UNICAT Expedition Vehicle: Off-road capability

  • How much off-road capability is necessary for a expedition vehicle ?
    For us at UNICAT , a expedition vehicle is more a tool than a toy and it´s purpose is to bring the owners to the nicest and most remote places on our planet and to provide shelter, comfort and safety while driving or while standing somewhere.
    Of course, without a certain offroad capability, it would not be a expedition vehicle but how extreme do you want to go and what do you have to give up for that.
    Many people think that if they choose a chassis that is well known for it´s off-road capability, ( like the Unimog or other mainly military vehicles ), they believe that with that decision, the chapter offroad capability is covered and can be closed.
    But then, as comfort and range is also important, they want to put a too long, too high and to heavy body on that chassis.
    But if you do that, you loose a lot or all of the offroad capabilities that chassis has promised.
    Therefore, it is important to have a clear view what level of comfort you want, how much water and fuel you want to carry, what areas you want to travel ( if not all ) and if you have personal limits of how long, wide etc. the vehicle shall be.
    Once you know what you want beside off-road capability and driving comfort, you can choose the appropriate chassis.
    Depending on body Length and weight you can decide for a 4x4, 6x6 or 8x8, the size of the drivers cab and the drive train.
    When we made the video about the technical details and the interior of the MD77, we also took some shots about driving this vehicle.
    We want to show you this video which takes about 13 minutes as a example how easy handling, comfort and offroad capability can be combined.
    The chassis is MAN TGS 6x6 with 4,5 + 1,4 m wheelbase, 16.00 R 20 tires and 540 hp engine.

    This Expedition Vehicle is amazing. In the USA, there are many BLM and National Forest trails/roads that are tight, steep, curvy, and lined with trees. Jeep Rubicon Wranglers and Toyota 4Runners dominate the off-road driving. It looks like your Expedition Vehicle has the same elaborate suspension as the Jeep Rubicon and more than enough ground clearance to tackle these USA trails. If your Expedition Vehicles can traverse these USA trails (such as Imogene Pass in Colorado), it would be a stunning achievement by your design team. Any videos of this kind? Safe Travels!

    Awesome vehicle. That last turn that he did, I thought it might tip over, but sure enough, it stayed true. I wonder what the safety and rollover stats are on this vehicle. Not that I plan to do any Tokyo drift with it, Although...

    Seriously, Unicat is actually what I would be looking for as a live-in off-the-grid. The power and ruggedness. I especially liked the one with a garage that could fit two e-bikes and a Polaris side-by-side.

    12:02 - Skilled drivers tend to prefer handbrake control over Hillholder Button or rear differential slipbrake.. or whats the idea here on Man truck?

    • @UNICATexpeditionvehicles
      @UNICATexpeditionvehicles  3 роки тому +1

      MAN has a button to hold the truck braked, depending on who is using it and the conditions.
      On a slight climb or descent the button is handy, but if you are in extreme conditions, the handbrake is more reliable.

      the electronics on board do not affect the operation of the vehicle. In any case, each vehicle is built on specific customer requests, so if you don't want them in yours, we don't put them in.

    • @UNICATexpeditionvehicles
      @UNICATexpeditionvehicles  4 роки тому +2

      Hello Baron von Teuchter, on the TGS, you have the choice of manual transmission or automatic shifting, which still is a normal transmission with a clutch, but operated by a computer. The automatic operated transmission is appr. 2.000 more than the manual transmission.
      A full automatic transmission would need to be retrofitted, depending on hp and weight, the cost will be in a range of 50-60.000 Euro

      What you do is wait for vehicle big enough to tow you out. In developing countries, that could be a looong wait. I read about someone in a Unimog expedition vehicle in Africa who had to wait three days (!) for a suitable tow vehicle to arrive.

    • @UNICATexpeditionvehicles
      @UNICATexpeditionvehicles  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Graeme,
      the simple answer is - it depends on the specific circumstances. It can be rearly hard and take days to get out, so the best is not to get in, or at least not to get in too deep.
      Stopping and thinking what will be the next step is the best advice I can give, instead of turning the wheels and getting deeper and deeper ….

      @@UNICATexpeditionvehicles I guess you could think of it this way: I'm not strong enough to lift a Suzuki Jimney out of a hole if it gets stuck, so the difference between 1.5 tons of stuck vehicle and 25 tons of stuck vehicle is largely technical.

    Does this vehicle have J-breaks, or is there some other solution?

    • @UNICATexpeditionvehicles
      @UNICATexpeditionvehicles  4 роки тому +4

      Hi Ron, On a long decent, you need to go down in a low gear so that the engine brake - and if you have - the retarder can maintain the speed you want to go down. The service brake should only be used occasionallly for adjustments of speed, otherwise, it will overheat and fail quickly.
      That´s something you learn when you make a commercial truck drivers licence.
      I think it´s great that in the U.S., you can drive a heavy truck with a B licence if it´s a RV, but in your own interest, I recommend to learn how to drive and operate a commercial truck.

    What is that bulky 1990s television thing doing in the middle of the dashboard?
    Why not replace it with a nice flatscreen?
    And why are there 200 buttons in the console?

    So, you show the vehicle going through a swamp, and I click on it, and all you do is go once around the parking lot. It's not a SHERP, and it's not much of a RV for luxury...more utilitarian look, for hydro workers. For serious expedition, I rather take a SHERP anyday (carries 8 people)....crosses lakes, goes where your vehicle couldn't dream of. It looks like your trying to offroad with a RV with a converted motorhome. If you want to get there, fly in, or SHERP there. The Unicat will not handle sloped shorelines along rivers without rolling over (high cener of gravity). It won't do the Rubicon trail. It's designed for the right terrain, not any terrain, which an expedition vehilce might be faced with...A SHERP CAN go over anything, land or water. At $115k, far cheaper. First rule, never go alone....so 2 SHERPS is cheaper then 1 Unicat, and you will get stuck with the Unicat, and CAA will not be able to help you.
