair is it better to use a hair mask or regular conditioner?

    You mention to eat healthier, but you don’t specify what that means. Hair is made from protein, so you need high quality protein in the diet, which means animal protein. Plant proteins are by and large incomplete and not very bio available. When I increased my protein intake it made a huge difference in the thickness of my hair.

    I’ve heard of people using conditioner first and then shampoo. I can see how that conditioner already on the hair might protect the hair length from the shampoo.
    Since I started using more product I’m suddenly having buildup on my scalp. Any hints onhow do I prevent that?

    • @justinhickox
      @justinhickox  3 дні тому

      Interesting, I’ve actually not heard of people doing that before. My initial thought is that depending on the shampoo they’re using, they may end up stripping the nutrients from the conditioner out of their hair immediately. Probably not the direction I would head. If you’re finding buildup from using product, using a stronger shampoo once every few times you shampoo or once a week, if you shampoo more often will help.

      It depends on how much you’re using, and how often your shampooing. But the thought is that shampooing even the roots, you’re going to end up getting shampoo through the mid shaft and ends enough to remove that product. If you find that you’re not removing enough, once a week, you can shampoo your whole head mid shaft and ends as well.

Like I said, I have really fine hair so I will go maybe every other day at most. I need a Basics for Dummies video about not washing. How do you style it? Do you wet it in the shower and just not wash? Why go to a fourth day without shampooing if it looks and feels gross - is it really worth hating your hair 25% of the time (based on Dionna's schedule she mentions)? Don't you need to wash the product out of the mid lengths? I truly don't understand this basic concept. Thanks for the education. I'm learning a lot from you.

    *Love this casual "chat" format* . I wish I had been better armed with knowledge like this prior to entering menopause at 50. My hair changes were a major self-esteem punch. It took me about two years to get things right. I had the hormonal issues causing thinning, I had years of hard water causing dullness, over washing causing dryness, and coloring/heat styling damage. I stopped coloring, worked my way into 2 washes/week, got a shower filter, used hard water clarifying s/c combos at least once a month, tried minoxidil but didn't like it and went with rosemary/peppermint/green tea tonic. My hair improved and also became wavy, so I embraced it. Healthy salt and pepper hair is just fine with me. I do use bond builders and a protein treatment about every six weeks at this point. I always had fine strands, but they are baby fine these days.

    I have one major question about dry shampoo that I'm hoping you can answer - Why is it better to apply all of those chemicals found in dry shampoo to hair and scalp than it is to simply rinse with water and/or shampoo as normal? Do we really know how the chemicals in dry shampoos impact our bodies?

    • @raraavis7782
      @raraavis7782 3 дні тому +1

      Basic dry shampoo actually has a pretty simple formulation.
      Something like this (this is the one I use): BUTANE, PROPANE, ALCOHOL DENAT, ORYZA SATIVA STARCH, CETRIMONIUM CHLORIDE, PANTHENOL.
      Nothing offensive in there. Of course, others may have added fragrance and other stuff. But if you're worried about irritation, just check and compare the labels and choose accordingly.
      You could even try using just the starch. Although applying it without the convenience of a pressurized bottle is somewhat cumbersome.

    • @user-lf5oz9ki8z

      Oh, I don't know...dihydrogen monoxide is pretty scary stuff, if you ask me. You can drown in it and everything.
      (that's sarcasm, in case it wasn't obvious).
      Why would you assume, that butane and propane are harmful to you? I mean, if 'used as intended', obviously.
      They're just gasses, just like oxygen and carbon dioxide, which you breathe in and make in your own body, respectively. You even produce your very own methane in your large intestine.
      Butane and propane have been safely used in spray bottles and other applications for 50+ years.
      You're statistically far more likely to have a bad reaction to 'all natural' essential oils used for fragrance or alcohol used as a conservative, to avoid 'chemical' ones (as if alcohol isn't a chemical).
      I mean, be extra careful and all that, by all means. I'm not saying, we should just blindly use everything, that's put in front of us, when it comes to cosmetics or food. But at least do a basic google search or something, before you condemn some ingredient. Or listen to people with medical degrees or PhD's, who have made it their mission to teach the public about what's worth worrying about and what isn't. They're not hard to find on UA-cam.

    Even though I am 67 I have to wash my hair every other day. To be honest I could wash it every day. Once I went to my dermatologist and she saw suberic dermatitis spots on my scalp. She asked how often I wash my hair. As someone who washed my hair every day, I started trying to cut back to every 3 days. She emphatically expressed to me that if you have an oily scalp you have to wash your hair every day. The dermatitis build up can cause follicles to die. I concentrate on my scalp when I shampoo. I use minoxidil the night before in the temple area. It really has helped. I am convinced that HRT has kept hair on my head!😁

There are blue/purple shampoos, blue/purple conditioners and some blue/purple “shampoos” that aren’t meant to clean hair at all (simply used to help tone the color). Most of them, I recommend only using once a week or every few times you shampoo, in which case you shouldn’t have an issue using them through the ends.

      This is my issue,too unfortunately I won't be washing my hair any less, it gets done most days as I'm at the gym rolling about on a mat so it's partially a hygeine issue, and also as I'm a sweaty, smelly mess with hot flushes... I know they say you have to choose between face and body when you age, but apparently it's hair and body too! It goes unwashed on my rest days but that's as much as it gets.

      I think the issue isn't so much the washing as the styling, anyways.
      Or at least that's how I've always understood him in other videos. You're supposed to only wash twice a week (ideally), to avoid heat styling your hair more often than that. So if you have a haircut/length that's 'easy maintenance', it's less of an issue. It's just when you use a straightener or curling iron after every wash, where things get really dicey.
      Plus, his target audience probably also often has color treated hair on top of that. I've always mostly been a 'wash and air dry' girl and even with bra strap length hair, I never had an issue with washing it every other day.
